Do You Boycott Companies over Unethical or Otherwise 'dodgy' Behaviour? if So - Which Ones?

I was browsing around for a neck gaiter today and found some at decathlon. I then had to think back to a Convo I had with my dad about the company. He said he won't shop there anymore since they've not pulled out of Russia. He's got a point here I feel.

I just wondered where other consumers draw the line? I've stopped buying certain chocolate bars since production moved to China - I avoid food products from there. Nestle had a pretty bad rep, too.

What's important to you guys when hunting for bargains?

Harvey Norman. It will be a glorious day to see Gerry fall on his sword

  • Uber/ubereats, pay drivers peanuts and ever since they introduced service fees… yeh nah. Harvey Norman I find they usually try and hard sell you things especially their warranty which is pointless, also Gerry seems like a real c@#$ so no thanks.

My mother in law, does that count?

  • I will go out of my way to avoid any company that has someone drive like crap in a company car, especially if they are speeding.

    • A cleaning company employee threw their cigarette butt out the window this morning. They just made the list!

Jaycar for the blatant rip off of a product they used to stock and replaced with their own copy. Never again will I spend money in your stores.

    Interesting video.

    • For how many years have you been boycotting them?

    • +1

Doesn’t amazon basics do the same thing?

    • +1

Thanks for sharing, have a worse opinion of Jaycar now

  • Kogan mobile - terrible support
Optus mobile - terrible mobile coverage
Food delivery- seriously, can’t get this concept. People can’t be this lazy not to pickup food from a shop only couple of hundreds meters.

    • tbh with the food delivery, it's not always a few hundred meters especially for those of us in the burbs.

Some of the restaraunts I order from are 10 minutes either direction by car, not to mention the waiting time. When I'm WFH that's 30 minutes saved for free.

    • Food delivery - Handy for people with children who don’t want to get them organised for a walk or drive but can’t leave them at home.

    • might want to rethink why you chose to label people who use food delivery as lazy.

a lot of elderly and disabled people use these before uber eats is a thing.

  • Everyone on OzB loves boycotting a company but they conveniently forget if there’s a bargain.

    • i don't. i have relatively long memories on whom/when/what i choose to boycott. there are almost always a replacement.

the only thing i can't really boycott is things like the ATO lol, like a good chunk our tax money went to that father/son pair.

can't say much on behalf of others.

McDonald's for various unethical behaviour and all round crap food
Apple for Hobbling devices after 2 years and other unethical behaviour.
Nandos, Pie Hole, Michelle's Patisseries for treating franchisees like crap (yes, I know this can hurt the franchisee but I don't want to contribute to making the companies bigger)
Amazon if I can avoid it
Coles and Woolworths for price gouging.
Dyson for making rubbish products that die just outside of warranty.

Every company that ia woke or bowed to the woke mob (it is getting very difficult to buy things). Smiths most recently for having gays and transsexuals in their advertisements. Bonds are a neverending dissapointment. Anything with Muslims.

    • +2

This was not a "racists please come out of your closet" thread.

      • Islam, gay, and transsexual are not races genius

        • That's quite a common excuse from racists. Reality is muslims tend to be "other races" so it's quite easy for someone like you to be racist against multiple races. I bet you get all offended by halal food that has always been halal and is not just now labelled as such.

          • +3

@MikeKulls: So you're telling me that you can't differentiate between being a muslim and being middle eastern? That's pretty racist Mike.

    • Did you boycott this Samsung phone yet? If not, why not?

      • -1

Now that I have seen it, I will look for other options in future. It's a great phone so that's a bummer. Thanks for letting me know!

        • You’re welcome.

          Now how about Cloudflare.

They host all sorts of services for all sorts of companies. Like Ozbargain

Don’t let the door hit you on the way out lmao

            @2024: Cool story bro

@meowbert: Yeah oops ur “boycott” is full of bs hey

How do you feel, knowing that this page being transmitted to you is in binary, but the staff working at Cloudflare might not be?

Atleast we’ve answered ops question for you:

What's important to you guys when hunting for bargains?

              obviously nothing

              Everything else?
              Flexing bigoted views

              • @2024: Look, I'll be real with you ok?

                ….

The reason why people don't want to talk to you on the internet is because you're not very interesting.

                • -1

                  @meowbert:

Look, I'll be real with you ok?

Finally. Do you actually boycott those other companies or is it just another one of your fantasies involving the homosexuals?

                  • @2024: Stop projecting your fantasies on me, the attention seeking is getting a bit sad.

                    • +1

@meowbert: It’s OK Bert, you can boycott when it suits you. When it’s convenient or fashionable.

You bow to the woke mob (and companies) to get what you want. That new phone… that website… where does it end? Does this cause some kind of internal turmoil? How do you reconcile that?

And commenting in a collapsed thread that no one will see because of the downvotes on your post isn’t attention seeking. It’s me calling you out on your BS, half a**, “when it suits you” boycott

                      • @2024: Hahaha!!!!!! You picture yourself as some kind of master psychologist, tugging at my inconsistencies, placing doubt where there was none before, calling out my "BS". Genuinely made me laugh out loud Mr 200 IQ, thank you.

                        • @meowbert: It’s hilarious isn’t it. Behind the safety of your keyboard you’re all anti gay, anti woke, anti Muslim etc. Unfortunately, your bank account, browsing habits, and god knows what else tell a different story. Lmao

Bend over and feel the woke, gay agenda. On one hand you say you hate it. Yet your other hand is giving that agenda a wristie with your credit card and scroll wheel. Oh the irony.

  • What does Russia have to do with boycotting a company?

    • +1

      It’s the current thing

    • Because Russia invaded Ukraine and one method of fighting back without military escalation is by trying to turn the population against the leader.

If international companies stop operating in Russia and stop selling their goods their, the people won't have access to them. If that upsets the people enough, they may choose to push for change within their country.

Obviously it's a lot more complicated, but that's the basic premise. So companies that haven't withdrawn from Russia could be seen to be prioritising their own profits and revenues over taking a stance against Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

      • +1

So by that logic I should be boycotting American products too because they invaded Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and others?

        • You do you.

I'm not asking anyone to do anything, I'm answering your question.

What does Russia have to do with boycotting a company?

  • +2

    Shein. Ultrapolluter.

  • +2

Volkswagen.Such a 3rd rate company. So that includes Audi and Skoda too.

  • i feel like, in the end, after their 15 minutes of fame after something dodgy happens, it doesnt matter if you boycot them or not

eg: youfoods: a few years back the owners posted a video of themselves making fun of asian people in a restaurant. there was a big backlash, but now, most people have forgotten and the company is doing fine

same for volkswagen, going as strong as ever

  • +4

No I try to dodge the woke companies,

    • +1

      Yes!

    • +1

So you do the opposite of the OP's question - look for companies that do unethical things to support them?

      • I avoid woke companies which allege they are "ethical" assuming there is a universally accepted version of ethics.

    Weyland-Yutani

    Harvey Norman.

Domino's Pizza recently for the delivery surcharge they add to every order - even vouchers that already have delivery prices baked in. I mean, up the advertised price by all means but sneaking it in at the subtotal is BS to me.

    Apple

Honda for making shit quality cars now, they rattle, scratch easily and wears off in few years quiet easily compared to other Japanese or Korean brands.

    • +2

You've got to get the made in Japan ones. I got a 2000 CRV and the paints (profanity), but it will make 500,000kms (at 380,000 right now with 0 mechanical issues)

    • +2

      go JDM or go home.

that's what i understood while 'playing' with cars when younger.

  • +3

Harvey Norman. Because of so many reasons.
Sanitarium. Paying no income tax due to being owned by a religious organisation while their competitors pay tax. They should just play by the same rules as other businesses.

LG due to personal experience. Nexus 5X phone had the bootloop of death due to well known hardware failure/flaw and not far outside what they would accept as their warranty period. I understand the need for time limits on warranties but maybe not when you make something so flawed.

    • +1

The Nexus 5 back was supposedly tensioned so much that it was basically waiting for any impact to explode.

  • +3

Sodastream, because why would you use a company that contributes to an economy that occupies someone elses land indefinitely, displaces and kills the local population, bulldozes their houses and the people defending them, and plants their own peasants in secure compounds while arming them and sanctioning their abuse of the existing locals, while also targeting and killing journalists reporting on these crimes, when you can just buy Australian and get SodaKing

  • If it's associated the Harvey Norman. Doesn't matter the price. It's a no.

  • Grill'd & Jaycar

    • Why grill'd?

      • +1

From a recent news report: "Grill'd received an eye-watering $16.6 million from taxpayers after signing up thousands of its workers to a government apprenticeship incentives program. The burger food chain can pocket up to $28,000 per trainee through the wage subsidy scheme while also paying that worker less than someone not on the traineeship."

      • As per u/Rockets84 Grill'd abuses the traineeship program to underpay workers. They make it near impossible to get your certs and achieve a pay increase.

That an management are just scum, lots of dodge things happen at almost every store. I worked there for a few months between jobs and it was woeful.

  • +1

Wish this thread was more boycotting x but supporting y instead so can see have a reference point for something better..

    • i support the local ugg shop, which is a hairy thing to navigate because of so much similiar branding.

also recently local nut places. it's hard to have a definite list because we need to change our stance as we get new information.

there are definitely local places i 'blacklisted' and rather buy from elsewhere even when it's pricier and takes longer to arrive.

and because of that, i feel that it's a very subjective decision, not many can afford/make this sort of decisions.

Have head allegations of them not paying for any design work they ask people do to after using the material.

  • I wont be back to Good Games in Brisbane City. Went in to sell a few MTG cards, was told they offer 40% of the value on Card Kingdom or 50% store credit. Yeah no worries, count up the value. They checked Card Kingdom in USD and then quoted me the number they added up in AUD. I didn't even bother saying anything, if you're going to try and rip newcomers off by not converting USD to AUD I'm not remotely interested in supporting your business. It was just so blatant I feel that they must do it all the time.

Cutting back on buying American branded products. The empire of lies and oppresion of the weak and illegal invasions an coups.

America needs to be held accountable for war crimes in Iraq, Syria and Yemen and the list goes on and on.

  • Coca Cola for about 2 years, they're pretty evil (a quick google will explain) but I've given up since they're in most restaurants/fast food chains.
Pepsi isn't much better as a corporate entity, but I need my softdrink fix, if I'm buying for home I'll generally get something from their line. Hooray lesser of 2 evils! (maybe).

It's worth looking into the lobbying of these 2, and how for years you had either a coke or a pepsi elected US president.

  • +1

Bmw was nazi supporter once, now they have lgbt logos. Lol.

Capitalism has no values nor moral. So Don't bother boycotting unless you will live on your own in the middle of nowhere.

    • Fun fact - Mitsubishi literally got nuked

  • nestle, JBS meats, harvey norman

  • I won't buy Activision Blizzard games until I have reason to believe they've dealt with their shitty sexist internal culture.

And I won't buy a game published by the Activision side of that corporation again, because they perma-banned me from CoD:MW when I logged into the game after upgrading my PC, then offered no explanation or evidence when I appealed - just closed the case. This locked me out of Warzone, MW multiplayer AND the single player MW campaign which I'd paid money for and can no longer launch at all. While I only played CoD occasionally and wasn't all that invested in the game, the fact their shitty anti-cheat didn't work and resulted in a massive special ban-wave that caught me with zero recourse meant I'm not giving them another cent.

    • Their games are also just Trash lately.

  • Squarespace for always showing up in Youtube videos.

  • No.

  • +1

Any company that changes their branding or products due to political correctness.. I won't list any because of 'hurt feelings'

  • I always wonder if the decision to boycott companies is based on media scrutiny while not actually understanding whether the competition does the same thing.
