Get google tv gang worth it. Chuck kodi, cinemaHD, puffin TV browser

    • -2

      we already have fire tv.

      • I have the Fire TV, the non-Amazon apps are a tad flaky.

        • +1

You can sideload any app from Google tv

    • +3

"Google TV" has been discontinued. How a discontinued smart TV operating system "worth it" more than this? Or did you mean a "Chromecast with Google TV"?

Then perhaps mention HOW are the others are "better"?

i.e. You've posted a statement with certain knowledge in your head for people who obviously don't have it, which they still don't have.

      • +1

Then perhaps mention HOW are the others are "better"?

        Umm they did 🤦‍♂️

He said “Chuck kodi, cinemaHD, puffin TV browser”. None of this things can be done with this old shitty Chromecast. Only the Chromecast with Google TV.

        • -3

Well sure, but they're just product names with nothing about why/how they are better. What I mean is, obviously there's still a market for this otherwise no-one would be buying it years later… but if other things are better then there are reasons why, which people buying this don't know about.

  • Which one is this, the latest?

Edit: not really sure what the difference is but this is the one I was hoping for https://store.google.com/product/chromecast_google_tv?hl=en-…

This chrome cast version inferior to next gen. No remote and quality is not great.

    • +9

And it's not a standalone media streaming device.

      • +1

Admittedly though, sometimes you don't need one. My mum doesn't use tech so this is cheap and when I go over I just use my phone. She also only has a FHD TV. It would be a waster putting in a current gen there.

Thought I would save money by giving her my unused foxtel box, but can't cast Kayo to that cos it's locked. Then figured I would give her a firestick I had spare, can't download the kayo app or cast to that either.

        • +1

Other thing to consider is that the next gen allows you to connect to bluetooth speakers - great if you have a TV that doesn't have Bluetooth. This personally saved me.

          • +1

@Lets Make Sandwiches: Not great, Bluetooth has unavoidable latency that does my head in for TV or gaming. You'll never notice listening to music.

      • +1

Exactly, you shouldn't need to cast from your phone these days.

        • +3

Honest question, how is that better?
I've got all the video apps on my phone signed in, they're easy to navigate and I just hit cast, so do other users from their phones. That just works for any screen in the house.
This sounds like it's more limiting in that you need to sign in again on this, and you have to use their remote to navigate (no keyboard)
I was looking at this to replace an ultra to get Bluetooth support but it seems like a downgrade

          • @based: Don't need to use your phone or its battery is probably the main thing. Gets a bit much phones all the time.

            • @G-rig: It doesn't really use your phones battery once you cast its all direct connected via the device.

              • @Jackson: Ah ok. Still prefer streaming device instead of casting from phone.

              • @Jackson: No idea why you'd buy an obsolete model unless you have an old FHD TV that is non-smart (but otherwise fine).. micro USB and 1080p max isn't the best these days.

                • @G-rig: Intended tv is FHD, micro usb doesn't matter as its never unplugged. I stated above the use case. Oh and add to that source is never 4k anyway (at least hasn't ever been in the past)

                  • @Jackson: No worries.

Still recommend the new gen for most people if you are going to bother getting one (instead of using the built in tv OS).

    • Also no Bluetooth

    • That’s like saying the iPhone is inferior to the iPhone Pro…like of course it is but they are different products for different needs. Ones $39, other is $99

Pass. Spend the extra and get the Google TV.

    • +1

Yeah this device is pretty old and outdated

      • +1

Does the job just fine and a good price for what it is.

    • +1

There have been articles by tech reviewers preferring their Chromecast Ultra over Chromecast w/ Google TV.
Primarily due to the fact that Chromecast on Google TV(Sabrina) is garbage.

If this was the Chromecast Ultra for the same price, I would buy it.

Their current special price seems more like it should be the standard price.

      • +2

I have Chromecasts, Chromcast Ultras and Google TV.

Google TV isnt garbage but I prefer the ultra as we have multiple people who watch, dont want to have to sign in and out.

TBH I have both on two of my three main tvs for that reason

    • +2

Yes, no reason not to get the Google TV, great experience and miles better than my TVs built in google UI.

Got the chrome cast google tv, but how to AirPlay via chrome cast google tv?

    • -1

      Get apple tv for airplay

      • You can cast to chromecast from Apple devices

  • I’ve Appletv smart tv chromecast and ytube premium, I always end watching Netflix on smart tv, the only good support is watching streaming thru vlc and chromecast any version is fine as quality it’s based on ISP provider

  • +1

Get fire tv 4k for $20 more when on sale

    • Nah stick to Chromecast. Got rid of my fire TV. Casting sucks on fire tv

      • +1

Once you install apps casting becomes redundant

        • Not for me I want to cast from my phone. Firetv requires an app to enable casting that now requires you to pay. I could only cast one show before it said trial ended

If I'm just wanting to cast twitch from my phone, would this suffice?

  • +1

This came out in 2013. Old tech. At least get 4k Chromecast. Recently this also stopped working on 5GHZ WIFI.

  • +4

    No Bluetooth
    No 4k
    No remote
    No app store
    No internal memory

      Add No working 5ghz wifi

    • +4

      No point haha.

this is great for a kids tv where you want to retain control from your phone. I have this set up on my tv monitor which is part of my wfh set-up

  • +2

I find when i cast to this older gen Chromecast it'll show up straight away on the TV. Whereas if I cast to google TV chromecast it will open the google TV menu and I have to go find the controller for the Google TV Chromecast and select it (extra step but it's so annoying). Does anyone have this problem when casting to google TV?

  • Can I stream online casino from Chrome on laptop to tv?

  • Target has it for $37 atm :)
