    • I think there was a reseller on here a couple of years ago that had non-standard variants at a discount, or maybe that was a fever dream.

Prime day will be only 10% off Apple as per google search as part of early prime day deals:(

Ok, let me answer some question.

Q1: M1, M1 pro M1 max M1 Ultra or the new M2… easy, M1 pro is the best bang for buck powerfull chip. The M2 is a M1 warm-over of the M1+A16 cores+media-codecs, you a better chip with the M1 Pro and all are ARMv8 instruction set. The next real Mx is going to be when apple ditch V8 for the new V9 instruction set! ARM are already doing second generation V9 chips that will be in everything in 2023!

Q2: 8gb, 16gb or 32/even 64gb…. Answer is 16gb for 99.99% is yes, 8 needs too many swaps and that wares out nVme storage faster (say 5 years instead of 10)

Q3: Is 500gb storage enough…. Answer is 16gb for 99.99% is yes. Fast thunderbolt4/USB-C on the MBP M1 Pro makes external fast storage easier and cheaper than apple tax options for almost everyone. 256gb isnt enough unless it for web surfing and travel laptop

IS THIS A GOOD BUY IN THE MBP APPLE PRODUCT CYCLE ~ YES… I dont think we will see the next apple V9 chip upgrade this year alas as the V8 with extentions is still faster than the 2nd generation V9 but despite that it is coming. But by then you will see an OZB add for it at $2500 JUMP ON IT TOO and sell the old MBP ~ it is the OZB WAY

  • That Apple tax. You wouldn't pay half that for PC specs even at Dell.

Please link a comparable Dell system.

Anyone know if Apple is able to price match online?

    • +3

I dont know but they were happy to give 10% in store for me today. I was going to buy the macbook air M2 but the price was much the same as this macbook pro 14 so bought that instead. With inflation up and AU heading down I fear the next hefty price increase on the next pro upgrade.

  • Someone who never used a mac before for day-to-day work? Just wondering if 16GB of memory is enough. It'll be used primarily for Teams call, VScode, git and docker. MS Visio. I currently have a laptop with 16GB of memory. Sometimes I feel it needs more memory as I've opened a lot of tabs.
Not sure how Mac handles that or if customises go for 32GB.
I like the Mac air M2, but I'm worried it might throttle.

There is no Visio for Mac. MS Teams is currently still intel version (so you run it through Rosetta). Git is fine. Docker, do the images you need have arm based version? Some utilities in the docker package are not arm64 ready (so still need to run through Rosetta).

If you feel that you currently need more memory on your current laptop, then you should look at getting more RAM for your new laptop. Opening a lot of tabs (in browser) generally isn't an issue on 16GB machines I thought (even for PC laptops).

Don't get too influenced by youTubers. Most of them have M1 Pro/Max/Ultra. For M2, they do steer you towards MBA. However, be cynical about it, because their reviews of MBA M2 are coming up next, and they want you to view them when they arrive. Is the M2 throttle situation applicable to you? Do you plan to hammer the M2 with 8K video work? If you have that kind of need, surely you have more powerful gears at the moment. The 256GB vs 512GB SSD is probably a more interesting issue for M2.

      • The battery life and the performance is appealing to me. However, weight is going to be a factor.

  • Looking at the specs, I'm tempted to buy the 14-inch instead of the Macbook air M2. I am just wondering, those who own this device? What's your experience?

Im in the same boat, looks like at minimum should get 16gb ram (+$300) and 512 ssd (+$300) due to the single slower ssd on the 256gb model.

Throw in mini led and better m1p, seems like the clear choice is pay 200 more for this.

Got one after having the original M1 Macbook Pro and wanting easy access to a HDMI port without having to carry dongles around. Can't fault it, I mainly use it for my daily work laptop, very occasional gaming (WoW). It's capable in every way.

I have got the 1TB version with higher GPU count though. It just works, battery life is incredible. Most windows laptops I use, if I close the lid and it goes into sleep it either ends up flat or close to within a few days. This macbook can get through a whole day, teams video calls and normal app work without breaking a sweat and needing a charge. Close the lid on it, I open up a few days later and battery % has hardly moved.

      • I ended up buying this model from jb. So far I like it. But what bothers me the Webcam notch. Can't get over it. How useless is that. Some native apple apps can handle that well as it won't crop but any other apps. Just getting on my nerves. I hope I can bypass that.

The battery life is good. Speaker sounds really nice. Good screen. Don't like the keyboard. I'm using my custom build Q1 mechanical keyboard.

So far. I like it. I've start learning the shortcuts.
Missing the amazing windows split screen. Ractangle app is helping abit.
I feel like it's gojng okay so far.

        • Yeah, MacOS has taken me a bit to get used to, lots of googling shortcuts.

For the notch, there is an option in properties for apps to make it compatible with the notch. For any apps that don't use that space it's generally fine. Otherwise, the option pushes the app down and leaves a bit of a black space along the top border so the title bar isn't obstructed.
