Yeah, I won't be buying these in the future.

I thought I could use them anywhere you can use MasterCard and now it seems I can't.

It's also limiting with using split payments, but makes sense for a large purchase.

I hope I can pay my Optus invoice and my council rates with these this week!

I'd nearly be inclined to get a refund!

    • I paid some council rates and Yarra Valley Water this morning.

      • Thanks, I will call tomorrow and pay!

Too risky to use anywhere else and having to go through the drama of being rejected!

I thought I could use them anywhere you can use MasterCard

I see you were tricked by the borderline misleading marketing on the gift card packaging.

Coles Mastercard gift cards are prepaid Mastercard gift cards, which means a couple of things:

      • They are unverified cards, as the person who purchased and activated the card in the first place was not asked to provide sufficient ID to verify their identity.
      • They are not attached to a bank account (which is the reason they are called "prepaid").

The fact that prepaid gift cards are unverified cards means that they are "less secure" cards when compared to a debit card or credit card, and as a result, some merchants will choose to not to accept them. For example, prepaid gift cards do not (and cannot) support 3-D Secure, which is a security feature that some merchants will sometimes use to challenge the person attempting to make an online payment to verify they are actually the cardholder of the card being used (and this challenge will usually be in the form of asking the card issuer to request a two-factor authentication code).

InComm (the gift card owner) and Heritage Bank (the gift card issuer) cannot control whether merchants to choose to accept their gift card, so keep that in mind. Having said that, InComm and Heritage Bank do block some merchant types (including cash-equivalent transactions, automated fuel dispensers and the ATO), so you definitely cannot spend a Coles Mastercard gift card anywhere Mastercard is accepted.

You really need to think about how you want to use prepaid gift cards, as the ability to spend them as not as flexible as a debit or credit card. You probably would not pick up on this if you just look at the front of a Coles Mastercard gift card!

  • I am Unable to check balance for few weeks now. Is anyone else having same issue ?

It says "A system error has occurred. Please try again later."

    • change locale to AUS

    • I had that error previously as well, but it now seems to be working this morning.

      • Im getting the same error too now

    • This appears to be rate limiting. When you conduct "too many" enquiries, the system limits further enquiries for a set period of time.

The above is my theory based on experience.

    The power of the people.

Heritage complaints: 'I am pleased to inform you that as an outcome of the investigation these cards can now be used with ATO and BUPA.'

Do you think we can get OnlyOne VISA to allow ATO payments?

    • https://onlyonegiftcard.com.au/terms-conditions/ - point 4, would ATO be excluded?

      1. This card cannot be used at the following merchant category groups; Automated Fuel Dispensers (5542), Gambling transactions (7995), Financial Institution–Automated Cash Disbursements (6011), Financial Institution–Manual Cash Disbursements (6010), Financial Institution–Merchandise And Services (6012), Quasi Cash–Merchant (6051), Securities–Brokers and Dealers (6211), Wire Transfer Money Orders (4829).
      • No, because the MCC for the ATO should not be 6010.

If you look at the public manual Visa has compiled for MCCs, the description for MCC 6010 is:

This MCC must be used for face-to-face cash disbursements.

Face-to-face cash disbursements would be for where you withdraw cash from a human teller at a bank (as an example). It would not be ATO payments on the ATO website, as there is no cash being disbursed to you for an ATO payment.

The ATO should fall under MCC 9311 - Tax Payments:

Merchants classified with this MCC are local, state, and federal entities that engage in financial administration and taxation including collection of taxes and penalties and custody and disbursement of funds.

However, I think the issue is that the OnlyONE Visa gift card specifically blocks the ATO as a merchant, not the MCC associated with ATO payments.

Btw, the Activ Visa gift card also blocks ATO payments, so maybe that is another card to add to the list…

  • For someone who is wondering if Wise works now? Short answer is no. It’s only Bupa and ATO that they have unblocked.

  • +1

    Confirmed ATO working now.

  • It worked with a wine distribution business today, but it probably varies.

As long as it pays my Optus Invoice, and my Council rates I'll be okay!

  • Can you block your card from spending? so it is secured from hackers?

    • Yes, call 07 5660 6022. Select option 3
then press 0 to speak with someone. They call it put on hold. Some of the staff are helpful others not so much. Open 24/7 but the last time I rang after 10 pm got someone called Paulette and she was horrible.

      • What about VISA Activ Online Shopping, do you think I can do the same like this as well

        • No sorry.

  • Can you pay for your rent with this card, I'm very curious

    • If your landlord accepts MasterCard and the value is less than the card value or they accept split payment, I should work.

      • So If I talked to the agent I would like to pay rent 3 months in advanced with this card, most likely they wont reject it right.

        • +1

Yup to them it's just a MasterCard

        • You may need to check the relevant fees as well. L

          • @SabreTooth23: right. I just checked electricity bills, there is cost 0.5%

            • @ivyholmes: Some electric providers do not charge fee when paying via paypal. I add the card to may paypal account then pay the bills. It went ok that was awhile ago not sure if its thats still the case. I know people are having different issues with their cards usage.

              • @SabreTooth23: my electricity is free with Bpay or direct payment via bank account. No option for paypal sadly

    • Most of the real estate agents/Strata companies have their accounts with Macquarie Bank.
They provide payments via DEFT - deft.com.au - You should have this in the rental agreement or your initial email from your agent/

I've paid strata and rent via the above website(multiple payments using these cards) however there is a 0.5% surcharge

    • Don't see why not. One of my customer rocked up paying a $7500 bill with $250 cards. He was happy to clear the balance, I was happy cos it I got paid.

      • Can use it pay your self too.

        • It will work, as to what tax implication you may be responsible for, you will have to check with your accountant.

  • Seems many loophole had closed. ato 551 acount is last way to use it.

    • I have used them this week to pay Council and Water rates, with no surcharge.

      • Topped all of those :) and utility

  • dammit I have 5x250 and 5x100 of these POS cards.

seems like they even blocked eBay.

Can anyone else check if Ebay works for them? maybe I just have a batch of duds…

    • +1

I've used the cards on ebay through Paypal a few times, last time a few days ago. But always where the total was less than the money available on the card.

      • +1

That's a good workaround but only useful if it allows you to link to paypal. plus I can't fathom why I have to jump thru hoops to bypass a restriction when you should be able to just use it "as is"

in my case only 1x100 card linked. cards cannot be used directly. can't even use it to pay for ebay plus sub. all cards checked with full balance.

I wonder if complaining to afca/hertiage would get Christ to compel them to get their act together. they did buckle and lift the ato and bupa restrictions…

        • +1

I have 3 of the promo cards linked in PayPal besides a couple of regular CCs, and haven't had any issues using them unless insufficient credit for purchase.
It is a hassle to register, keeping track of credit (nicknaming the cards with the remaining credit in PayPal helps), and then removing finished cards. But each step is only a few seconds/minutes each.

  • Has anyone used these gift cards on Liven? The MasterCards used to work fine unlike the Visas, but now I can't add MasterCards to Liven either. They give different error messages though, Mastercard says it's declined while Visa says it's unable to authenticate.

    • true, it doesn't work on liven, neither gpay, samsung pay nor apple pay

Just had a fortuitous use for these cards. A few months ago I booked a stay for the weekend and used the Coles Mastercard for the 10% deposit (~$193). This week my wife caught COVID and so I called to cancel the booking (for the upcoming weekend).

The staff there said that normally I would lose 50% of my booking but as the Coles Mastercard we provided declined when they tried to get the money, I will only lose the 10%. We did not even know that they tried to charge it as we did not get any emails from them. Bit of bad admin on their side and fortune on ours.

    • +1

Yes a prepaid card or a loadable visa debit card are great for companies with bad refund or cancellation clauses

      Saved me thousand's

    • We did not even know that they tried to charge it

Curious to know how did you find out that they sneakily tried to charge the card?

      • Woman on the phone told me that the CC was declined when they tried to claim the 50% in the two weeks leading up to the stay (and full payment is usually done a few days before event start). We did not get any emails from them about the charges failing so I guess they were just assuming they would ask for the full payment when we rocked up on the day.

  • Anyone else have trouble using these with Shopback?

    • I've seen comments that they can be a bit hit and miss. Apparently if you cycle too many cards into Shopback your account will also get temporarily suspended too.

      • Cashrewards also blocked my account for buying giftcards with too many of these MasterCards

        • Could be just too many cards added.

    • Was able to use 4 or 5 cards to buy GCs during the promo but then Shopback stopped accepting them. Haven't tried again in the weeks since.
