  • Can someone please tell me if the cables are not placed properly, potentially there is a possibility that the garage opener may short circuit and break? Thanks

    • Can you elaborate on what you mean by cables not being placed properly? Do you mean placed inside the terminal block?

      • apology for my lack of knowledge. I would assume so, where the cables are terminated on the garage opener side.

Is there a chance the track could bend?

      • +5

        Not on your life

      • -4

Why would the track bend ?
All this does is add an online connectivity module, allowing the existing garage opener to be controlled by either a smart phone or a smart assistant (Google Home or Alexa).
If the garage door opens smoothly now, then there is no danger of the track bending

        • +6

this was a Simpsons monorail reference…

What about us brain dead slobs?

        • +1

          You’ll be given cushy jobs!

    • I suppose it’s possible, but not very likely.

I would look up the instructions for your garage opener first.

For mine it plugged into 2 clearly defined and separated terminals.

    • Without knowing which garage opener you use, it's a tad hard to answer.
If it is any consolation, I've installed these several times, often through trial and error, and not borked any of them.

But, I'm not an electrician, so do your own risk assessment and see if it is worth it.
The instructions are clear enough, it's just that the garage openers are often missing the required documentation.

    • +1

      This is not professional advise.

      I don't think so.
The way these garage openers work is when u press a button to open the garage, it shorts(connects) the 2 terminals which causes the door to open or close. This is why the polarity of the 2 terminals doesn't matter.
If your cables aren't connected properly, i.e. 1 gets loose/falls out, then all that happens is you won't be able to open the garage using that remote.

It's a different story if you have other loose cables connected to the live terminals and then one of the garage opener's cables falls and makes contact with them.

    • The version 3 and above come with most of the installation.

You have to install the meross app and follow the instructions.

When it comes to wire installation, all you have to do is:

      • Power the Smart garage device using the USB adapter provided alongside. All you need is a socket near the garage opening main device.
      • Put the exposed wires/ cables from Meross device (sides dont matter) in the same channels as the cables from the wall unit are put in.

In addition to that, you just have to stick the garage opening sensor on the sliding track in a way that when they open or close, they align to be less than inch away.

    • +1

it's like adding a wired physical button on the wall. just that this is wireless and the button is your phone/voice

  • Anyone know what's the difference vs this? Looks very similar from description and simply the model number is diff: MSG100HK-3 v MSG100

one compatible with Apple Homekit and one not (the cheapest option).

    If you don't need Siri/Apple functionality it's $49.99 https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07QCTN71J/ref=sspa_dk_detail_1…

  • I dont have a smart home. I don't use Alexa or Google assistant or any of that. But I like the idea of using my phone to open and close my garage door…. Would this be the one I should get? I see quite a few meross deals but not sure which is the cheapest / basic meross which I should be getting.

    • +2

The 49$ one will suit you. Very handy kit.

    • +1

you should buy the non Apple Homekit one link

      • Will it work with old garage door SECURALIFT ?

        • You need to check the product compatibility guide

    • If your garage door opener has trigger terminals then it will be fine. I use both the app on the phone or Google Assistant for my Meross kit, works really well.

    • +1

Do you have an iphone? If so, I would recommend the Homekit version - mainly because you can also control the door using Apple Car Play (it uses geolocation to enable when you are close to your home) in addition to just using your phone.
Otherwise, it doesn't matter which version of the Meross Smart Garage door opener you get, they all require an app to be installed on your phone that you can then use to control it remotely (anywhere in the world!) - Alexa and Google Assistant are not required, they just give you the option to use them to open/close door, find out status, etc. (I like checking to see if the garage door is closed before I go to bed, just in case :-)

      • Yeah the iPhone Homekit compatibility is huge in that you can swipe down your Control Centre > tap to open garage door. It's pretty fast as well from my experience in using mine.

      • Thank u!

    • Thanks everyone, for the comments!

  • +1

    Just installed mine yesterday!!!

    So good :) Very happy.

  • +1

is there a better product that works well with home assistant? or is this the go to?

    • +1

      Shelly 1

      Less than half the price ($15 + $10 p/h)
Cloud access (if you want it).
MQTT support (if you want it).
      Tier 1 support for HA

May be a little more playing around but the idea is the same. A WiFi relay that closes the circuit to "press" the garage open/test.

      • Have you ever use one of it for lights?

I'm after a smart switch that is compatible with Aussie Standards and it's not so expensive.

        Cheers.

        DL

        • I haven't done it yet. Not my place to mod or else I would have.

Do have mates that have had it done by an electrician though.

          • @String name: Sweet, Thanks mate.

I thought of buying this Light Switch, which is Aus certified and all the bits and bobs that's required, but also had the Shelly in mind as well.

      • thanks. getting started with HA on the new house and im making a shopping list

  • do we need a sparky or is it diy?

    • +3

DIY, it's not difficult to install.

    • provided you have a spare powerpoint near by, its DIY.

      usb cable for power,
2 wires to connect to your garage door motor board where a standard wall switch would connect,
another longer cable to run down to the door for the open/close sensor, plus the magnet which needs to sit next to the sensor.

it shouldnt take you more than 15 minutes to install.

ive been running the homekit one for maybe 3 years no, no really any issues,
i had maybe one bad firmware where it would keep showing up as not connected, but that was maybe for a month in the last 3 years, where it needed a power cycle.

  • I dont have wifi at home at the moment. Does it require wifi or just 4g from phone is good enough?

    • +1

      You would need wifi.

    • Needs wifi. Specially 2.4g wifi.

      • yes I haven`t been able to connect mine yet as my wifi is all 5g

        • The G in 2.4G wifi and 5G wifi is GHz / Gigahertz.

The 5G network you are saying is fifth generation mobile network.

That 5G is not this 5G.

I got one Meross too. It needs 2.4 GHz Wifi.

          "Technology Gap."

          • @FireStallion: maybe he/she is talking about a fixed 5G service… which dont always let you add on certain smart home products

  • -4

You'd have to make your phone a hotspot every time you wanted to command it, which less than convenient when you're trying to get the door to open whilst you're in the car.
There are plenty of garage openers that don't need online connectivity, and these may be more suited to your needs.

  • +2

Bought this a month ago and DIY'd the install on a Gliderol Genesis. Pretty easy. Symbols on the terminals on the Gliderol unit were a bit weird looking compared to the manual but worked it out in the end.

Worst thing about it is when I ask Google Home to open the garage door it asks for a PIN. I couldn't figure out how to turn it off even though I turned it off in the settings. But on the other hand it's a sensible feature to have for security.

    • +1

Not sure if this works with GH, but with Alexa you have to address the app specifically in the voice command.
"Alexa, ask Smart Meross to open garage door"

Otherwise, it will ask for the PIN. YMMV

      • Cheers I'll give it a go.

    • If you install the Meross app you can untick the PIN code requirement under voice control.

      A bit risky though?

      • +1

If you do this Google home just tells you a pin needs to be set up

    • Can you help in confirming the gliderol genesis model. i have 1417D and could not find it in the compatibility list.

      • +1

Hey I'm just in a rental so not sure what genesis mod they bought. I flicked through the manual just now and there's no mention of a model no. Weird.

I think if your manual has a section for wiring up a wall button then it should be good.

  • +1

Just got the Bunnings $40 one over the weekend, and used homebridge to make it work with Homekit.
It worked like a charm with Siri, no pin requested like Google and Alexa.
I would highly recommend the bunnings one over this if you know how to use homebridge.

    • can you share some more info on which product you purchased from Bunnings and whats is HomeBridge?

    • I installed the Bunnings one about 6 months ago, still working well. Highly recommend it.

    • Hi mate, what type of device are you using for the HB? Raspberry pi or pc/mini pc? Cheers

      • I am using a Synology NAS

        • 👍 am looking around to get something for HB/HA.

  • I've read elsewhere that while this works with Google assistant, it cannot be added in Google Home. Anyone able to confirm this?

    • +3

See my comment above, it works with Google assistant and can be added to Google home.

      • Great, thank you

        • Sorry just double checked it can be added to Google home but there's no controls. I only use it via voice commands. Otherwise you need to control it via the Methods App

          • @jaypee06: Meross* app

            • @jaypee06: It should show controls in google home once you add a pin through the Meross app although as with all smart-home things it's better to use the app as the cross-app integration seems to break occasionally.

Best tech I have ever bought in the last 10 years. Just make sure your garage door opener has an existing 'external wired switch accessory option' to tap into it's cabling and just with 2 wires connected you will be ready to rock and roll. One of those tech inventions that really saves you headache and time even though it's just a few seconds of life saved fumbling over garage remotes. Works perfectly every time with 'Hey Siri'.

  • +2

For those looking, I purchased the Wofea WiFi Switch Smart Garage Door Opener for half the price. Works well, easy to install.

I've got three of these, Tuya based and work well with Tuya Local and Home Assistant.

If you don't want Tuya cloud I've also used these with Home Assistant and they're also great: https://www.athom.tech/blank-1/garage-door-opener-for-esphom…. I'm moving some of my Wofea ones to these so will have a couple of Wofea's free

    • My wofea died after about 6mths. Worked fine until then

    • also have this one, working for the past 2-3 years no issues

  • Here is a good YouTube video showcasing this neat price of tech :)

    https://youtu.be/EXwDhqhnbW8

  • Can this be piggybacked with a bosch alarm wireless receiver, basically does the same thing as this unit without the smart wifi integration.

My bosch remote has arm/ disarm and open/close garage door button separate so wondering if will run havoc with it getting a signal from bosch system.

    • Yes, it can be piggy backed, since Bosch is just closing the garage door switch contact. Can also be piggy backed with physical electrical garage door switch.

      • Brilliant thanks

  • Anyone use this a similar for their automatic slider gate? The brand we have is called Nice.

The model is the Filo 400, thanks.

    • +1

If the slider gate has switch contacts that you can short (with a paperclip, screwdriver, foil) that will open/close the gate, this will work. You just connect it across those terminals/contacts.

  • Can I ask those who have smart garages, is it possible to design the system so that the garage opens or close as you approach/leave the home?
    Thanks.

    • To get clearer advice, which system will you be using: Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or SmartThings?

      • +1

        Google assistant.

    • It’s possible but I’d consider whether this is something you actually want.

Your phone’s GPS isn’t perfectly accurate, so it could trigger even if you’re driving nearby.

I have mine set up with a Siri voice command, so as I’m turning on to my street I say the command and the door is opened by the time I get to the garage.

Much safer knowing that I’ve consciously opened the door than worrying that it opened inadvertently.

      • Good point.

  • any product can do plate detection, such as the shopping centres ones

  • Test your garage opener first by shorting the terminals that go to the wall switch with a pair of pliers first to see if this will work with yours

  • Looks like this requires 2.4GHz wifi. Any recommendations for a similar product that can use 5GHz? (My home, for better or worse, is 5 GHz only.)

    • +1

I think all wifi routers are backwards compatible unless you specifically switch off your 2.4ghz or 2.4/5 ghz channel sharing.

  • Had anyone installed one of these on a centsys D5 Evo sliding gate?

I gather it's possible, but how do you keep it from getting wet when the motor is out in the open on a sliding gate?

  • This is brilliant. Best purchase in a long time. Open the garage door when I am round the corner via my apple watch.

  • Fantastic product. Works perfectly and took all of 15min to setup. Use it with my Apple Watch, CarPlay and Alexa.

  • what advantages are there of using this vs an RF Remote Control like Broadlink RM Pro?
It can also open my garage door anywhere without having to install any wiring to the garage door control unit.

    • Many garage door openers use rolling code remote transmitters which the Broadlink RF devices may not be able to replicate.

  • +1

I don't get how they can charge 60 for a wifi relay. Sonoff has a 5v relay available for 7 that does the same thing. https://itead.cc/product/sonoff-sv/

    • I have this, works great. But doesn’t really know the state of the garage door if you use another remote to open the garage door in between.

  • You need an apple home hub device to control this when not connected to your home wifi

  • anyone know if this will work with TEMPO™ ATS-2

    https://www.ata-aust.com.au/garage-door-openers/overhead-doo…

    thanks

    • +1

Meross offers excellent customer support. I expect they will advise which terminal connections to test - which will likely be OSC and GND on terminal block J4. I received similar advice for my Forza 1200.

      • thanks

        • Did you manage to get a definitive answer?
I am actually looking at buying this exact model to replace a very old one (moving into a new place) and am bringing my meross with me.
          Thanks.

  • Just received mine and at the front it says MSG100 but "works with Apple Homekit". The back has a sticker barcode saying MSG100HK(AU) Ver4.1….
