Prices slowly dropping for this part. Still not amazing value but it's a better proposition as an upgrade if you're already on the AM4 platform.

Edit: has been $629 previously https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/705934

An amazing CPU - noticed substantial 1% low increases after switching my 5900x. The cache works wonders.

I went to this CPU from 2700x, although I'm gaming on 38" Ultrawide at QHD+ resolution, I definitely noticed improvement in overall average and 1% low frame rates. To top it off, I dropped it into a cheapo B450 board haha.

      • Did your motherboard handle this fine? I want to upgrade but I got a MSI X570 gaming edge and people saying it’ll blow the VRM off.. lol

Edit: temps wise. I’m aware of compatibility. Worried about VRMs lol

'People' without any understanding of CPU platforms?

The CPU runs hot because 8 chiplets are located adjacent to each other - a hot spot. It has nothing to do with high power consumption.

It's an 8 core 7nm CPU, you could run it fine on any board with more than 4 phases

          • @greatlamp: Nice explanation! Cheers.

Considering you’re so knowledgeable, would my MB above be fine? I think it has either 4 or 8 phases…. Not super tech minded and google isn’t answering it.

Also cool to know 5800x3D is faster on gaming than 5900x (and hopefully not that much slower in productivity!)

            • @Bisah1342: It'll run fine on that motherboard, likely with cooler VRM temps than even the 5800X since the boost clocks are lower. 5800X3D is quite a bit slower in productivity than the 5900X, slower than the 5800X as well actually.

            • @Bisah1342: Well of course its going to be significantly slower in productivity, it's got 4 less cores.

The x570 gaming edge is one of the worst x570 boards on the market - MSI discontinued several of their x570 boards after it game them such a bad reputation and released much better replacements

It will throttle with a 12 core CPU, but an 8 core CPU will be fine

        • I read about potential issues relating to motherboard VRM, but I haven't noticed any problems. There was one instance a week ago where I was getting random force quits out of games, but I think that was mainly due to PC being up for days at time, mining crypto, with no restarts.

          • @m0usju1c3: Why are you still mining? Is it still profitable?

@John Doh: Only just, thanks to solar. Although Eth and Btc have increased in value recently.

The 5800X3D is an 8 core CPU that can't be overclocked. It'd work just fine on a $20 b350 mobo with no VRM heatsinks.

    • I'm getting 180fps 1% lows and 360fps average on Dota at 1440p max settings (6700XT).

For comparison, my absolute highest was 180fps on a 5600X with the same GPU. Astonishing performance from this chip!

Should I be waiting for next gen ryzen at this stage?

    • +1

depends what you've got and what you want. 5600's are going for fantastic prices atm and I'd say that's more than enough for most people.

    • +1

Depends what you have right now and what you’re willing to spend
Next gen Ryzen uses new AM5 socket and DDR5 RAM. MOBO and DDR5 will be quite pricey but likely you’ll have good options for future upgrade. Getting a current Gen Ryzen will have no future upgrade options but will be much cheaper
If you already have an AM4 mobo then it might be better to splurge on the 5800X3D which is an absolute beast in games

    • +1

Wait and see how next gen performs and if you are ok with price increase, this would only have become cheaper by then.

    • +2

Yep, at the very least the 5800X3D will get some steep price cuts once it loses the gaming performance crown. Right now AMD are making extreme margins on this thing.

  • Currently using a laptop with 5800, 3050ti and 16gb ram. Happy to wait a couple months, but only getting 60fps at 1440p in apex legends

  • +1

It's a great cpu…. shame it can't be OC'd from what i've read in forums. Maybe the next batch might be enabled.
Imo, this is solely a gaming cpu… not for production uses

    • It can't OC because it'll overheat and kill the 3D V-cache.

  • Great upgrade from the r5 2600. I got it for $650 at launch so it hasn't really come down in price…and don't expect it to until AM5 is released. Even so, it would be worth it until DDR5 matures. Recommended if you're a gamer on AM4 with a 1000 or 2000 series chip…maybe even 3000 series?

  • +1

Down a couple more dollars @ $646.94 as of 29/7

  • Just got a 5600… next year if the price for this comes down would it be worth the upgrade?

    • Depends on GPU and resolution but the 5600 should last you a while
