    Every month deal.

    Like clockwork.

  • +1

Good deal? or just so so?

    • +22

      Average deal. Excellent media player.

      • Yep, going by the previous deals.

      • +1

But is it any better then a fire stick or google tv?

        • +7

          Absolutely it is.
I've owned both those devices and went straight back to the Shield.

        • I own both (Fire 4k max and Shield) and it is, but the question is whether it is worth the ~$200 difference in price. Can't speak for Google TV.

          • +9

@mattomatic: If you’re streaming media from the web and don’t care for the best upscaling around (or are watching 4k native anyway) then probably not.

If you want to run a local Plex server, deal with the most possible local file formats (minus 4k av1) or really want that AI upscaller then yes. Or maybe if you want to play games on it but never tried. It is faster and in my; experience more reliable than the chromecast with Google tv, but once you’re watching something you won’t notice.

            • @[Deactivated]: Great breakdown of the differences and why you would want a Shield over the other options. I mostly stream from the Web and don't get too obscure in my x265 format. From what I have noticed the shield is definitely faster and IMHO provides a better experience overall (menu, faster response times, customization) than the Fire Stick (with perhaps the exception of the remote).

              I am just being a tightarse ;)

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Note if you want to stream games from a PC in your LAN using Gamestream a wired ethernet connection is a must. Once it's set up correctly it's pretty cool though.

            • @[Deactivated]: Easily the best media player by a long way. Also the only one that gives you full dolby atmos and dts-x sound with dolby vision capabilities. If you have the system to do it. Which was the main selling point for me. Owned it for 2 years now and its amazing. Price is reflective of that, as its still only $20 cheaper 2 years later from the price I bought it at.

        • +2

streams 60-100gb 4k bluray debrids no problem.

        • +1

          Yes.

This is the intercontinental ballistic missile of media streamers.

        • +1

I have Firestick 4K ($49) and Shield. Shield is great for hosting plex server.
If you don't need plex, firestick is better value. Can't beat it at $50.

        • +2

I've been through so many options, and in the Shield I feel I've finally found a solution that can actually do it all.
I'm obsessive over passing through the highest quality audio I can, and matching refresh rates of the source material I'm watching etc
Kodi runs really well, and with the Kayo, Netflix, Prime, Disney, Paramount and other streaming plugins with Kodi, I get the benefits of the auto-refresh rate switching and passthrough.

Every single thing I throw at it, works perfectly. And much to my surprise, the upscaling is genuinely good. 1080p content (including streaming like Kayo), genuinely looks sharper, cleaner but without sharpening artifacts. It's not quite the Foxtel 4k stream I used to have, but close enough I can watch on a projector without want to stab my eyes out.

    When's a new HDMI 2.1 Shield coming out ?

    • +1

Not sure there's much advantage to HDMI 2.1 in a media player, it seems geared more towards towards gaming with a higher refresh rate and data bandwidth.
Though it seems James Cameron is "remastering" Titanic and Avatar with a higher frame rate, so who knows, it may become a thing…

The Shield will be getting some competition next month, with the 3rd gen Fire TV Cube just announced, which will finally be available in Australia (still need a native Kayo app though AFAIK?):

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09TDTJKF1

    https://www.androidpolice.com/amazon-fire-tv-cube-third-gen-…

    • That's looks good, wonder how well Plex will run on it.

    • +7

NVIDIA Shield TV Pro Will still be king of streaming lol

    • +4

Doesn't seem like a real competitor. No lossless audio support (TrueHD, DTS-HD MA), ethernet port isn't gigabit.

      • Product and review suggest pass through for other formats. It supports dolby atmos. For the price I would think it may be better than existing shield tv pro. It also decode av1 formats.
Will wait for it to go on sale hopefully at 1/2 price ad pick up one :)
Reckon NVIDIA even if they release a new model, they will need to price it competitively.

BTW shield tv decodes dolby vision well compare to eg xbox which doesn't do it properly for certain formats.

    • +4

With kayo I find the kodi app superior. I was only able to watch crappy 720p with kodi its 1080p or i. but much better and it has iptv guide. you can set up AU TV channels in it too. Matt Huismann is the slyguy your looking for.

      • +3

100% agree about the kayo kodi plugin. For IPTV even better with Tivimate!

        • I could never get tivimate to read the list. any tips?

          • @frondono: Nothing special just make sure you enter it as an m3u and type it in exactly remembering its https and case sensitive. If you still need tips msg me your discord id or something.

      • +3

        Agreed.

Matts Kodi add-ons for Kayo / FTA / Foxtel etc are the only way to go, but it's hard to recommend Fire TV devices to friends and family without having a native app for Kayo (and Binge, or Kodi for that matter).

        • +1

You can't install Kodi from the APK at Kodi.tv?

          https://kodi.tv/download/android

          • +1

@jonathonsunshine: Yeah you can, and I have it running (as well as Matts add-ons) on my Fire TV 4K Max, but I don't really want to help setup / sideload (and then support!) a Fire TV device for the old boys at work or my wife's cousin etc - IMO it would be better to have native Kayo / Binge / Kodi apps for Fire TV OS.

      • Even better is that using those plugins in Kodi on the Shield with those plugins (plus Netflix, Disney etc) will do proper refresh rate matching of the source material. No more judder and shudder

    • It looks good but it's huge compared to the Shield.

    • That is serious competition especially with that processor. Any idea what CPU make? The Shield’s speed always put it ahead but I’ll be looking forward to the reviews and tests on the Cube when it comes out.

  • Power supply has a high frequency buzzing sound sometimes when in standbuy mode. Fyi. Very annoying.

    • Thanks for sharing.
Was entertaining the idea of getting this as an upgrade to the standard model I have but not anymore, solid pass.

      • +3

Never had this issue, sounds like if it occurred, could be a fault, get it from a good retailer that will easy to take it back to for an exchange if required.

Best possible device you could own for streaming, using STN app saves me so much time being able to playback YouTube at 1.5x speed, plus it runs Kodi like a dream, ATMOS and HDR output.

    • +4

Definitely not all of them. Not a peep out of my 2019 Pro. 2 and a half years old.

    • +3

Strange, mine's silent and I'm very sensitive to things like coil whine. RMA it, they'll probably send you out a replacement power adapter, hopefully from a different batch/factory.

    • Good to know I’m not the only one.

I’ve got the 2017 and the current model (2019) Shield Pro. Both are buzzing and the replacement power adapter is also buzzing.

I got to accept the fact it is the norm :(

      • You obviously don't understand what the norm is then.

    • have both versions, never have anything like that.

    • I have two shields and never had that problem.

    • Never had that issue been using for years.

    • don't have this problem as well

  • -1

If I have an XBX that plays Dolby Vision do I need this?

    • It depends what you do with it.
If you're just streaming built-in apps then probably not.

    • XBX does not do DV properly. I haven't got it working. Shield is better but consider the new amazon cube.

    • If youre playing downloaded files with DV then shield is the one. Download the Just Player app onto it and it plays MKV remuxes and encodes with full Atmos and DTS-X audio. Streaming apps like Netflix etc youre not even getting proper DV. Its just a video sent through an algorithm that applies a Dolby Vision filter. Although some can look good that way. Its not how its meant to be seen. You do need Blu-Ray quality to see it.

  • How does something like this differ from a NAS configured to stream to a TV?
Genuinely confused at the purpose of this device? It doesn't contain a hard drive does it?

    • I stream from my NAS to this as an input into the TV
Have apps like Plex, Youtube, Kayo, Netflix, Spotify, Twitch, PS emulator, all the TV channels

  • Any advantage over Google Chromecast TV?

    • +5

Much faster, more frequent updates, better remote control just to name a few.

    • +4

If you asking this question, you dont need this.

  • +1

Anyone still having issues with 9.1? I have held off updating due to many reports of remote lag and other bugs

    • +2

      Nope all works great

    • +2

No issues just bonus google ads

      • +1

        Side load Blokada 4: https://blokada.org/#download

      • +4

Yeh I don’t have a shield but a Sony Android tv with the same interface and don’t get the hate for the ads, tbh. They just remind me that latest shows are out. Usually ads are for the shows I’m watching anyway like HOTD and Andor.

      • I dont see ads - maybe be blocked by my ad blocker (Diversion) at the router level.

    • +2

9.1 has issues with bluetooth devices and HDMI CEC remotes not responding for a minute after start up - you can fill in a Google Form with your serial number on the NVIDIA forum and they'll push a hotfix to your Shield and fix this (and some other bugs)

      • That's awesome info, thanks!

I use the shield remote to put my soundbar volume up and down and turn off the TV but almost never use the TV remote to control the shield, so I don't think I'll have any issues?

Although, I gamestream my PC sometimes with my xbox controller, that's Bluetooth, so it could be an issue?

Given it's a hotfix does that mean 9.2 will come out eventually to fix the issue?

        • +2

Yeah generally all the hotfixes that they push out gets fixed in a major next update!

          • +2

@Garbotoxin: Man I'm generally surprised at the level of support Nvidia gives their products. I had an issue of SMB devices not being picked up. I filled in the forum and got the hotfix. Then a week or two later, they had an update with the fix. I'm trying to think of another company who runs android is really receptive to feedback as much as them. Had companies ignore issues for months unlike NVIDIA who was promptly issued hotfixes and timely updates.

I've gotten constant updates and it really says a lot when you are running something from 2017 and get updates. Especially for a tv device.

    • No issues here.

    • No. All good.

  • Could I connect this to a VPN so it always runs when the Shield is on? I need my dad to watch things from another country and I am just trying to find an easy solution for it (the other solution would be to set up the VPN on the router…)

    • As long as your VPN has a client for Android TV then I believe so, but so would a Chromecast with Google TV.

    • using surfshark with Shield, no worries at all.

    • +1

Depending on your router, you can assign a VPN location to one of your local devices with a dynamic IP address.

  • +6

I LOVE the Shield, but seriously it's still at $250+ makes it awful value unless you absolutely NEED what the offers, we are talking about a $100 price drop for basically the same hardware 7ish years later! I LOVE the Shield, and for what it does it's basically the only thing in that class.

But if you don't ABSOLUTELY need the Shield, there are plenty of better value options.

    • -2

      The better value options suck

    • 7ish years later

      2022 - 2019 = 3.

      • +1

The Tegra X1 has been used since 2015.

        • So what though? Still runs perfectly fine and does everything it needs to do, and more.

          • @Tacooo: The main thing that will date it is a lack of a hardware AV1 decoder, though my testing shows it seems to work fine decoding 1080p AV1 in software, just not 4K. Other than that not much has changed since the 2019 release.

        • +1

          Tegra x1 2015 - 2019
          Tegra x1+ 2019 - current

    • Even there is new one version, I don't think I need to buy one for next few years.
It just do what it suppose to do, without any issues for me. Support all the media and features that I use.

It still worth for $250, your second best would be old dell box for $100+ been around for 10 years.

    • Youre completely right. Unless you need a specific feature that only the Shield has then its not worth it. For me it was Dolby Vision and the Atmos, DTS audio. Only one that does that. Yes its so responsive, backlit remote and can use it over network, games, etc. Most people dont need it though. Sometimes if you just want a reliable, fast, do it all box then this is the one and have the piece of mind its as good as it gets. Nvidia knows that no other box comes close, so they continue to charge the same price for years on end and people will have to buy it. I blame the other companies for no competition

    • $100 for a second hand gen 2 (2017) shield still wins on the value front

  • Is a refresh/update of the shield range due soon?

    • +1

Nothing announced, but it'll be released like all the other streaming devices with short notice.

Google has brought out its new stick with AV1 decoding and amazon has just(or about to) brought out their new box, I haven't looked into it much.

I've been looking at the less well-known brands like Mecool and Ugos for a while, I just haven't found one that ticks all my boxes yet.

  • This is one of those product that never gets discounted. I bought the same one for the same price 2 years back.

    • This deal must have made you feel better and relaxed.

  • +1

the AI upscaling it does was what I bought it for. (dumb i know) - but the feature set it has under its belt is why ive continued to use it even after using similiar devices

    it just werks

  • @jv Can you install IPTV on it and watch channels from across the globe ? Which IPTV is good/reliable and how much they cost ?

    • @jv

    • +1

I use KODI and use the simple IPTV client included in the library. They are free.

      • Can you select channels from different countries/regions or that's a premium feature and you need to pay ?

        • +1

I just add are list of m3u8 streams and make up my own list of foreign channels into an m3u file and use that in the setting of the Simple IPTV client.

Some require a VPN to work, others don't.

  • +6

Recently discovered the Smarttubenext app on this. It blocks out Youtube ads which have gotten even worse lately

    • +1

Youtube premium isn't too expensive if you signup using a cheaper oversea countries.
