my last ones from amazon uk (this week) just came shipped in a paper bag, not even padded.

    • same from amazon uk, i sent 2 HDs back, wouldn't risk it. if buyers can wait for amazon US or AUS then pls do. I have no idea what amazon UK is thinking

      • im running full diagnostics at the moment.

        • Hi, what software are you using to do these diagnostic? I have recently got one and want to do the same

My 2 internal hard drives came in a box with no protection at all from amazon US -

        • yeah ive definitely heard that from the US site as well as newegg.

        • -2

          Impossible as this is encased.

      • +3

Are you talking about bare drives or external drives? I don't think it's really necessary to have that much protection for external drives that are already well packaged inside their own box.

It the same for Amazon US via AU as well (at least back in 2020).

Mine arrived in a big box with NO padding, which result in the box being beaten on every corner. Here’s a picture

        • That's pretty bad. I've had a few shipped just in the retail box and plastic wrap with less damage than that.

        • You also have to be careful as to what is shipping at the same time, even in different orders

I ordered an expensive double vinyl album last week from Amazon AU. My subscription for the 12x1.1L Schweppes Ginger Ale that comes in a 15kg box happened to be coming due around the same time. Guess what they did?

Yes, they put them both into a much larger box loosely with only a scrunched up piece of brown paper tossed in as well. The vinyl was cracked, scratched and warped, as you can imagine. No wonder Amazon has such good returns - they need them.

i bought 2 and they both came in a larger box.

      • +1

i bought 2 also.. last time i bought them was maybe 2020 and they came in a box, no idea.

    • Mines comes with a proper Amazon box though, I guess YMMV.

    • Mine was shipped with a sticker on the retail box. Tested fine fortunately. At least the retail box has some protection unlike bare drives in the box.

    $24.33/TB

I'd still be holding for <$400 on Black/Cyber days unless you desperately needed it now.

    • Same here. Been keeping an eye on the price after “missing out” on the Prime Day Sale.

      • I bought one in the prime deal, but that had to go into my parity, was going to turn a parity 10TB into the pool to get more space. However, I then had a 10TB failure, so ended up with no more space.

Yep hard to justify after that last sale. Probably half of OzB holding out for this lol

GBP to AUD exchange rate has fallen significantly since Russia invaded Ukraine because markets are risk adverse. Based on this the price of Amazon UK products may fall further, but currency markets are decidedly unpredictable.

  • Is this suited for surveillance camera footage storage?

    • I wouldn't. There are CCTV specific drives that WD and Seagate sell. Depending on the price I would get smaller drives and possible a second as a backup.

    • If you want to crack it out of its case and risk voiding the warranty, sure. No reason any WD drive cant be used in a CCTV box.

Most CCTV probably record regularly. Often enough that the drive isnt spinning down too often. Which should mean it lasts years.

Couldn't resist this, nice price for an 18tb. I slightly prefer HC550 to Exos for a few reasons. Of course it's a minor punt whether you actually get an Ultrastar or equivalent but it appears that way. Only 2 year warranty and after shucking 0 probably, however your odds of failure are only 0.35% per year so a good bet. Can give it a good test before shucking, then if it passes you should be in good shape.

If you install it in a PC put it right in front of a fan. This is the key to longevity in my experience.

Noise would be the key differentiator for me. Exos drives are loud AF.

Why can't they offer this deal on amazon au :(

  • Received it, and it does contain the WD180EDGZ so it's good news. Running like a train on USB3. I'll give it a slog for a couple of days before I shuck and install it in a PC.

Update - was getting hot up to 46c when working for hours so decided to shuck it now.
Didn't boot up, so I used a molex to Sata adaptor to power it (3rd pin disable issue) and is all good. In PC and great now.

    • How was the Amazon delivery parcel?

In a box or brown paper bag?

      • Yes just the paper bag. Luckily the WD box itself has decent packaging, and when you shuck it you'll see inside it sits in 4 large rubber holders as well. So much prefer this for that reason than a bare disk from Amazon.

Stable on 31c inside PC now. I don't think those enclosures are made for 24/7 or hours of heavy use.

        • If you are using them for any length of time I would use a USB fan to blow air into the enclosure.

      • $384.43 is lowest it's been so far, might come down to this price for black friday

        • Yep, holding out for <$400. We're getting closer.
