  • I've got a nighthawk wifi 6 router. Would these work with this? Or does the mesh system work as a standalone and just biff the old router?

    • In most cases the TP-Link Deco replaces your Netgear Nighthawk. This means the Deco gets configured as the router and runs the Wi-Fi.

If you need to use the router on the Nighthawk for a specific reason configure the Deco as Wi-Fi access points. This means the Deco router is off and is only running the Wi-Fi. If you do this the Nighthawk Wi-Fi gets turned off.

      • Can we integrate TP-Link Deco with Telstra Smart gen 2 modem?

        • +1

There are many different setups. Do you have FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP, HFC, Fixed Wireless? Do you use Telstra's landline phone service and 4G failover when there is an nbn outage?

          • @Twix: Sorry forgot to mention. I have more telecom FTTN NBN 100/20 plan for a single storey house.I am using tesltra smart gen 2 modem with more nbn connection (got this modem previuosly from telstra, before i switched to more nbn plan) and I dont have telstra landline. So will this deco works with this modem?

            • +1

              @toyapple9: TP-Link Deco can be used with the Telstra SM G2. For FTTN choose one of these setups;

              1. Bridge the Telstra SM G2. Configure the Deco as the router and Wi-Fi.

              2. Don't make any changes to the Telstra SM G2 and configure the Deco as Wi-Fi access points.

What’s the difference between Access Point mode and Router mode on the Deco?

              • @Twix: From above comparison link, looks like option 1 bridging the telstra SM G2 is better option than option 2 because you are not loosing the features like parent control, homeshield etc..but do you know how to do the option 1..Is there any guide link you can share pls ?

Also, should I buy this or any other Best Modem/Router combo out at the moment. I was thinking if TP-LINK AX5400 VDSL Whole Home Mesh WiFi 6 Modem Router (DECO-X73-DSL) is better option if I just replace the Tesltra SM G2 modem itself? pls advise. Thanks

      • If you need to use the router on the Nighthawk for a specific reason configure the Deco as Wi-Fi access points. This means the Deco router is off and is only running the Wi-Fi. If you do this the Nighthawk Wi-Fi gets turned off.

Is this scenario, do all the Deco units need to be connected via ethernet back to the Netgear router?

        • +2

No, can use any combination of wired/wireless, and change the combination any time.

  • It is only a router and you might need to use your supplied modem depending on which NBN service you have but not sure whether it will work with another router like nighthawk wifi 6 router.

  • Will they work with existing deco M5? Will that be a downgrade and only slower speed achieved if mixed with M5?

    • Would like to know as well.

    • +3

Mixing Deco's is allowed. Put the X55 as your main, followed by another X55 and any M5 go last. When connected to the X55 your speeds will be faster on Wi-Fi 6 assuming your phone, laptop and so on has Wi-Fi 6. When connected to the M5 your speeds will be the same as now.

    • Any tp link deco model works with another deco model, I would have you main connection (to your server provider modem) as the x55 because it’s 5Ghz connection is 2402mbps and 2.4ghz connection is 574mbps vs the m5 5Ghz 867mbps and 2.4ghz 400mbps.

      • How is the reception on this? I have a bit of a problem with my iot devices accessing my M5. What this help at all or is the problem the iot device side?

They are all on the 2.4ghz band anyway. What example I have a power plug behind my fridge and it cannot talk frequently to the M5 which is 4 m away in the cupboard. I mean it updates every 10 minutes instead of another one which will update every minute

        • +1

Are you sure the power plug doesn't have any issues? Otherwise maybe other factors are impacting it like interference from kitchen appliances

          • @Ibz: yeah tried moving plugs around. Whichever behind fridge was intermittent. So was the dishwasher one (plug under sink)
Made no sense, the dishwasher would update every min for 5min, then stop for 15min, then 30min, then every min again.

    • Change M5 to sub and X55 for main.

  • What’s the main difference between this and the other deco deal from earlier?

    • +1

I think this has 2xMiMo instead of 1x

And also it has some AI stuff that might be garbage or might help it target better.

    • +1

This also has 3 gigabit Ethernet ports the other has 2.. One thing I love about my Netgear RB50 is the 4 Ethernet ports so if I ever upgrade I'd want something similar.

  • -2

Would it work with deco m5 mesh?

  • Guys asking compatibility with other Decos, PLEASE read the post by Twix above, jeez…

  • Does this model have the security features built in unlike the other model that is discounted? apparently you need to get a subscription for security services on the other model

    • +2

AFAIK, you need subscription for advanced security features with all Decos.

  • -5

Can it be combined with existing deco m5 ?

  • What the difference between this and the x60? Is the 60 newer and more powerful. I got the netgear Orbi mesh wifi 6 and they stuck, and wanting to change.

  • +1

difference between this and Netgear Orbi?

    • +1

Which Orbi model? Orbi range is around $300-$2700, so their functions and capabilities can vary a lot between cheaper and expensive models.

  • So I can use this as my only connection to the NBN connection box (HFC)?

    • +2

Yep plug in the Deco to the nbn NTD.

  • Hey guys, will this work with 5G home router?

    • +2

It will work with any router (as long as it has an Ethernet port.)

    • Deco have a 4G Cat 6 model which can integrate with these FYI.

  • Would this replace a vdsl2 modem, or would need to plug the modem into this? Thanks!

    • You need to plug in the nbn modem into this one

    • +2

This is not a modem and router combo. Its a router only, So you will need your vdsl2 modem to plug with this deco router in your case.

    • Deco have a VDSL model, I installed one once and the DSL connection was great to setup but for some unknown reason the WiFi range was far inferior to other Deco models, hopefully they've got them performing better now.

      • hey mate, are you referring to the this modem/router of deco TP-LINK AX5400 VDSL Whole Home Mesh WiFi 6 Modem Router (DECO-X73-DSL) ? Looking for some reviews for this one before I decide should I go for Deco X73 or Deco X55+ Tesltra SM gen2 modem combo..

        • +1

I was talking about the X20-DSL, I didn't actually know about the X73-DSL until you just mentioned it but I don't have many use cases for their higher end models, if people want more performance I usually, but not always, go Ubiquiti.

I installed the X20-DSL when it was very new and the WiFi range was abysmal compared to what I was used to seeing, I had to put in a second X20 that would have covered the house by itself.

I hope that it was an early firmware issue but I don't want to run into it again so I usually install Decos on top of ISP routers for FTTN connections now unless people really don't want the clutter.

I will say that the Deco DSL connection was very easy to set up, it was mostly automated.

  • This or the X20?

    • This is $30 more, save money and get X20.
      Kidding! Get this.

  • Bought this for $259 during prime day and it has been amazing for us. Every inch of my place gets the maximum speed and coverage. Basic parental control (that are free) are ok too which was my main reason to get into Deco

  • Does anyone know how this compares to the ASUS ZenWiFi AX XT8?

  • Is this overkill for a small 2 bedder house or should I just get one of the other routers on sale right now?

  • 3-pack is still available discounted, although it's been cheaper.

  • Out of stock again for 2 pack
