      • @maverick1, yeah that's what I thought. They said because it's a third party card, they don't have anything to do with it, they just sell it (really?), blah blah. Which I thought was just bad customer service. Too tired to argue, thought I'd try calling the vendor first and see if I can get a replacement. If not, definitely going back to Coles.

Oh, and when I called the vendor earlier. They asked for the card number which I didn't want to do because I'll need to open the packet. Was worried after I open it, then they tell me to go back to Coles. And Coles say "why did you open the pack? now we can't prove you haven't used it or already got a refund through the vendor"

Will call them again and report back

        • Just encountered a same issue, bought 5, 4 was fine but 1 got declined but charged me. I asked to get refund on the spot but no luck. They gave me the number to call but it closed.

            @fishandchips: That’s stupid.

I had one of my Coles Mastercard gift cards declined at the checkout earlier today, and the duty manager happily took the declined gift card off me and sold me a replacement gift card, but it took a couple of minutes to sort out. The store I visited had a pile of dead Coles Mastercard gift cards at the service desk, so it has been a problem cropping up throughout the day.

If your local store needs instructions:

            • Do a receipt-based return for the original transaction.
            • Refund the purchase amount to cash. (Either $94.50 or $231.30.)
            • Close the cash drawer as soon as it opens without taking any cash out.
            • Grab a different (non-active) gift card and proceed to do a purchase.
            • Select cash as the payment method.
            • Close the cash drawer as soon as it opens without putting in any cash.
            • Keep copies of the original transaction receipt and provide the customer a copy of the transaction receipt for the replacement gift card.

@WookieMonster: This is exactly how Coles Chatswood resolved declined cards for me. I had 3 out of 5 cards declined at the checkout and they knew exactly what process to follow. Actually I think the cards may have been OK but the screen froze and rebooted mid-transaction. When they reprinted the receipt it only had 2 of the 5 cards on it but of course I had been charged for 5 cards. The supervisor gave me a $2 Coles voucher as a sort of apology.

              • @SydneySwan: $2? Amazing!

                • @Bdawg: It must have taken at least 10 min, so that's $18 per hour.

                  • @Yola: Yes but I wasn't actually expecting anything. In any case they were very polite and apologetic about it.

            • +2

@WookieMonster: It seems to be a pretty widespread issue this round. One of the stores I went to today said they had a heap of problematic cards and checked my receipts carefully to make sure all of them had been activated.

          • @fishandchips: @fishandchips, at least they gave you the number. They told me to go on the website on the back of the card and look for it myself. Such bad customer service.

But I can see how some staff get annoyed every time these type of promos are on. Every couple of minutes someone asks if they have any more cards in stock. Even at the self-check out, they needed to swipe their card twice to approve the transaction (1st swipe needed if you buy more than 3 cards, then they needed to swipe again for something else I can't remember)

            • @smallstakes54: Ok, after read through the previous thread, someone mentioned, the staff double scan or scan twice the same card. I just checked the receipt yes, it the same card. Now need to pop to another train and go back, useless staff I said.

              • @fishandchips: All sorted. I went back and explained to them and they happyly, scan the card that never scanned and put through and showing the unscanned card “Approved”

              • @fishandchips: Thts very weird, double scan should not be happened as screen shows “the card has been already scanned”.

                • @R n b: Second that, I tested this today and it did come up with a warning message.

              • +1

                @fishandchips: This!
The scanner at the self checkout wasn't very good. First couple of cards scanned ok, the third one wouldn't scan at all after trying multiple times. He came over and said we need to scan the barcode on the back, not the front. But we already knew that. He tried it, didnt work. Then he tried again putting it at a weird angle and worked.

Then he demonstrated how to scan it and grabbed one from the pile that were already scanned and scanned it again. I actually said "that one's already scanned, hope it won't charge me twice?". Scanned the other two, total price was for 5 cards, not 6. So I paid and the activation failed on one card.

First thing I did was check the receipt as I suspected one of the cards were charged twice on the receipt. But on the receipt they were all correct.

So guys, make sure you (or the staff) don't accidentally scan the same card twice. As this might cause activation declines.

                • @smallstakes54: activation failed is in fact communication error with activation server. The blank card should be good to activate again. You can't double scan the same card in the same transaction. The only time it is double scan is from 2 different transaction.

in fact what other store did for me last time is return and purchase the same failed card in the same transaction and that should be $0 on the receipt and push through the activation for that card again. Sadly most stores won't want to do it.

    • I just did one today. Went to Coles service desk, they replaced to another card.

They will be sending the declined card to the head office.

I'm surprised @WM isn't that active on this thread as I'm expecting him to be?!

    • +9

He is busy at the checkout and can't be bothered to comment.

  • May have missed this, but can you buy other gift cards online with these ? Woolworths and Coles in particular ?

    • +1

Of course. It's just a Mastercard in their eyes.

    • +1

Yes, I up swapped mine at Woolies Mobile online this afternoon, putting the giftcards onto Paypal for payment. I bought Woolies giftcards at 4% off!

      • +1

Thanks - That's exactly what I am going to do now

  • I’m trying to access the balance website.
Don’t want to be entering details into a scam website.
Is the page meant to be affiliated with coles?

    • +1

type the url as it shows on the back of the card. Don't google search it, you might end up clicking on the wrong one

      • Seems like they have a new site? I get redirected

      • It redirects to “mybalancenow” website.
But I gambled and used it anyways.

        Worked fine

        • +1

how long after buying did you check? I still get 'a system error has occured'

I just bought an hour ago though

          • @impoze: 18:08 AEDT

I just used it to pay a Sydney water bill with success.

            • @Owgasm: yeah, I mean the mybalancenow, did it work for you?

              • @impoze: Yeah, I purchased at 18:08 and checked it when I posted. So about 19:20-30?

                • @Owgasm: ah my browser was blocking all the captcha

  • I got the last 3 at my store, but I paid separately to get either 3 free coffees or 4c off petrol.

I'm not sure, but I assume you cannot combine 4c fuel dockets eg. 4c x3 = 12c off?

    • No

      • +2

Cheers so I'll just get the 3 free coffees

  • +1

Stores seemed to have stocked up, I am guessing some where too lazzy to put out these cards on Tuesday night shift.

  • Can we pay QLD rego using these cards as split payment?

    • Probably can do that in person.

But any way is QLD rego actually more than $250 ?? seems insane ?

more often than not what you should do is pay for 3 month rego twice e.g. that should give ya 6 month of rego. (At least that how in SA)

      • I do yearly VIC rego

        • Isnt VIC roads only 3 or 6 months rego ?

or you do 2 x 6 months rego to get 1 year rego ?

  • finally able to find ONE … ! :) now, one card is not good enough to pay my debt but probably use it to buy discounted gift card from shopback… but can someone confirm is it legit to buy discounted gift card from shopback using this cards ?

    • +1

Yup you can do that. I have done it & others in post have mentioned this as well

  • +3

I went just now and there were none at my local store. I went to ask at the service counter as well. It shouldn't be this hard to spend money.

    • and my local store had a heap probably 50+ but I'm not giving the location lol

    • +1

i need 40 of these to pay debt …. but only found one .. :(

now the issue that people need to remember that they need to use it on the spot and if you trying to keep saved for christmas shopping then you may not have money inside if someone hacks it like what happened to many in past… !

i can use all 40 in 20 minutes by paying debt down but that won't be the case for everyone so be careful what you want… in my opinion.

    • +1

You do realise you're on a website called Ozbargains?

You say $18 discount on one $250 card is being a "tight arse" and hardly worth it, but if they bought 10 cards they wouldn't "need to save money". Where's the logic here?

      • -1

I'm saying if someone $2500 dollars to even out lay the money in the first place doesn't really have a money problem, there are plenty of people that couldn't even gather $50 spare dollars i know it would personally take me months to come up with a couple of grand

    • Making me feel guilty for trying to get 48k worth to pay for my mew car.

  • +4

Our local 3 stores all have plenty so far. Do the rounds again tomorrow (and the next day…..and the next)

  • Day 1 loot complete: https://imgur.com/a/8uUFZdN

    Do I win?

    • How many did you get?

      • Maybe around 70 yellow and 25 purple?

        • +6

Found the Asian lady from earlier in the thread

    • +2

How many stores have you been to? lol
      You won!

      • 10 or so with 2 people. Some of the stores allowed 10 per visit.

    • +1

      Yes

    • +3

      Impressive. $23k worth.

      • +5

Yep a saving of $1600 tax free
Not bad for a days work

        • Yes, for 2 people which included probably 4 hours in total of driving, parking and queuing.

    • -1

      that's some good photoshop … lol :D :D … good try… !

none available at most stores so unless you work in coles or know someone then it is different story but in that case store manager won't let you loot all this in one day in my opinion… !

      • +2

i wish i was that good at photo shop lol. i have a massive tax bill to pay

        • +1

          same here … i need to pay around 10k … but can't find any 250 one's … :(

$100 is too risky as someone can hack it before i can finish all scanning through ATO website :(

          • +1

@SydBoy: I did it last year and didnt have any issues, lucky i guess..

            • @mrvaluepack: mate luck is big thing … and risk is too high in the event someone hack it because i think i would save $500 for $10000 worth gift card and too much to loose if someone is successful in hacking … !

i have dealt with coles customer services and they are pathetic when it comes to answering question and also any bank when you have some issue with credit card it is always your fault unless you are rich client they want to keep … !

              • @SydBoy: well from what i'm seeing here, it seems easier to claim if its been hacked and i also think the risk of being hacked this time round might be a bit overblown.

                • +1

@mrvaluepack: well it could be but as i can't take risk … it's just personal experience on dealing with similar issues and it was nightmare and sleepless nights for me personally but sure some people might be able to manage their stress better i guess.. !

good luck if you can scan all this without hack then you bought yourself holiday flight to thailand :)

      • -1

Not impossible, my flybuys had over $98,000 worth of transactions when we could rinse and repeat.

    • +1

      Broden would be so proud!

    • Yes after you redeem them all without hassle.

      • Fingers crossed. I've already redeemed 10.

      • Now its a race between you and the hackers..

        • +1

I think all the cards may be safe before the end of next flybuys bonus pts offer, possibly early Dec.

      • +5

Never abused any system. I've always asked all the coles checkout personnel politely if this was the limit and never went back to the same shop for seconds.

      • +2

If not them it woulda been someone else. The world in which people leave valuable stuff for you to take doesn't exist

        • +4

You can't try and reason with the unreasonable lol

      • +2

Our country store still has them on the shelf on the last day of sale, are you saying i should feel guilty if i wanted to buy them all?

        Your just salty.

    • +1

Jesus, you certainly win. I got 19. What are you going to do with them all? I'm struggling, I already paid off all my debts with the last one (aside from mortgages and credit cards which don't seem doable).

      • Maybe consider locking them if do not use them immediately.

        • Yeah probably easier to prepay ATO, water, land tax, rates, electricity, rego, licence. I don't want to have to talk to a call centre if avoidable!

          • -1

@Bdawg: I don't think you can prepay rego and licence. But not sure it you go to VicRoads and ask them to issue a payment notice. Also if your rego and/or licence is due in over 3 months my guess is that even if you go to VicRoads center they won't issue you a payment notice.

            • @bbking18: Why would you assume I'm in Victoria? lol

              • @Bdawg: Haha, my bad. I just use VicRoads as I don't know the official name of VicRoads equivalent in other states. But does any other state allow prepayment for rego and licence well in advance, like over 3 months beforehand, especially for rego?
