  • Nice find. Temperature regulated too. Wish I had more time to do electronics.

They seem to have a good price on AAA NiMH low self-discharge cells at $0.79 but those are backordered.

    • +2

The AAA LSD cells are the goods. Excellent price and good performance. I've had some for about a year.

    • I buy from these guys all the time andhave been very happy . But when stuff is on backorder it's very hit and miss as to how long you can be waiting .

  • -6

    Showing as $16.64 for me

    • +3

Probably because you didn't read the instructions. Go the item page, then in another tab have a browse around the shop (or just wait the 5 minutes), and a pop up offer will appear on the item tab.

      • lol thanks

  • +3

    Ordering:

    • 2 reduces shipping to $7 -each-

    • 4 reduces shipping to $3.5 -ea-

You get to fill-up a 7 Kg satchel.

IF THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT,
    ORDER WITH FRIENDS & SAVE

  • Nice price, got one. Although their usual price $16.64 so it's a 90c saving lol. Kinda makes you wonder why these are so cheap when they're $40ish on eBay.

Bit annoying how you can't combine items from HK's different warehouses and their Australia warehouse seems to stock like 3 items.

    • do u really think that its fair to have one order from 2 different countries? They have to pay 2 separate shipping charges!

      • +1

I read the complaint in two parts:
        1. You can't combine shipping from their three HK warehouses, and
        2. The Australian warehouse stocks a limited number of goods, increasing the potential for requiring shipping from one (or more) of the three HK warehouse(s).

        • Yeah what he said, be nice if the Australian warehouse stocked some basics like silicone wire or alligator clamps.

  • +16

I'm thinking about buying it..but not sure what i would use it for. that's when you know you have a problem.

    • Think of it as insurance. Maybe if you buy it, none of your electronics will ever break down in a way that this could repair it!

    • +2

My friend, you way passed the problem stage. The minute you reach OzBargain your already down the rabbit hole. from here on, it only gets darker. and emptier pockets!

  • Geez bought a $250 goot with $50 off at jaycar and thought that was good deal but this is great. It's nice to have a temp feedback.

  • it's USD $24.73, so actually AUD $25.70(with PayPal evil rates)
PayPal Conversion Rate as of 30 May 2012: 1 Australian Dollar = 0.962577 US Dollars

      28 degrees mastercard…

  • This would have been good for my DS Lite's that needed fuses re-soldered, don't have a use for it but would love to buy it for DIY stuff :/

  • Quick question. where is hobbyking located now? they closed their store a while ago.

Also, does the wait 2 min price reduction work only if ur not signed in or even if you sign in?

  • Bought thanks $24.73 USD
Paid with CC through paypal $25.87 AUD

  • Very nice find! Wanted two but just bought four to make the most of the extra postage fee bringing them down to $20.12c (AUD) each. These are rip-offs of the good ol' $300 Hakko units from years ago, even the plastic casing, vents and stand design are identical. I've had my Hakko for around 15 years so if these cheapies last at least a year then they'd already proven their worth. Lets just hope they heat up as nicely :)

  • Has anyone used one of these units before?
If yes, whats the story with replacement tips? Quality?

  • +1

Wow great price. I purchased one of these a few years ago. They work really well for SMD work but I would not recommend them for anything but SMD or small components. The Tip is just to small to carry any heat. Mine now lives in the shed as a spare and has been replaced with a unit that also has hot air reflow.

Funny thihng happened with the post. I got alerted to it while watching some hobby king video's on youtube.

  • I got one! Thanks OP!

The discount showed even though I wasn't a member yet

  • Do these things come with a replaceable tip?

    • +1

Yeah I think they do. You can get it on ebay.
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SOLDER-SOLDERING-IRON-STATION-Tip…

There's heaps. Just search up "936 soldering".

Btw just got an email informing me that my order has been shipped. Item was purchased yesterday night before I posted this up.

    • For a quality soldering iron, tips cost $30 to $50.

Perhaps best to think of this offer as you are buying a tip, and the soldering iron is thrown in for free?

  • Thanks fellas!

  • They're out of stock now I think. Asked for an email to alert me

  • +1

For serious use you cant go past a Hakko FX-888… simple perfect for the professional… Great for SMD and all sorts of work :)

    • that's what I have too, but this still looks like great value

      • well will expect quality on par with a fake brand so depends if you see value in that..

    • I am looking for the Hakko FX-888 too. Do you know where to get one cheap? But for $26 I'll get this one in the mean time.

  • +1

Yep, out of stock now. My order got cancelled while I was fiddling with Paypal vs Visa. :(

    • I've just ordered one now. Got an email that said my order has been forwarded to the warehouse for dispatch???

  • Just got one too thanks!
Says its backordered….. so i guess a bit of waiting…
Hope this is of good quality..

  • The $15.74 offer popup is still appearing even though out of stock lol.

  • +7

Don't want to wait 2 minutes? Just execute the following line of JavaScript (Firefox: ctrl + shift + k):

    setTimeout("document.getElementById('fixeddiv').style.visibility='visible'; ajaxcats('livediscount.asp?id=19239','livediscountspan')", 10);

    • That's excellent! I will try to use this in all of my future purchases.

  • The offer will also come up if you use another browser.

  • Too slow :(

I'll still Back order at this price though!!

  • -1

If you don't want to wait 2 minutes for the popup, you get the $15.74 price if you just sign up for an account and log in, in fact, all the prices revert to the "discount" price when you are logged in, no waiting!

  • No mention of back ordering i when just purchased mine.

"This is an email to inform you that we have received your order and it has been sent to the warehouse print queue for dispatch."

Yay, no more replacing capacitors in monitors or TV's with my underpowered, too long shafted ,Supercheap elcheapo. : )

  • +1

bought one of these on ebay for $50 few months ago :( mine came with 5 tips tho which is good because the default tip is too tiny. works well heats up fast. only complaints the plastic stand is garbage and the soldering iron is very cheap quality.

    • "the soldering iron is very cheap quality"

OK will give it a miss then, cheers.

  • I remember thinking "hmm i wish i had a soldering iron right now" a long time ago. so i bought one plus this has adjustable heat setting - what ever that means

  • +7

Awesome, I needed one of these. I destroyed the soldering iron in electronics class when I was in school and I never paid them back. I posted it to the school lol

  • +1

    BACKORDER!

You can be assured that whenever they get more stock of these, it will cost $60.99

    • So what does this mean for orders already placed?

      • Nothing.

  • Awesome! thanks OP have been waiting a long time for a good deal on a solder iron, hopefully will be shipped in time for me to install the ODAC in my O2… (yes I know it is on backorder but I am patient)

  • +1

FWIW - DSE regularly have their Temp controlled irons on spec ~$60.
    This one: http://dicksmith.com.au/product/T2200/temperature-controlled…
    Quality is fine.
Think this is a case where you need to spend to get the quality.
Nothing worse than a crap iron with a cheesy tip.

    • +1

Had one of those for over 20 years. Still going strong.

    • I've used one of these before too and it was pretty great. Have used various Hakkos and a lovely Metcal and this little DSE thing gave them a run for their money.

  • I have one of these that is nearly identical except mine has a temp display. It is an outstanding soldering iron! Just make sure you get some different tips for it as the one it comes with is waaay too fine for general soldering.

  • Shame you can't backorder Ni-Mh AA/AAA batteries in the same order :(

  • Just got my soldering iron today. Very happy with the speed in postage and build quality is fantastic for such a cheap unit.

    • Cheers OP, just got mine today as well.

  • Has anyone who got a 'back ordered' status got theirs yet?

    Cheers

  • Still waiting on mine :(

  • +1

OK just got off their (pretty shocking) 24h customer chat, no ETA… Can order from international warehouse for $16 more.
Thinking of cancelling and ordering a better quality one, what is the best under $100?

You are now chatting with : Kathy (Customer Service)
    Kathy:
Thank you for contacting the HobbyKing Support Team. How may I help you?

    You:
    Hi
I was discussing a question with another rep when we got disconnected
I am tying to figure the ETA of an order
    [order num deleted]
I understand no stock in Aus warehouse, but there is stock in international warehouse

    Kathy:
    One moment please.

    You:
what I am trying to figure is what timeframe are we talking about here

    Kathy:
the item is in back order, would you like to wait or cancel the order?

    You:
well that depends on how long it could take
it has alreadt been a month
I would expect you to at least know how long more should I expect it to be

    Kathy:
We do not have restock dates for items from our overseas warehouse

    You:
OK so if it is in the internation warehouse does that mean that stock would soon be sent to the Aus warehouse?

    Kathy:
No the restock date is just for international warehouse

    You:
    I don't understnd…
I thought there was stock in international warehouse
and that you don't have restock date for Aus warehouse

    Kathy:
that is correct, but i am unfamiliar of the restock process for our overseas warehouse

    You:
So basically you cannot provide me any sort of time line?
Could take a month, could take a year?

    Kathy:
    not for the Australian warehouse

    You:
    Is there someone that could?

    Kathy:
no, i asked already, would you like to cancel the order and make another one with our international warehouse? the shipping will be more expensive and the delivery time for the parcel will be slightly longer, depending on the postage method

    You:
    what would the difference be?

    Kathy:
    your shipping options are
    Air Parcel (AUSTRALIA) 1500g - 1999g
    $24.77
UPS Express 3 Day Courier (Australia) 2kg
    $38.03
EMS Express to Australia (MAX 2kg)
    $47.82
    International (Registered) Air Mail 2kg
    $29.79

    You:
so you will refund the $8.99 and charge the new shipping fee?

    Kathy:
I will cancel your entire order, refund the money to your bonus points and then you can use the points when you place the new order in our international warehouse

    You:
OK no thanks, if I decide to cancel my order I would rather get my money refunded
I can always place a new order myself

  • +1

This chat took over 30 minutes.. when I asked for the refund, she closed the chat window. Dodge.

hi, i'd like to get an ETA on order 20045xxxxx
    Ivy:
we are sorry that we have not ETA for this item
    Ivy:
but have stock in international warehouse
    You:
ok, so when will it reach the australian warehouse?
    You:
    hello?
    Ivy:
, we are sorry that we do not have an estimated date of arrival at this moment
    You:
ok, can you cancel the order then
    Ivy:
    cancel whole order? right ?
    You:
    yes
    Ivy:
ok, refund to hobbyking account ?
    You:
    no, full refund to paypal
    Ivy:
    ?
    You:
    i paid with paypal
    You:
please refund to my paypal account

    • Yes I couldn't bother posting it but prior to the above chat 2 other chats were closed in the middle (that is how I already knew what was going on) and I probably spent around an hour and a half on it.

It is times like this that I really appreciate PayPal's buyer protection…

I might cancel and wait for a good deal on the Dick Smith one.

      EDIT: English…

Hi cmdwedge. Just saw your post after I went through much the same. I've also raise an issue ticket & sent them a copy of the 'Live Chat' log. Thought I'd post the log here too for anyone interested. BTW - the session went for over an hour & a half -

You are now chatting with : Kathy (Customer Service)

Kathy: Thank you for contacting the HobbyKing Support Team. How may I help you?
      You: Hi
You: Can I have an update on order 2004599298
You: It is saying on backorder - but it has been nearly 1 month
      You: are you there???
Kathy: One moment please while I check your Order.
Kathy: Regarding the order, it is pending for backorder item and it will be in stock in AUS warehouse in about 30-45 days. Would you like to have it replaced or removed?
You: IS that 30 - 45 days from NOW from when i placed the order?
Kathy: Please kindly note that the most updated Estimated Time of Arrival for the item is 30-45 days.
You: Why is this taking so long? it was in stock when I placed the order???
Kathy: We have checked that the item is not in stock in the order.
You: do you have stock in a different warehouse?
Kathy: The item in stock in Hongkong warehouse.
      Kathy: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idP…
You: why can't you send it from there? this would take less than 30 days. It is ridiculous and totally unacceptable to tell someone to wait 2 and a half months after they have place an order - there was no mention at the time the order was placed
Kathy: In this case, you may consider canceling the order and puchasing from AUS warehouse.
You: What are you talking about. I did purchase from AUS warehouse - a month ago !!!
      You: Is anyone there?
Kathy: Sorry, you may consider purchasing from Hongkong warehouse as it is in stock in Hongkong warehouse.
You: Why do I need to re-purchase? Why can't you just honour your current order & ship it the fastest way possible?
Kathy: Please kindly note that we will ship the order as soon as it is in stock.
You: But you said the item IS in stock in Hong Kong. Please fulfil you obligations to honour this order and ship it from Hong Kong if it will be quicker !!!
You: From your web site - If you have a product on backorder the order will be held in reserve until the backordered item is in stock. Our standard wait time on backorders is no more than 14 days. All items in an order are reserved and removed from stock for you once paid for.
You: Your web site says - backorders take no more than 14 days
You: REMEBER - the item WAS in stock in AUS when I placed the order
Kathy: Please kindly note that the order will be updated as soon as it is in stock.
You: Why do you not respond to my questions? Do you understand what I am saying ?????
Kathy: Please kindly note that the updated Estiamted Time of Arrival for the item is 30-45 days. You may consider canceling the order and purchasing from Hongkong warehouse if cannot wait for it.
You: Why are you being so rude by just repeating the same response. Why won't you answer my request? DO YOU SPEAK ENGLISH ? If not, can I please speak to someone who does?
Kathy: Please kindly note that ETA varies from items to items, for this item, it will be in stock in 30-45 days.
You: CAN YOU SHIP IT FROM HONG KONG ?
Kathy: The order is placed in AUS warehouse and we can only ship the item from AUS warehouse. If you would like to have it shipped from Hongkong warehouse, you may consider placing an order from Hongkogn warehouse.
You: I have just checked. If I reorder from Hong Kong, it will cost me AU $16 more. Why do I have to pay more OR wait so long. This is very. very poor customer service. You accepted my money a month ago and the site showed in stock at the time. Can I order it from Hong Kong at the same cost?
      You: Is anyone there?
You: More than 20 minutes and no response !
You: Hmmm. More than half an hour. Perhaps you could at least let me know you are not interested in trying to help so I do not have to keep waiting for your response.
You: It is now clear, since you have not responded for more than 45 minutes, that you are not interested in trying to assist. It is sad that your customers mean so little to you.

News! they say it should be in within the next 30 days…

However note that Paypal buyer's protection has a 45 day limit, which in my case expires next week:

    (3) e. File a Dispute/Escalate to a Claim. In order to be considered for the PayPal Buyer Complaint Policy, you must first file a dispute online in the PayPal Resolution Centre and attempt to resolve the dispute with the seller. The dispute must be filed within 45 calendar days of the date that you made the payment to the seller.

In the event that the dispute remains unresolved then you must escalate the dispute to a claim under the Buyer Complaint Policy within 20 calendar days of the date you filed the dispute.

Not sure if I should cancel or wait…

    You:

I was wondering if there is any progress
    Kathy:

One moment please while I check your Order.
    You:

    ok
    Kathy:

This item Sold-ST-AUS is on backorder and the estimated time of arrival is within 30 days
    You:

is that arrival to the warehouse?
    Kathy:

Yes, it is only estimated time
    You:

Since PayPal buyer's protection expires next week, can you refund me and then charge me again?
    Kathy:

Please note that if I cancel this order now, I am afraid you will not be able to place new order with same product since it is on backorder.

I finally got my refund from them!!!! omg…
was backordered for 1 month!! then i quickly filed paypal dispute and was resolved in 1 week

    You: HI
    Ivy: hello
You: I have my order on backorder STILL
    Order Number:20045xxxxx
    How much longer?
Ivy: One moment please while I check your Order.
    You: Thanks
Ivy: Sorry, we have only the restocking information for international warehouse sir
You: Please get someone to email me the advice?
    You: Hang on
You: I ordered it from Australia
You: It was in stock when I ordered
You: I got an email saying it had been dispatched
You: Now I am told its on back order
You: So where is it in stock?
    You: Hello?
Ivy: Soldering Station with AdjustaBLE HEAT RANGE WITH US PLUG,
we have only this item in our warehouse now
    You: That would be acceptable
You: Send me that item please
Ivy: this is the product ID sir, Sold-ST-USA
    You: Hmm -No good
    You: It states only 110v
You: if it was 110-220 I would accept it
You: can you please check if it is international voltage
You: It probably is 110-220, if so I can change the plug
Ivy: we are not sure sir,
we would refer you to our product specialist for more information
    Product Specialist 5: Hello
Product Specialist 5: Please wait a moment, I will check for 220V one
    You: Ok
Can you have them contact me via email ASAP please….
    Thankyou for your assistance

Can anyone that received one please confirm if it really is ONLY 110v
    As opposed to 110-220v

    • Mine says "INPUT VOLTAGE:240V/AC" and "RATED CURRENT:1A" on a sticker located at the back of the station. Is this what you were after?

      • Yep
        So the 110 v 1 will be only 110v
So my plug trick won't work.
        Darn.
        Many thanks vt

Only ever order from HobbyKing International Warehouse
(& even then only if desperate)
My read is they did this to clear stock from Aust Warehouse, got Ozbargained and oversold.
Now are dragging the chain hoping we will cancel our orders so they dont lose even more on this way too cheap soldering iron.

    The Saga continues
Product Specialist 5:We only have a simple soldering iron for 220V voltage right now:
    http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idp…
Product Specialist 5:Soldering station for 220V is sold out at the moment
You: Is the american one Only 110v or is it 110-220v
I could change the plug if it is 110-220v Sold-ST-USA
Product Specialist 5:It is American only, soldering iron would overheat with 220V voltage
    You: OK
How do I find the ETA of the 220v?
I have a basic already so only want the adjustable station
Product Specialist 5:I don't have exact date, but it should come in stock within 30 days
    You:LOL
You:I was told that 14 days ago
Product Specialist 5: in the international warehouse
You: It was in stock in Hong Kong then
    You: But not in Australia
Product Specialist 5:Sorry, but there is no info on re-stocking in AUS warehouse…
You:So you are telling me its not in stock in either of your 3 Hong Kong warehouses
    and also not in Australia?
    You:Is HobbyKing on Facebook?
You:I might make some enquiry on the wall
Product Specialist 5:It is sold out right now in the HK warehouse,
but should come back in stock
    You: Ok thats good
    but you cant say when
You: and when I enquire in another month I will be told 30 days
You:It was in stock when I ordered
You: I just bought a $300 RC Gas Buggy for my son but not from you guys
    This is quite poor
Ivy:because if you do not order it we would not reserve for you
    You:Hi Ivy
It was in stock when I ordered.
Can you please ask someone to email me an ETA and I will make a decision from there
Ivy:may i have the product ID please?
    You:Thanks Ivy
    Sold-ST-AUS
    You:Order Number:2004xxxxx
You:Please get someone to email me within 48 hours
    Ivy:to prevent back order item,
we would suggest you to order it from our international warehouse
    You:Ok
I appreciate your advice only how was I to know
Next time perhaps if I ever use your service again
Having said that you have done a good job and I am happy with what you personally have
done, only the company you work for, it sucks…
    Ivy: we sorry sir
    You:thats fine
How do I specify international warehouse?
Ivy: in product page there should be header like this to specify that it is from
    our international warehouse
    http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/images/new11/int_he…
You: Thanks very much Ivy have a great day
    Adios, ciao and zài jiàn

    • Yes… not the best company to deal with…

  • Since the cancel whole order 'button' in 'My Account' would keep my money as their store credit. Yesterday, I sent a message to 'Support' and request them to cancel the whole order and refund the money back to my PayPal account. I got the response the same day that they would take care of my request. Today, I got the message from PayPal that the refund has arrived. I am very impressed with the speed of their support.
