  • This one-volume hardback edition contains the complete text, fully corrected and reset,

what had to be corrected? i am not familiar with the books, was there something wrong with the text?

    • +51

It's a lot shorter now, the eagles just fly the fellowship to mordor

      • +10

Tolkien explained why this wasn't possible: https://youtu.be/1-Uz0LMbWpI

        • +1

          That's such a troll

        • +6

There were actually some pretty good explanations on why they didn’t just fly to Mordor.
          1. Eagles are higher beings (like Gandalf), not a taxi service
          2. The eagles feared the influence and temptation of the one ring
          3. The range of eagles isn’t great especially when carrying people. They couldn’t fly from Rivendell to Mordor in a single trip.
          4. Sauron would have seen the Eagles flying to Mordor and draw his full attention to them. He would have been able to prepare by guarding the entrance to mount Doom and he has an “airforce” of sorts with the Fell Beasts that the Nazgûl ride.

Perhaps it could/should have been discussed at the council of Elrond but it wasn’t so maybe reason 5 is that nobody thought of it

@FireRunner: The funny thing is that Tolkien never (as far as I'm aware) bothered to make these points or any other logical excuses, which would have consequently stopped further pestering inquiries. He definitely could have thought of many reasons why it wasn't possible but instead simply told people to just shut up.

He was probably offended by people questioning his story, like an artist offended by someone asking why they didn't use red instead of blue (it is what it is, so shut up!).

@Berick: The video you linked isn’t actually Tolkien’s response. It’s hilarious and a good impersonation though

According to this wiki, he did explain the need for stealth and he wanted to be careful about using them as a plot device

              • +1

@FireRunner: Thanks for this info! I didn't know he actually addressed the issue…

          • @FireRunner: Maybe 4. is right but the rest not so
            1. Didn't they taxi frodo anyway
            2. Temptation of the one ring? It won't fit on their claw
            3. That's what overnight rests are for

            • @funnysht:

              1. They didn’t really “taxi” Frodo, more like rescue him. Point is more like they can’t just call on the eagles and expect to be helped
              2. The ring could resize it itself to the bearer. Not sure if that extended to giant Eagle claws or if the eagles could wield it another way so fair point
              3. I guess this one isn’t a reason in its own. Point is it’s a far bigger effort than what some assume.

        Edited version.
A little guy goes to a lot of effort to get rid of some stolen jewellery.

        • A little guy finds much more than just a ring- he finds someone to give it to ;)

and they call it a meme, a meme!

          • @Hobnail: The number of Meme’s that came out of LOTR was enormous.

      • +2

No, they included Bully Maguire who just ends up putting dirt into the eye of Sauron causing the tower to collapse and all the orcs dissipate in fear.

As for the Ring, he missed the part where it's his problem as long as Middle Earth is saved.

      • Thats only because it tested better with fans than Tom Bombadil just keeping it; since you know, he's eternal, and it's powerless over/to him.

    • +2

It’s mostly typesetting and layout, with some minor punctuation and typo/name corrections.

    • No Qantas frequent flyer points. Simple as that.

Okay this actually looks great, assuming the video below is of the same book, but the one on Amazon is the newer edition with some corrections, as OP mentioned, of some mistakes that were in the 2021 edition.

It does look very nice, precious.

    • +7

The book in this bargain post is the white covered edition seen here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSJUiw8wf0U

      • Thank you for the correction, I can't edit to correct the original comment.

    • Nope its NOT that version

  • +7

is this the edition where all the elves and dwarves are black?

    • +10

No, that’s the colour corrected edition.

      • The easterlings are swarthy again.

    • I don’t know about that but I see the troll has turned up.

    any torrent link, guys ?

    • +7

      You wouldn't download a book

I would recommend the Silmarillion. The creation of the world is beautifully handled.

    • I agree, The Silmarillion is great, as is LotR. Just re-reading (well actually listening to Andy Serkis' audiobook) LotR again and the climax in the last book is just incredible, after an incredible build up over many pages. His world is unparalleled.

My sister studied this in HSC so I read this in my mid teens. It is a book I reread, regularly, but it does get bogged down in, various, parts. I tend to skip the Tom Bombadil bits, now days. Ultimately I find it a, very, sad book. Frodo never recovers from his experiences, he is in constant pain and he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. It just has a touch of the “great and good” using him. FFS they didn’t even keep a decent eye on the Shire. It is worth reading about Tolkien’s service in WW1.

Actually I’m more into Discworld now. If you haven’t got into Pratchett you have a treat ahead of you.

Got this on the way after having a weird desire to read the books again and I wanted a nicer edition. Can't way to lay my hands on it.

  • Thanks for his, that is my Father's Day present (for me) sorted.

  • Does this book contain the whole trilogy or just the Fellowship?

    • +4

      It contains the whole trilogy.

  • +1

The book already arrived today. Looks amazing! Thanks for the tip off :)
