Not near the quality of Mutti tomatoes.

I agree. Not to say that the Aldi ones are bad but these are better. 70 cents is a great price for these

        • Are mutti tomatoes really better though? I honestly think the coles brand diced Italian tomatoes make a better Napoli sauce than mutti. Mutti def has less odd bits (like where the stem connects to the tomato, Coles brand has some of those bits), but I don't think the flavour is as rich.

…and Aldi stores suck, I feel like a rat in a maze in there.

This just in, Aldi sells poorer quality product for less money, more to follow in your nightly news at 6.

It's the only brand I use now, Open to other suggestions, but I yet to try better quality sauces and tinned tomatoes.

    • The only thing better is, maybe, Muir Glen and Cento. But you can only buy them from Amazon imported via the US and it's about $4 for an 800g tin. And I'm not sure if it's actually better or just my memory, but I definitely don't bother with anything but Mutti now.

I used to be all about buying from Australian farmers but Ardmano I gave up on. Crap tomatoes, bad price, just can't compete. I don't even buy fresh cherry tomatoes anymore when cooking, if the recipe needs them I buy a can of the mutti tinned cherry tomatoes.

      • Cento is a popular choice with chefs, also Solania, but that only come in a 2.5 kg tin!

    • Coles have just started stocking Napolina, they are up there with Mutti in my past experience living overseas. Cirio can be found at local markets/mediterranean food shops and they're of good quality as well.

      • Coles have started selling Italian made but home brand.. Don't taste as good as mutti though

Our family has two go-to brands: Mutti and La Gina.

Mutti are about the "cleanest" (untainted) tinned tomatoes I've every tasted, really sweet and lovely. But La Gina (whole, peeled) tend to be the most rich/intense flavoured, and seem better suited to bolder flavoured dishes (stews, bolognese sauce, etc), while still not having any of that kinda "off", almost rotten-ey aftertaste that many of the other brands have.

We keep both in the cupboard. Also, for what it's worth, have heard journalist Paul Bongiorno say that his (Italian) family prefers La Gina over brands.

Sounds a bit like our family.

We use Mutti tinned tomatoes and La Gina Passata.

La Gina Passata for bolognese and is cracking value everyday.

  • Such a great deal, pity only SA

  • Can anyone confirm if any other Foodlands have this?

    • $4 for 750g Nutella is crazy!

    • Amazing prices for an superior store. Love their in house restaurant, coffee and flower bar.

      • Find Pasadena way too cramped. They've tried to chuck too much extra in the store which then gets people to linger around.

  • Brilliant, thanks OP. Remember to stack this with a free piano concert to really make a day of it if you are visiting Frewville!

    • The viet rolls from the bakery in that complex aren't bad too. Bit light on the toppings but tasty

      • For me these days it's Hanson Rd or its nothing! Nhu Lan is my favourite, they are on Franklin St in the city too.

  • wow what a deal, wish I were in SA!

  • Mama Mia!
