Incredible price, but how crap is this?
Feels to good to be true

    • +5

Forgive me, but how is this an "incredible", "too good to be true price"?

Aren't a few providers doing 50/20 for $53.95 for the first 6 months? Easy enough to churn between them all to keep that price going.

      • +16

Aren't a few providers doing 50/20 for $53.95 for the first 6 months?

No need to go thru the hassle of changing providers every 6 months

    • What’s incredible ?

Superloop is offering the same price albeit for 6 months only.

      • +44

        4 times longer

      • +35

i think there's a big difference between 6 and 24 months for most people.

        • +3

          Agree.
I can’t be (profanity) churning, updating DNS settings and PPPoE details every 6 months, means downtime for shit I use for up to a couple hours usually.

          • +8

@ToyotaCrownHybrid: Couple of hours downtime seems over top. I change every 6 months and takes me like 5mins tops after the churn happens even less if it's IPoE, reboot nbn and router and away you go… PPPoE is a minute longer while i put account details in. So hours seems like a major exaggeration…

            • @duckdodgers245: i mean that's good on you

but i hate having to look at a new isp and try to find out if i can get away with my current modem and having to work out if i can change settings and the like…

it can certainly be hours and it feels like hours when you didnt have to change like at all

              • @tonyjzx: Fair enough. Honestly buy a higher end router that can handle every type connection. Unless you have FTTN then time to order FTTP…

            • +2

@duckdodgers245: Eh, I had problems churning from mate to exetel. Churning at the right date is also something to keep in mind as some ISPs cancel end of billing cycle which can overlap and cause double payments. More of a vigilance thing.

              • @ToyotaCrownHybrid: Really? I just churned to Exetel and ordered it over the phone on a specific day which was done at like 1am. Literally woke up to an sms that it's all done, entered in my username and password, reboot the modem and all was working flawlessly.
I had reservation about Exetel but no issues at all, currently added into my cycle now for ISP's.

                • @duckdodgers245: I also just remembered my static IP changes so that (profanity) some things too, not a big issue, just some websites I host and exchange server.

            • +2

@duckdodgers245: I was off for over 24 hours going to PPoE. Not all carriers become active when they take over. Some take control and only then work on activating your account thus downtime from the point of them taking control and activating/sending you PPoE details. One then has to change router settings over to PPoE. Was a pain but expected it.

              • @Borg: With who? What type of nbn tech you have?
I flip from AussieBB - Superloop - internode(currently dropping then and using Exetel now) - tangerine every 6 months, it's all automated (FTTC and now HFC type connection) so if there is a delay it's more likely complications on your connection. Which is an NBN thing and that's nothing you can do about.

                • @duckdodgers245: No complications with my tech as I know what I have and what I am doing.

It's the carrier and how they handle migrations that can delay this as per what I noted. It also differs if carriers are PPoE vs DHCP. DHCP is easier as it doesnt require being informed of new username and password which in itself can also add potential delays
I am HFC and have churned many times. Most or fine, just not all..

            • @duckdodgers245: It's the YouTube tutorials each time that take hours. Lol

          • +2

@ToyotaCrownHybrid: Just don't sign up for those doing ppoe authentication, it should be banned nowadays.

            • @lgacb08: Many deprecated technologies and processes should be banned. But Uauth should at least have a bit more security behind it. I presume device based cert auth would be much more difficult and tedious to roll out.

            • @lgacb08: What is wrong with PPoE as it is just a method of transport and authentication. Once connected it is fine?

        • Maths checks out.

that seems almost too good to be true

just stay 24 months then churn

        also great for Belong victims

        • +4

I have been with Occom for almost 6 years 100/40 (opennetwork). Never had an issue with them. Heck, probably the only company thaty sent me an email informing me of upcoming downtime planned or unplanned(almost always an openetworks issue). When i setup the connection they were able to sort out the technical issue over the phone(think it was at 8pm). No, did you turn it off and back on again nonsence.

          • +3

@dy4me: You do realise the turn it off and back on again trick fixes 99% off IT issues yeah?

That's why it's the first thing suggested to do…

As annoying as that saying is… It usually fixes everything lol

        • Agree, got an email from Belong on Thursday saying my plan was a legacy one and they will have to raise price by $5 a month. AND drop the speed down to 25mbps. I asked them what is my incentive to stay after this slap in face. Answer was to wait for "later in year for better plan". F*&k that, moved to More with the cba 30% off.

          • @Ozbargainasaurus: I'm looking at more cba 30% discount. What's more like, I'm currently with superloop but prices have gone up 6mth discount ended. Superloop have been outstanding.
More seem to be best deal at the moment.

            • @mckayver: I only signed up yesterday, so still waiting for the switch over. Was pretty seemless. Just a heads up, after I signed up they sent me a text saying don't cancel your current provider yet as it will lead to "severe" delays.

              • +1

@Ozbargainasaurus: Oh ok. I have to change in 2 weeks before superloop billing period ends. I'll make sure to look into that not cancelling current provider.
I many need the free sticky ip address because other providers make you pay for it and 30% discount is excellent.

                • @mckayver: Heres the text in full, you can tell them when u want to start too, if it's a future date

More: Hi dude. We have received your NBN order for NBN Transfer. Please ensure you DO NOT cancel your current service with your old provider as this will severely delay your order. Thanks.

  • +1

if it is not locked, I am in for a try

  • +2

I assume it's a "per month" rate which is missing in the description.

  • how does this compare to Superloop which I signed up for the same price today

    • Superloop are outstanding. Unfortunately my discount period has ended so have to change provider for 6mth and then straight back to superloop.

      • Try more internet if you are with cba

        • Yeah I'm going to change to more, I'm with cba.

          • +1

@mckayver: Nice, plz report your speeds and experience

      • +1

Exetel is also Superloop, you can switch between the two.

  • What's with the 20mbps upload lately? I remember plans used to be 40 upload

      • Does it cost the nbn more money if the upload is higher?

        • No but they can charge more for it so they do

      • +10

@Viaddo: Interesting statement to make i.e. "No one torrents anymore". I can assure you that is alive and well a and most people I know (who know their stuff) still use it daily.

      • What do they use now instead of torrents?

    • +1

Probably cheaper to provide to customers and most people don't need 40 up…

    • Pretty sure NBNCo changed pricing structures so a lot of retailers just offer 20mbps uploadz some have 40mbps options still (e.g. Aussie) but costs more then the 20

    • A while ago NBN introduced 100/20 at a slightly lower price than 100/40, presumably because part of their network wasn't capable of 40Mbps upload. Over time prices have been slightly going up to the point that ISPs either had to increase the price of their plans or substitute 100/40 for 100/20 to compensate.

  • Is future dated connection possible?

Static IP is $10 a month and you cant opt out of the CGNAT for free like Aussie.

Saved a painful chat with the online sales people for y'all techs.

    • MVP.

    • Cheers mate ;)

    • +2

From their website FAQ its says you can opt out if you have a valid reason?

      How do I Opt-Out?
If you have a valid reason and need to opt-out of CGNAT you can call our customer service on 1300 299 299 or contact us through LiveChat and we can opt-out your service. Opting out of CGNAT will result in your unique public IP address changing unless you have a static IP applied to your service. If you have a static IP address you do not need to opt-out as you will not be part of CGNAT.

      • +9

Yeah read that too, when I asked the support chat they said the only way to "opt-out" was to pay for the static IP . That's also why I mentioned the Static IP is $10 a month.

        • +1

Thanks, saved me wasting time with them

        • +1

What’s the benefit of a static IP? I always see it referenced in these sort of posts.

        • -1

Static IP is $10 a month and you cant opt out of the CGNAT for free like Aussie.

Strange, in your first post you say Opting out of CGNAT is free, but now you're saying that you have to pay for the static IP to opt out. 🤷🏽‍♂️

            @Cousin IT:

Static IP is $10 a month and you cant opt out of the CGNAT for free like Aussie.

    • They do mention this static IP fee in their CIS .. however they don't make the CIS very easy to find. Their website is pretty junky.

    Contract Terms
The minimum contract term is 1 month. Occom provides flexible contract term options:
    • No Lock-in Contract: $89 Activation Fee
    • 6-month Contract: $69 Activation Fee
    • 12-month Contract: $49 Activation Fee
    • 24-month Contract: $0 Activation Fee

    Further
    Cancelling Your Service
If you need to cancel your nbnTM Fibre service, you will be required to give us 30 days’ notice. If you are within a contract, a standard early termination fee ($199) will apply. No pro-rata credits or refunds are offered for cancelling accounts. Please bear this in mind if you need to cancel a service.

    • +2

Deal page says $89 activation fee is waived on no lock in contract. So no activation fee on this offer.

      • +1

Im pretty sure hes seeing the same thing I am seeing which is a 199$ termination fee.

        • Termination fee only applies if your in contract. This deal is no lock in contract with $0 activation fee.

          • +2

@silenthillrocks: I have less faith in ISP's following with the wording, its a no lock in, Contract. Its still a contract, you can just leave at anytime for 199$.

I hope you are right but if it was me I would be calling and checking first and then getting it in writing.

            • @Jofzar: From the CIS:
"The minimum contract term is 1 month.", so it's a 1 month contract at most.
"If you are within a contract, a standard early termination fee ($199) will apply."
As long as you have served your 1 month contract, then I can't see how there could be an ETF.

  • Never heard of this company compared to all the others.
Although just signed up with superloop.
Price is good, but never heard of this company?

    • I think they just focus on the asian migrant customers seeing they have support in like 5 languages or something. Probably not targeting locals im guessing.

  • +3

Commbank More deal is better with a 'sticky' ip.

    • Not everyone is with Commbank.

    • I've never got sticky IPs. To me they're like SSHDs, they try to marry two completely different use cases.

    • yeah, if you get a home loan pre approval with comm bank you get free internet for 3 years with More

  • +2

It is a per month rate. 2 years of 100/20 at $69
from Occom rather than 50/20 at $69 from Superloop sounds like a hell of a deal.

Signed up, added my payment details but I haven't received any info on what to configure my router as.

    • +1

Do you remember if you could pick a future connection date ?

      • +1

        Following this

      • As far as I know, I actually couldn't. The only option was the 26th of September.

I contacted support and gave them my Customer Reference number. The support person said "we will order the service for your account. You'll either get an email today or tomorrow."

That was at 6:30, so I'll see what happens tomorrow.

    • they will send you an email with your pppoe user name and password once they got your connection ready

    • +3

      26/09/2022 - UPDATE

After being charged and calling several support people at Occom, I was finally told that my account service was ordered and would be activated in the next 24-48 hours. I eventually received my email containing configuration info on the 25th. After configuring my router with the supplied info, it didn't like the username and password. I got on the phone with yet another support person (in Occom's defence, the wait times are non-existent, one to two minutes tops) who I spent 45 minutes with and were only able to solve it when he recreated my account on his end. Ask them to do that if you have the same issue.

I now have internet, I ordered the 100/20 plan for $69.98 or whatever it was, and they told me my address could only realistically receive 50/20, so changed my plan and price accordingly down to $54.88 a month which is cheaper than what I spent at Superloop for the same 50/20 plan by a whole $15.07 a month. Speed is about the same as Superloop as well so big win all around.

      Absolute corker.

  • credit check?

I'll use Telstra free air, about to switch the fttp off with Aussie broadband, the prices becoming annoying

    • Telstra Air is an unencrypted, open network. The security implications will be just a little more annoying than a few extra dollars a month.

Then again, the savings might be able to buy you a new identity on the dark web lol
