These are great units Bio Security QLD use these spec machines before they were replaced with 11th gen I5s only see one unit faulty at my workplace so pretty reliable and tough

  • Great laptop for the oldies.

    • +3

Why is that, wouldn't a bigger screen be better if you're old?

      • Because it's light. My oldies have a 24" screen to plug in if they want. But they like it being light so they can carry it around. HP are usually solid units.

The advantage being old, if.you get your cataracts done, your eyesight is close to perfect. :-)
        .

    • -1

      why the oldies?

      you being ageist?

  • Just checked the specs, battery isn't user replaceable (according to HP). Am assuming that's the weakest point in a refurb laptop.

    • +7

Care to share where it you read thatI?
Battery should be easy to replace. Method as per HP instructions

      • +2

https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c05898590#AbT12 "NOTE: Battery is internal and not replaceable by customer."

        • +7

          Nice find.
What a strange thing for HP to write. It should read. "Battery is internal and replaceable by anyone with a screwdriver basic hands on skills!

          • @Borg: yeah. they just put that note there so they can't be blamed when 1 guy out of 100 spills his beer into it. "we told you not to go in there!"

            • @jbird84: Them warnings are usually for the numpties.

I was about to buy a macbook pro but im heading to Europe for a month and will have to take my laptop to study while im there. Not sure if I should spend over 2k on a laptop (even though im going to get really good insurance to cover it) When I can spend $400-$500 on a laptop like this im not super worried about if it gets damaged, lost etc.

    • +2

I can't see how a $2k device + insurance would help you study better vs a $400-500 device - insurance, but if you have disposable income, it's a moot point.

      • +12

def doesn't belong at Ozbargain with such reckless spending power

        • if it helps im doing it with gift cards with the 20x reward points and using the AOC education store

        • +2

Unless it was a $4k laptop they got for $2k

      • -3

The trackpad alone is worth the extra. Windows PC trackpads are unusable, so unless they'll be taking a mouse.

    • +9

Get a cheapy. Having an expensive bit of kit whilst travelling= something else to worry about. Plus nobody will bother stealing a beat up old HP :)

The only exception is if you need to work without power, you'll get a few hours from one of these on battery, ~18 hours from a new MacBook.

    • +2

Are you travelling about or mostly staying put?
A MacBook is highly desirable, and theft in European tourist areas is quite common.

It's not just the device theft, but what about losing your work? (Make sure it's backed up) and the ability to keep working afterwards (i.e. can you get the software installed again?

But the battery life is lovely on a MacBook

      • Travelling quite a lot. I also want the GST return when travelling which is worth nearly $300.
Might just have to be consciouse and keep it well looked after. Like I said ill defintely get insurance.

Good Points though. Might back everything up on a USB and update to the cloud regularly as well.

    • +4

Buy this one. Take it on tour. Sell it for $300+ when you get back. Cost of studying in Europe works out to $25 per week, for a unit you're not going to be worried over.

  • can the memory be upgraded to 16gb?

  • +3

I wonder how many nits it has? Notebookcheck.com says it comes with either a 220, 300 or 400 nits display.

    • +5

just for reference, my 6 year old son has about 600 nits.

      • 500, he gave 100 to mine.

      • +2

        He must be brilliant.

  • +1

Is the G5 830 touchscreen, by any chance?

  • +3

Can these be powered via USB-C?

    • +2

They have a Thunderbolt port and the specs mention an (optional) USB-C power brick so most likely yes.

  • Thanks for the deal, Can you play games like apex legends on this? Can you edit videos on this laptop? Is this good value for money/ is it decent bang for buck compared to similar priced laptops? thanks in advance

    • +7

      No
      Yes
      Yes
      Yes

  • Listing doesn't mention the GPU?

  • +1

just curious.. when we buy second hand goods like this, when we get invoice with gst, can we still claim TRS on it?
does it matter if the first buyer has already claimed TRS or not ?

    • +1

If it says GST amount on the invoice then you would get it.

Make sure it is in your personal name and no mention of business name on it. I got something sent to work as personal name "c/o company / address" and TRS wasn't happy.

  • just checking mine, i bought elitebook 840 G3 i5-6300u for $600 4 years ago!
damn this is so cheap now

    • +12

      Should have waited.

      • +1

wait and watch to be precise !
i just lack of the nerd factor on me

  • +1

    What is the screen resolution?

    • seems to be FullHD 1920x1080 - https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c05898590#AbT4

I have read of other HP, maybe G6, that look cheap refurbished - but I saw original new reviews saying 'disappointing screen' - like poor colour rendering, poor visibility from an angle, or brightness outdoors, or such

which may be why the screen display is not mentioned topline for this 'deal'

on closer reading - fine print below the headline says '13.3" FHD Antiglare LED UWVA screen' - Ultra Wide Viewing Angle ?

      • The 830 g5 and g6 share the same chassis. The build is identical, only difference is the CPU.

      • Some HPs have a stupid "privacy" screen that looks like ass.

        • The highest speced model of the HP business laptops have the privacy screen which can be toggled on and off when needed. However under office lights at the right angle if light hits the display and it isn't anti glare the screen can have a rainbow affect which is off putting. However most people in offices connect it to a dock with external screens anyway. The privacy screen is really only when you're out in public. Anyways this listed 830 g5 definitely won't have a privacy screen for $400

      • Thanks. I overlooked the FHD bit.

  • To me the Dell (listed by OP) seems to be a good laptop for under $300 but I have not much idea about computers. Could someone please tell me that it is enough for normal work purposes - use of MS suite and running of some VBA macros - nothing too heavy? 128GB should be enough space for me.

Oh and would this have USB C charging? How do I look for that in laptops online?

    • +3

      Do not buy the dell.
To keep it simple, you want the CPU to be an 'i5' and a model which is a four-digit number starting with an '8' or higher.

Pay the extra hundred bucks to buy the listed HP Elitebook 830 G5 (i5 8350u). It's absolutely worth paying that little bit more in this case.

      • +1

I am not sure I completely agree with this, the dell has a 1440p screen which is a pretty damn nice feature in a $300 laptop. the trade off is the laptop is 2 generations older and will have worse performance, but my laptop has an i5 5200u and have never felt particularly limited in performance for basic work uses.

I just saw that the dell is also touchscreen, honestly I think its the best option there as long as you are not expecting massive longevity

        • +1

Also, HP has 8th Intel CPU so supports Windows 11, if you care about that - Dell one mentioned does not support Win11

        • I very much doubt that the Dell actually has a 1440p screen. It's probably a c/p error by the seller. (Most likely copied the specs from the HDMI port.)

    • +3

enough for normal work purposes - use of MS suite and running of some VBA macros - nothing too heavy

2 core i5-6xxx series is enough for general work. Just get 8GB ram or more. I have a Lenovo x270 which is same CPU. If you are not using it for intensive work the 2 core (4 threads) is okay.

      • thats mine, bought elitebook 840 G3 i5-6300u for $600 4 years ago! also refub

    • +1

highlighted offer is the only one i'd recommend

cpu too weak on the cheaper options, they just scrape by for casual computing today - pay the extra hundred and buy the g5, the others will just suck the life out of you while you stare are a progress animation

  • anyone know what the screen brightness and weight is on this one?

    • +3

      1.33kg

      Brightness could be either 400 cd/m2, 72% sRGB or 220 cd/m2, 45% sRGB

      • +2

Quite a gulf between those two options. It would be nice to get the 400 cd/m2 one but I suspect if that was what was in these refurbs then they'd list it in the spec.

  • What would you guys say about this in comparison to $799 ex-demo LENOVO IDEAPAD 3, 15.6" FHD 1080. 6 CORE CPU, 512GB SSD. BACKLIT, WIN 10/11 PRO on ebay. Thanks.

    • +1

That's not far off the price of a new Ideapad 3 - at that point I'd just buy new.

    • +1

Idepad range is consumer so cheap build materials and components aren't rated as highly like the elitebook business laptop components are.

  • highlight offer is definitely the best value

cpu too weak on the other options - for a casual computing machine they just scrape by today, wont for long though

  • +1

What exactly has been refurbished in those?

    • +2

I get the feeling it's just another way of saying "2nd hand".

  • +1

These are decent machines. Used these as daily drivers while working in a few financial firms. They handle Office and Browsers apps fine. Upping the RAM to 16 GB would be the main upgrade if anything. Battery should be in the 1-3 hour range by now but if usually used plugged in not really an issue. As mentioned earlier just fine for travel computer and can handle the streaming services without a hiccup (Netflix, etc.).

Even with gaming it'll be 1080p and games in the 2015-2017 year or earlier.

If newbie to upgrading the main thing is to just take your time and watch a video on YouTube about dismantling. Take note of unplugged cables and how they're placed. RAM upgrade should be fairly easy. As it is 8th Gen Intel it does officially support and upgrade to Windows 11 and it should be free based on the already installed Win10.

  • Can these take a sim card for 4G connectivity?

  • How do these modern Elitebook hold up. Personally, I never had any good luck with HP with reliability. Moreover, I always found getting drivers for HP are a pain compared to a Lenovo or Dell.

  • I'm using one of these as a company laptop, and for relatively simple tasks (spreadsheets, email, looking at sales reports and delivering presentations) it's a fantastic machine. Battery still lasts me 7 hours or so, it's lightweight, the screen is nice and it's plenty fast enough. Highly recommend.

  • This or lenovo T480s ?

    • T480s

      • Can you elaborate as to why?

      • +1

Good luck with your T480s left hinge snapping away from the display rear cover, both might snap if you're lucky. I used to repair these laptops in Brisbane City about 2 years ago. I probably did 100 or more in about 12 months for hinges issues on that model. It's a shame apart from the hinge issue it is a great laptop.

        • My Lenovo X1 Yoga actually did the exact thing you described and now I'm looking for a refurb. Guess Lenovo has this issue across their models. Glad I found your comment.

    • is that on deal as well?

  • HP Elite or DELL LATITUDE 7490, i5 8350U, 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM?

  • +1

Or this Dell option. Seems worth the extra $70?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/284748080509

    • The Dell has a SATA SSD while this has an NVMe SSD, which is way faster.

Can’t comment on anything else (materials, durability, keyboard, display, etc)

But it would be an interesting comparison between elitebooks, latitudes, and thinkpads rocking same specs.

  • OP, can you post info in regards to screen brightness - specs? I would like confirmation of brightness specs before following through with a purchase. Thanks

  • I was seconds away from buying before realising this was out of stock. I can see a bunch of laptops at a similar price range, but am far too useless to understand all the connotations of different brands, memory types, processors etc.

Can anyone recommend a laptop with similar or better specs for a similar price from here - https://www.ebay.com.au/str/smgaus ? It would be primarily be used for browsing, word processing, typical office stuff and if it can be decent enough to play the occasional game even better.

    • +1

If I had to buy one I would go for this one:
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/165514959442?hash=item268975da52…

But it's around $100 more than these ones.
On the plus side it does have 16GB RAM and a NVMe SSD.

      • Thank you so much for taking the time to reply - I've taken the plunge and bought this bad boy.

        • Can you share about the laptop performance and how good the quality is?
