  • All I wanted for years is a 3080 FE… But I was never able to grab a brand new one before.

    Hope for a 4070/4080 FE.

    • +1

      4080 is pathetic…..

      • Why is that?

        • +1

it has 60% less cores, you'd only see about a 20%-ish increace over the 3080 cards for double the money.

  • Can I eat this instead of mi Goreng noodles

    • +1

Just put some chilli sauce on it.

    • +1

boil in water for the flavour

      • Got to render out the delicious minerals from the PCB and the thermal paste

        • Yeah. You gotta put it in a slow cooker. Low and slow.

  • Price aside, this cards HUGE at 4k

  • I remember when the top 7800 GTX sold for maybe $800 at PLE in the old days…

    • Hi Phil :D nice to see you here :D

    • +1

The flagship card was under $600 for every gen except the last 4 (5?), For decades.

There were always solid mid-range cards not much weaker for $200 to $400. That's what an enthusiast PC gamer should expect to pay for a great GPU.

This is not inflation, this is the GPU crisis still ongoing. It's not as bad as last year, but it's still insane.

  • I'd love to know the demographic of people who not only have enough disposable money to justify purchasing this, but more importantly enough spare time to actually utilise it by playing games. I've generally found those with plenty of spare time have little disposable money, and vice versa. I would have thought with many of the professional workloads (beyond encoding, rendering, etc.) being crippled by Nvidia to segregate and peddle their workstation products, it wouldn't make sense as a work purchase. Enlighten me.

    • My colleague is in this demographic. He is married with no kids. And got plenty of disposable income to afford this. He plays lots of computer games in his spare time.

      • Key point here, "no kids"

        • +2

Yes they do exist. People that can afford said graphics card is all the point im making.

    • So, not that I'm considering buying this.

But that demographic you speak of - FIFO, Single and a good roster.

I work a 2/2 roster and don't have any major overheads, but I'm not that silly to waste $2.8k on a card. Unless I get into VR ;)

      • Funny enough my colleague has just that a VR setup.

    • +4

It's basically 30+ year old gamers mate, it's not as interesting as everyone seems to think. I mean if people can ride $6k bicycles or own track cars I don't see any reason a $3k GPU is all that strange. People don't need to prove its justified, they might just want to play the best and newest at top settings a handful of hours a week (most of them may work full time and have families so again not unusual).

    • It's not that hard really, a lot of people in their 30s who choose not to have kids can have a lot of disposable income and time.

For myself I have a decent job and I am very budget conscious, I have about 5 accounts setup for mortgage, bills, spending, savings and finally an account I call "fun money".

I put a couple of hundred a week into the fun money account and use it to buy whatever I want knowing it won't negatively impact my life. Since June I've barely touched the account as I wanted to buy a new gaming rig, so now I'm waiting for everything to release and will make a decision to purchase.

A little discipline and structure and it's amazing how quickly you can save.

I see a lot of people shaming others for buying expensive things, but people shouldn't be put down because they are well organised and know how to save.

With all that said in my 20s I spent everything I earned so I do understand how it appears crazy for people to buy something like this.

    • This card (like 3090) is good for some professional workloads, like 3d rendering or deep learning.
The next one to be significantly faster for machine learning would be something like A100:

    • +3

i'll probably get one eventually… late 30s, married with no kids, primary hobby is online gaming (specifically sim racing)
i had a bunch of expenses with a blown PSU and a new NAS build so i'm not really in the mood for dropping $3-4k again this week :|

i know a bunch of guys in similar positions, some have kids some don't, ~$5k a year on PC parts when that's your primary hobby isn't the lunacy that people like to say it is, plenty of people would spend more than that on cars, motorbikes, cycling, photography etc.

    • Time is the important thing here, the older you get, the more money have but less time left to enjoy the finer things in life. We have a generation of older gamers now, probably the first ever in their 40-50s, peak earning years but still enjoy gaming, so they want to enjoy that gaming experience the best way possible before their reflexes go to crap.

Besides if you're into other hobbies, gaming is still relatively cheap compared to cars/bikes, hell even road bicycles now, top end bikes are asking 20k. I know personally, just working from home now saves me a lot of money every week, that money saved is a 4090 instead of petrol/train/coffees etc.

      • i know someone dropped 25K (it was in 2018) on a full carbon frame (just the main bicycle frame), and he said he imported it… and its the cheap model.

people are in different stages of life and with it difference in disposable income… the people complaining about how someone should spend their money are just weird.

        like, it's their money?

    • With the tiny numbers of these available at launch, it could be 100% billionaire's kids.

    • Not all of us live the cookie-cutter lifestyle…

  • Would this card bottleneck my Intel Pentium Processor G3258?

    /s

If my 486dx 66 with a turbo button should run fine with it. Yours should be too.

      • turbo button down clocks it further :P

      • My turbo button took my XT from 8mhz to 10mhz.

        • +2

          Easy now speedy gonzales

  • +1

The Show Car of graphics cards.

  • HODL till 4070 or 4070ti

  • +2

    Yeah, nah..

  • +6

The Irony that i'm now at a point in my life that I can now afford these things but I cannot justify buying one because I barely have time to game. When I do find time, games these days take up so investment in your time that 30-1hr won't even cut it getting through the introductions and cut scenes.

The last 3080 i bought is not getting much love. I thought my son would at least make use of it but he prefers to game on an iPad.

    • +6

Apparrently you are bragging if you say you can afford this.

For those not playing along. Yes there are people who can afford things. Like $2k iphones and $5k mac all in one devices. Just because you cannot doesnt mean everyone is like you.

      • +2

Anybody who are on a salary should be able to afford this. While being expensive, it is not unreachable for a working class man like a Ferrari. I can afford this too but I’d need to upgrade power supply and measure my case to check if I could fit it in etc. so I’d rather to buy a 4080.

        • -1

And yet im getting negged for saying i can afford one but chose not to buy one.

        • +1

Totally agree, nfi why ozb people think any average full time employed Aussie can't afford one of these. Yes expensive for a GPU based on history but who cares.

          • @drprox: The people that negged me seem to care.

            • @xoom: There are lots of salty OzBargainer's who are in denial. This site drives consumerism much more than saving money.

      • +1

LOL with their logic me being able to afford a Tesla is bragging although i choose to drive discretely in 10yr old, very reliable Japanese car.

I think smarter purchasing decision is why we're able to afford it. Bragging would be purchasing it any cost and flaunting it.

But back on topic, to those who may think i'm bragging, it was more to point out how disappointing it is because of how much I enjoyed gaming in my younger years. The 20yo me would be envious to be able to afford a gaming setup like this. I was super excited when i built my 3080 gaming pc but that excitement was short lived as I tried to force myself back into gaming and could not enjoy it.

        • haha, When Overwatch came out I was playing with my 970, then upgraded to a 2070. Then scored a 3080 and 5900x for my first full custom loop PC.

          I still just play Overwatch.

          • @samtrois: Lol me too sort've. Upgraded to 6900xt and 5900x and …still at aoe4 haha. I am trying some other more demanding games though :)

I still enjoy it and that's all that actually matters.

    Thanks op, ordered 10!

  • The launch prices for 4090s seems to be closed to the inflated 3090s at the peak mid last year. While people were complaining last year, they seem to be fine with the 4090s. I don't get this.

    • You get 2x performance for almost the same cost as the launch price of 3090, around a 10% increase, the same price taking inflation into account, 3090s were around 3k at launch. If you need this level of performance, it's a great deal.

4080 seems to be a much worse offering.

    • Sorry but that's a completely different context.
3090s were only a few % faster than 3080 which SHOULD cost $1000. Paying $3k for that was absurd.
There is no competition to this card. Even comparing dollar vs framerate it's a much better deal than 3090s ever were.

      • +1

Right, the only reason to get 3090 would be the task required 24GB of VRAM, it's a Titan replacement.
If you needed 24GB of VRAM (for productivity tasks, not for gaming) 3090 was a good deal, everything else was much more expensive.

  • -4

Imagine paying $3000 just to see a slightly higher number on the corner of your screen.lol

    • +2

Apple people dont seem to care that their own brand did not compare the latest phone to last years model. They still bought the new iphone in droves.

    • i wish it is slightly, but it is actually very close to 2 times the fps.

  • My M1 MBP 16" has less memory than this!

    • I'd guess that almost all laptops have less memory than this

  • Chode card

  • Will this run Crysis at highest settings?

    • No. Its only good for solitaire or a game of hearts.

  • +3

A bit too rich for my blood but the comments section is a hoot.

  • If you can afford a high refresh 4k monitor you can afford this card.

Overkill for me rocking a 1440p ozmonitor haha

Disappointed with the apparent 4080 numbers but will be interesting to see.

AMD or another generation to wait.

    • But you are apparently bragging if you say you can afford one.

    • I can afford for a 900$ 32 inch 4k 144Hz monitor but I'm looking for a sub 1k card. Not a fan of high-end gpu

  • +1

    $2799AUD = $1758.85 USD

  • HODL until 5xxx cards, they will have better performance.

  • @luketechfast Any change of deals on 3070ti's or rx6800xt's over the coming weeks? For those who don't have series 4 money D: <3

  • +2

Nice. will need it for Star Citizen, which I've also paid for…

    • Between the initial campaign and now, I've gone from a R9 290x, then GTX1070, RTX2070 and now on RTX3080…

    • +1

Don't forget fast RAM. That's given me the biggest gains in SC.

  • following as i'm curious to see how the 4k series will go in terms of sales, supply and demand.

  • Will this run RuneScape?

    • osrs or rs3? probably sufficient for osrs but may drop fps if playing rs3

  • decent price compare to rrp but not a bargain.

  • Just wait 2 months for 4080ti with 16gb at 95% performance of 4090 for cheaper

    • Ti's come mid cycle and definately not 2 months later.

  • +1

    Is this a reference PCB?

    • @luketechfast would be good to know this if you know

  • Did anyone actually buy this or is the post just for laughs?

    • I reckon 10% of people here buy them, the other 90% are here just for a laugh at the 10%.

      • +2

the other 90% are here just to envy the other 10%

  • +7

Plenty of workers out in the real world would drop 5 times this price to tart up their Toyota Hilux. Wheels, canopy, suspension, bullbar, lights, tune etc. Easy 15k and more. And there are thousands of these done every month.
My point is, a coupla hundred computer geeks whinging about price should look around and appreciate that bleeding edge technology is available for a (relatively) affordable price.

    • +1

      see also: photographers and audiophiles

      • The difference is great cameras/headphones will still be great in many years time, this will not

        • +6

yeah… i suspect you haven't stepped into that pool before… there's always a new bag, new tripod, new lens, new body, new filter, new accessories… and all these are just the hardware. nevermind the software subscriptions you are up for yearly/monthly… the "right" monitor with the correct colour reproduction, the calibration hardware and other crap.
this is easily 10-15k on the first 3-5 years of stepping into that…

for audio, there's always the chasing for fidelity… i'm not even sure if i should start with this.

the funniest part of this is, there's never a "great" setup even on the latest and greatest camera lens or tube.

          • @slowmo: I mean I do know quite a few people that buy a Sennheiser mid range headphone then quit the hobby because they are content with it. Music doesn't exactly get harder for headphones to handle

            • @zjz93: yeah…quitting the hobby right after buying 1 item isn't exactly as you'd describe as having a hobby… that's just buying a thing.

if sound/music is as easy as you described, then there wouldn't be a multi-billion dollar industry in it.

there are consumers, and there are hobbyists, the group of people you described is not in the group of people being discussed here.

    • +6

Just people hating on other people because they cant afford and others can. The difference between being able to afford something and bragging is one can buy it with their own money without over extending on their finances. While braggers will buy shit with credit maxing it out just for internet clout.

      • the smart ones will buy, brag, video and resell.

        • Meanwhile the dumb ones will freeload. Or at least try.

          By paying with shoutouts.

          😂

          • @xoom: ayy, anyone seeking to be paid by exposure deserves it. :)

    • Hiluxes are garbage.

  • +1

Should've bundled this with a PSU. Chances are everyone will need to upgrade that too.

    • The next one will have to be bundled with a nuclear reactor to power it.

      • next one will just plug into the wall directly

    • Time to launch a separate VPSU. Cooler Master, did you hear it?

      • The modding community has been able to run dual psu for years.

  • +4

for all the boys who chanted "HODL for 4xxx seriess!!!111" go on then… BUY IT

    • +2

Now they are saying hodl for 50xx series. When that comes out. Rinse repeat for the next gen.

      • 4090Ti first…

    • +2

HODL for 4070, then 4060, then 4050, then 5090, on and on.
