  • Hmm it seem to be very busy TMR centre.
    I have to visit later.

Went in to Elizabeth St Brisbane CBD Transport office today. They had a dedicated Optus line with someone handing out forms and two people checking them. Filled it out, waited in line for 3mins, showed them my existing license and optus email, they took the form. They said I’ll get a new license in the post in a few weeks. Couldn’t have been easier.

    • Was at the Toowong office this morning. They took my details. I was told I will get a call to go back to them again. Most likely will need to queue up again for the new licence.

    • Do you know if they are they checking with Optus to verify or just checking the mail to see?

      • +1

They just wanted to glance at the email

        • Thanks for the info!

      • +1

just the mail I have shown them.

        • Thanks!

    • what time was that lol? Yesterday would have been the day, too late now - the line at Greenslopes was out the door and around the corner almost in the carpark. Didn't bother, CBD may be the go at some odd mid-arvo time.

      • It was at 130pm

        • always busy there anyway at lunchtime, but will walk past a few random times next week.

Anyone been contacted by Optus and offered complimentary subscription to Equifax Protect? Per latest update: "Optus is offering the most affected current and former customers whose information was compromised because of a cyberattack, the option to take up a 12-month subscription to Equifax Protect at no cost"

Looks like Equifax are scrambling together a site: https://www.equifax.com.au/optus

    • Thanks for the link. The page you linked has following in FAQs:

I haven't received my unique code from Optus yet, how can I sign up for Equifax Protect?
Please contact Optus via My Optus app, visit an Optus retail store or call 133 937. Once you have received your unique code from Optus, you can return to this page and follow the "Subscribe now" link to start your new subscription at no cost

I contacted optus through Optus App around 3pm today, and got the unique code around 9pm. I successfully activated equifax protection for free.

FYI - ACT information is here: https://www.accesscanberra.act.gov.au/s/article/Information-…

Short answer - you'll get a new license (with a new card number but not a new licence number) if both the licence number and card number have been compromised. Optus will reimburse the $42.60 cost. If only one field is compromised, no new card is required. You can still request a new card (with a new card number but not license number) and pay the $42.60 yourself. Either way - no new license number - it stays with you for life.

    • +1

I have never ever been asked for the card number (Qld), didnt even know there was significance to the number

      • +1

Apparently a new thing since 1 September 2022 for some states and territories is the need to use both the license number and the card number for ID verification through the national Document Verification Service (DVS). QLD and Vic did not sign up to the new requirement.

      https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/licensing/update/change-you…

The Queensland transport page says you can get a new licence number.

      • +1

Yes, thats QLD, my comment related to the ACT as its not included in any of the posts.

Just fine Optus as much as legally possible jail the CEO as the buck stop with them, sack all the so-called security staff and stop Optus/SingTel selling any new phones or plans from next week and when all current contracts are fulfilled close the company and get rid of it, Let Telsra and Voda take up the rest of the bandwidth/spctrum and new customers

    • +1

The Optus CEO and CIO/IT head needs to resign ASAP and/or be jailed months for negligence. Why only punish the innocent Optus shareholders many of whom are moms and pops with a big fine?

Its high time corporate management be threatened with jail time for negligence and misconduct, they can't just keep collecting their sweet millions dollars paychecks for doing pretty much nothing.

      • +1

punish the innocent Optus shareholders many of whom are moms and pops with a big fine?

Because the shareholders are the owners of the company. It is not relevant who they are or aren't.

        • +1

Ethically they are not involved in the day to day running and failures of the company.

My point is that I don't think corporate big wigs should get away without jail time for negligence while collecting millions dollars checks for decades. They should be punished too.

    • Also letting Telsra and Vodafone take over is anti-competitive and will lead to increased fees for consumers.

  • I received the email from Optus but it states "no ID documents affected" so should I trust Optus?

    • +2

Zero trust from me right now

      • +2

Yeah they also didn't disclose that Medicare numbers were in the leak. No accountability

    • +1

You can follow the instructions here: https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/optus_sept_2022_breach to see what information optus has stored on you.

      • Can you log in if you arent an optus customer anymore?

        • +1

Sometimes. Try it i guess. Note that it'll show the information they have stored on you, which isnt necessarily the same as the information that was compromised.

  • So, I got the Optus email as an ex-customer. they bolded "No ID document numbers or details have been affected" should I be worried and change my DL number?

    • -3

      Are you actually this dumb?

      • +2

No such thing as a stupid question

        • -4

I’ve only ever heard that said by someone who was incredibly stupid, or someone trying to be polite to someone incredibly stupid.

        • So, the thing is, they will require evidence (the Optus email or the SMS saying that it's compromised) to enable you to change the driver's license number (and for free).

If you don't have that then tough luck

Otherwise you'd either have a lot of people abusing the system and not a part of Optus, or 11 million previous customers wanting new numbers

    • You won't be allowed to anyway unless they have told you it was affected. Until yesterday you couldn't even get a new number until you had notification from the Police it had been used in identity fraud.

    • Just be glad that it was less likely it was breached. Its a pain in the ass to have to change it.

  • +1

Does anyone know if they will let you know specifically if your Medicare number was leaked?

    • +2

You can ask optus chat first but they are probably useless.
I'd then check the whirlpool link to check what data Optus has on you. Then assume all of it is compromised.
Then cross reference to what they said on the email or sms.
All else fails you could potentially see if your record was within the leaked records

If after everything and still in doubt, just change all the numbers

      • Thanks.. um what is 'all'? DL, medicare..? I dont believe I have used my passport as ID since it was renewed a few years ago so thats good.

  • +1

    Sarcasm

Cop : gday sir can I please see your license ?

Bloke - Mate I am with optus you can google it if ya want ?

  • What's the consensus on being able to a new driver license number at the same time?

    • Same time as what?

    • Being able what?

  • May as well hold them accountable here:
    https://www.mauriceblackburn.com.au/class-actions/join-a-cla…

May all get $5 in 8 years time, but it's the point of it.

    • +2

Not a lawyer. Can the government sue on behalf of Optus customers? I find that with most class action lawsuits the lawyers get the biggest slices of the pie while the rest of us gets nothing. All you can say is is you 'won'.

      • yeah it's just an online form ,doesn't take long and a few of the firms are on it.
doesn't hurt i thought, easier just whinging on here though haha

        • Doesn't look like a few firms are on it though? Looks like its only MB on the page. There are some MB stories online one can google.

    • Giving more personal details out though, the irony lol

      • Yeah!

      • -1

That's true then getting hit with more emails
No point being too paranoid, hackers could easily find out and get the info they want anyway.

        Just need a dodgy email/number/ vpn/ for everything ..

  • +1

LEGAL Class Action / Class action is a type of legal proceeding in which one person (the plaintiff or applicant) brings a claim on behalf of a wider group of people

Time and car expense to get to Transport office / wasted time in line/ return trip / license fee = approx $200 per customer credited on Optus bill

Easy for them and for victim Lemon to Lemonade

This way they will pay professionals to keep data secure and not skimp on security

    A-boy 1 hour 23 min ago
My friend who works in talco advised me not to accept this offer, once u accept, u may not b eligible for any class action payment by govt in future.

    • +1

works in the talco powder factory?
i'm sure it's worth getting replacement documents for piece of mind and your own security.
You may never even see a dollor from the class action, or wait around for 8y to get $5.

    • Thank you.

  • Any news? I never heard back from them after they took my contact details at Queensland transport.

    • Yep received my new licence today

      • in the post? did you go into the office again?

        • In the post. I went on the first day 28/9, got a call to go back that afternoon. Went back the next morning 29/9 for a new photo and signature, was told it would arrive within 3 weeks. Took 2 weeks.

          • @Rain Cloud: thanks, I also went on the first day but I never got that call. Anyway, I guess I will wait a bit more and see what happens.

            • @53459: Good luck 👍🏻 Maybe try calling them if the wait gets too long, just to find out whats going on

  • -1

Has anyone got a copy of the email so I can swap my name and get a free new licence ? Cheers in advance

    • The lady at TMR when I went didn't even look for longer than 1 second, just a glance at my phone.

  • Had anyone who applied for the new license received their new license no yet?

    • Nope, no correspondence at all. And my old CRN still works for signing up to things, so great job QLD.

      • Same, nothing since going in there almost two weeks ago.

Did you take them up on the free Equifax and set up a credit ban in the meantime?

    • +1

I got mine last week. I went the first day they announced we could. They are getting them done but it’s taking a while.

      • Better check the letterbox ha

        • Ha ha , mate been eyeing on the letterbox like a hawk ..

      • Are they issuing them with old photos or new ones now? I too went on the first day, got a call back to go back for a new photo the next day, received 2 weeks later in the mail. But i heard they arent getting people to go back for a second time for photos now?

        • +1

Depends when you got the last one done i guess.

P.s. email from AHM the dogs as well - signed up but then stayed with my current insurer. They haven't said what exact information was subject to exposure yet. At least new licence and Equifax in place.

          • @G-rig: Mine was less than 10 years old and they were taking new photos for everyone when i got it done

            • @Rain Cloud: that's alright, i had recently just renewed for 5y so no point.

              • @G-rig: They didnt ask if people wanted a new photo or not when i was there, i would have chosen to keep the photo if it meant less hassle but they didnt give us that option

        • +1

With mine they didn’t retake my photo and I didn’t have to go back for a second time.

          • @Any thing: Thanks have you received yours ?when did you apply and where ?

            • @Sunnyoz: Yes, I have recently received mine. It took about a month.

  • I went yesterday to get a new licence number and the lady at the counter told me that it would take a few months.
Those who have received their new licence, how long did it take?

  • Is it still available? I forgot it last year…
