And the mini has 22% off for 512 GB model. Tempted but can't fathom that price after the 12 mini on Telstra day

    • +1

That’s a pretty great price for the 512GB 13 mini.

13 mini was quite a decent improvement in batter life over the 12 mini, plus the good price then was for the miserable 64GB models.

      • +2

On Telstra day 12 mini was $769 for 128gb and $699 for 64gb

      • +1

Nahh. After buying the 12 mini at 769. This is more than 50% cost for a less than 25% better phone from the 12 mini. The economic doesn't stack. I will play the waiting game.

        • -1

12 mini 128GB is a far cry from 13 mini 512GB. The comparison doesn’t stack.

          • -1

@Mitch889: I can buy a SanDisk iflash stick for additional storage on the cheap. Use magsafe battery pack to overcome the battery weakness of the 12 mini. The only better feature is the smaller notch, brighter display and improved camera. Personally not worth the 1.3 k hole in my wallet.

People paying this much for a 1 year old iphone
    Oof

    • +5

Exactly why inflation is not just due to global factors.

      • This

      • Inflation is caused by the middle class have far too much money. Spending $2,200 on a telephone is seems incredibly wasteful to us proletariat, but it is just a day's work for a doctor/tradesman/lawyer/dentist.

        • -2

True. This isnt even a luxury spend, nobody would know it is 1tb instead of 128gb by the look. I mean this phone wouldnt even be able to give you some sort of more status over a 128gb version which is a point of a luxury item. But this one is just extremely unnecessary product to purchase.

    • +5

So long they do, prices won’t drop!

    • Check the price if the latest phone

    • +12

It's okay, this one is still good.

The current one released only days ago still doesn't have USB C or even support USB 3 over the lightning cable.
I can't wait to transfer 48MP photos and backup my phone at USB 2 speeds.

Thanks Apple, I love your support for adding modern standards at least 10-15 years after they are released.

      • +7

If you are really in Apple's full ecosystem, you wouldn't use a cable to transfer photos / files. You would use AirDrop. Once you start using AirDrop, you most likely won't care about USB 2.0. If Apple were to push for an iPhone without a lightning or USB-C port, Apple Mac users will still be fine. PC users… I am not so sure.. but does Apple really care about PC users? Sell you Macbook Pros and AirPods are more profitable than wired products.

Android's USB-C/3.2 gen 1 (if supported) is better if you want to transfer files through an USB-C cable, but the alt-mode really can get an upgrade to DP 1.4. I really want Microsoft and Android to work better together (rather than just Samsung phones).

        • +2

I find AirDrop less convenient because I need to use 2 devices.
Plug the phone in with a cable, let me use it like a USB drive and I can easily copy what I want from it and manage my files from a big screen.

AirDrop also doesn't make up for the annoyance of being in the ecosystem where not only my iPad and MacBook charger but also my friends Android phone charger and also non Apple laptop charger can charge each other but I need a completely different and special charging cable just for my iPhone that would be perfectly in the ecosystem if it wasn't for one pointless proprietary connector that nobody else uses, not even Apple on their other devices.
The lightning connector is basically an outsider to the Apple ecosystem…

          • @spaceflight: i use https://snapdrop.net/ all the time transfer file between wifi is very fast. on my xs max it is 90MB/s i am not a heavy phone user tho.

          • -4

@spaceflight: Does every single one of your non-iPhone device have USB-C port? Majority of PC cases don't have USB-C port at the front (if you want one, you generally have to pay for a more expensive case). USB-C port(s) at the back are a bit annoying. My PC case has a provision slot for that port at the front BUT the case maker doesn't sell that cable. Throw all USB-A keyboards and mice to the bin? USB-C mice and keyboards are so ubiquitous?

For iPhones, I don't really think Apple makes it super easy / intuitive for you copy photos and videos via USB cable (or you meant syncing first?).

USB-C charger with USB-C cable being so awesome, honestly, is over the top sugar-coating. Apple introduced so many USB-C chargers over time (29W, 30W, 18W, 20W, 61W, 87W, 96W, 140W). Android makers follow Apple's footstep when it comes to USB-C cables and often just include USB 2.0 cable. I have an Asus phone with Snapdragon 888 that only does USB 2.0. So many of my cheaper Android phones over the years are USB 2.0 only. Laptops, you have Apple (not enforcing e-marking in general) vs Lenovo / Dell, enforcing PD 3.0. Samsung's PPS uses / allows non-e-marked USB-C cables and Samsung sells USB 2 USB-C cables. Which Android phone makers include a proper USB 3 cable out of the box? The PD 3.1 push means I will need new cables and meters (240W USB-C meters, they will be dirt cheap?). And, it is so great to have USB-C/Alt-mode DP 1.2 dongles, DP 1.4 dongles, Thunderbolt 4 cables. The upcoming push of USB 4.0 v2 80Gbps (yup, another set of cables). DP 2.0 support is coming… so dongle set #3 coming up. Also, USB 3.2 gen 2x2 which USB 4 does NOT have to support. Since when do we all have USB-C chargers capable of PD/PDO, PD/PPS, Wrap Charging, Samsung AFC, QC2/3, Huawei SuperCharge.

USB-C is a mess. At high speed, you have a trade off of getting quality power cable vs data cable. You want quality data + quality power cables, you really need to pay more. The market is flooded with subpar cables. Apple is shrewd and its main USB-C/USB-C cable is designed for charging / power so it's USB 2.0 only.

        • You can’t use Airdrop to back up your phone to iTunes or Finder though? Either a USB cable or backup to iCloud, which costs money >5GB.

          • +1

            @Ghost47: From Apple Web site:

            Sync your content using Wi-Fi

After you've set up syncing with the Finder using USB, you can set up the Finder to sync to your device with Wi-Fi instead of USB.

            1. Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable, then open a Finder window and select your device.
            2. Select "Show this [device] when on Wi-Fi".
            3. Click Apply.

When the computer and the device are on the same Wi-Fi network, the device appears in the Finder. The device syncs automatically whenever it's plugged in to power.

Setup a new iPhone 14 Pro Max for a family member yesterday, didn't use a USB cable at all (couldn't be bothered), so put the old phone next to the new phone and get it done wirelessly.

      • Dynamic island is worth more than this.

        • Let me get this right, you want some fancy software to make up for what is more noticeable and potentially obtrusive when watching videos or playing games compared to something where, from a purely aesthetic viewpoint, the hole-punch cutout is superior because it's cleaner and easier to forget.

Compared to better hardware and connectivity that's actually more functional?

          • -1

            @spaceflight: Didn't neg you.

Samsung A52, Xiaomi Mi 12 are both USB 2.0. Even when we look at Samsung S22 Ultra, if we want 4K/60Hz output via alt-mode to an external display, the data pipe drops to USB 2.0. To be fair, Apple does the same with the latest iPad Mini so it is just as bad.

USB 3 isn't important enough to general public. Yes, we techies want it, but general public don't care. You remember how much the 1m lightning to USB-C / USB 3.0 cable cost right? I own one (and honestly, the price was a rip off). The truth is, even if Apple put USB 3 in Pro Max 14 this year, most of us still won't buy the 1TB version. On the other hand, if someone were to give you a choice of a free 1TB iPhone 14 Pro Max or a 128GB iPhone 14 Pro Max, I doubt lack of USB 2 will be an issue for you not to choose the 1TB one.

          • -1

@spaceflight: I am using 14 pro right now. Coming from standard 13, this feels totally like upgrade. The dynamic island is not obtrusive like you think. I don’t like android, the best android era were pixel 2/ Note 10. Currently, they have poor animation, bloatware software and worst battery life.

      • +1

USB 2 speeds came out in the year 2000 💀

      • even support USB 3 over the lightning cable.

While iphones don't, some ipads do support USB 3 over lightning port like my old 10.5 pro.

USB 2 over lightning is just Apple cheaping out on the controller, not a technical constraint of the lightning port.

    • +14

People paying this much for any phone. I don't quite understand it but each to their own.

      • +1

I presume cashed up and already bought everything else they want/need.

Besides YT tech channels (doing reviews of the phone), I'm not sure who really manages to get value out of a phone at this price.. maybe someone with a big IG following and they want a decent phone camera for posts plus they're embedded in the apple ecosystem, or maybe mobile game streamers..

      • You live in an incredibly wealthy society by global standards

        https://thenewdaily.com.au/finance/finance-news/2021/06/24/a…

        • +3

          Also incredibly expensive.

god damn it i am still broken af xD

          • +1

@Hornpub: There is also a huge problem with growing inequality

      • -2

You use it all day every day. Why not pay this much for what is by a lot of metrics the best phone in the world. When I was a kid people would spend a lot more than this on quality laptops.

    • +1

Forget 1 year old, so many stupid people pay this for a new phone. Apple rely on stupidity thus laughing all the way to the bank.

  • +32

Always amaze why people willing to pay APPLE a bare 15% off RRP when the new phone is out considering getting a pro or pro max is still starting around $1500?? Apple really knows how to brain wash their customers

    • +15

Not only Apple. Everything in modern west world is based on brainwashing.

      • Same as the Nokia age. Charging you a high premium for just changing the phone case color. You need a serious challenger to make apple RIP.

        • +1

There are many much better than iPhone with extra features like micro SD, USB-C 3.2, S-Pen, Fold/Flip, better lens, DeX desktop extension to large screen & many other unique features that Apple is years behind.
Just: “It's Easier to Fool People Than It Is to Convince Them That They Have Been Fooled” :( Apple is the best to sell you the sizzle without the meat.

          • @taki: And all these other companies are our friends and the good guys opposed to Apple?

            • @Mooncakes: No but apple is unrivalled in terms of convincing aka fooling their customers.

It is not justifiable to buy a phone and not being able to recharge its battery because adapter is sold seperately. No customer should even try to justify this.

          • +1

@taki: Micro SD expansion is going the way of the dodo :/ - Recent Samsung phones don't have it, and google pixels (like the iPhone) have never had it - so in that way, apple was arguably a few years ahead of everyone else (which isn't a good thing).

Not sure I understand the better lens part — Normal non-zoomed photography is more or less equal across the P6P, iP13PM, and S22U. Are you referring to the S22U's 10x optical zoom?

Also the processor in the recent iPhones is notably better than what's in android phones, while I dislike apple (& samsung, for that matter) I don't really think the last sentence is accurate.

          • @taki: Most users don't care about that stuff you've listed.. Micro SD would probably be the biggest loss.

            micro SD

Useful. Personally happy with 128gb storage. Friends with higher income just buy a higher capacity phone.

            USB-C 3.2

Great for the monthly photo backup otherwise rarely used. I actually prefer to transfer over SFTP or similar as I find MTP to be unreliable for bigger transfers.

Non-tech friends probably wouldn't know what USB 3.2 is.

            S-Pen

Niche. I really liked the feature on a previous phone, bit realised I could live without it.

            Fold/Flip

Niche and arguably immature. Screens are plastic. Most users don't care. I'd prefer a vanilla candy bar personally as there's less that can go wrong.

            better lens

iPhone's camera system is generally considered better across reviews and DXOmark.

            https://www.dxomark.com/smartphones/#sort-camera

            DeX desktop

Useful, but there are a few glitches. No-one else I know actually uses it. People are always surprised to see video output and Dex. No palm rejection so not great with touchpads.

      • I know you want to emphasise the seriousness of the situation, but everything is too much

    • +12

Not sure why you need to go straight to insults assuming anyone after a certain product is brainwashed. Assuming you are happy to pay apple an extra $250 to get the latest and greatest product which you may need?

      • +6

Probably because some think they are smart and above everyone else

    • +9

Nah, Apple no longer sells iPhone 13 Pro Max phones in their store. However, they won't take back retailers stock. Retailers will need to figure out a way to sell them.

      iPhone 14 Pro starts at $1749, not $1500. 14 Pro Max 1TB is $2769.

Apple really knows how to brain wash their customers

No, Apple is shrewd. People don't want iPhone 14 Plus, they'd rather have discounted iPhone 13 Pro Max. It's OZB, so we get lots of deals posted. It doesn't mean every deal is super bargain.

      • +3

It doesn't mean every deal is super bargain.

Exactly this, haha. I saw a lot of deals are not really…impressive but they may help people in need

    • +2

See, if I was looking for evidence of brainwashing I'd look for a group of people who sincerely believe somebody else's phones are the most expensive and that those people are easily led sheep.

      I'll just leave this here.

      • -5

The flaw of that comparison is that it doesn't include the capabilities of the phones (S20 Ultra has micro-SD & S21 Ultra has S-pen that are missing in iPhone rip-offs).
Then they don't include the much better value other Asian phones with extra capabilities.
They all try to milk the customers until they realise “It's Easier to Fool People Than It Is to Convince Them That They Have Been Fooled.” :(

        • +7

The flaw in your logic is that even the samaung ultra s22 doesnt even have a memory card.
There is a very niche segment who makes use of the spen for what it is. I have had notes since the first iteration and apart from some gimmicks never used it. Bought the asian phone for my dad and it didnt even last full year despite stellar specs on paper!
Stop copy pasting again and again samsung fan.
If the deal isn’t for you just scroll past it

        • It's Easier to Fool People Than It Is to Convince Them That They Have Been Fooled

          You don't say

    • +1

Really not worth buying a phone thats outdated and only 15% cheaper especially at this price point

    • Funny how those brainwashed Apple customers manage to earn substantially more money than smart, non-brainwashed Android fans.

      • Funny those earn substantially more money than smart, non-brainwashed Android fans will rather pay 85% price for last gen phone than getting the latest given that they earn substantially more money.

        • ☝️ he mad

          and broke

          but mostly mad

      • Sorry just to clarify, are you implying people who purchase Apple phones earn more money because they buy a higher priced item? In my personal experience, a lot of the wealthiest people I know are also the most shrewd with their money.

Also, you're on OzBargain bro. Don't pretend you're not waiting around for 18 months to get the "all time lowest price" on a 48 pack of toilet paper so that you can save an extra $0.01 after cashback.

        • No. My point was that you cannot call "brainwashed" all the smart, high earning people that buy apple

  • +1

What do people use the storage for on a phone? Most things are in the cloud these days.

    • +23

      Pictures of clouds

I have my off line music library and a bunch of movies for when I travel, adds up to about 350gb if I don't curate very carefully.

Luckily I have an Android phone with usb-c so I can put the movies on a portable ssd, but yeah it's not too hard to fill up half a terabyte pretty quickly

    • +2

Prores 4k need 256gb min for iPhone 14 pro otherwise yes I agree

    • +1

Imagine storing all the pro res stuff on the cloud, you would spend a fortune haha

    • +1

Candid Family photos, videos. Photos of vegetables. 🍆

    • +1

A few people have mentioned Pro Res video recording. To put it into perspective at 4k that uses around 6-8GB per minute of footage. Even with the 1TB storage you’re probably not getting more than 2 hours of footage.

Not that I think most people should be shooting in Pro Res.

    • A security conscious person would never store their documents. photos etc on someone else's computer…But the Cloud sounds so friendly most can't see the obvious elephant in the living room.

      • Everything is in the cloud mate even the most secure files. i.e. banking, government, research, etc

      • Well I see your concern and assume you do not use Outlook, Gmail, Amazon etc. too as they have always been in cloud since day dot! Cloud has its place and is lot more secure than our home environment unless you have a full decrypted traffic monitoring set up for every packet going in and out of your perimeter! What would I know? And you have never uploaded your CV for a job application either! You have never done a bank loan application as that all is going right into cloud wether you like it or not. I am fully agreeing with your sentiment but the bus you and we all are on is not taking us to where you/we might want to be.

    • Nudes.

  • +12

Would be the worst drinking game ever if I somebody said shots whenever one of these is mentioned under an iphone deal:

    • "people paying that much for an old phone"
    • "people paying that much for apple"
    • "people needed that much storage on their phone"
    • +4

I can accept people paying that much for apple products, but at least not an old model with 15% off. I agree they generally last longer than Android phones. Am old phone should be at least over 25-30%….15% off is for a phone released for 6 months

      • +2

Maybe for android phones, but apple phones rarely see much in the way of discount >10% for the first year

Just the way the world works 🧐

        • That's probably why people who "upgrade" their phones annually tend to pick iPhone I guess

      • I am afraid you have to accept it regardless, how can you do different?

        • -4

I am lucky, because I am always using Android and never a fan of APPLE! Brainwash is not working on me

          • -1

@JCRALLYART: Not even on me, but just because I am tight. If I see my 250 Oppo and an iPhone same year sold at the same price I am not sure I'd go with Oppo
. They'll flush people like me out of society more sooner than later

          • +7

@JCRALLYART: ‘Everyone who uses a different phone to me is brainwashed’

            Big if true.

          • @JCRALLYART: You're this close to working it out 🤏

          • @JCRALLYART: I've been using Android for years until Pixel series couldn't meet my expectations (like Pixel 3's battery sucks) and other Android phones have a much delayed OS update. Will give it a shot if Pixel 7 is impressive

      • +2

That thinking probably applies to Android but not Apple.

There are different rules for Apple products due to the way they structure their products, longevity, support, and them being a market leader. Older phones seem to become lower tier rather than becoming obsolete.

      • I agree they generally last longer than Android phones.

Yep, if ever they put back the headphone jack and allow native Firefox, I'd love to try one for this reason.

        • You can change default browser in iPhone.

          • +1

@felixyong: You can't run the full Firefox browser on iPhone.
Any non-safari browsers are just "web views" wrapped in a UI.

    • I am drunk already.

    • Rather: "people paying that much for a phone"

  • +2

apple never do discount more than 20% for the high end products for at least 3 years

    • They do it because much of their user base relies on the resale value of their phone.

      • they do it because with 10% discount stock gone empty all the time.

  • +1

At this price point you might as well just buy a new laptop lol

    • +10

And put it into my pocket?

      • +6

  • -2

Just wait 3 years and buy the iPhone 13 pro for $1000 used.

    • +3

This is a silly argument. In three years iphone will have usb c and these will drop off a cliff in modernness

      • Save $1300 this way. Plus phones have reached a point that speed does not matter.
