  • This seems like a good deal even if used. I have no experience with untech but assuming they are truthful this is awesome

  • Good price for a touch screen laptop.

    For those seeking extra information
    * Latitude 7389 2-in-1 System Guide
    * Documentation Page Note it mentions swollen Lithium-ion batteries (handling instructions etc) for this model (common with many models), Cheap fix if becomes an issue
    * Owners Manual

Edit: I am not suggesting these laptops have not been checked, and I don't doubt at the present time (during checking) these laptops are fine, but certain models were flagged back in 2020 and that is when the handling/disposal instructions for this model were added to this model page for dell. Yes, some laptops are known to have issues (SP3 for example), but others do not have this as a known issue (later SP models for example). For most this isn't a deal breaker, as many will upgrade the battery before degradation, but I'm simply pointing it out as a known issue.

  • +6

Swollen batteries is common issue with all Lithium Batteries. Regardless of what laptop it is. All the laptops we are selling have been professionally tested. We can assure that there wont be any swollen batteries. Also, we are selling these machines with Good to excellent battery health.

    • +1

Some models are known to have issues (hence the instructions were added in 2020 around the time this became known) and I am in no way suggesting these aren't checked and fully functional now, but it's just noted as 2 years down the line, the battery may become an issue. Most people will change out the battery prior to this and I cannot see it be a deal breaker for many (as it so easy to change), but I am simply pointing out it has been one of the models that received this instruction update on it's page. Most Lithium batteries do not swell, but some models are known to be problematic. Many dell models of this age were flagged, but it is unlikely to deter people from buying them, just someone to consider

      • All lithium batteries susceptible to swelling and catching fire, they are sensitive to heat exposure, and also incorrect charging and storage procedures can cause this such as running them completely flat

        • As I have stated, some dell batteries are a known issue, many are not.

    • All the laptops we are selling have been professionally tested

I assume that you have opened it up and visually checked all of them? Because the swell won't actually show externally.

Source: Just had two 5289s with swollen batteries and nothing obvious from the outside. Can't remember exactly, but they were either fair or good as reported by the bios.

    • Hello.
Does the $300 model also has backlit keyboard and USB-C charging?
      Thank you.

      • +2

yes, it does have back lit and USB C

  • How much does it weigh?

    • +6

Did a quick google search, 1.41kg

      • +4

as opposed to a slow google search?

  • How much were these laptop when released?

    • +2

Probably a good 2k plus, but these are commercial machines and they are always significant higher than typical consumer grade machines.

Everything is ok but the CPU, which is 7th generation. I doubt to run Win11 smoothly.

    • -4

Agreed. It would be a slightly sluggish

    • +4

I ran a 6300u for a while and it was fine, no noticeable difference to win 10.

The issue is that 7th gen and earlier aren't officially supported, so even if you can install it and run it. We have no idea what other tricks MS have up their sleeves.

    • +3

Will run win11 with no issues

    • +4

I have run win11 on 4th gen CPUs and the performance is just fine

    • After a few months experience with Window 11, I've gone back to Win10.

Not being able to run Win11, is a plus for me!

      • Sounds user issue then hardware issue

    I bought this one: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/133650728801

    3200 x 1800, and, NO FAN.

hp has incredible support for their business range of laptops.

    Also, a lot lighter.

Upgraded it to a 1TB NVME

    • +2

DDR3 RAM, an arguably worse CPU and it's older than this Latitude.

      • -1

Good chance these are ddr3 as well, it's all soldered anyways.

        • Interestingly Latitude 7389 2-in-1 posted by OP also runs on LPDDR3 according to owner manual at Dell.

  • How does this compare to the [Refurb] Lenovo Thinkpad T470S 14" FHD IPS i7-6600U 8GB 256GB Win 11 Pro 4G Cellular for $185.07

Lenovo is 50% cheaper. For sure a better Bang for buck

  • I'm looking for a machine to learn Linux on, is this overkill?

    • Get a virtual machine

  • Does anyone know if the RAM is upgradable?

Also, can you charge via USB-C?

    • +1

Also, can you charge via USB-C?

      “Comes with Usb-C Charger”

    • +1

      RAM is not upgradable

  • Can the usb-c port used for external display + charging as well? Or is it only for charging?

  • +6

Pretty cool how it says $200 off ($599 down to $399), then when you change it to 512GB it says $41 off ($500 down to $459).

@untech this an error in the pricing? Or are the 512GB units normally $500 and you're pulling the piss by saying the ones on sale are "Normally $599"?

    • +4

Depends. If anyone believes a used 2017 machine is worth $599 let alone if its 512 or 256GB SSD

    • The jack was back

    • +2

There’s always one. Matrix had to be redesigned because of your type.

    • Whoops! Good pickup! Will sort this today to be more accurate!

  • How can an i7 only have 2 cores??

    • +3

7th Gen U series. You need 8th to get quad

  • It's a shame it's only 7 gen dual core and not a 8 gen

  • Are there any Linux drivers for touch?

    • +1

You are kidding? Dell has been great with Linux for many years. They officially support Ubuntu.
It's right there on the main page for this laptop:

      https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-au/000124355/dell-lati…

Are there any major-brand laptops that have problems with Linux these days? Aside from the usual suspect in Cupertino.

      • Cool, awesome, thx for that.

  • +5

    Question for the OP.

What makes these laptops "refurbished" vs just a second hand laptop that has had some form of inspection ?

I always thought that refurbished meant that the item would be checked, stripped down, worn keys replaced, battery replaced etc etc to return it to something closer to the original condition. In other words - something actually done to it.

I get the impression that many sellers of laptops & phones are simply getting second hand items, checking them over, giving them a rating (in other words not actually doing anything physical to "refurbish" them) and listing them as refurbished.

    • +2

Based on my experience in buying from untech, I think your impression is spot on. My machine was noticeably dirty and had very loose screen hinges. Both issues should have picked up in an inspection and were easily resolved by me. That said, the untech representative I contacted was receptive to constructive criticism and seemed genuinely interested in making improvements in their process.

    • This was my concern hence I ended up buying a cheap band new laptop using GC and because I'm flying OS, will be able to claim tax refund.

      https://www.harveynorman.com.au/hp-15-6-inch-r5-5500u-8gb-51…

      $698 - ($50 - $69.8 (10% discounted GC) - $63.45 (TRS refund)) = $514.75.

If my calculation is right, the laptop would cost just over $500 although it's not a touch screen and bigger/heavier…

      .

        Very Smart Move

    • +1

Refurb is generally for things with issues and have been fixed.
Buuuuut wiping the drive and reinstalling Windows checking for major issues can be a refurb, kinda.
Usually just cleaned up. They’re all second hand, refurb is just a marketing term. Apple do the same and so does every other vendor.

    • +1

      Hi Andy,

We have a fairly comprehensive inspection and testing process. This involves battery testing, hard drive testing, wiping, reloading fresh windows, updating, examining screen for bruising scratches, removing stickers etc. It can mean adding ram, replacing a battery if needed as well as generally we clean and polish everything. Refurbish generally means it has had a thorough once over and anything needing fixing fixed so it is in good operational condition / returned to original condition (or as close to as possible). Some units need minimal, some need a bit. With twjr's response - perhaps on that occasion a staff member for whatever reason did not complete a thorough enough check. It can happen - but its pretty rare. Some of us have been doing this for 5+ years, others are new and in training its just what happens in business occasionally. We have a warrantee so will attend to any issues immediately to ensure you are satisfied with your device.

This would be a excellent laptop for kids at school imo
