Bought the Sydney EB for so many years with no dramas until year of first lockdown. Sadly so many places disappeared and then we’d turn up to others who wouldn’t accept a current voucher. Suddenly wondered how many would not take them etc.

    How is it now?

    • +3

You can download the app to view what's available even without an account.

    • +7

      How is it now?

Pretty crap… Probably 25% of the number of places it had a few years back.

App has really gone downhill too… Very hard to search for places and there is no list view, only a crappy, slow map view.
I think they won't show you in list form as you will easily see how few places there are.

      • +1

        Ditto this

Silly me bought it, and found there was almost nothing left. I ended up getting given a refund.

It's no surprise that they're having to offer such crazy discounts, there is almost no value to it anymore

  • +3

Similar experience in Brisbane to be honest. A lot of places had no idea how to put the deals into their systems so would/could not accept. Found it wasn't worth it, for our family at least sadly.

    • +2

The only time I had this issue was at a subway inside an IGA, the sandwich was already made so I stood my ground though….

Most restaurants have a wide range of discount buttons available including staff discount, food issue etc, so I'm surprised you are getting "a lot" of places that didn't know.

      • Had issues with subways also.

But over the years this entertainment guide had eroded into bad service, bad app, and bad variety of restaurants, etc

        • +2

          eroded into bad service

Many emails for support go unanswered…

          • @jv: Or you get a default response saying we are a charity and can't do nothing about it 🤡

            • -1

              @hypnOtixx: They’re a business, not a charity

              • -1

                @jv: And you’re a sh%t stirrer and not a help

    • I tried to use at a Maccas in a food court and they had no idea how to apply the code.

      Would not recommend this anymore.

  • +2

Are these still genuinely relevant? Honest question. With all the coupon/discount sites around are these still worth anything?

Used to get these every year but then was finding the value waning slowly over the years so wonder whether it's improved again or not.

    • +4

Yeah, I had a membership pre covid but the deals seem worse now and I don't think you'd be missing out on anything with Groupon Liven Eatclub etc available. Not worth the $70 for me

      • +4

I think if you live in an area that doesn’t have any Yums, Liven, Eatclub etc it can be worth it (based on my own experience), but I probably wouldn’t use it if I lived in a major city.

      • +5

Looking at Liven, the rewards are way lower and there's barely anything available.

Groupon is a bad deal in my opinion, you have to prebuy vouchers with a preset menu. Its often not a good deal because the restaurant will pick a profitable selection of food, there are often terms and conditions, the vouchers expire, the booking system is often rigged so a normal paying customer has priority, and often they just don't book certain days if you have a groupon.

EatClub is great if you have something you want when you actually want it. The issue is that restaurants will activate and deactivate it whenever it suits them so you'll often only get a discount during offpeak times and it still locks you into going to that restaurant. The biggest issue with EatClub is its very difficult to arrange with friends and if a friend has already booked… you can't use the discount anymore.

        • +2

Guess it depends where you live - Liven in Melb/Sydney I've found to be great with a large selection, some low cashback rates but some good ones (and the Foodollars deals are normally excellent), and never been rejected from using

          EatClub agree
Groupon does vary, some hits & misses

Can also add to the list:
          - TheFork
          - Hey You
          - Cudo/Scoopon (same as Groupon)
          - Various dicounted gift cards on Ozb (e.g. Good food/Gourmet Traveller/Ultimate Eats)

          • @Legsweeping: Don't forget Hungry Panda, Fantuan and Memberbuy!

          • @Legsweeping: Entertainment book is generally 25-50%, I'm in Brisbane and I don't see any in this range for Liven. I'm not counting those with minimum spends.

          • @Legsweeping: I'm in Melbourne and I find Liven to have bad discounts and there's also nothing very close to me.

        • Great description!

        • +1

The issue is that restaurants will activate and deactivate it whenever it suits them

That's not an issue, that's the whole point of the app…

          • @jv: It is… but it's being compared to here, where that isn't an issue. There are virtually no time restrictions with these vouchers.

            • @odysseus: There are no time limits on my favourite EatClub ones either.
They are always available, but the discount amount usually fluctuates between 10% and 40%.
The single EB voucher for the same restaurant is 25% off.

        • -1

          Liven is great in Melbourne.
Few joints i go to regularly on their.
Lots of bubble tea if you like that too.
          Also getting upsizes 20+20 etc.

    • +2

There aren't really alternatives though are there? There has been a lot removed but its still better then the others.

Entertainment book works 24/7 and doesn't require bookings.

EatClub restuarants only activate when they want more customers and all the decent places will generally be offpeak days and times.

If you know of anything like Entertainment book that would be great to know.

      • Entertainment book works 24/7 and doesn't require bookings.

It does for the accommodation bookings.

They are probably the only thing worth getting it for.

        • +2

          I wouldn't say thats correct.

Entertainment book does not make you book your voucher, you use the voucher when you make a normal booking. Thats why entertainment book is great compared to everything else.

I'm not sure why you read my post to imply that you could just turn up to a hotel room… but then I now realise who I'm talking to.

          • @samfisher5986:

Entertainment book does not make you book your voucher

There are no vouchers, you book direct through their booking site, and the rates are usually the cheapest you will find.

          • @samfisher5986: Yes.
            The troll.

  • +1

This book is still very good in Adelaide, I always save the money it costs to get the book in the first month. But they keep removing some of the good ones, Subway is gone now and some of my favourite restaurants. Still worth the price though

    • +1

Subway was the best thing imo as we always use them. Thanks for highlighting thats it’s been taken off. Otherwise, I would have bought this as mine expired in May!

      • +1

        Subway is now on Eatclub

  • Book is pretty good all rounder. Makes Money back after 2-3 uses in restaurants. But the offer a few months back was better with $40 gift Card.

  • +2

I use it for access to discounted gift cards mainly and some fast food. I know there are other ways to get those as well though, but I find it pretty easy through the entertainment app.

  • +2

With apps like Thefork and Earclub I do think the need to purchase the EB anymore.

    • +1

      With apps like Thefork

How do I Get Thefork out of here ???

      and Earclub

      I hear that's pretty good…

  • +1

I found I paid it off quickly using just coffee vouchers. Odd fast food vouchers helped too. However they seemed to drop off notably in recent times. Can't say I'd bother anymore.

    • Odd fast food vouchers helped too.

What do you mean? Something like this?

  • +1

Back in the days, this together with Shop Small used to cut great deals

  • Can someone from Perth give me some feedback on whether this is worthwhile please?

    • +2

Its not worth taking opinions because one or two vouchers can often pay for your entire book. For example just recently I saved $65.

Somebody that only eats at mcdonalds and never does activities will say its not worth it.

Look at the vouchers and see if there's something you normally do or eat that has a voucher.

    • +2

You can download the app and select ‘continue as guest’ and you can see a list of all the places around you before signing up

  • I used to get a lot out of these but even this deal is not a no-brainer to me anymore sadly.

They can be good if you are travelling actually e.g. if you are heading to the gold coast or NZ for a couple of weeks you'd probably save your money back on those locations

  • Works pretty well for us in Canberra. We still manage to save way more than the value of the book so just got another year.

  • only voucher books thats worth it, good app after the recent updates with a map feature to see what's around.

  • I renewed a month or two back with the BigW voucher deal. Have already used it at 3 restaurants so already made my money back. It has definitely gone downhill in terms of participating restaurants but still a good deal if you like eating out.

  • I often use EB in conjunction with the Fork offers.

  • I’m currently a member of the Entertainment Book already.

Have received an sms stating this same deal.

Any idea if that can be tagged onto an existing membership or just new memberships only.

  • +1

Interesting, seems like they've now introduced a 3 month membership that's $30 regular price, or only $25 on the partner programs, which is pretty handy if you only want to use it for a few particular things

    • +1

Or visiting a particular city that you don't normally reside in

    • btw your username and avatar are pretty funny - is there a story behind it?

      • +1

Totally. I'm going to buy a Melbourne edition for a short trip in October and can already think of at least $100 worth of discount i'm going to use, if not more.

Haha no real background on my username, i love chicken and I was just trying to think of a username. The drawing is by artist Brian Cook whose trademark is drawing butts on things.

        • +1

Don't forget to download Liven, Hungry Panda, Fantuan and Memberbuy all of which have plenty of deals.

          • +1

            @inasero: e.g. Pelicana Fried Chicken - $90 worth of food for $75
