  • How do you claim warranty with OnePlus in Australia?

    • -3

You don’t, you have maybe 30 days return with Amazon?

      • +5

        I mean, it's literally the second Q&A.
And if that is managed within the amazon environment, I'd feel pretty comfortable about it.

        Question:What local Australian warranty covers?

Answer:The Australian warranty includes a limited warranty of 1 year starting from the date of delivery. This warranty covers the hardware components of the Product as originally supplied. The limited warranty only covers product defects caused by workmanship or build materials. The limited warranty does not cover defects or damage resulting from accidents, neglect, misuse or abnormal use; abnormal conditions or improper storage; exposure to liquid, moisture, dampness, sand or dirt; unusual physical, electrical or electromechanical stress

      • What’s with the neg? I’m telling you, when you buy from Amazon, the 30 days will make or break, after that, good luck because the description means nothing since you dealing with Amazon. But then again, I heard stories people can get refund if it gets defected after 30 days, but YMMV!

    • +19

From what I've experienced, support at least in Australia is non-existent.

My OnePlus 8 Pro doesn't have 5g enabled and each update I need to modify a heap of settings on PC to get it to work.

Linus Tech tips also recently did a video saying how he no longer recommends OnePlus: https://youtu.be/3GNoelvk6S4

      • +11

        yep - this.

I had OP8 Pro too.. had fun enabling 5G and VoLTE/VoWi-Fi and working that stuff out but with each update, OnePlus made it harder and harder and tbh just wasn't worth the effort/time .

Also, OnePlus seem to have lost 'flagship killer' features and price bracket that made them attractive in their early days.

        • +5

They stopped advertising themselves after flagship killers many many phones ago. Unfortunately people still keep saying they are.

        • +1

:'( this makes me so sad
I think they unquestionably still have flagship killer features (edit reading Clear's comment, agree not killer haha but flagship parity?), but they haven't been 'mid range' based on price for years
As OnePlus 3t, 6, then 8 Pro user, who has just moved to a Pixel 6 Pro, I have regrets. I'd swap my Pixel 6 Pro for this in a heartbeat.
I see zero need for 5g (but that's probably a different conversation)

          • @nzcoops: I'm looking for a new Android phone to replace my aging OnePlus 5, interested to hear why the Pixel 6 Pro is not as attractive as this?
I mean, the Pixel is the flagship from Google itself, and at $1,000+ for an Android, I expect all phones are pretty good?
I know I need to do a bit research now when I want to get a new phone, but a reason that I have been using Android since smartphone era is the value for money over iPhone. Thanks in advance mate.

        • Their price is no longer flagship killer. Their oxygen os was one of the best on the market. They changed their strategy aimed at upper market and failed miserably

OnePlus was about community and users feedback created a phone with good value

          Now its nothing but sorrow

      • Strange how my op8 pro just started enabling 5g without the need for mods. I was under the impression the bands weren't supported in my model bought from asia.

      • +1

I had the same issues but the latest updates make OnePlus just work out of the box here in Australia. VoLTE/Wifi and 5G just work now, no messing around and having to reapply when an update comes out. That is why I am having a run with the OnePlus 10 Pro myself and will use it alongside my Pixel 6 Pro.

      • Absolutely. I still got my OnePlus, and everyone tells me to switch out over to Samsung. I love the OnePlus, but there's absolutely no support. I have to do the same computer thing to enable wifi calling and volte. It works, but it's a hassle to do the workaround

        • -1

No don't switch to Samsung, switch to pixel you are done. I switched to pixel 5 living in the dream

    • +1

      Another anecdote, - you don't.
Had a software update brick my front facing camera on my OnePlus 7 Pro. Is a known issue. Support told me I can pay for it to be sent to Hong Kong and replaced there, might take a few months. They didn't respond after being prompted for any contact info, lol.
Will never buy a OnePlus phone again.

    • +1

Would also like to say I've dealt with Amazon several times for items outside of their 30-day return period, that comes with an AUSTRALIAN warranty and they have told me so many times to contact the manufacturer, as it's not their responsibility. Have no idea where they got that from. Have filed a complaint to ACCC…

tldr: Amazon doesn't provide any support after 30 days unless you threaten ACCC. Never used to have this problem before…

      • I had an expensive ASUS router die at 11 months old, Amazon sent me a return label and a full refund, so YMMV.

    • You don't, you claim it with Amazon, the retailer.

Going to the manufacturer is an American thing we dont need to do thanks to ACL's (assuming it was bought from an Australian business, of course).

      • But Amazon AU is not the seller. It's some third party seller grey import.

  • +5

Be mindful when buying one as it is only a matter of time before it snaps due to a weaker gap between battery slot and camera as per this video

  • +1

How is "being better than Apple" some sort of differentiator? Not exactly an orphan

      • +22

I've never owned an Apple phone in my life but you cant seriously say a phone with no warranty or local support is better than an iphone.

        • -1

Thats how bad apple phones are 😂

        • Well when Apple makes replacement parts cost the same price as new phones, and encourage you to replace things that aren't broken it isn't much different

      • +7

Its 1200 for a One Plus. Lol.

      • +3

Apple doesn’t need a higher RAM to be more efficient. It is supported by their own A bionic chips

Edit: Apple has 5G, good excellent camera too, and local support and the phone can prolly last up to 5 years (based on my iPhone XS Max still not showing it’s old age yet)

      • +4

This is $1,200. How is that a “fraction” of the cost? iPhone 11 is the same price.

I remember the days when OnePlus phones were a fraction of the cost of flagships. I guess they were doing the usual strategy of running at a loss, now they’re trying to recoup that and start making profits.

        • +1

Why would you compare a just released phone to an almost 3 year old model?

          • @nzcoops: Because the iPhone 11 is still usable 3 years after its release thanks to Apple still releasing updates for them. As opposed to this OP phone, which undoubtedly will stop receiving updates within a year or two.

            • @russelg: LOL, "undoubtedly"

              • @mickeyjuiceman: Yes. You're never going to get more than 2 years support from them. My OP6 stopped receiving updates within 2 years of release, and that was before they started shitting out 4 devices a year.

      • I can't stand the iPhone but I'd take it over shitty OnePlus. They used to make great phones, with great software at great prices, now they're overpriced ColorOS junk.

      • TBF, 99/100 is technically "a fraction."

      • “Fraction” he says.

Know nothing about math equations, he says.

      • All that and Android probably still runs "ok".

  • +3

    Laughs in Nokia 3310 😂

  • +18

One plus has gone down hill in recent years. Would rather go for Samsung (was a Samsung hater myself until using note 9) or other brands

    • +1

I'm pretty disappointed with my S21 FE. There aren't enough options at the moment.

      • S20 FE 5G kills imo. Sister picked up one for $550 on the education store a while ago. Really good value at that price imo.

        • One OS update left and about 2 years of security left. Depending on price difference, it's likely worth considering something else.

          • @ihfree: As long as most mobile apps support the OS for a few years after the last update then to me it doesn't matter too much. I basically don't use any new functionality that new android OS bring in these days so having the latest doesn't bother me. Since one UI on Samsung and android 9 I think everything has felt clean/usable enough.

With that being said, obviously go for newer devices with more future proofing if the price point is the same, which it currently is, no good deals on the S20 FE. For me the S20 FE would be a no brainer under $500, and worth considering at $550 these days, but I guess we'll see if that ever happens.

    • +1

Same thought here. Have OP7P, was never too keen on Samsung, but strongly considering for next phone. Not disappointed with OP, just not impressed either.

    • I agree. Like Xiaomi, 1+, the prices of those brands are now too high and losing competitive ability

  • +3

A phone that’s better than Apple? No way!

    I prefer lettuce

    • +1

      We're not all millionaires

      • +1

        So you’re saying there’s a chance!!??

      • I can't afford to eat lettuce, I am but a poor man who must get by eating iPhones.

  • +2

Had this for a month now and honestly, it's a beast and I am super happy with it. I am going to stick with OP for one more time before jumping.

  • +5

Can't recommend oneplus now, too expensive, too many issues and there are other phones in the price range that do a better job

    • -1

Yup its disappointing. Samsung and pixel beats oneplus any day

  • +8

the "flagship killer", now at flagship prices.

    • +2

they came to became the thing they sought to destroy

      • +3

You should work in their marketing department and call their next phone the Anakin

    • More like flagship loser

  • +2

    they have lost their way.

  • +1

Have they started selling in Australia again? The Amazon site says official au and the oneplus.com au site has the new phones on it rather than a sorry we don’t support Oz anymore story

  • -7

Why would anyone pay over $1000 for a Chinese brand Android phone. Sheejus. You can buy a 2 year old used iPhone Max for $1000 on Facebook. Just buy the used iPhone, pay Apple to change the battery for $100-$150 and now you have a phone that will last without any tweaking or issues for the next 3-4 years.

    • +10

Because people don't want to live in the Apple walled garden.

Correct question, entirely the wrong solution.

      • +1

Most people who claim this can't give a reason as to why they need the openness of Android.

        • +3

          Here's where I think it's more open:

          • NFC is more open
          • Easier to manage files
          • I have a few apps that don't come from the app store
          • Features come to Android firstor availability through third parties - eg swype/Glide typing
          • More customisation (eg launcher, keyboard)
          • Less restriction on various apps. I think SSH tunneling is more locked down on iOS

For the majority of users it won't make too big a difference.

    • Why would anyone pay over $1000 for a Chinese brand Android phone. Sheejus. You can buy a 10 year old used Samsung S2 for $50 on Facebook. Just buy the used Samsung, pay a repairer to change the battery for $50 and now you have a phone that will last without any tweaking or issues for the next 3-4 years.

Could make that argument about any older phone, ya donkey …

  • +8

OnePlus was great till it's founder Carl Pei left. He got what people wanted - Flagship specs at a lower prices with no bloatware or locked bootloaders.

It's really just another Oppo subsidiary now.

Carl started a new phone company called Nothing which by coincidence is launching their new phone today.

Unlike OnePlus they're going to sell to Australia directly.

    • Pretty sure you'll find it was Pete Lau (still with onePlus) who was responsible for bringing cyanogenmod to onePlus, not Pai. It was a team effort all around, and deifying one individual for all the good decisions a company has made is flawed.

    • Let's just see if nothing can replace old oneplus

  • +3

Had a OnePlus in the past (OP5) and it was an excellent phone, good price, good performance, stable OS. These days I go for Motorola as I haven't found anything compelling about OP now. If they're pricing at Samsung levels I'll just get a Samsung. Since I dislike bloatware in general Motorola ticks most of the boxes. I'm a mid-range user so don't really need flagship features. The flagship features tend to be in the CPU(for gaming) or camera (software and lens). The mid-range has these too but I've yet to tax them in a way that says I should have gotten a flagship phone instead.

Also when it inevitably breaks, slows down or glass gets shattered it just doesn't sting as much to replace.

    • +2

Agreed, Motorola is the new OnePlus. Near stock Android and flagship specs for what was $799 earlier this year

      • Only issue is the camera not so good. Heavier than similar models at same price points

  • +5

The 370 dollar F3 was the banger value for money. They've gone up to 450 now.

One Plus has gone downhill so fast, it's amazing they are still in business. Who buys this stuff at 1200.

    • +1

The Poco has taken OnePlus's slot (sorta)

      • Yeah I agree. Apart from having to deal with MiUi (A problem fixed with custom roms if you are into that), Xiaomi have taken the One Plus value for money slot. Putting a custom rom on my F3 has transformed it into a beast, I am amazed at how much phone you get for 370.

  • +6

The 7 Pro was peak Oneplus IMO, after which they no longer seemed to align with their moto "never settle".

    • They settled for worser os and higher price that I know

      I don't think i know

  • +3

    Performance? Inferior
    Cameras? Inferior
    Battery life? Inferior
    Thermals? Inferior
RAM? Sure, but Apple's RAM management >> any Android manufacturer except for maybe Google
Build quality? Inferior - you can literally snap it in half
    Software support? Inferior
    Customer Service? Non-existent

I'll give you the price, but it's still $1200 and if you're gonna be spending $1k+ for a phone I'd say buy nice or buy twice.

I struggle to see how this is better than an iPhone.

    • +1

esp considering you can get high end Samsung's (Ultras) at (1-1.2kish) at times

    • iPhone 6 only bends. Complete destruction is another win for OPPO.

      • +1

        Yes, but will it blend?

        • Easily. You can even snap it in half first.

    • Truth is RAM quantity means nothing. Pure specs don't mean Jack

  • Linus had a recent video about oneplus and the software issues. Best to stay away from this brand for now.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GNoelvk6S4

  • Has anyone claimed TRS on amazon puchases when going overseas? Know if they allow to claim on items like this?

  • +1

I risked it a OP6 and OP 8 Pro. No issues fortunately. Beware though youre up shit creek if it breaks down.

    • +1

Same here, got a 6 7 Pro and 8 all direct from China (Banggood) never had any issues luckily. Still on the 8 now

  • -4

I have a few friends that continually bash me for sticking to my iPhone 11.

Every year they tell me they have the most amazing tech that an Android phone offers, they switch between Samsung, Google, Oppo, Oneplus…

    I'm still rocking my iPhone.

    I get the sense you're like them…

    • +1

      What a bizarre non-comparison

  • +5

A phone that’s better than Apple?

A pretty meaningless statement. All that statement does is show that you have a chip on your shoulder. The other comments here suggest you're unable to be objective.

It would be much better to say why the phone is better than a comparable iOS device. As far as I can tell, it's RAM and storage capacity and that's it.

    • The user experience is not better than Apple. Only Google Pixel OS and Apple iOS gives that great user experience.

Oxygen OS was the go til 8T or pro then it's all screwed up

  • +1

3 years of Major Android OS Update and 4 Years of Security Patch

Still not as good as Apple is it?

  • +2

This phone is actually a foldable!

  • I have both phones at home. Sorry, the OnePlus is nowhere near Apple, especially when living in Australia.

  • +1

I've had 2 OP phones over the years. OP3T and OP8T.
Both have been really great value for money, and performed well, but have fallen short in some areas that drive me crazy.

The latest OOS Update for the 8T is rubbish, or so I've heard. I'm too afraid to try it because I rely on my phone and the stories of people's phones being wrecked by it put me off.

Also, the lack of support for these devices in Aus really sucks. Can't get 5G to work on any network I've tried and also VOLTE is seemingly quite problematic. I believe you can work around these things with custom roms and hacks but I can't be bothered and just don't have the interest in tinkering with a phone.

I think my days of OP are over. Especially now they're going for over a grand. Which is a shame, because they use to be pretty cool.

    • Agree Oneplus used to be great. Good price points value for money. I loved my thunder purple OnePlus 6t

  • Phone wars…is it 2010 all over again?

  • +1

    Won't buy OP anymore.

    • +2

Agree oneplus 7 pro was the last decent model. Rest are rubbish.

Not worth over 1k it's more like 600-800 max
