  • Will this support a 4G/5G dongle? Looking to do a mobile setup in a campervan for remote net access/work.

There are no 5G dongles that I know of. It will support a 4G dongle plugged into its USB port, if you can find anyone still selling 4G dongles. That port will also support tethering to a mobile phone, and charge it through that connection. So a 5G phone will work like a 5G dongle would, if there was such a thing.

GL-iNet travel routers are a way to do what you want. And they do it well. But you could do it cheaper than a Slate AX with a TP-Link TL-WR902AC travel router. Or if you want all the features of a Slate AX, but don't need the speed, you could look at one of the cheaper similar products from GL.iNet.

Whichever you get, the easiest 4G USB dongle to get working is the Huawei E3372H. But if its not one supplied by and already set up by the carrier you intend using, plug it into a PC, set it up using the software it installs, make sure its working, then unplug it and plug it into the travel router. H model Huawei dongles actually connect to whatever they are plugged into using TCP/IP over USB, not by pretending to be a COM port.

In fact you might be able to do the job you want to do with a Huawei E8372H, which is an E3372H with built in wifi. You just need to configure it on a PC, same as a E3372H, then plug it into something that can supply it with USB power. But if you do that you only have wifi, not any ethernet ports, and you may as well use a mobile wifi instead. It would have its own battery. And you can get them in 5G.

      • Cool. Thanks for the info mate.

Yes - not going into as much detail as the other reply, but I used a Huawei 4g dongle with this same router easily.

But having said that, I don't think any 4G thumbstick type dongle is going to perform great. If you need higher download speeds/bandwidth, I would suggest getting a device that supports carrier aggregation.

After specifically buying a 4g Huawei dongle to use with this travel router, I was a bit disappointed with the download speeds and ended up buying a 2nd hand Netgear Nighthawk M1 for a bit over $100, which performed much better and easily tethered to the router via USB.

Does it come in any other colours?

    • No. Its a slate-coloured Slate, or nothing.

        • That's an Opal. But I don't think they understand what colour opals are.

          • @GordonD: There's also a blue one…

            • @jv: All different models. But the Slate, Slate Plus and Slate AX only come in slate.

      Shocking…

  • It sounds dumb, but can I pair this to my nas and portforward using existing wifi network?

    • You mean use as a wired-wireless? You should be able to do that purely with WDS or with port forwarding as you said but I don't know why you'd do that when you could just put your NAS next to your router and hardwire it.

I had this router but it was extremely buggy and half the features didn't work. Not sure if it's fixed now but it was a hot mess.

      • Alright, never mind then.

  • That's the cutest router I've ever seen! 😊

  • Ah missed out, any idea when will it be discounted again?
