Any recommendations for a free SIM to port to, to enable a "recharge" while porting back in?

    • +7

If your phone is esim capable.
GoMO — 1month free (VOLTE and VoWifi) OPTUS
Felix — 1 month free with some code FELIX or sth ( No VOLTE or VOWifi) but unlimited data

  • Does anyone know of an app that lets you monitor what's using data? I seem to go through so much and dunno what's running in the background

    • +3

The official Boost Mobile app lets you do this. Just connect your accounts to it and it'll display data usage and time left in your 365 days.

    • +2

If you're on Android the monitoring is built-in

      • +1

How do you do yearly monitoring in Android?

    • +1

in your phone settings you can set how much data limit you allow to consume use which may help also

    • +1

Boost app is the best way to track usage on sim. If you need more detailed breakdown use system settings on iOS (settings -> mobile -> scroll down) or monitoring on android. You can reset the usage if you want to keep track from certain period.

Can confirm data use in boost app.

Just wondering does unused data rollover on next recharge?

      • No, it expires at 12 months regardless of recharge. But if you didn't use it in the last 12 months you probably won't need it in the next 12.

  • Are there recharge discounts or only new sim discounts?
I understand you can port out and port back in but more wondering if you can ever get a discount on a recharge voucher?

    • this has been asked a hundred times already the ANSWER is, it can be used as a recharge as well!

      • But from my understanding its better to port out and port in because you get those bonus data too
I always get some $10 woolies sim card with 100% cashback in hand for port-out and in purpose

        • The bonus data can be had by simply using it as a recharge sim BUT by all means, port out/in if you prefer.

      • Sorry to ask, but I've never done this before. Currently with Boost mobile (I switched over two years ago, was with Telstra before that) and have just gotten the $150 recharge the past two years (I was still able to get it for a similar price last year through the Boost app I think it was).

If I buy this, how do I go about using it?

Also, is there a time limit for having to use it? My current recharge expires in Oct.

Edit : Just saw it needs to be activated by Sept. , so not sure if I can use it if my current recharge expires mid Oct.

  • It's a great value especially if you use international calls once in a while.

  • Currently with Optus. Simple enough to buy this and port in?

    • +1

I think it would be simple. I just ported to Boost for the first time, got a message saying it may take up to one business day. Less than 3 mins later, it was active. Very impressed so far

"(however, some people have claimed that they can contact Boost support to assist in direct porting without having to jump through another provider's sim)"

Just a warning that this is not easy as people make it out to be. I tried to talk to 2 people for son's phone and both refused to help.

  • They activate the new sim and new phone number, then disconnect your existing phone number (yes that sounds scary) then once disconnected they transfer your existing disconnected number to the new sim, and you put the new sim in your phone that should now contain your existing phone number.

I hope nothing ever goes wrong

    • Did this with previous sim and porting failed leaving both sims disconnected. They asked to purchase new sim from shop and sorted it out

  • out of stock atm, is there more stock coming ? ?

    • +1

      $142.20 from auditech_online

    • Just click the sellers other items, they have more listings of the same product, same discount as per OP’s post.

  • How long do you need wait before porting back in to be considered as new customer??

  • Unusual question. Can I use this as purely recharge?

  • This deal seems to have many more positive responses and upvotes compared to the Woolworths 365 day 140ish GB Sims that come with a once a month 10% off Woolies shop.

    Can anyone tell me why?
Is Boost that much superior in stability/data speeds etc or something?

    • Boost uses the full Telstra network, Woolworths uses 'parts of'.

  • my similar Boost is expiring in a couple weeks - I just checked on My Boost Mobile app (not the old Boost app) and it said I had used less than 20GB of the supposed 80GB from last year - less than 25% of what I paid for

becoz I haven't travelled this year (COVID, floods, what else) and have been mostly on home wifi (I'm retired)

when I drive I like to use HERE Maps offline which does not burn data like Google Maps

so yeah it could look like false economy - but last year when I compared, Boost was still OK value at like $200/12=$17 per month.

and from my readings, being the top Telstra network, the best choice for travelling to remote locations like Woop Woop or Grong Grong

    • Yes. If you never leave large cities your coverage will be the same as Aldi, Woolies etc. This is due to some law which I've mostly forgotten about, something to do with Telstra must provide coverage on it's wholesale network in areas where competition have coverage, but being the largest network in Australia, outside of cities, there will be many rural locations where Telstra is the only tower, this means they only need to provide coverage to Telstra/Boost, and not Telstra wholesale customers like Aldi, Woolies.

Someone correct me if I have that wrong

  • Not OOS; just repriced: $169. Better deals elsewhere.
