Amazon are price matching David Jones

Just bought one in store and paid $31.50 as they had a 10% off promo that stacked.

      • Whats the 10% Promo mate ?

        • I didn’t see the specific one in store but I did see others (10% off toys or clothes, etc) and when I paid it came to $31.50. I checked the receipt and it just says “promotional offer -$3.50”

i'd wait for a fire stick deal since they all come with remotes

    • +5

This is a casting stick, doesn't need a remote. Chromecast with Google TV comes with a remote.

    • +1

I'd get (and have) the Chromecast with Google TV, much better.. and don't need to cast as such as it's a streaming device. Good having a remote.

Integrates well plugged into HDMI in soundbar with TV using arc. Dolby Atmos and 4k works a treat

  • Anyone know if this needs to be connected to wifi to work? Or can you just stream straight from your device without any network?

Looking for something easy for when travelling to just plug into the tv, but don't really want to have to add the hotels wifi to the device each time.

I have a Firestick max or Google tv i was going to take to use for this purpose, but maybe this will be easier?

    • +4

      yes, needs internet/wifi.

Best to use something like a mango - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/brand/gl-inet1

      • Cheers. This is helpful.

        • you carry your wifi with you so all your devices are pre configured for your wifi/router.

          • @figlia: Wouldn't a simple HDMI cable fix that. That's all I ever carry with my Laptop when travelling…

    • +3

Needs the wifi. It doesn't steam from the device. The phone tells it what to steam and the device then uses the wifi to stream it.

    • +2

As others have said, it does need WiFi.
I just got one of these for the same purpose - traveling and having access to shows on dodgy old hotel TVs.
I'm going to use my mobile data as the WiFi source. Just hotspot and off I go.

      • +4

Heads up, if you're planning to use mobile data / hotspot, then you need an extra device to then control / cast from. Not a problem if you have a travel buddy or multiple devices. It was a mess of a time once when I was stuck with only 1 device i.e. the hotspot.

        • I actually wondered about that after I posted, so thanks!
Yeah we usually use an iPad or someone else's phone to do the actual casting. Good catch though!

    • +3

Most importantly it likely wouldn't work on hotel WiFi as the controlling device (ie your phone) needs to be able to see the Chromecast on the local network, which most guest WiFi's (should) have deactivated.
(If local networking isn't deactivated, then you shouldn't be using the WiFi anyway.

      • +1

I for one love to network with the locals!

      • +1

Issue easily solved with a GL.inet

    • +1

You can stream from a device, I've been doing it for years as I have no home wifi.

Only drawback is I can only stream to one device at a time from one device.

      • how? without home wifi?

        • Correct, just checked, it works by setting up the Chromecast with a device, then, using that same device (in this case a Pixel 2XL) with hotspot on casting the content to a screen (in this case a movie via the Netflix app).

    • If you want to stream directly from your device, you can try the Microsoft Wireless Display Adaptor - basically plugs into a HDMI port and you can just connect to it as an external monitor from within Windows.

  • +10

Bring back the Google Chromecast Audio cowards!

    • +1

And for those who feel like me, there are some rumours we may actually get it: https://9to5google.com/2022/07/06/would-be-chromecast-audio-…

      • Still using my chromecast audio! Even though BT is available on my speakers I let my partner use BT as it's easier for her and I stream to the chromecast audio (Edifier S3000Pros) via line-in.

        • +4

You make it sound like you had to compromise when you clearly won and she doesn't even know it

          • @Voldemorts Flat Nose: Haha definitely. But don't think she cares either. :P

            • @ReaperX22: Haha this I understand. Happens everytime I have friends over on Fri/sat nights and people would rather use Bluetooth then the lossless solution I've prepared

              • @Voldemorts Flat Nose: In fairness. For a party or hang out. No one is listening critically who would realistically be able to tell the difference anyway! Most solutions are 'good enough' these days.

As someone who moved away from having a separate audio player (Cowon plenue D and Shure se535s) to Bluetooth + phone purely for convenience/no cable/one less device for my commute.. I get it. Haha.

    • I've still got two, going strong, excellent devices. Much better quality for the money than any other solution imo.

Didn't realise they'd discontinued them, did they give a reason why?

      • Honestly probably just low sales? It's kinda niche. Probably got overtaken by BT speakers in general

      • did they give a reason why?

Make more money out of nest devices because no microphone on the chromecast audio to spy on you.

The aux port is also a optical out which is the beauty of it.

        • On the hubs you can switch the microphone off for google devices I have anyway

  • +3

Since getting Google TV never getting back to Chromecast
worth the extra dollars to get Google TV IMO

    • +1

      Why?

      • +9

For some reason most people think scrolling through a gallery on the TV using a remote by pecking a button is better than navigating the same gallery on your phone by swiping your finger..
I don't get it either. But at least the Chromecast feature still works for the enlightened few.

        • +8

The main reason is that you don't have to stop what you are doing on your phone if you need to change what's being watched (Particularly if you are controlling it for kids or someone else and not actually watching what's on)

          • -3

@lateralus45: Issue with the remote is you need to program all the apps.

With casting it's straight from phone.

I'm sure most people have a spare phone to use as remote. Still

The remote is best for people not technically advanced.

            • @Stopback: Totally wrong, the Google TV is great, the remote is very handy and works straight away. The idea is so you don't have to be on your phone casting to something all the time. It's more of a media centre.

One remote to control GTV, soundbar and TV with HDMI arc. Dolby Atmos great too with the Google TV plugged straight into the q950a HDMI Port.

        • +5

The remote control works really well and has replaced my surround sound receiver remote as the primary way to adjust the audio of my TV.

For my situation where we are frequently browsing my Plex collection/streaming services with more than one person, being able to see what's available on the TV screen is so much better than crowding around a phone screen.

Casting off your phone is also frequently a little dodgy in my experience. It used to happen often where I'd try and pause the content and it either wouldn't register my input or it'd register after a long delay. The remote completely fixed these sorts of issues for me.

        • We have both, it is nicer on the tvs with them but not worth replacing the 7 or so other chromecasts we have.

      • +5

I've had both versions of Chromecast and the one with Google TV is much better and well worth the price.

The non-TV version only allows you to control it via your phone. With the Chromecast + Google TV you can still do that, however you also get a remote control which you can use to navigate through the content on your streaming platforms, switch channel inputs, turn your tv on/off, and adjust your volume. It's simply a more intuitive and nicer way to control your Chromecast.

        • Does the one with Google tv let you do basic casting?
Eg open app on phone, click cast, click play, content is on screen.
Or do you need go through setup/sign in again for every app on the Chromecast?

          • +4

@based: yes Google TV can do casting too (from mobile or chrome desktop)

            • @littlesoldier: Nice, I'd seen some comments that seemed to be saying you had to use the built in apps if they were available. Still happy with our ultra but sounds like that'll work fine if it needs replacing. The only downgrade will be the loss of Ethernet, not that that's a big deal

          • +2

@based: Yes you can still use it to cast from your phone. And i too believe Google tv chromecast is far better, turns any tv into a smart/smarter tv. I have a samsung 2021 tv and still prefer to use this, just makes tv watching easier with all the apps in one place, and continue watching section etc. Plus the small, simple remote controls my sonos surround setup too, and is easy for kids and missus to use too.

      • +4

One of the most useful usecase for Google TV is to connect it anywhere as long as there's Wifi / internet (eg. during travel)
With Google TV, you can just go to Settings and connect to any wifi network
With Chromecast, each time to connect to a new network, you will need to factory reset the chromecast
(before having Google TV, I try to have a work around by bringing my mini travel router with the pre-config wifi password)

  • Officeworks price beat?

  • 1080p only, right?

    • Yes.

      • but most of time runs at youtube just for 480p

    • 4k comes with Android 12. This would be on like Android 9?

      • No Android, it's a Chromecast. I think it runs CastOS?

        • Oh I must be thinking of the generation after.

          • @fuzor: Its the chromecast ultra perhaps.

    • And doesnt seem to support H265. A big problem if you are using Plex.

    • 3rd gen even struggles to do YouTube 1080p 60fps.

      • My first gen stutters so much just playing certain YouTube videos. So this is an upgrade at least.

  • +5

This is also a cheap solution to converting your soundbar with HDMI to a wifi speaker without the use of a tv. The same can also apply to the fire tv sticks

  • Ive had 3 of these over the years and they have all failed out of warranty just like my original generation one and the lone ultra i had. Now completely on to firesticks so hopefully better luck there.

    • +1

wow…i still use my original chromecast, dont even rmb when i got it. should be close to 10 years now.

      • +2

The US models are only just gone 9 years old.
And I reckon it was a good year before they released them anywhere else.

I'm still rocking a US purchased Gen 1 and a couple of Gen 2 as Audio adapters.

        • 8 yrs then. quite a rock solid stuff. i guess all it does is just casting lol

          • @overlook: I find my first gen stutters alot with certain YouTube videos.

      • My original one failed I believe because I was switching it between TVs many many years ago.
But all the ones I have had like in this deal just stop connecting and working. Lights are on but no longer functions. Same again with the ultra.
I switched over to firesticks and so far so good.

      • Me too.. Old one going for 8+ years.

google tv with voice control built in remote $69 is a better choice

    • +3

now i just need a deal to rent a time machine

  • Good price picked one up for the spare room.

I much prefer the Chromecast Ultra over Chromecast with Google TV.

I find it simpler not to have the on screen menus. I'm hoping my ultra never dies.

  • Heard there is gen 2 chrome cast TV is coming which still be cheaper.

  • We need to know the value of Camel so we can determine if Camel x3 is the same as camel^3

    • +2

Technically, CamelCamelCamel = Camel x Camel x Camel. Therefore, Camel^3.

  • Deal unless you don't need Bluetooth, remote with mic, app store, 4k and USB C

  • You can often find brand new sealed Google TV's on the marketplace for $50-$60… might be worth looking there first :)

  • +1

Great for streaming oculus VR, either via mobile app or PC to a TV so you can all view what the headset is displaying

  • Worth upgrading from Chromecast gen 2?

    • Same question. I bought mine a couple years ago. Must have been earlier version. Worth upgrading? Use it daily so really keen if improvement is big

  • There's a Chromecast HD coming very soon to replace this model. It's a 1080p-max version of the Google TV with remote

  • Why not buy the FireTV Max?

I believe it was 2 for $70 during the Prime Day Sale

  • +1

Beware that Google no longer supports using YouTube on this gen chromecast while being logged in. This means if you have premium, you will get served ads. You also won't be able to see 18+ content or track what you've watched. I had to buy a Google TV to avoid the above.

    https://piunikaweb.com/2022/08/26/youtube-premium-chromecast…

  • I have a chromecast for my tv as it’s not smart enough without it lol…my small white remote has stopped working , is it possible just to buy a new remote?
