I know 5s has been out for a while and 6 out recently, but for this price I think it's a good deal.

  • Volte issue been fixed for Optus or other carriers in Australia?

  • This item is located outside Australia
    Worries me a bit

Well, this is a grey import after all. These normally go for over $1k even on sale if you buy Aus local stock.

I have been buying many phones that are coming from HK, no issues so far.

    • +1

      Valid worry.
The ROG 5 has a widespread issue with a defective motherboard from factory.
It happened to me, I have a Hong Kong version, and it had to go back to CHINA for repairs. Really shitty situation given the lockdowns over there. Repairs took more than 3 months - each city it passed through on road freight back to the factory locked down WHILE my phone was in that city. When it finally got to the factory it was fixed in under a week. Even the replacement mainboard may still be at risk of the defect hahaha I'm not looking forward to sending it back to China again.

Assuming you never have to send it for RMA, it's a fantastic phone.

  • Seems there's an Android 12 update. Apparently it should get the Android 13 update some time late 2021/early 2022 but I can't find an official statement on it.

Doesn't the SD888 SoC run hot generally, and therefore affect performance due to the heat?

    • +1

This has the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, not the 888. But yes, the SD8G1 has been shown to run pretty hot on other devices.

    • +1

If you want to make full use, it's best to use it with the optional cooler. It will run much faster with the high level of sustained performance.

    • -3

Yeah runs hot but so what ? Not an issue unless you are trying to charge the phone.

      • Or play games on something that is called ASUS ROG (Republic of Gamers). Higher temps cause devices to reduce chip speeds lowering chip performance, potentially affecting how games perform on it.

Nice phone, it's a shame the cameras are not the best…

I always recommend looking for a Google Camera build as the quality of the photos will improve so much thanks to all the work Google put into their software.

    • It came 4th in the MKBHD blind camera test, not bad considering it's not intended to be a camera phone.
Realistic colors and not the dumb oversaturation of Apple etc.

If you're recording video, it's really good at isolating audio of whoever's speaking, too.
And its image-stabilization even compares well against the Vivo X-series and their physical gimbals.

I don't think any criticism against the ROG 5's camera setup is valid tbh

  • For anyone that have this phone, how is the 6000 mAh battery? Just wondering if the chip is power hungry and whether last about the same as Samsung S20 Plus.

  • is this a good phone? trying to upgrade from Realme 6

I've had one for about 6 months. Very good phone up there with all the other flagships and even better in in some aspects but it has some negatives. The worst by far is the fingerprint sensor. Sometimes it just does not work and fails to recognize my fingerprint, you can kind of fix the issue by removing the screen protector but that's not a risk I'm willing to take. The from factory screen protector is dogsh*t by the way, your finger doesn't slide. Need to replace it ASAP. The headphone jack sometimes randomly produces a really loud static. Kind of scary. Otherwise the headphone jack is incredible when it comes to audio quality, it destroys any other flagship that isn't an LG. The phone is heavy and bulky as hell. Lastly the camera does not compete with other flagships but with some tweaking of the settings and knowing it's downsides it is passable as a decent camera. If you can put up with those issues its an incredible phone

    • I had one for 6 months,
same complaint about the fingerprint sensor, I had no complaints about the headphone jack.
Battery life and gaming performance are good, software features are really great too.
However, I have a Hong Kong version and when it crapped out (defective mainboard, widespread issue, RMA is free) it had to go back to CHINA for repairs. Really shitty situation given the lockdowns over there. Repairs took more than 3 months - each city it passed through on road freight back to the factory locked down WHILE my phone was in that city. Would get the legion y90, has all that built in and with faster CPU, and larger screen.

Ui's probably a minus copared to Asus, but you cannot go wrong on either on price as you'll be tinkering on both phones anyways.

  • Looks like 128GB version has been ozbargained, 256GB models still available.

  • I've repaired my lg v50 3 months ago, otherwise I'll totally buy this.

Had this phone before, the camera is atrocious.

JerryRigEverything also has a video on YouTube showing the durability is pretty bad.

The side USB C (which was handy) stopped working only a few months in… among other issues.

Honestly wouldn't recommend even though really wanted to like it.

    • +1

Moving forward all companies that will be copying this 2 battery design (and they will believe me) will have the same durability issue with a weakness in the centre of the phone. There is no way around it. The pros vastly outweigh the negatives of it.

    • Agree that this is the kind of phone that snaps in half if mistreated.
I can't imagine a situation in which my phone would be mistreated that way though.
In particular, you probably want to be using this phone with its Nintendo Switch-like phone case, which would obviously reinforce its rigidity.

Regarding camera: It came 4th in the MKBHD blind camera test, not bad considering it's not intended to be a camera phone.
Realistic colors and not the dumb oversaturation of Apple etc.
