Do You Boycott Companies over Unethical or Otherwise 'dodgy' Behaviour? if So - Which Ones?

I was browsing around for a neck gaiter today and found some at decathlon. I then had to think back to a Convo I had with my dad about the company. He said he won't shop there anymore since they've not pulled out of Russia. He's got a point here I feel.

I just wondered where other consumers draw the line? I've stopped buying certain chocolate bars since production moved to China - I avoid food products from there. Nestle had a pretty bad rep, too.

What's important to you guys when hunting for bargains?

    • You know most retail companies do this right…?

    I avoid Amazon

    • +12

      Same.

Sometimes it means I cough up a couple bucks more but I honestly don't mind, their behaviour on labour rights and conditions, on stealing IP, on a bunch of other stuff is terrible

      • Yep, I'm of the same opinion.

      • those labour rights and conditions are murican problems so who gives a shit

    • +15

I avoid Amazon too, that's why I'm only shopping at amazon.com.au, different!!

    • +2

      Yep. Bezos can gtfo

      • He easily can gfh

    • +1

Yeah same here. They are the worst when it comes to stomping out small businesses and exploiting the working class, whilst simultaneously destroying the environment with rubbish products that’ll end up in landfill in a few weeks…

    youfoodz!

    • Hear hear

    • +2

FWIW Youfoodz was acquired by Hellofresh but not sure what the situation is with regards to management.

      • +1

Giles is still on the board, but he is no longer the CEO of Youfoodz post Hellofresh acquisition.

I don't think you need to boycott Youfoodz anymore as the racist prick has already made his profit selling it, he's not going to get any significant bonuses just for his seat on the board.

Given how poorly he mismanaged the expansion, I doubt Hellofresh is very interested in his input or retention.

    i avoid volkswagen,
replaced 90% of nestle-branded products with something else, still figuring out which are affiliated as it changes all the time.
i avoid an entire franchise of a motor shop accessories franchise as I got scammed by one and the HQ washed their hands when the issue was brought to them.

avoid LG and Samsung whitegoods and mobile phones.

certain job agencies, that i totally write off/block

i boycotted coles for about 8 years

  • +41

    Rolls Royce. Bell helicopters.
    Every super yacht maker.

    • Ah join the club mate.

I only boycott the things I can't afford (until I can afford it).

    McDonalds Drive thru…

    Getting orders wrong since 1987

    • to be fair, if you complain to mcdonalds and are able to prove that you went there at the time you said (receipt or bank transaction) they are pretty good about making it right. i complained once after i got cheese when i had ordered it without and all they asked for proof was that i went there at all, so i showed them the transaction ID and they sent me a $10 coupon, almost double the cost of the burger.

      • +2

to be fair I shouldnt have to… nor have to prove it

        • why shouldn't you have to prove it? if they didn't require proof, anyone could just send an email, call them or rock up and say that they got the wrong order.

people make mistakes, it's always going to happen, as long as they do the right thing and rectify or give compensation, it's fine.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: why shouldn't you have to prove it?

Because its not rocket science to put the right amount of burgers - or right burger and chips in a bag, or count 5 nuggets to put in a box put in a bag and hand to the person in the window is it? Im not asking them to land on the moon.

            • @pharkurnell: that's a pretty poor justification for not needing proof. again, what is to stop anyone from walking / calling up or emailing and claiming that their order is wrong? they could be someone who hadn't even had an order, which is why proof is required that you actually had an order.

it isn't rocket science, but they are often quite busy and need to get orders out fast, so mistakes happen, it's a simple matter of checking your food and if it's wrong, go back round or park and walk in, it's not as if you have to land on the moon

              • @[Deactivated]:

that's a pretty poor justification for needing proof.

Cause i shouldn't have to… again, is it too hard a challenge to put 5 ( 1, 2, 3,4 ,5) nuggets in box and hand it to a customer. and then put 4 chips in a box and hand those over…

You seem to accept shit service as being normal fixed with a phone call.

                • @pharkurnell: Again, when they’re busy, mistakes happen. It’s McDonald’s, you can’t expect top notch service.

It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s an easy fix.

                • @pharkurnell: Most of the issues is because of the speaker system is too hard to hear. They should go app only, park and order and you get sent a message to go to drive through when the food is ready.

If you don't have the app go inside

      • I caught some blokes in Maccas abusing some of the female staff and spitting in the tray they keep burger meat in between it being cooked and being put in a burger, and head office referred it back to the manager and store owner (basically meant they did absolutely nothing). Not even a voucher offered. Won't go back to that one

    • HJs way worse near me - go there regularly and at least 50% of orders are f..d up and way slower…. but I still go

    I've quietly boycotted a few brands/shops which I once used/trusted:

    • Suspension Espresso - for their stance on/support of the Blockade Australia clowns
    • Volkswagen and Tesla - for their utter consumer contempt and coverups
    • Shopback - privacy breach management/disclosure, astroturfing review sites
    • MSY - leopards don't change their spots
    • Uber - every trip became a sh*tshow and it's easier to just get a cab
    • Viagogo - marketplace for ticket scalping scumbags
    • +4

Our old Golf had the dodgy DSG. Threw heaps of money at it for naught and glad we traded it in.

      • +3

Yeah…Golf MKV GT Sport TSI was our last VW. DSG hell.

        • +2

You picked the worst one physically possible. Garbage engine and garbage gearbox in one.

    • +2

I'd buy your book… for uber to be so bad that you'd go back to cabs, you've got stories to tell

      • +3

Chapter two would be called "At least taxis turn up" 😉

        • +1
        • +1

Last couple of times I was in Melbourne I was astounded by how bad Uber has become. Caught cabs instead.

        • I disagree. I relied on cabs for a 6am flight once a fortnight for 2 years. Most of those times, my half asleep wife ended up in the passenger seat while i drove to the airport.

Unfortunately, uber drivers have learned to work the system too now so its all a shitshow. The commonality.. the systems they're involved in treat them like shit so they work the system. In cabs, none of them owned the plates, usually some rich old folk's super fund, forced to work shifts for no rides to get the lucrative fri/sat night shifts. In uber, a race to the bottom with costs and an ever increasing uber commission to offset "coupons" and encourage consumer adoption.

          I'll just drive myself thanks.

    • +11

Shopback and their endless fake positive reviews…

      • +2

        Aye!

        • +1

Just checked Productreview. Shopback is STILL astroturfing multiple times a week. I wish they'd all get deleted.

    • +10

      MSY

These guys are seriously dodgy. They spam called me over 50 times in a row non-stop to harass me when I did a charge back for their shitty order system that didn't deliver my order. They full threatened and harassed me over the phone over it. Seriously unprofessional jokers.

      • -1

MSY is great … just treat them like you would a gumtree transaction.

        • No idea why the negs….
then again never had to do a return thru them… never had a problem with the guys at Mitcham store.

    • +5

Uber was good at the start, now they are unreliable and expensive. Switched over to DiDi (same drivers lol) and back to taxi’s.

Best thing about Uber is that they helped lift the poor standards of Taxi’s.

      Viagogo has always been scum.

Add to that Agoda. They always under quote the price until you checkout

    • -4

Suspension Espresso - for their stance on/support of the Blockade Australia clowns

Time to shop at Suspension Espresso since I support the Blockade Australia legends

      • +5

Nice, I’d be happy to blockade your street! Just need to let me know where, I’ll let you know the when!

  • +5

I try to boycott Raytheon and Norththropp Grumman - but if their missiles are cheap enough…

  • +3

Optus was a deliberate boycott about 15yrs ago due to poor service, still haven't gone back but more due to the value proposition for me as opposed to a deliberate boycott now.

    • +2

      And they hired Gladys.

  • +10

OzBargain due to some of the fools on this forum who go to any length to save $1 and preach to other fools to do the same. Broke people teaching broke people.

    • $1 for 100 transactions adds up. That’s 20 coffees lad.

  • +3

    Deliveroo.

I have lost count of how many times I saw a deliveroo rider riding dangerously on the footpath, then on the road, then back on footpath menacing pedestrians by performing dangerous maneuvers. I am hesitant to give them my business as I don't want to encourage this kind of risky behaviour on the road.

    • those riders are independent contractors. they dont work for deliveroo

      • +17

that "independent contractor" bullshit is just a legal loophole to reduce liability for deliveroo, they are effectively deliveroo employees, just without any of the benefits and all of the downsides. same goes for uber and all the others like them.

  • -8

I will actively patronise companies that hire employees as cheap as they can negotiate or engage companies in countries have low minimum wage requirements.

7/11, Dominos, your local Chinese restaurants etc.

We want as low labour costs as possible for the companies to keep prices down for the consumer.

    • +5

      Based.

    • +8

Be careful what you wish for..

    • I see where you’re coming from. After price hikes and inflation I feel the need to be meaner with money.

    • +3

Can't tell if trolling or an actual terrible human bean.

    • Hehe, as Ozbargainers we're all guilty! Comment gets negged with cognitive dissidence.

  • +2

Subway, because they wouldn’t swap the ham on my sandwich for turkey…

    • +14

      Those bustards.

      • Didn’t think so many people would get my pun.

    • -1

What do you mean "swap"? Like you asked them to make a ham and at the very end you wanted them to take the ham off, scrape off the sauces and salads, then put it back in the tub and put turkey on?

    • Subway, cause everything tastes the same there now.

  • +19

Ozbargain favourites Kogan and Harvey Norman

  • +8

Am I the first to nominate Kogan?
Unethical? Dodgy? Kogan ticks all the boxes…

  • +5

    AGL

    • +1

      why?

  • +17

Gillette. They made that stupid ad insulting their customers.

    • +5

Agreed, and their shavers are overpriced. However aren’t they owned by Unilever who own just about everything? How to avoid all their brands?

      • +4

Yes, many major shaving brands are owned by Unilever. I think also even dollar shave?

I got into using single blade safety razors.

Plenty of brands of blades that are cheap, last a long time + give a much better shave than the shit Gillette multi blade overpriced products.

Shaving creams from taylor of old bond st & Proraso are cheap + great quality & MUCH better for your skin.

        • I definitely agree about the safety razors, so much cheaper, give a better shave and cut far less (once you get the hang of them).

I also used to use all those fancy imported creams exclusively but then by chance tried Sanofi shave while travelling for work, it's Glycerin and coconut oil based, made in Brisbane and available from Woolies/Coles for about $2.50 for a 75g tube. Works out to be a bit less than half the price of Proraso. It's the most underrated shaving product on the shelves at the supermarket IMO.

        • Yep P&G

Some things they own are: Head and shoulders, Pampers, Oral B, Ariel (Dynamo), Pantene, Vicks, Olay, Tampax, Venüs, Braun, Herbal Essences. Fairy.

      • Gillette are owned by P&G not Unilever

    • -4

In what way was their ad insulting?

      • +1

        what is this ad ??

        • Something something men should promise not to beat up women.

          • @Hahuh: yikes. I never saw it. That's weird

      • +2

        insults men

  • Avoiding Harvey Norman, Nestle, Apple, Samsung, VW, uber, whirlpool

    • I understand all the others. Why Whirlpool? Sorry if this is a stupid question…

      • -1

Nah, not a stupid question. Probably more to do with me than WP. I just found it to be a bit cliquey and everyone seems to be on $200k+ and not as friendly.

        • +1

it's weird that you consider ozbargain is more friendlier than wp? I prefer Oz over WP too

          • +1

@ntt: Ozb definitely has it's unfriendly elements. I guess I'm used to it a bit more.

  • +14

    Apple

    • +2

      Mention Apple, get negged. Lol

      • I personally don't use use Apple but I did buy my wife an iPad Pro as she wanted to use Procreate… But it's possibly the only one I will ever buy her due to the horrendous experience with unlinking her old Apple ID (which she had forgotten the password to and we couldn't reset the password due to a long story). I'm hoping the Android competition brings out a better tablet with a better digital drawing experience.

        • +1

They do make some great products. I just find a lot of their stuff hamstrung because they want to squeeze every dollar out of consumers.

        • +7

So do you think you will get better service when you forget your password for the android system on a Samsung tablet?
Sounds like simple, unfounded bias to me. People love to crap on Apple, but in the end no can argue that they provide the best service and support for their products in the industry. Of course there will always be outlier stories which people will like to focus on, but big picture tells the more accurate story.

          • +3

@Karfaffel: I boycott Apple for their overpriced sub-standard products.

For the same price, I have found the alternatives better.

Except for the iPhone 12 Pro Max that my work gave me, our family has only Android devices, and very happy with the same.

For the record, I prefer my Android phones.
