Insanely cheap 65" OLED. Picking up mine tonight and will let you know my thoughts.

Finding information on this is not easy. See below links to other threads

After viewing the Quick Guide on the Metz Product Page I noticed the model stated is S81-9K56T. I believe the S81 is a reference to the Skyworth S81 and 9K56T is the chassis number although I can't confirm if these have any reference to the 65MXD9500A as the quick guide could be generic.

A user confirmed 120hz VRR although the account was created for this comment.

Will post more information regarding the TV tonight/tomorrow after I've set it up

Metz used to be a major competitor to Loewe back in the day. We used to sell their 32" CRT's for around $5000 from memory.
However I believe they are no longer a German company, so you're just buying the name attached to another brand (similar to Grundig and Blaupunkt).

      • I used to laugh at the people who paid that kinda money for a German set, when they weren't even completely flat like Sony Trinitrons were (which cost much less).

      • Yeah, Metz stuff used to be the ducks nuts, high end German stuff. Overpriced, but wonderful pieces of kit. I had (still have - it works just like the day it was bought) a Metz flash for my camera, it was a thing of beauty.

Sadly they are now just names with no connection to the original companies. I wonder why the brands are even kept alive as only old farts would remember their old reputations.

        • And old reputation is better than no reputation, at least that's the idea

  • +12

Thought New York Mets. Well… If I am buying OLED at this price, I will save a bit more and get LG OLED.

  • For $1300 I might try it…

  • Does it have VESA so it can be mounted on a wall?

    • +1

According to the quick guide it does

    • +1

Yes it does, but the back isn't flat. The bottom protrudes out further than the vesa mount holes, which means there's a bottom limit on where you can mount the bracket on the tv

      • So some brackets might not fit the back of the tv? Or, after the bracket is fitted it wont be flush against the wall?

        Thanks.

The author of this article confirmed in the comment it is only HDMI 2.0, no 120hz from console and PC.
    https://www.gadgetguy.com.au/metz-oled-tv-range-video/

    • I don't have any 2.1 HDMI sources to test it but the HDMI settings in the menu let you pick 1.4/2.0/2.1
I think 2.0 is the default

      • +5

I'll test this tonight with the Xbox Series X and confirm

        • It took me a bit to figure out, if you want to enable game mode you have to disable memc

          • @based: So it's 60Hz in game mode? What are your overall impressions of the TV, is it worth the savings over LG C1/C2?

            • @jonahmvp: MEMC is the artificial smoothing, makes sense that would be disabled for game mode, that kind of processing is going to add latency, it was just weird that the game mode toggle was inaccessible until that was off
I don't think game mode locks it to 60hz, but I don't even have any HDMI 2.0 sources I can use to try anything higher
There's definitely some input delay, even in game mode
I haven't actually looked at screens in store to compare it to, this was already a stretch - we were never going to shell out for an LG
I'm coming from an aldi dumb tv, big improvement in colours and I'm coming around on the smoothing, I didn't like the idea of it but it is pretty good.

        • We're all curious.

Tested the Series X on all HDMI ports with HDMI 2.1 setting enabled. 4K 120hz does not work.
What I found interesting was the option for 1080p 120hz works on the HDMI 2.1 setting and not 2.0.

TV is definitely 120hz native. Tested with Series X in 1080p and recorded the screen at 120fps and each frame was a unique image.

Not overly fussed about the 4k 120hz as most Series X games use dynamic resolution when trying to achieve 120fps and you notice the downgrade in graphics quality.

Halo Infinite in 4k 60hz Dolby Vision looks incredible on this TV!

Might not be in the same league as the LG C2 but its a huge upgrade over my Sony x900H. Very impressed with this TV and for under $2k its a bargain, imo

        • +1

Well that's disappointing but nice and thorough of you. That was with a 2.1 cable yeah?
What do you think of the input delay?

          • +2

@based: Yeah I used the cable that came with the Series X.

Didn't notice much input delay in Game Mode.

With Dolby Vision enabled I noticed some delay while playing Halo Infinite but still felt responsive and easy to aim.
Even with DV enabled, the input delay is much lower in comparison to the Bauhn 4k TV I have.

Don't see it being an issue for most console players but might be an issue for competitive/PC gamers.

      • Where in settings did you find this option?? I don’t seem to be able to select 2.1??

        • You need to be on a HDMI input or else you can't get to the setting
Click Menu and pick 'more' at the bottom, then 'setup' then 'HDMI setting '

The TCL one is cheaper and has great reviews… what's this brand?

    • +4

      TCL 65" OLED? Link?

      • -1

True, Did not pay attention to that. My bad

  • +2

Isn’t this a really good price? What’s the catch?

    • +1

My guess is people don't want to purchase an unknown brand name so they're trying to clear them out.
Original retail price was $3199 according to this post

Considering it comes with 3 years warranty, I decided to take the risk

      • Considering it comes with 3 years warranty, I decided to take the risk

Do you know what are the warranty conditions, eg. how many bad pixels are considered a fault?

Because it might be that you get 3-year warranty, but they won't do a thing if there are "only" a couple very annoying hot pixels in the very middle of the screen.

        • Tempo are pretty bad with their warranties in my experience. Having said that what's the the failure rate of cheap tvs these days? Can't be that low?

      • That $3199 retail is a joke. People buying 65" LG Oled for under 2700 regularly. They are clearing em out because no one is buying a no name for more than a brand name.

Not to mention most people don't know the difference between oled and anything else, so they are inclined to buy a Samsung for 1k

        • Completely agree. Im happy with the TV for the price I paid as long as I don't run into any issues in the near-future

        • +1

65" C2 LG OLED has rrp of $4376

Let's just all agree rrp is a joke for all TV's.

Historical links to LG 65" OLED under $2700??

  • Hey went in to GGs this afternoon to check it out and the panel and colour s are nice, but the processing is pretty average and lets the TV down. Lots of anomalies when changing scenes, lots of blurring … Really was hoping for slightly better, but let's this screen down. This was 4K high bitrate example video

    • also checked it yesterday and the unit they had showed noticeable burn in… not too tempted

      • Would the 3 year warranty cover burn in?

        • I don’t think warranty covers burn in

    • +3

Had the same experience when seeing it in person regarding the motion.
Turned off all the motion settings except film mode and its much better.
Also turned sharpness down to 0 as this was adding a sparkle effect during panning shots

  • +7

Overall impressed with the TV. Motion is good once all the motion handling settings are off (Except film mode)
No noticeable difference in brightness compared to my x900h other than the highlights in HDR being slightly dimmer on the Metz.

My TV settings below after using various calibration methods:

    Picture Mode: User
Dynamic Brightness: Adjusts brightness depending on ambient lighting. I have this turned on
Brightness: Personal preference. Irrelevant if option above is enabled
    Black Level: 53
    Contrast: 48
Saturation: 35 (38 if you prefer a more saturated image)
Sharpness: 0 (Correct sharpness level. Anything higher adds artefacts)
    Gamma: Bright

    Color Temperature

Set to Warm then Red Gain -4 Red Offset -4
    Everything else on 0
Colour temperature was matched by eye to various images using the iPhone 13 Pro Max as a reference device

    Advanced Settings

Everything turned off except Film Mode (Auto) and ALLM enabled if gaming

    • +1

Update: Colour temperature seems to revert back to USER after making adjustments and leaving the settings menu.
Will check again later and see if this has any effect on my initial calibration

      • Making adjustments to the 'Warm' Colour Temperature only applies until you turn off the TV then it resets to 'User' with the same values you set to 'Warm'.
Warm is good enough for me. If you want a brighter image and brighter HDR highlights, set it to 'User'.

UPDATE: I have created a spreadsheet on google docs with ideal TV settings and Xbox settings. Ignore settings above

          Link to spreadsheet

          • +1

@jsediv: Thanks for this @jsediv! One thing that annoys me with settings are the digital channels not being assigned to their recommended numbers (like 90 for 9HD etc) but rather sequentially from 1-however many channels there are.
Tried manually rearranging and putting radio stations in between but run out of channels to get to the 70s and 90s for Ch 7 and Ch 9 respectively….
            Anyone have a hack/fix???

            • @siwotravels: I've seen a setting that gave that option but I can't remember where, it may have been during initial setup or when tuning. Mine uses the 'real' channel numbers

            • +1

@siwotravels: When the tv prompted LCN Switch before it started searching for channels, you should have turned it on. I turned it off the first time so I did a factory reset so that I could go back to the option.

              • +1

@KRRacing: Thanks @KRRacing - worked like a charm and didn’t even have to reset (just turned LCN on and re-tuned)

  • It worries me that specs are so hard to find, but good on op for providing info and testing lol
