    S3422DWG is 549 too

  • Is there any way of getting a bargain on an XPS 15?

    I'd like the 32GB DDR5, 1TB M.2, and 3.5K OLED, but it's still going for $3.6K here

      • Thx. $470 saving (13%) worth the secondhand vs. new?

        • +2

I don't know if I'd call refurb from Dell as second hand, you get warranty. Usually they look pretty much brand new. May be others can comment on recent experiences with Dell outlet? Haven't used it for many many years.

          • @scud70: I picked up a 32" 4k monitor from them - the $1300 Dell, got it for $900 to my door.

Box was a little bit banged up (but fine) contents fine, monitor worked great.

This is a little slack now days HDMI 1.4* (The maximum resolution supported over HDMI is 1920x1080 @60Hz. No 4K2K output)

    • +1

You can get 4k output but only at 30Hz.

      PS. I didn't downvote you.

      • it says no 4K/2K output, unless you have tested 2K and 4K and can confirm it works?

        on the Dell Website
**HDMI 1.4 (Maximum resolution supported over HDMI is 1920x1080 @60Hz. No 4K/2K output)

        • -1

HDMI 1.4 capabilities include 4k 30Hz but even if that doesn't work for some reason it has usb-c with displayport 1.4 support.

  • What happened to the 240hz and 360hz monitors

    • -1

You can't see more than 24.995Hz anyway.

      • That might be relevant if the monitor had GSync/FreeSync with your retinas so that the FPS lined up perfectly, maybe.

  • Is the storage upgradable?
Would be interested in 1tb, even if i can purchase and install myself.

as a former Dell reseller, my opinion is that Dell only does good monitors now (but check the specs you are getting a model suitable for your environment, in terms of panel type, brightness, color space). Some laptop models in Latitude and Precision lines aren't too bad, occasionally there's a good Inspiron 7000 or Vostro 5000 / 7000 model

I stopped selling Dell laptops a year or so ago. just my 5c

    • Given your experience, what brands do you think offer better consistency/quality?

More and more I get the impression that the days of 'X brand always put out good products' are mostly gone.

      • Apple?

      • +2

it's not like that at the moment, every brand has models that are better and worse

Lenovo seems to have a lot of good quality choice ATM. you have Thinkpads X1 Carbon, E14, T14. X1 and T14 are primary candidates for corporate fleets because they are well built and thought out.

Dell Latitudes used to be good, but recent models are not there with the quality. Currently Lenovo Thinkpads are the safest bet

        • Are XPSs still a quality product?

What's the best Lenovo equivalent, an X1 Carbon?

          • +2

@muwu: no, I never recommended XPS. they bill them as premium, but quality isn't great. a lot of silly design solutions, keyboards that fail, materials that quickly lose their premium look, cooling issues etc. form over function, they look fine (some of the models), but they are frustrating to use. speakers that aren't fixed firmly, this sort of thing you shouldn't really expect at this price range

Yes X1 Carbon is the closest in Lenovo range I guess? Lenovo has Ideapad Yoga "premium" models, but they are exactly like XPS: shiny looking, cost $$$ but poorly designed

if I needed a personal get things done laptop right now, I would get a T14 or X1 Carbon

    • nanoreview and all of these 'review comparison' sites are garbage and I would suggest not to use them.

If we really are going down this route, you would be looking at better performance with the intel machine, but better battery life with the ryzen chip. Because its the ryzen 5000 series, its igpu isn RDNA2 neither so its probably a tossup in performance between it and the intels xe igpu.

The ryzen version is cheaper though and I reckon at the end of the day battery life matters more to most people than better performance with machines like these.

  • I'm in the market for a laptop. $1000 +/- a few hundred. Can anyone recommend a model with good colour reproduction? Bit of Photoshop and maybe light gaming (side strollers, occasional AAA but ok playing low/medium settings) but mainly photoshop and general browsing etc.

    Considering this:

https://laptopmedia.com/au/laptop-specs/asus-vivobook-15-f51… I like the screen and backlit keyboard, I've heard bad things about Asus laptops, bad service. I used to love their Motherboards

Or : https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/lenovo-15-… better processor, maybe not as good build quality?

    Or just to be ridiculous:

    https://www.computeralliance.com.au/msi-katana-gf76-12uc-012… but screen isnt great.
