Will this allow unlimited photo back up to Google photos?

    • +10

      No

Keep an eye out for an OG pixel. Doesn't really matter what capacity, or if the screen is cracked or the battery is bad because it will be permanently plugged in to a charger. Set up Syncthing on the pixel and whatever phone you want to use as a daily and you get lifetime FULL resolution photo/video backups. Also since it doesn't matter what device took the photo/video, you can upload files from DSLR's (including RAW files), scanned pictures, GoPro/drone footage, and pretty much any other source you can think of.

It used to be possible to snag one for <$80 but prices seem to be creeping up now that more people have discovered it.

      • What's an OG pixel?

      • Thanks. Could you please provide some guidance how to set up auto sync to Pixel OG?

        • I used this guide to get it going for me. I've since added a folder from my PC as well to backup photos from there too

      • Yeah that's how I'm going to use my Pixel 2 XL after I get 7 pro next month. 2 XL can only upload images at compressed size but decent enough for daily life logging.

        • Try Pixel Experience Rom.

      • Can also put a custom rom on most phones that masquerades as a pixel 1. Pretty sketchy, but most custom roms do this so hopefully Google will give some kind of warning/notice to the ROM creators before they just start banning unsuspecting user accounts.

      • +1

You don't need an OG pixel, just any device that supports Pixel Experience Rom (or a similar AOSP-based phone).

I am using a Pixel 2 XL, flash with PE Rom - free original quality back up.

        • I assume pixel 2 is the cheapest to get?

        • wait really free original quality RAW backups on any pixel or android phone? how is google not able to detect that?

          • @RQNinja: They can likely detect it, but it is not significant enough of a problem to invest in a solution and support. The number of people running custom ROMs is pretty insignificant.

        • Damn, I didn't know Pixel Experience ROM offers this, even though I installed it months ago. That's why I kept back up off all the time.
I was trying to replace my OG Pixel's battery but messed up. Never had the time to reassemble it.
You guys are the real heroes.

      • +1

I've tried this on my Pixel 1 and this method is easier said than done. I ended up abandoning this method because it was a pain in the ass.

How have you set up your pixel 1?

        • +1

I replied further up with the guide I used, but before I found it I was getting confused with the correct folder order, and which was send and receive.

      • I recently picked up a pixel 1 did just this reason.

      • I have one OG pixel without a screen, can it be used with an external monitor somehow to enable this?

      • +1

        Hang on what?!

        Am I missing something?

I have a pixel 3a and I have unlimited photo backup to Google photos. Are you telling me 6a doesn't?

        • +1

Pixel 5 was the last one.

        • +1

Not sure about the 6a, but the pixel 1 has unlimited FULL RESOLUTION backups for life. As far as I know, every model after is unlimited COMPRESSED backups.

          • @ebosh: to average joe, is that enough?

            Either way, kind of lame.

    • Get the Google rewards app, do the surveys and then use the credits to pay for a 100Gb Google One account, problem solved.

      • I barely make one or two dollars per month with that app. I have location history on so the app does notice some places I visit.

        • $2 per month would basically cover the cost however.

      • how do you set it up to take credits as payments?

JackDeal is selling the Google Pixel 6a for $566.99

Good luck in getting the price match :)

For reference, someone from a previous thread managed to get the WH-1000XM5 price matched at JB using JackDeal

    • +3

I know some Spamazon stores that should have named their business Jack Deals.

    • +1

JB denied price matching this saying it's Grey import.

the TCN gift cards … for an additional 10%

Great idea! I think I will pay for the TCN gift cards by first withdrawing cash by keying in my PIN number at an ATM machine. Thanks!

    • +1

That's a lot of TLAs there

      • +2

Just for FYI, I try to avoid TLA abbreviations whenever possible

        • +2

          +1 for the redundancy.

        • Just for FYI, I try to avoid TLA abbreviations whenever possible

FYI information, don't forget your PIN number when using the ATM machine

  • Worthy upgrade from 4a 5G?

    • +5

What happened to progress?! Why can’t we have the 6a 7G?

      • +8

You'll need to wait for another pandemic. The birds will eventually require additional bandwidth and then the government will decide to upgrade them again. That technology will then trickle down into phones.

        • +1

There’s that trickle-down thing again… the stuff that trickles down to me is a little too contaminated for my liking

    • What issues are you hoping to solve by upgrading?

      • +9

The magic eraser thing is neat if you’re going through a particularly messy break-up

      • Actually nothing in particular, if anything I would like some extra performance (not games, just general phone and app navigation).

I prefer the rear fingerprint sensor and the headphone jack on the 4a.

        • +3

          Then save your money

        • +1

Then you're not going to find much to like about the 6a besides the camera set-up…possibly. 60Hz screen, fingerprint sensor and battery life are all a step down for me coming from a Pixel 5, so YMMV, but i'd wait for a good deal on a Pixel 6 once the 7 launches.

        • My 4a 5g had a cracked screen so traded it in for the 6a 5g. Only part I miss is the headphone jack, so I bought a USBC to headphone adaptor and leave it on the headphones, not too bad.
The new one feels slightly more premium, slightly faster, longer shape.. fingerprint reader is in the screen on the front, no issues at all with it, but the screen goes really bright under your finger when unlocking it, slight annoyance at night but I find it easier to unlock when the phone is docked.
Went from that material cover case to a rubber one, which I actually prefer as the old one material was slightly fraying and looked worn. Camera is miles better in the 6a. Battery life is better as well. Same charging speed but you can get a new type of charger to go slightly faster, not needed though.

          • @foxxo: What was the trade in deal ? I also have a 4a 5G cracked screen :( (have never ever cracked a phone screen before and have no idea how this one got smashed)

  • I was refused a JackDeal price match for the phone.

    • Same. Was worth a shot though

  • +1

    OW price beat possible?

    • You have to find the weak link in the chain — there’s almost always one in the many, many, many

  • -3

    I have to say - It’s a s**t phone.

    • Do tell more

      • A buggy phone with poor battery life.

        • I'm a light user but it's been good. Few annoying bugs but nothing terrible. Battery life is ok, can get through a day but not a heavy user

        • I have one and it runs great. No issues with battery life or bugginess.

      • -1

Software is insanely buggy even on the flagship pixel 6

    • +2

You don't own one do you?

My 6a has been flawless. The only thing you can nitpick is charge speed.

      • This^

      • +2

This. So many whingers and none have even owned one.

        • -2

So many whingers and none have even owned one.

I own one, it sits in the draw because it's worse than my older (and cheaper second hand) P5.

      • -1

I did have one. The worst Andriod phone that I owned in recent years.
It is a s**t phone. the hit-and-miss fingerprint reader in 2022?! OMG.

        • +2

Yeah, right. They changed it on the 6A and it's been perfect. Take your BS and walk.

    • +2

I've had mine for a few weeks, been terrific so far. Of course, I'm not some techno-elite, right?

  • +1

Still recovering from the fact I paid $749 on launch. Had no idea it would drop so fast.

    Average battery life.

    • Didn’t quite reach escape velocity

  • +2

I managed to get JB Hi-Fi them to price-match with Catch for $649, but immediately upon adding the coupon, the 'JB DEAL!' banner disappeared, and it just dropped the price to $599. It went from this to this.

    • What if you went in store? Would it do the same thing?

  • +3

FYI - As per the conditions mentioned in OP's notes, this coupon is unable to stack with other coupon codes, e.g. "92JBGET30" - sample - https://imgur.com/a/S5HC8g1

  • +1

thanks. ordered. pixel 4a starting to die with its battery

  • +1

Tempting, my Pixel 2 battery is garbage these days and I need a new phone (cbf doing the battery replacement myself)

    • Upgrade but keep it around for the storage.

      • You mean the photo storage from pixel 2? Don't even know if that's still a thing TBH.

I pay for 200gb google one storage anyway.

        • its for life. You just leave it plugged in somewhere on wifi.

  • My local Harvey Norman won't price match 😔

  • -1

    Not worth

  • Bought one instore with some TCN cards. The cashier hadn't seen the code before and neither had three others that he checked with. The Manager hadn't seen it before either, but said that if it scanned, the cashier could put it through. Nice.

  • Traded in near new pixel 6 for pixel 6a at 599 happiest ever since

    • -1

What is better in the 6a? I have Pixel 6 and was tempted to buy 6a as my second phone but after watching MKBHD review I begun to review my life choices :D

      • +3

Don't watch MKBHD, MrWhosTheBoss, or Unbox Therapy videos. They're not very accurate or useful. And many are paid/sponsored content hidden as regular videos.

Juan Bagnell, Tech Spurt, Sam Beckman, etc etc… loom for these types of "small time" reviewers.

        • +1 for Tech Spurt on YouTube, the guy's brilliant.

        • Mr. Mobile all the way

      • +1

Part of the problem is watching reviewers that you've noted and basing opinions on that.

Plenty of other unbiased reviewers, theyre just overhyped regurgitators of technical specs

    • How's your experience with the 6a vs 6 so far? Camera specs seemed a lot better for the 6?

  • Are these any good? Hunting for a deal for a a53 5g or a73 5g for around the same price…

    • +1

I'm starting to look at the a73 myself after looking at the 6a and the Sony 10 iv

      • What are you thinking re the 6a?

  • Google Store provided me with a price match. Useful if you want to save on delivery and/or get Google Store cashback

    • ooh how does one get google store cashback?

      • Should have said Google Store credit. 3%/10% depending on whether you are a Google One member

        • +1

Right. Extra credit isn't really cashback. Just some extra sprinkles.

    • Explain this price match and cashback sorcery, please!

    • +1

I just messaged them through the Google Store helpdesk and sent a screenshot of the JB Hi-fi price. They agreed to refund the difference after I placed an order, and confirmed by email.

In the end decided to purchase through JB though using gift cards
