USB DUST CAPS - Cheapest I Could Find at around $1 for Two

25

I started looking a couple weeks ago here : http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/70319#comment-889138

Mods may delete this as there is no Oz ABN but there is no Oz supplier and item is very low value. Thought I'd put it out anyway as I'm sure I'm not the only one thinks USB sticks should have caps and it took a while to find these.

Dust caps arrived and they are a perfect fit, and good rubber with a place for stringing a lanyard. Cost about 50c each from HK and were combined and sent registered, about 6 work days for delivery. From ebay member http://myworld.ebay.com.au/ilavapple/?_trksid=p4340.l2559 S/he was easy to work with.

Cheng has only some stuff on ebay and the rest you can see in the links below. I couldn't find an Oz supplier and the others, US and Taiwan, were not as cheap.

I got ten of each. (USB Type A Male) http://hk.f1.page.auctions.yahoo.com/hk/auction/1129061965?u… And Type A Female : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261015649533?ssPageName=STRK:MEWN…

(All dust covers)

  • …why?
I always throw these things away.
I don't think this post has much value, except to people who can read Chinese.

      Google Translate?

You wouldn't want to perform a financial transaction through Google Translate. Besides, the following translated section causes me concern:

"Reduced into dust, slow down the oxidation protection of idle terminals, extend the life of the machine. PC, Mac, mobile phones, audio-visual equipment, any digital products are combined."

I do not want my PC to be combined with a Mac, and consequently be "reduced into dust".

      • Poor person may be using IE or something…. Not everyone has come over to the smart side!!!

          ?

        • Google Translate works just fine for me in IE.

edit: and when I say fine, I mean pretty rubbish. Just like it is in any other browser. :)

I think what amy_c may have been alluding to was that Chrome automagically pops up saying This site is in <insert language> do you want to translate? Nice feature but not essential by any means.

        • Why would someone neg me for explaining something. Sometimes this community is beyond me.

Don't most USB sticks come with caps anyway?? & you're paying 50c each for a rubber one??
Considering most of us are paying $1/GB for a USB stick, 50c for a rubber cap seems quite excessive!!!

    • Agreed, they're not worth 50c. It couldn't cost more than 1c to make, and I'm sure they could still make a profit on that.

I think you can live without dust caps. Sandisk cruzer don't have dust caps. Actually, all of the swinging protector ones don't have dust caps. If you are so worried about dust, you should also get dust caps for all of the usb ports on your computer.

re "If you are so worried about dust, you should also get dust caps for all of the usb ports on your computer"

I dunno, the USB ports on my computer don't spend a significant amount of time rattling around in the bottom of my bag, nor do they spend any time in my pockets (with pocket lint etc).

      • actually without clicking the link my assumption was these were for PC (or laptop specifically) ports to prevent dust dirt being put inside. On a portable device a lot of things can happen to the ports.

..looking at the site I don't know why but I like the look of the PCIe strip covers on the board - always through they looked funny exposed.

probably good for those who suffer with Amathophobia

Errrr… a bit of masking tape does the same job. Much cheaper. :)

  • ripoff

  • I don't doubt a few read what I posted and the few who may need the caps now know where to find them. There are just two that cheap - given the market, the others make up on postage and flim flam.

It seems to me from recent experience 'no dust cap' is the new fashion. Maybe because not many use them anyway?

I am reminded of a cat fight for some reason, coming to full moon? Bon Voyage! :)
