Obligatory isn't a new model coming out?

    • +4

Yes in 2023 or 2024 or 2025 maybe.

    • I had a quick look and I read that they're releasing new firmware/software/UI (I forgot what they called it but I think it was version 9.1).

But I couldn't find anything about a new model, on Reddit someone said that with the chip shortage, not to expect a new model in 2022-2023.

I was going to get one, but now I don't know whether I should wait for the new model, if there is one coming out (which I wouldn't be surprised judging by how often they have been on sale lately).

      • +1

The new model will come out when the Switch successor comes out because they'll be using the same chip again. With the switch still selling gang busters don't expect it within the next 2-3 years.

        • Thanks for the info, I'll check it out. I never would have guessed that they share the same chip.

    • +1

Hopefully with full AV1, 4k 120 support (I dunno might be useful for fancy game streaming?)

  • +1

Same price on Amazon with free prime delivery 👌

    • Thanks.

I saw that too, but someone elso posted the Amazon deal less than a month ago (before it expired) so I can't repost it.

But yeah, it's a good alternative.

  • +9

Come on uncle Gerry throw in a $50 voucher ya tight arse

  • Anyone having to restart theirs every single time or the apps won't stream? I think its a caching issue, but that's just my inexperienced self.

    • I've been using mine for a while now, don't think I've encountered this issue yet.

Perhaps do a factory reset if it's not a hassle for you?

      • Will try that

    • +2

I had that (non-pro model). A factory reset after the recent update seemed to fix the issue.

      • Thanks for that. Yeah I've got the first launch ones (2016ish I think?)

      • Not really CEC related. It's more like the streaming apps (Netflix, 7plus, Crunchyroll etc) won't stream and just crash or stuck at a percentage and play in the background for Netflix.

        • Sorry, I was sure I read it was effecting apps as well? Maybe that was another glitch?

    • My older model (2016?) had this issue. Factory reset sorted it out. My 2019 was fine following the same update.

      • Yeah, everyone suggested the same. Will do it once I am back home

  • Does the standard one pass through true hd atmos in plex or is it only the pro that does it?

    • Standard will do it fine

  • +3

It's a great device, but has not been upgraded in so many years!
I just found out that the normal (non pro) 2017 model has been later charnged to pro. And then the new non pro model has functionality cut off. So it is actually going backwards as years go by.

    • It's a great device, but has not been upgraded in so many years!

If you mean hardware, true, software though , it just had an OS upgrade a few months back that caused havoc amongst many users :)

I have had mine for 18 months, but it still works with zero issues. No need for a hardware upgrade I guess when this ones not being taxed ?

      • +1

Mine came with a controller and TV remote as part of the deal, now they're more expensive and you only get half the hardware. On the bright side it now comes with free ad's and doesn't break my device as often.

      • it just had an OS upgrade a few months back that caused havoc amongst many users :)

Is that where they introduced ads to the homescreen?

        • Dunno about you but I don't tend to just sit there and look at the home screen. When I turn mine on the cursor is literally on the row of installed apps.

    • Yeah they went too good early! Lol

    • +6

Given they've effectively been supporting this device since 2015, with tonnes of new features and updates I'd say its a bit rich to say they are going backwards. This level of support is virtually unheard of anywhere especially in the Android environment.

    • +5

Receives constant updates and is still likely the best Android TV device on the market…

  • I bought Hisense u7g but only play video 24hz. Does that pro 4k can also upscale to 60hz also?
    Kinda annoying with ghostjng

    • Don't think this is true, seeing normal fta is 50hz in Australia and NTSC is 60hz.

    • +5

Highly recommend the remote as an upgrade if you have the older remote.
Much more solid and comfortable to use.
Virtually everyday I was fishing the original, thin remote out from between the couch as it constantly slipped down - newer remote, this never happens.

      • Except buttons on newer remote still too sensitive. I found the arrow buttons easy to press wrong direction. Compared with a normal TV remote with bigger more tactile buttons, the shield remote is a step down.

    • +1

      It's an amazing deal apparently!

    • +2

My remote broke a couple of weeks ago, been using the phone app to control it which can be annoying. I hadn't found a replacement yet so I actually bought one when I read your comment :D

  • +2

I picked up the Shield TV from centrecom 2 weeks ago for $180 including postage.

    • -5

Would you like an award mate?

      • +7

He's well within his rights to point out that this isn't actually a deal. Particularly not if it's run out stock.

Some of you get far too offended by the chance to critically assess if something is, in fact, a bargain.

        • -7

But how does that help anyone right now?
It's like saying you got one for $150 brand new off Gumtree. Cool story bro 👍

          • +3

@[Deactivated]: It doesn't have to help anyone right now. A factual statement that provides context into the fact pricing is elevated and is thus likely to come down again in the near future is extremely relevant.

You impulse buying crack bunnies get so offended when anything gets between you and today's retail purchasing high. Settle down.

            • -4

@[Deactivated]: Ok, well it's been as low as $158 so why would anyone care that this individual purchased it for $180? A pointless comment is pointless.

              • +2

@[Deactivated]: I heard your opinion the first time. I'm not going to agree. Please stop. This urge to force everyone to align with your sentiment is incredibly narcissistic.

It's social media, not your soapbox. Let people talk without your permission, and jog on please.

      • -1

I hope getting that out makes you feel like a big man now…
I'm clearly pointing out that you can get it cheaper than this all the time.

    • -5

Give this man an award! 🥇

For your average Joe and app based watching, not much. The shield is for streaming games and other power uses

      • I've been a bit confused by this since much of the shield TV info redirects to GeForce now. So if you have a Shield TV and an appropriate NVIDIA card you can stream games from your PC and use peripherals connected to the shield device? Are there any limitations to this? (e.g. restricted game library, offline only, limited peripherals such as gamepad only) Or is it a good screen mirroring platform that simply works?

        • I was under the impression it streams from the ‘cloud’ but I’ve never looked into it

        • +1

It streams anything from Steam pretty reliably, you can use most controllers - Xbox/Playstation/Switch or Keyboard and mouse it only has 2 USB ports though.

It needs to be on the same network as your PC but not necessarily online.

Its capable of running some good emulation independent of the PC which is nice.

Runs Kodi, Netflix, Stan, Kayo and any other platform you could want

Can AI upscale content to 4k which works really well.

        • +1

If you have a PC with an appropriate Nvidia GPU you can stream your games to your shield via your PC, so the game is just running as usual on your PC but the video output is being sent to the Shield TV, and your controller that paired to the Shield TV sends its inputs via the network to the PC.

You can also use Geforce Now, which is just a cloud based game streaming service, playing them on the server and streaming the video to you.

I personally haven't been able to get the nvidia pc-to-shield game streaming to work unfortunately. Steam Link on the Shield TV works, from the same PC, but the nvidia one just sits there on loading whenever I start a game and then times out while the game sits at the main menu on my PC.

        • +1

There are multiple different things available on the Sheild, not all available to everyone. There is GeForce Now, Gamestream and Steam Link.

GeForce Now = Cloud Streaming. Available to anyone. Don't have to have your own PC somewhere.
GameStream = Home Streaming if you have an Nvidia GPU - not all games work off the bat, some need adding manually to the service.
Steam Link = Home Streaming, doesn't need an Nvidia GPU - most games work directly from the app.

If you have an AMD card, you can use Steam Link and GeForce Now. Steam Link, like GameStream, will mirror your PC and so your PC will be running everything on the screen while you're gaming on another, like the lounge TV for example.

Personally, even though I have an Nvidia GPU, I tend to use Steam Link because I know it'll work with most games and I know how to fix any issues quicker. I'm sure GameStream is good too and usually with Nvidia things, it's fairly simplified but with less options (like streaming via GeForce Experience is to OBS for example). I've used GeForce Now before to test it out but in all honestly, I've never had a need to use it as I usually play on my home network and my GPU is good enough for most games, or at least equivalent to the "free" tier that GeForce Now offers, and without timelimits. I have used it on my Chromebook on mobile network too and it worked. Not well, but it worked. Sure if it was on a decent NBN connection, I'd have been able to play fine. And that's exactly what it's for - those without GPUs or low-end PCs/tablets/phones. I played Dead Cells on the Sheild via Geforce Now on my home network and there was no percievable lag but YMMV.

I use my Shield all the time as it's also my Plex server (media on a seperate NAS). I have 3 Shields, 1 connected to a smart TV with Chromecast built in, so it doesn't get used TOO much there. 1 is connected to an old tv in the bedroom (used a lot), and 1 to the home theatre with surround sound receiever etc. All work well, and quickly. Also, they're fantastic for things like Retroarch if you're into '80-'90s games.

        • +1

Thanks for these replies. It has really clarified some of the gaming options the the shield TV allows for.

    • -1

Best thing for me is it can access fat32.. Ie over 4gb files

      • I think you mean NTFS.. And I don't think that's unique, my cheap MiBoxes can do that.

        • My Vodafone TV lost that after an Android OS upgrade.

      • Format your drive using exFAT, not FAT32 then you want have the 4GB restriction

    • none.

I own 2 Nvidia Shield and, more recently purchased, 2 Firesticks 4K.

I purchased the original shield because I figured cloud gaming would be the new thing, turns out we couldn't access it because we were in AU. Then I tried streaming from my PC but it turned out the minimum requirements were a newly released 1080, my 980 just wouldn't cut it. When I could finally do it with a new 2080 super the quality was terrible and input lag horrendous.

I bought the first Firestick because the random updates Nvidia released kept breaking both the Shields, I bought a 2nd Firestick once I discovered how great they were for the price.

      • When I could finally do it with a new 2080 super the quality was terrible and input lag horrendous.

Surprising it’s so bad for you. I use Moonlight from my GTX 1070 to my 2015 Shield and never had an issue with quality or input lag using an Xbox One controller (directly connected to my PC a couple of rooms away connected through Ethernet).

If you haven’t already, give Moonlight a try and add your desktop and launch games from there, see if that works better.

    • I'm not totally sure on everything the Chromecast can do but on my Shield Pro I can run streaming apps through a VPN, install the Fdroid store and open source apps from there, install the Aurora store for access to all Android apps (not that they're all usable), browse the web while lying in bed using the Shield app on my phone which has a touchpad and software keyboard on any Android browser, connect to my network via ethernet cable, expand the memory, run it as a Plex server, stream Steam games from my PC (I did that a while ago but gave up on it in the end because it was glitchy despite the gigabit ethernet link). It can't, however, be added to Google speaker groups unless I'm missing something.

      • If they're looking at a Chromecast then they're probably interested in how easy the Shield is to use and how the devices compare streaming stuff so I didn't worry about the other stuff. The Firestick has no issues playing things like Kodi, not sure about the Chromecast.

    • Unless you want to use it to run emulators or stream games from your own nvidia gpu powered PC, basically no advantage worth the extra cost. I've got both btw and will recommend the Google Chromecast with Android TV to 99% of people.

    • HD Audio Passthrough. eg. Dolby Atmos, True HD, HDX, etc. No other box can do it.

    • +1

For me it's that the home screen won't show you a bunch of titles which are behind paywalls, effectively ads. With this device you only get recommendations from the apps installed and even on the discover page it'll only present titles from services you indicate you're interested in (with the exception of the trending on Google row).

I also love the customisable button at the top of the remote which allows you to set single press, double press and long press shortcuts (I have it set to live channels, plex and YouTube).

I find it much smoother to navigate around the home screen and possibly faster to load apps. Overall a premium experience compared with what to me seems to be a cheaper, subsidised by ads offering from Google.

My only gripe so far is that the volume buttons are really hard to locate without looking (while under a blanket for example). I find myself accidentally launching Netflix a lot.

  • How it is better than $50 amazon fire 4k max?

    • +1

If you have issues playing yout local media with your streaming stick then this box will more than likely solve that. If you don't then you don't need this box.

      • Should I avoid the risk of issues with the fire stick and just get the Pro here? I don't have any of the options at the moment and want to buy the right device to stream 4k HDR from a Nas over a wired connection. My NUC is battling to perform.

  • +1

I wanted to upgrade my 2017 model to the Pro 4K but doesn't seem worth it. Opinions?

    • What's a pro 4k?

But 2017 and 2019 are virtually identical, unless you're really wanting the 4k upscaling.

      • NVIDIA Shield TV Pro 2019.

Thanks. I'll stick to my old model. I upgraded the remote last year after all.

  • +3

Last deal was actually $196 for the Pro
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/715382

    • Yeah, that was a cracking price.
Not a fan of the shape though.

  • Do these still have the Google advertising or suggestions you couldn't remove that everyone was complaining about a few years ago?

    • Yep. But can be modded with Wolf Launcher
      https://troypoint.com/wolf-launcher/#Wolf_Launcher_on_NVIDIA…

      • On the Foxtel now boxes wolf was absolute garbage, it would freeze up and malfunction. It’s also outdated, It’s just a pirated copy of ATV launcher

        • +1

Not sure if you can run it on fox but I use flauncher on shield. Better than wolf.

    • They do and I'm certain every update makes it worse than the last.

    • You can disable Google Play Services to get rid of that homescreen advertising. Netflix will throw up an error message, but you can 'ok' through it without enabling the service again.

    • Yes, but the launcher defaults to your row of favourite marked apps so you basically never even see the "ads".

    • The solution is simple, sideload Blokada 4 using the Downloader app from the Google Play Store.

  • Do these units run free view?

    • No, FV is a service that runs off DTV.

      • but i can run the freeview app on my android phone / tablet……

If this is Android 9, i would have thought I should be able to install it ?

        • The FV app is designed for mobile devices.
What you are probably referring to are the catchup services which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah, that is why I am asking whether the FV app can be installed.

I was hoping to use one of these to avoid installing an antenna point for FTA TV on the bedroom TV.

I like that the freeview app TV guide and everything in one place rather than having to open up each networks app….

  • What do people use these for? Just streaming TV, media servers? what’s the benefit of one of these over a google chrome cast with tv or Apple TV ?

    • +1

I bought one for gaming and media, was terrible at both.
I bought a later model for media, it was riddled with ad's and constantly requires reboots.
I bought a Firestick 4K for media, loved it and bought another.
My Nvidia Shields and my Fire Sticks serve the exact same purpose, except the firesticks are in the bedrooms because they load quickly while the Shields are in the lounge areas because they boot slowly giving me time to make a coffee in the morning.

      • I have been using both generations Shields Pro and I've never experienced long loading times.

They play pretty much any kind of media you throw and have had great support from Nvidia.

The only disappointment is the recent advertising background they introduced with one of the updates a while back.

    • what’s the benefit of one of these over a google chrome cast with tv or Apple TV ?

It has a better processor and more RAM than the Chromecast with Google TV, unsure of how it stacks up against the Apple TV.

This and the Chromecast run Android/GoogleTV, compared to tvOS, you need decide which is more suitable for you.

    • The Apple TV is a much better device if you just want to stream media, and if you have an iPhone/iPad it's even better with screen mirroring and HomeKit etc.

The reasons to buy the Shield TV Pro are classic console emulation and game streaming.

    • Weyd, Syncler, SmartTube, etc.

  • Anyone thinking about the non-pro version needs to consider whether using it as a plex server will chew up too much memory. Adding a usb SSD to increase memory is problematic as you could get permission conflicts with the android OS running the shield.

  • If I'm just using it to play local videos through Plex or Kodi, do I need the Pro version? I want smooth menus and have 50GB+ 4K HDR movie files on a Nas, all wired connections.

  • Damn what's the alternative to Harvey Norman. I'd take a price match or even pay a little bit more to avoid supporting this bloke. Is there an alternative?
