  • No wireless charging?

      I'm Ron Burgundy?

Only the Pixel 6 or 6 Pro from this series have wireless charging.

      That's pathetic!

        Seriously?!
        Software updates until 2027 - https://endoflife.date/pixel
Typical Chinese phone will stop updating in 2 years (in this price range). Google Camera competes with higher priced phones. Native Google experience including live transcribing and advance Google photos features. There is no other phone in this price range that comes remotely close to it.
(Pixel 6 and 6 Pro owner here. Google has fixed most of the bugs so it's a fine phone)

        • But wireless charging is standard these days…isn't it?

          • +6

@[Deactivated]: No, not in this price range. Very few mid-range phones have wireless charging.

          • @[Deactivated]: No, was looking for mid range phone and almost all don't have wireless charging. Samsung doesn't have it in mid range either. only S range.

            • @Spamazon: If it's really that important to you, you can always go for a Samsung S21 FE with wireless charging for $100 more than this phone at the moment.

        • As long as you can ignore all its bad sides or those issues don't mean much to you then yeah it is great. For me though the shitty battery life, no wireless charging, dual sim only with esim, poor fingerprint sensor, average screen are product killers for me.

        • As someone with a 4a that has wireless charging and most the other shit you just said. Yes seriously.

      • +2

        That's pathetic!

It's even more pathetic when you know how little it would cost to add one. Here's one that sticks to the outside of your phone, and plugs in through the USB port, for about 5 AUD, retail price: https://m.fasttech.com/product/6586000-qi-inductive-wireless…

I've used a similar one on my previous mobile, worked well. I'm waiting on receiving a cover for my new phone, so I can add a receiver to it as well. The receiver fits between the phone and the cover, tends to get dislodged if you don't have a cover over it.

My phones all have plastic cases though, I don't know if it will work with phones with metal backs.

        • If you have to plug it in the USB, not really wireless?

          • @Brianqpr: "Wireless" refers to the link between the receiver and the charging pad. Of course the receiver has wires, because the mobile phone only accepts wired charging.

    • if it had wireless charging no one would buy the expensive one

    • no unfortunately takes 2 hours for wire and 3 hours for wireless that's why I prefer wireles charging!

    • Wireless charging sucks, use the PD charger and cable that comes with it.

  • how bad is the camera compare to the 6/6pro?

    • +1

My previous phone was an Oppo Find X2 Pro, so in comparison to that the camera is a massive step down. But it's not awful for the price

    • It's the same camera as the Pixel 5. Some people actually prefer the photos from the Pixel 5 (and the 6A then as well) due to the changes in image processing with the 6.

The 6 has higher highs and lower lows, while the 6A is just consistently very good.

      • +2

Which is the same camera module as the pixel 2 i believe.

    • +2

My two cents coming from a Pixel 5. The screen, fingerprint sensor, battery life and camera are all downgrades…but then again so was the price I paid. If I was coming from a flagship iPhone, Galaxy or Pixel I'd really be disappointed, but then again the 5 wasn't anything special either.

Compared to my mates 6pro you can really see the difference in photos, it's hard to quantify but there just seems to be much more detail in low light and when zooming. Other than that, all the software is identical and it's been fault free for me. Tensor seems to handle everything except heavy mobile games, but that's probably the lack of ram too (6gb vs 8/12gb in the 6/6P).

TLDR: 6pro/6 Have better cameras, battery and screen.
6a is a bargain if you really just want a reliable, small-ish Android phone with all the Google benefits. Otherwise you'll get a better overall experience from a mid-range Samsung/Motorola/Oppo etc

  • +18

Bought it for $599 a few weeks ago. It's decent, but two things to be aware of:

    1) Awful battery life - it barely lasts the day on a full charge, and that's with pretty minimal use on my part
    2) The worst fingerprint sensor on any phone I've used. I've tried deleting and creating new fingerprints, locking and unlocking the phone, increasing the touch sensitivity, and nothing works. I've just turned it off, it's so useless.

So if you're buying the phone know that it has crap charge and, functionally at least, doesn't come with fingerprint sensors.

    • +7

      3) No wireless charging
      4) 60Hz display (will be a big difference if you have used 90Hz/120Hz display before)

      • +1

60hz is a deal killer after getting used to 120hz.

      • The panel is actually capable of up to 120Hz according to some reports, and Google is apparently testing a 90Hz mode. Some folks were able to get it to run at 90Hz in some hacky ways. But yeah you're right, the drop to 60Hz is noticeable.

    • +2

Is there a phone with decent battery life? I just bought an S21 FE and think maybe I should have bought an iPhone. The Android market is terrible at the moment.

      • +5

Yes, Xiaomi phones. I've owned a few, all with great battery life. Currently using the redmi note 10 pro.

        • Where do you buy them? No local sellers. I know JB Hifi stock the BlackShark but that's about all to my knowledge.

          • +1

@Mr Haj: Yes that's the downside, they are hard to get here and even when available are significantly more exepnsive than buying from overseas. You do take a bit of a chance with warranty. I think I bought it from an Aliexpress seller but am not sure. I've also used Geekbuying before with no issues.

I got the redmi note 10 pro for about $360 delivered when it launched around 18 months ago. Fantastic phone for the price. Previously owned redmi note 3 and 5 which were also excellent. The 5 still works fine and is in my bedroom drawer in case ever needed as a backup.

        • Not with Mi 4c. Terrible battery life, and the battery degrades badly.

          • @netsurfer: I'm not familiar with that phone but all the Xiaomis I've owned have had good batteries. Everyone else in my house has iphones and when we're on holiday and out all day taking photos etc they are always moaning about their batteries running down when I still have loads of charge left.

        • How's SOT?

          • +1

@Fobsessive: Mines been hovering around 3-4 hours with Ambient display on; closer to 5 hours with it turned off. Overall the battery is a let down so far, only turning off 5G and Ambient display seems to help a little.

            • @Shak2093: That is a let down

              • +1

@Fobsessive: Tell me about it. After a full 24 hours of trying it with and without the 5G+Ambient its almost 2 hours difference in SOT which is definitely not acceptable in my opinion. All in all im happy with the phone seeing as i came from a Pixel 5, but its got nothing on the 6/6Pro. The only real reason this is in the 'Pixel 6' family is purely the design (and Tensor) which tbh actually feels more robust than the 6/6Pro.

                • @Shak2093: Maybe it'll be a lot better on: low brightness, airplane mode and wifi.

      • +4

My partner's nearly 3 year old Huawei P30 still lasts for more than a day. THAT was a really good phone.

        • That was the phone that I had. It started slowing down (but was still very much useable) so I replaced it :(

        • +1

I had a mid range Huawei a few years ago, excellent phone.

        • I'm still using the Mate 20 pro which is 4 years old, replaced the battery once as it degraded around the 3 year mark. Still works beautifully and yet to find a new phone which matches it.

Realise that there's too many things I'd have to compromise, for example, the IR blaster!

          • +1

@wearytraveller: Mate 10 here 4 years old still going strong, light/medium use lasts 2 days.

        • +2

Still using my P30. I feel no need to upgrade. Still feels fast, good battery, great screen and it's not a surfboard like lots of the current options.

      • +1

Basically nothing with the SD888 / SD8Gen1 and equivalent Exynos SOCs will give you good battery life. Plenty of mid rangers have amazing battery life, as do some of the phones with the SD845 and earlier.

      • +1

s22+ does a decent job without being too bulky, anything smaller than around 4400mah should be passed on
Having said that i'm amazed the poor battery life of the pixel, the tensor chip must be really power hungry.

      • Interestingly enough… The S20 FE (with Snapdragon 865, so the 2021 4G and any 5G variant).

      • I was looking at the FE. Whats the go with the battery, how long is it lasting?

    • That's horrendous about the battery life. I have an older Moto G model and with very heavy use I'm about 30% left at the end of a day…

      • +1

I am SO disapointed about the battery life. Looking for something to upgrade my Moto E7 Power to. It sucks at pretty much everything EXCEPT tha battery life, which is absolutely fantastic.

        • +2

If you want amazing battery life look at the Xperia 10 iv, it is one of the best battery life phones ever released.

It's a mid ranger, can't do 4K video recording, and the camera isn't that good, but battery life is unmatched.

You'd have to import it though.

    • +5

A73 and A53 are battery life champs. They also both have 120hz.

      • +3

        big phones :(

        • +3

My A53 has great battery life and a very good screen. Everything else (software, lag, camera quality) is pretty disappointing TBH.

    • +8

Guess I'll stick with my Pixel 3 for a little longer

      • I have one as well. Would you replace the battery or wait for that pixel 7?

        • +1

Id wait to see what 7 brings in terms of optimisation. Theres some interesting features of 6 but honestly felt too first gen device which 7 will hopefully address.

Unless your phone battery is literally on its last legs a couple of months til 7 launch should give you a good indicator if 7 is worth it.

        • +1

I personally wouldn't bother. I upgrade my phone when it's on its last legs. Luckily I don't require much from my phone so I can get away with buying a much older model. I do appreciate a decent camera which is why I love the Pixel line. The free original quality back ups was amazing while it lasted, but at least it still has free storage saver quality back ups.

    • +2

So 5a is more like a downgrade. My Pixel 4a last 3 days and the rear fingerprint sensor works great.

    • +2

Are you using your phone 24/7? I have the 6a and it is the best battery I've had in a phone ever. I use like 12% in a day of mixed use. Also, the fingerprint sensor is super solid, especially on Android 13

      • You're having the experience I wanted! I do browse the net relatively frequently, but nothing resource-intensive like games or videos. Definitely not enough to see the battery drain faster than my 2 year old Oppo!

Edit I'm still on Android 12, I'll update it now and see if that addresses the issues I've got

      • +3

Without knowing what phones you've had this means nothing. The 6A, compared to the rest of the market, has below average battery life. The phone it replaces has significantly better battery life for example:

        https://www.gsmarena.com/battery-test.php3

        Pixel 5a: 122h
        Pixel 6a: 94h

The 5a was one of the best battery life phones around, whereas the iPhone 11 at nearly 3 years old has the same battery life as the 6a while being a significantly better phone.

      • The benchmark for phones (at least for Android) is SOT. So what's your SOT? 3O minutes?

    • +1

I also got my phone a couple weeks ago. The battery does suck at the beginning, but I can see it gradually improve day by day, wondering if it's due to the "Adaptive Battery", but then I also stop a lot of apps running in the background. Agree on the fingerprint sensor, mine does not work 60% of the time. Have yet to try without a screen protector thou.

    • +1

Thought I'd share a quick update after upgrading to Android 13 - there appears to be an immediate improvement in fingerprint recognition, which is fantastic. No idea why Android 12 was so awful, but I hope this addresses the problem.

Can't comment on battery life yet, but at least one of these issues was resolved by the latest OS!

  • Is this a good upgrade from the 4a?

    • +2

I traded in my 4a with the JB bonus $250 a few weeks ago and reckon it's a good value upgrade.

Body and screen wise, it's a tiny bit larger in size but the complaints others have made about 1080p and 60Hz won't matter as the 4a is the same so not noticeable change at all.
The back of the phone has a big chunky camera bar so it is not flat. Not an issue for most people as they will use a case but if you don't, it might be an problem.
I don't really use the camera's so can't comment on how good they are but the addition of the ultra wide second lens on the 6a I guess is a good thing.

The finger print sensor is my sole complaint - the back of phone one on the 4a is far superior.
I have read lots of complaints about battery life but as someone who habitually plugs in my phone before bed, I haven't noticed any issues but YMMV.

    • +1

Only if you really care about android version updates really, as this will get 2 more. It's got a more powerful chip, but it's a dumpster fire in terms of overheating and reception. It's got the exact same camera. It's got better battery life, but that's only until it starts overheating or has reception issues at which time battery goes down the drain.

    • Thanks for your feedback. I will hold onto my 4a for a while longer.

  • +2

So I understand this is indeed cheaper than whatever more expensive model they're also offering, but who is the target audience for "purse strings are a bit tight so rather than spending $1000 on a phone I'll spend $600"?

I've stuck to phones around the $300 mark and even that makes me wince when I'm forced to buy a new one

    • +13

I will never spend $1k on a phone, no matter what the purse strings are looking like. I guess I'm the $450 to $600 demographic.

      • +2

With you there… I'd consider the $700-750 mark if it's a flagship… But can't ever bring myself to spend 1k+ on a phone regardless of the brand. On a 4a 5g at the moment and don't see any point in upgrading any time soon…

      • -1

You will however spend more than 2k on phones over your life -

        • maybe even have already

    • +2

      There's a whole mid-range market

    • +1

I'm in the $1K phone for $600 demographic. JB trade in with launch bonuses ;)

      • haha you found a phone they were willing to give you trade in for?

  • This is so annoying… i bought it for $749 last week from JB….

    • I bought one for my wife's birthday ($650) in a few weeks.
It's still wrapped and has already depreciated, haha.

    • +3

Don't they have 2 week price guaranty?

Does JB Hi-Fi have a Price Adjustment Policy?
Price adjustment is a policy designed to refund the difference in price if an item you purchased goes on sale within a certain timeframe after your purchase.

At JB Hi-Fi, they want you to feel confident in the price you paid for your products, so they offer a price adjustment policy on most items if prices go down within 14 days of your original purchase.

    • What Mac said.

  • It looks like the office works pixel 6a comes with a charger? "Charging via the included USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 1 cable."

Is that right? Surprised since my understanding was the jb hifi one didn't have a charger

    • +7

Comes with a cable, but no wall brick.

      • Can you mix and match charger blocks? I thought you'd need to have one with the right fast charging system, and wattage, etc for that phone?

  • +3

interesting that I haven't experienced the issues others mentioned

fingerprint sensor works 99% of the time

    camera is good

    battery life is good

    screen is good

and my previous phone was S21+. bought 6a because S21+ was a bit too large and heavy. 6a isn't a single bit slower, and doesn't feel like a downgrade (apart from missing a telephoto lens, but I don't miss it much)
