Pro tip. Get out of Manila as fast as you can.

    • +3

      why/

      • +13

I've been to the Philippines maybe 30 times. Beautiful country, people are awesome.

Manila is near impossible to get around (traffic), population density is off the charts, not one of the safest large cities of the world. But really above all, the other 7000+ islands are paradise. Just a person opinion as I can't see why one would want to spend time there, when a much, much better version of PH beckons. I have a strong bias though for places like Batangas and Tagaytay in the southern parts of Luzon.

        • +6

its really eye opening the level of poverty/overcrowding, people selling on the streets. some dystopian stuff.

          • +7

@Stopback: @mokr Yes I agree the povery is pretty full on, and I've been to Africa, India, Pakistan, Cambodia and I don't think I've seen so more people sleeping on the streets as the Philippines.
I went many years ago and I also agree with @seamonkey comment about getting out of Manila ASAP.
The islands are beautiful, the people friendly, the food, well the food um,
well I'm not aware of a Filipino restaurant anywhere near me, there's a reason for that
I suppose my main dislike of the Philippines is the Americanisation of the culture, I'm not anti American, but as a tourist you want to
see the traditional culture of the land you visit, but the Philippines is strongly influenced by American culture and Roman Catholic religion.
So unlike many other countries I've visited in Asia as a tourist the Philippines is strangely familiar.

            • +2

@PukeyLuke: Yes, you have described the most accurate description of the Philippines. I went there a few years ago, and actually stayed in Manila for a few days and was amazed at how American-ised the country was. It almost felt like they were striving to be like it for some reason. Also, yes the food. Not my favourite when it comes to the SEA cuisines. The islands are honestly where everyone needs to be. Palawan is beautiful!

              • @geeluv:

It almost felt like they were striving to be like it for some reason.

Sounds like you need to do some reading about their history.

                https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Philippines_(1898–1946)

                • +3

@PainToad: Don' think countries like India, Pakistan or Kenya are striving to be English-ised. They have their own culture with English history.

                  • -2

@geeluv: India and Pakistan play cricket.

                    Philippines play basketball.

A countries history defines its present.

            • +2

              @PukeyLuke:

              well the food um

It’s all about knowing/researching where to go as with anywhere.

If you want to stay in Manila I can recommend doing the Binondo food crawl where you navigate the world's oldest Chinatown for some awesome grub.
Or going to Dampa seafood market with fishmongers lining one side of the street where you barter for your desired seafood then take your purchase(s) to the other side to one of the restaurants and they will cook it up for you to your liking.

              • +4

@shkippy: Great post, I've spent months living in the Philippines and while its reputation for bad food is probably mostly true, there's definitely lots of tasty food to be found if you're willing to look.

General tips: find authentic lechon (whole roast pig), it's amazing (the best is in Cebu but you can find it anywhere). Chicken/pork adobo on garlic rice is great. Beef calderata is good. For breakfast, anything ending in -silog (tapsilog is beef, tosilog is cured pork, etc) is some kind of meat on rice with a fried egg, simple and tasty. Top with fermented chilli vinegar and soy sauce. The little skewers you find cooking over charcoal on the side of the road are great, as are the roast peanuts. Chinatown is full of good stuff as shkippy said. The lumpia (fried spring rolls) can be fantastic.

Manila has its own thriving food scene if you want to spend a bit more (e.g. fancy ramen joints or whatever) but I'm more into the local stuff. The turo turo ("point point", street restaurants where you point to what you want) vary in quality but there are some good ones, the trouble is that they like to leave stuff sitting at room temperature all day, but you can always ask them to heat it up.

        • +1

Have you seen Bonifacio Global City (BFG) in Taguig, Manila? There are many YouTube videos about it. It looks so great! Not what most would expect.

          • +2

@Goffree: With travel of course everyone is going to have a different opinion. I've seen a few small oasis in Manila and it always makes me feel the same way - like I'm a snowboarder and I'm snowboarding in a massive indoor warehouse in Dubai - I mean fact, but at what price?

Philippines is beautiful. Manila isn't. I'm sure even the majority of pinoy feel that way. Maybe that's part of the issue as well. I'm not filipino, but my children are and that makes me care about a place that's a part of them - despite the fact they aren't as close to that world as I hope they are when they are older. With in laws and friends living there - I want the best for all..Manila isn't it's best but in time, over decades with focus and resources , it could be.

            • +1

@seamonkey: I've been to PH 14 times and always enjoy my time in Manila, the traffic is overbearing and the pollution but I just see it as part of the experience. And I love certain dishes especially crispy lechon and adobo with garlic rice. SM malls you lose a whole day trying to get around, they're just on another level compared to what we have. The only crime I've ever been close to experiencing was a taxi driver at the airport trying to pass off fixed rates 'per person' (instead of metered) to get to Makati totalling almost $100AUD for me and 2 friends lol, dropped in some Tagalog words in my response and that shut him right up.

If the poorer areas are too confronting for some people there's plenty of well developed parts of the city like Taguig and Makati that feel similar to any other developed city, other than the guards with rifles at certain places like banks. Live music in Manila is also great, lots of great resto bars and the prices are great compared to what you'd pay for a night out here or even other places in SEA these days. Had a great NYE years back when I stayed at a airbnb in Gramercy building next to Trump Tower, roof top nightclub with 360 views of their wild random fireworks in every direction.

              • @zaprct: We can agree to disagree.
World's worst traffic is no small thing. Terrible pollution in the capital is no small thing. The food you speak of is easily available in other parts of the country. I enjoy the SM malls that aren't in Manila. I've spent plenty of time at Market! Market! Mall of Asia or Festival Mall, but I'm happier for the quieter smaller experience at places like SM Batangas.

This post is getting a little weird because I see an almost fanboy view of Manila in some ways and that's fine - but to have some make out Manila is virtually crime free is a step too far. I agree many large cities around the world have similar problems - that's precisely my point. I don't like Manila and I've spent plenty of time there. I'd others here are of a different opinion, cool, I'm happy to hear that. No implying you said this but a crime free city where you can enjoy nice food only if you are in the big centre simply isn't accurate and is a step too far.

I take your point on live music etc but being not of the age that gives a f about that , that further explains why in missing nothing. My favourite activity is hitting the quietest if roads where I basically don't see another vehicle, on my motorcycle, visiting my friends in the mountains and at the beaches in the southern parts of Luzon.

That's very different to the Manila experience because I'm different. I've tried Manila so many times that there isn't a part left to discover. Living in that city, personally, would be my idea of hell. I don't think that's super controversial. ;) Love the country as much as my own.

I've spent so much of my life in places like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur that I've been impacted by that kind of SEA filter.

          • @Goffree: Its called BGC. As far as I'm concerned it is better than Singapore, Melbourne or Sydney. It's clean and organised. It's not cheap though.

        • +4

I have owned a condo in Manila since 2013, just got back from 5 weeks, travelled in Jeeps 100's of times, trains dozens of times, never been robbed or threatened or felt at risk once, Manila is very very safe, im not a local and yep the traffic is off the charts bad and will be for decades.

          • @Ender Wiggin: Sounds like a very fair take on life there. Not disagreeing on much. Think the safety factor for me isn't about a shank to the skull. It's the little.things. That random resident that's on something. A broken bureaucracy that can still scar. I saw fast moving armed evasive jumps out of vans in anticipation for threats to local reps. Everything from scams to obnoxious MLMs, right through to request for loans from unexpected sources. Realise it doesn't sound like it but I do love the place very very much. Big centres might be for you. Unpopulated quiet places are for me. I suspect we are vastly different ages which likely also has impacts in terms of perspectives. Doesn't take a sense I'm going to be harmed to make me feel a place is unsafe. A risk to my quiet enjoyment makes me feel unsafe, and that's common for.me.in MM and extremely uncommon in the parts I'm most familiar with. Would love to hear your stories sometime for real. That existence you have had is really very very interesting.

            • +1

@seamonkey: You describe something that could as well be Madrid, Hong Kong, New York or any other major city. Not a big fan of Manila as well, traffic's a killer. But I never felt unsafe there and everyone is nice and cheerful. It's also great everyone speaks good english, makes life so much easier. Manila is too congested and they need to decentralise, most of the major business is concentrated in that one region. Beaches are world class, perhaps better than Thailand and Indo because those are more touristy and accessible.

          • @Ender Wiggin: Being a 6'3 white guy also helps, in a sick/demoralising kind of way. Which has been the hardest for me. I have a team of 9+ in Manila that I highly respect. Going into the condo, going into the malls etc, I have a free pass with security, some will even take my bags, feels like I'm back in colonialism. Meanwhile my local team get metal detected/searched and given the ringer. Their is an embedded class society in the Philippines, but if you look at the history, its not hard to explain.

Would avoid Cebu Pacific. Would cancel flights and refunds would take months.

    • Yes flights were cancelled with Covid, but the same goes for every airline.
Refunds did take months, but they eventually came … can the same be said for every airline?

      • +1

Yeah but Cebu has still be cancelling flights post Covid. They ran a bunch of sale fares for Christmas and have since cancelled many of them, people stuck trying to get refunds. They’re a shambles.

    • Agree. Have a friend who purchased tickets with Cebu in August for flying in February. Cancelled 3 weeks later and told refund could take 4 months. It was 7 tickets so waiting that long for thousands of dollars is absolutely ridiculous!

      • There needs to be laws about this. Credit card refunds take less than a week. If their system can't do it within two then it's blatantly not good enough. They're happy to take money less than 24h before a flight.

    • took them a year and a half to do mine.

      • I swear it's their business model to hold onto the funds to earn interest on.

    • Yep the price isn't worth it.

When it all goes well, sweet, but when it doesn't, oh boy.

  • +1

What's the difference here between Melbourne to Manila and Melbourne - Manila (and same for Sydney)

    • +1

One shows the return price, the other the one-way.

      • +1

        Username checks out.

    • assuming the more expensive one is return and the cheaper is one way

FYI Cebu Pac cancelled this years Christmas for many Melbournians by cancelling their Melbourne route.

    • I know bro pre-pandemic I used that route so many times I always used to pay only like $359 with Cebu Pacific from Melbourne (including checked baggage). I hope they resume it soon

      • it impacted a lot of people who booked well in advance, they are now shelling out x2 to go PAL or rerouting to syd if there's availabilty

      • $359 one way from MEL to MNL?

        • it used to be around $350-$400 return Melbourne -Cebu return

    • Network-related schedule changes have been the reason Cebu Pacific cancelled flights between Melbourne and Manila from October 30, 2022 to March 25, 2023.

      • Purchased tickets basically Christmas Say 2021. Couple of weeks ago, yep, sorry about him lding onto your money for 10 months - we ain't flying there no more. Managed to travel a week before Christmas (which is only a day different to original plan) via Sydney but massive pain in the tush. Had the most flexible tickets but got really expensive for a family when doing last minute domestic flights. I guess cebuPacific is as good and as bad as Jetstar. Except with refunds. Man, takes them like a year.

  • Any Japan deals by any chance OP? :)

    • I mean you can search for the city/dates you want - now that October 11 has passed and more airlines are flying there, prices will start improving, I'm sure!

      • What's the hate with October 11?

        • Japan opened up to foreigners again on that date

  • +4

The taxi from NAIA airport to the hotel takes longer than the flight from OOL to MNL

    • +1

I've told you a million times not to exaggerate

      • My grab from airport to ortigas took 20 minutes! But I have qantas to thank for that, flight was delayed and only got in at 10pm.

Seriously, after peak hours, the traffic is fine. Barring some crazy weather event. Why they get people working 9-5 in Manila is beyond me. Completely unworkable.

        • Hey @nomisg - I'm travelling to Manila for work in a couple of weeks' time. My first time. Staying in Makati. Local colleagues have recommended grab as a way of getting around. Hotel car for pickup is very expensive by comparison.

I need to pay for my grab on card so I can get a receipt/claim. But colleagues tell me that you still need local pesos to pay for tolls to/from airport and other toll booths around Manila and that some drivers refuse to pay for you. What's your experience?

          • +1

@apu: Last i was there when i used grab and we went through toll roads they add it in the charges.

Well at least I don't remember them asking me to pay the toll as we approach the toll booths.

            • @xoom: Thanks @xoom that's very helpful. And I take it with your experience with grab drivers they don't try to play games with you? And presumably you organise the grab when you are outside the terminal with your bags and they come fairly quickly?

              • @apu: You open the app. You book. And you get to see the name and license plate of the vehicle.

It also shows where it is on the map.

As for coming quickly. As quick as traffic will allow.

It also tells you how much the fare will be based on start of journey and end destination.

If you like to tip them. And you got some local currency. P20 to P50 and they would appreciate it. But not necessary.

I paid in cash as I had local currency. So I usually round it up if say the fare was like P950. I give the driver P1000 bill and tell them to keep the change.

  • I paid 2000 return for melb-perth on economy… this seems like international travel is much more worthwhile

    • Really?

      I paid $350 sydney-perth return.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/723347

    • The world is bigger than our (admittedly huge) island, and seeing it is its own reward. The other reward is that travelling in places like the Philippines is so much cheaper than domestic travel here. Don't leave it to 'one day'.

  • Network-related schedule changes have been the reason Cebu Pacific cancelled flights between Melbourne and Manila from October 30, 2022 to March 25, 2023.

    • bs. operational cost more like it.

NSW is going to have one of them. Just not sure when. Fun fact.

      • I like the chicken, don’t need a slab of boiled white rice though appreciate over there it makes sense

        • I actually got into the rice as a side with gravy. Had some maccas back in Aussie when I got back a few weeks ago, really missed the gravy. Not sure why they are into canned style spaghetti over there. Serve it all the fast food joints.

Philippines is a Catholic country. It's 70 percent for marriage purpose.

Thoughts and prayers while they are scamming you.

    • +2

Now that's a wacked comment. I can imagine you have stats to back this statement up right?

      • +3

Of course not. Just another dumb Ozbargain comment.

Dont risk it, unless you want to loose your money.. you’ve been warned.. It’s a trap.

  • +2

After their debacle with Christmas flights I think you’d be crazy if you booked these flights.

  • It's meant to be a dangerous country (or so my Filipino friend tells me).

    • +1

      Depends in the area.

      • Been 15 plus times for work in Manila, staying over a week each time. Never had an issue and I'm the kinda guy that finds trouble (e.g. drunk, walking the streets home alone at 4am). Places like San Fran, are far worse in my opinion.

    • at least as an expat, I have found it safe and people very welcoming. I've heard it can get a bit rough in the regions if you don't have your whits about you, gets a bit wild west.

  • Hi OP. Sorry asking out of the topic question. Any chance on getting good flight deals to NZ/Queenstown by any chance?

  • +1

Manila was my least favourite city in Asia, just fly in and then immediately go anywhere else in the country. You won't miss anything except pollution, traffic jams, and poverty.

    • What areas around Manila are good to stay for 1st timers?

      • Makati

        • I'd say BGC (more hip and modern) over Makati (old school expat enclave), especially if you are a little younger. I stay in Ortigas for a more central spot for longer work trips and its relatively easy to get to BGC or Makati. Its all about traffic management :-(.

I have no idea why someone would spend much time in Manila, unless its for work/family etc.

    • Obviously never been to Jakarta

  • absolutely NEVER AGAIN with Cebu Pacific. Broke our plans (27 of us) this Nov/Dec bookings.. just like thousands here left distraught with their conduct to cancel close to the flight dates!!!! Then all of a sudden doing a sale for next year! WTF.

    absolute disgrace
    edit
we wouldn't have minded if there was
slight adjustment on costs… but to effen cancel then open up new sales that are likely not going to make them money… and could even cancel again!!!! without any penalty imposed on them?????

  • Cebu Pacific terrible airline and never on time if flying out of Manila and I have been to Philippines over 30 trips in last 11 years.

    • They aren't terrible, but you are correct in that they are rarely on time. Factor that into your transit times whilst you're pocketing the extra cash that you saved by flying a budget airline.

The planes now have USB charging at the seats, which is long overdue but very welcome, and fixed seats that no longer recline, but are on a reasonable angle. Snacks are still rubbish, but I think most people have learnt to carry their own on.

I've flown there on average 4 or 5 times a year for about 10 years before covid, and once you figure you'll never leave on time, they are fine.

Generally i trash talk Cebu Pacific at every opportunity i get as they owe me 15000 pesos and are basically the worlds worst airline, however last weeks Manila Qantas fiasco has moved Ceb Pacific up a few notches as Qantas now holds my personal record for longest check in 3hr 11mins and longest delay 47 hours.

    • +3

47 hours?!? What?!? Some animals don't even live that long. I've had relationships shorter than that. Jesus freakin' Christ!

  • Pro tip - Avoid Cebu Pacific.

In 2019 we had flights from Sydney to Manila and separately booked flight next morning to Bohol (all on Cebu Pacific). They rescheduled the Syd to Manila flight a month before the flight and refused to alter the next flight or accomodate in any way except a refund of the 1st flight. Vowed to never book with them again.

Booked via Qantas and cost me a lot more due to short notice but was pleasantly surprised by the service (they were decent back then)

Avoid Cebu Pacific do yourself a favour
As others have mentioned they cancel months of flights at a time. I bought a ticket back to Melbourne from Manila for Xmas about 8 months ago. Now I'm having to shell out $1k for a one way ticket home via Sydney. No idea when the original will be refunded either.
On top of this their website is an absolute broken joke

  • What does a 'trip hack' mean? That means booking for a different flight but getting off on the stop over?

  • Any cheap flights for Bali coming up soon you reckon? maybe based on past years is there certain times to look out for? Looking at early next year…
