Probably need to provide a bit more context around this claim

      • ok, fair enough. I bought a return trip from Sydney to Bangkok, with an overnight stopover in Vietnam on the way over, and a 3 hour stopover on the way back. bought the tickets through flight network. this itinerary was given by the airline, and not cobbled together by me.

no major dramas with the trip over- had a visa and stayed overnight in a hotel. on the return journey, the pacific airlines staff said that they would not transfer baggage to our connecting flight- this was the first we ever heard of this- nothing written in the fare rules, or on their website. I then complained, and she promptly decided to cancel our tickets as she decided we would miss our connecting flight- it wasn't just me, other travellers to Sydney were also affected.

I then said I would take my chances and try and get a visa on arrival and make the connecting flight, but she refused to allow this, saying I did not have a valid visa to travel to Vietnam and therefor she could cancel my ticket (even though you couldn't even get multiple entry visas at the time because of covid rules). like I said, all of this was dumped on me at the airport, and she even threatened to call security on me as I argued (politely) with her.

eventually figured out another way home via the Philippines, 48 hours and $8000 later.

have since contacted them/ pacific airlines/ flight network, and for the last 2 months no-one has taken any responsibility. have recently received a semi-apology from them supposedly admitting their error and offering a partial refund only, however, it is in garbled English so seeking further clarification.

anyway, worst travel experience ever for me in nearly 50 years of flying- never had anything remotely this bad. I've sworn off them forever, and warn anyone I know about what they're like and what happened to me.

maybe you'll have better luck- have a great holiday if you do!

        • I forget to mention pacific airlines is 100% owned by Vietnam Airlines.

        • I had a similar experience with gotogate agent. They issued a single itinerary with a minor remark that these are actually two separate flights and I need to pass immigration in Bangkok (connection airport). Then I was denied to board on the first flight because I didn't have ThaiPass for Thailand (since I didn't expect I will have to leave the transit zone) and had to urgently buy new tickets.

          • @niiko: gotogate and flight network are owned by the same parent company:

            https://www.etraveligroup.com/about/brands/

I plan to avoid all these sites from now on.

I was given no such warning by anyone. also, the exact same ticket/ itinerary was being sold directly on the Vietnam Airlines website, so I'm not sure if the ticketing agency was at fault here

        • +1

bought the tickets through flight network.

So how is this the fault of the airline?

          • @1st-Amendment: it's their itinerary though- they sold the exact same ticket on the Vietnam Airlines website

            • +1

              @derdew:

they sold the exact same ticket on the Vietnam Airlines website

So the thing to be aware of here is liability. It's the person who sells you a good or service that is liable for delivery of such. And it's a lot easier for an airline to bump you onto the next available flight than a third party agent. I almost always book direct with the airline, it might not be the cheapest but when things go wrong, and they do quite often, they are in the best position to fix it.
I had a 5 leg trip through Vietnam booked during Covid phase 1 with Vietnam Airlines. They happily gave me a two year credit for all my flights, then when my vouchers were running out 2 years later they offered a full refund which I just got last month. Can't ask for better service than that.

    • +5

That's why you need travel insurance?

      • correct!

and I had it, but claim was denied, as they say it's my fault for not having a visa for a 3 hour airport stopover with a connecting flight, that I could not obtain anyway because of Vietnam's covid visa rules at the time.

        arguing with them as well.

World's dodgiest? Skytrax awards would like a word: https://skytraxratings.com/airlines?stars=1,2

      • -1

The same skytrax that puts Qantas as top 5 airline in the world? They have zero credibility.

        • +3

Not the same? Skytrax doesn't even rate Qantas as 5 star.

          • +6

@TheContact: They used to rate Lufthansa as 5 stars lmao
It's basically a pay-for-stars scheme. Skytrax is paid for reviews.

            • @Techie4066: What airline rankings would you suggest using, since Skytrax is dodgy?

I just tried on phone, and couldn't find anywhere to put the code.

      • You add the tickets to cart then click on cart and there will be a spot for the promo code. It's not very intuitive.

I wasn't able to see where the extra 5% was applied for logging in as a lotusmiles member.

  • Economy does not include free seat selection.

  • +5

Sale is mediocre, not 15% but close to 10% max because it is discount before tax. And departing flight has to be before December. In saying that if you need to fly this or next month it's even cheaper than Jetstar starter fare (without baggage)

    • +1

Yea, January flights for the lunar new year are getting ridiculous, looking at close to 2k for Singapore Airlines. Why can't they just do an extra couple if trips on the busy season..

  • +1

Looks like its for Economy flights only.
    Good airline.

    • +1

I agree, flew with them for a work conference in 2018. before everything went to #$%^
Flew Jetstar internally never again. If you think the Aust arm is bad try the asian options :)

      • -1

Airasia and Jetstar Asia are a bus with a learner driver. Had a flight into Hong Kong, might as well have crashed the plane instead the way they landed that plane. Loudest bang I'd ever heard on a flight.

        • +1

Not sure what either of those airlines have to do with Vietnam Airlines - AirAsia is Malaysian and Jetstar Asia is from Singapore.

          • -1

@Flying Ace: Was a reply to the previous commenters comment on Jetstar. Has nothing to do with you. Notice how many other comments there are on Jetstar underneath? You down voting only me is ridiculous. Why did you even bothered to get involved?

      • +1

Qantas divested from Jetstar Pacific in 2020 so it's now fully owned by Vietnam Airlines as Pacific Airlines (old name).

      • +2

jetstar in japan is pretty decent

    • They have the nicest staff for true!

      • free instant noodles

  • $3770 for Business, for us savvy fliers. Can't believe I got a HK <> Bali flight business for $800 return few years ago, and HK <> Bangkok business for $250 return. Cathay, HK Airlines, Thai, Emirates all used to fight for that leg. The best was Ethiopian airlines 787.

    • You can still get really good deals, just have to play the points game and know it really well.

  • +6

I'm in Vietnam at the minute… Flew with them in economy on a dreamliner and found them to be outstanding. Fed well (lunch and dinner) with airline staff regularly walking up aisles with a bottle of wine doing refills, comfortable seats with good entertainment systems and choice of movies. The only downside was the 90 minutes wait in queue to check in luggage but that was partly my fault for not doing online checkin.

  • +1

Man.. they really went up in price for business…

Few years back i paid $2.2k for Business return from Sydney on a last minute flight.

  • Can some one please post a link here they have used to get Visitors Visa to Hanoi on a Aissie Pasport and the cost

    • +1

      use the official govt site:

      https://immigration.gov.vn/en_US/web/guest/khai-thi-thuc-die…

looks dodgy, but is legit. it was $25usd, and came through in about 2-3 days.

other websites charge an extra fee, and then get you type in all the exact same info. the Vietnam consulate in Sydney were charging $125 per person!!!
