As the spring season is progressing was looking for something to renew our old grass And gives our new lawn a fresh and healthy look .was looking for a lawn sacrificer and Ryobi was showing as $349 in Bunnings and did a bit of research and also found this one Masport 42V/900W Energy Flex Cordless Scarifier At catch .com which was selling a bit cheaper for $259.35 and the currently the same one is selling in mitre 10 for $519 and some places like eBay about $461.75.

Also looked for a hire option and most of the people were taking a hire fee of $50 per day so if you were to hire it 5 times it will be equivalent to owing the new one . Happy ozbargaining

  • Did you end up buying this?

The charger will cost you another $69 and the battery is $199.
    you end up paying $527.35+shipping
which is very expensive when ryobi is only $329 with battery and charger included.

I picked up my Bosch CityMower 18 Cordless Brushless 18V with battery and charger kit for $193.93 on Amazon 2 weeks ago.

Mate the one you linked is a lawn mower not sacrificer for your reference it’s $349 skin only in Bunnings

If you are already in the Ryobi ecosystem, then $349 is a good price.

        • But he can argue that if you already in Masport ecosystem, then its $259 for the mower.. You have to compare apple to apple. Plus 42V vs 18V.

The Ryobi with battery and charger included is the 36V version, which is $549.

Please note: Grass collection bag not included.
    What?

    • -2

      yep, another cost!

      • +4

the cuttings definitely wont fit in a single bag

Scarifiers never have bags, otherwise you'd be filling them up every couple of metres. You do your whole lawn then bring a couple of trailers for the clippings. You'll be amazed how much dead thatch comes out of your lawn.

If the lawn hasn't been scarified in a long time, it's not unusual to pull 1T of waste out of 100sqm. There's no point putting a bag on it really, either rake it up or go over it with the rotary mower which should hopefully have a decent size catcher on it

was looking for a lawn sacrificer

    Concrete?

    • +1

      And paint it green!

    • -1

Concrete maaate, I'm guess you're in Coburgistan. Where a hose is the new mower.

      • +1

Living there sounds like a sacrifice in itself

  • Waiting for a good 4 stroke to go in sale

    • wouldn’t hiring one be the go?

      • Hmmm, why how much are they to hire for a day, if a good one is like $10 then might be worth it

  • I'd be really tempted to go corded on one of these rather than battery.

More power for same money, but you do need power and a long cord

https://www.sawmi.com.au/ looked pretty interesting at 349

Would be interested if anyone has tried one, looks like they hire them out in Adelaide

I wouldn't think that there's be much use for this for most people. All it does by what i can see is it slices up the top of the grass instead of neatly cutting it like a lawn mower does.

More and more people are understanding what it takes to actually care for a lawn properly these days, the Ryobi one sold like hotcakes last year.
It does the opposite of what you're thinking, it pulls all the dead material or thatch out from under the grass blades. Completely different purpose to a mower.

Also looked for a hire option and most of the people were taking a hire fee of $50 per day

People seem to do this with the Ryobi but it generally includes a swag of batteries which would be worth more than the skin.
If you're going to hire one, hire a decent petrol one. Can get commercial units like Mowmaster for about $150-200/day, these are a $5-6k machine that will do a much better job than the light battery powered ones.

    • I was honestly suprised at how well the ryobi one did for what it is, went 3rds hiring a one for $50 off marketplace. The one we hired came with some cheaper no name brand batteries and a charger

      • Just don't know what to do with all the thatch that will get pulled up. Got it done professionally a few years ago and pulled out a truck load

        • Yeah its unreal how much comes up. I used it for mulch in the garden and in my compost bins and the rest went in the green waste bin

This one's not bad if you don't mind a cord.

  • How often you meant to use this Scarifier? And do you still need a mower to use afterward to collect the grass or in between? I have not heard of this concept before.

    • This is usually done as an annual maintenance
