Still a discount though. In a world where companies like Apple price new phones starting at $1749 and they're NEVER discounted, perhaps we shouldn't be so critical of discounts. 10% is not terrible.

        • +26

Over charging you ALL the time is better? Got it.

          • +11

@SirNonymous: Don't question the logic of Apple cultists. You'll never win.

        • +4

@r0xz Yeah you certainly won't see discounts going on with Apple mate - agreed. They'll charge you the same price for your iPhone 14 Pro today as they will in 6 months, as they will in 11 months and 29 days (the day before iPhone 15 launches). You won't save even a dollar, so I imagine that must make you furious if 10% has you yelling 's#&tty discount.'

        • +7

I disagree, it sells better but it's not a better product at least for me. Sideloading, ROMs, USB-C, Emulation and extra customization are just too good to leave behind for overpriced premium status because everyone else uses an iPhone.

            • +7

@nikoris: Most of those are very debatable and yet the price difference is double. $/perf apple loses by a longway

                • +7

@nikoris: Thats because you bought a mid-range phone expecting it to somehow live up to flagship expectations. Classic Apple customer tbh, blame the tools, not the tool using them. If you were being genuine, you would admit that Apple wins in sales numbers yeah, but in almost every measurable aspect they're still far behind…bro.

                  • -6

@Shak2093: Lol and how do you know what kind of expectations I had of it?
The levels you boys go to defend your favourite companies is astonishing.

                    • +3

@nikoris: The irony of this - "the levels you boys go to defend your favourite companies is astonishing." Says Apple fanboy saying everything about iPhones is better when thats not true and justifying paying 50% more. iOS 16 is now basically Android 10 with the 'new features'

                      • -3

                        @[Deactivated]: ‘Says Apple fanboy’
Bro I literally bought a galaxy and a pixel before I returned to iPhone. I’m well informed and speak with great experience. The exact opposite of you.
If I return to android, it’ll most likely be for Samsung. Pixels are way overrated by the android community.

            • +1

              @nikoris: Too biased

      • Does this deal also apply to the Buds & Watch, or is there something better for them?

agreed .. shitty discount with previous preorder bonus … i only get the 10% .. but not earn 10% in google credit

    • +5

If you upgrade your Google One plan to the 2TB plan, then you'll get the 10% back in google store credit (30 days after purchase). You can then downgrade again, once you receive the 10% credit.

      • -1

Oh I upgraded to the 2TB, then cancelled it after it said I would be receiving the 10% credit in 30 days. I don't need to stay on the 2TB plan for 2 months do I?

        • +2

You do need to be on the 2TB plan after 30-days when the credit is granted. See below from T&C

Store Credit is granted 30 days after order is dispatched and expires 365 days from the grant date. You must be an Eligible Member at the grant date to accrue Store Credits. To earn Store Credit, Eligible Members must complete the cart checkout with their Google One membership account.

So yeah, you need to stay on for 2 months. Should still worth it.

          • @wxyzab: Would it work to get the 2TB plan before the 30 days us up to still get the 10 %?

I upgraded to 2TB plan, got the email to say I'll get the 10% back on my purchase and then I downgraded my plan

30 days is up on the 10th of November - any point in me now upgrading to 2TB agaim before then?

I didn't realise we needed to stay subscribed to the higher plan

            • @Sittingonthemoon: I think it will still work to upgrade now. The plan downgrade doesn't happen immediately. It should happen when your paid one month is over. Check your current plan details. Upgrading now just means renewing after the current month plan is over.

  • +8

this is definitely a malakia. Make it 20% and then we're talking.

    • +2

      It is 19% (10% with coupon + 10% CB).

    • +4

This isnt your Greek facebook group mate

      • I'm sorry if I offended you. I tried editing the comment, but it won't let me now.

        • lol im Greek, peace bro

  • +2

Google, why don't just make the RRP down to $999 for Pixel 7 Pro base model? Its like so heavily discounted since pre-order plus some trade-in going on, I am not sure if anyone wants to pay more than this.

    • +1

Please do this so I can get a $300 refund from JB 😁

    • +12

Heaps of people will pay more and do. $1299 for a phone as good as the Pixel 7 Pro is a pretty damn good deal in today's marketplace.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at $1899. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is $1849. $1299 for the Pixel 7 Pro which is pretty much universally lauded as a fantastic flagship phone every bit as good as any out there makes it a damn good deal and well undercutting its competition price wise

      • -7

From a purely technical perspective they are cutting a number of corners to make that price (poorer quality display, underperforming and inefficient Samsung fabricated SOC) but to the average user it's still an outstanding flagship phone that happens to be $500 cheaper than the others.

  • +3

Regret not getting the preorder, the $300 credit would have been nice. Seems all the deals after aren't as enticing and I don't have a phone to trade in to Jb

    • +1

JB trading is crap. S9+ is $0.

      • +2

JB trade in basically isn't crap, it's worse now than what it was but if you take into account they allow you to cancel the trade-in and keep the discount voucher, it isn't crap.

    • +15

Wow? Every major phone manufacturer does. Lol

      • Yeah - with cheap cloud storage and 100GB+ per month of 4G/5G data I can easily live with 128GB.

My daily driver 256GB Flip 3 is currently just over 79GB used. I could probably get that under 64GB by nuking a significant number of unused apps.

        • Noticed your avatar,

been meaning to more heavily use/try that app "shopback",

have you had bad experiences, could you please elaborate?

          • @jalyst: I've given up wasting my breath on the topic.

My big two gripes relate to their lack of integrity - ie the pissweak response to a data breach and astro-turfing review sites to hide customer dissatisfaction.

If you think shit like that doesn't matter when $8.97 is on offer then sign up. I wish you good luck.

  • Is the 7 overall a better phone than the 6? It had quite a few issues at the start.

    • +5

Reviews seem generally very positive - the camera and display are right at the top of the charts, and my own experiences have been extremely positive so far, but no obvious bugs or performance issues.

Considering it's quite a bit cheaper than competing devices from Samsung and Apple, it's definitely a flagship bargain.

        • +1

The phone is worth the money because it's managing to live in your head rent free 😄.

Seriously, why are you so triggered by this?

          • -3

@Brianqpr: Bruh, I always cringe when some says ‘but it lived in your head rent free’ do I live in your head rent free too because you replied to me?

    • I didn't have a 6 but amongst the issues, it seems fingerprint sensor fix was very much welcomed for 7.

I have a 7P and it's quite fast and precise. Have had a few occasions where right thumb didn't seem to register most of the time. Just had to re-add the scan again.

  • +7

You don't buy a Pixel because of the hardware, you buy it because of the software. Same as buying an Apple device. Google has the capacity, resources and drive to fix any software bugs/problems/issues within a few months of release. If you can wait it out for a few monthly updates most issues will be fixed or improved.

    • +1

Wasn't Pixel 6 buggy af? I remember watching a review on it a while back by a prominent tech reviewer (either Marquess Brownlee or Dave2D).

      • Yeah P6 was sooo bad with the bugs I ended up shelving it and going back to my Pixel 5. Got the Pixel 7 though via the JB trade and got rid of the Pixel 6. Pixel 7 is definitely better than the Pixel 6 in terms of software - have had no issue so far and fingerprint sensor actually works.

        • Why didn't you just return the Pixel 6? It would probably be covered consumer law.

      • +1

I never had an issue with the p6 pro. Best phone Ive had.

Upgraded to the p7 Pro with the recent discounts and google credits because it made more sense than waiting to upgrade next year.

The change isn't very noticeable, still a great phone with some extra features. Haven't had any issues with this one either.

        • How much did you end up paying?

          • @fungorilla: Worked out to $753 using the 10% off, $300 credit and 10% one subscription credit.

Sold the P6 pro for $680 last night.

All the credits will be going towards a 6a or 7a if the Mrs can hold out until then. Which should cost $258 with all the vouchers and discounts applied.

            • @Herbse: The Mrs didn't want the 6Pro? That way you could keep the credits for the 8Pro :p

              • @TheContact: Hehe that would have been sweet. But the credits will expire before the p8 is out and she needs a small phone 😪

            • @Herbse: $300 credit from JB?

    • +1

Google has the capacity, resources and drive to fix any software bugs/problems/issues within a few months of release

As a previous Pixel 3a XL owner, this isn't true

I do prefer Pixel's for the software experience, but I experienced bugs that were never acknowledged (despite affecting lots of people), let alone fixed. And this is a common trend across all Google software. They love to launch stuff, but aren't so great at maintaining.

      • you'd think that but somehow Google (profanity) it up. Never seen such a buggy android phone until using a Pixel. I hope they improve.

    • LOL HAHA you're joking about Google fixing bugs right? Pixel 6 and 6 Pro got progressively worse as more and more things broke; things which are still broken. Let's hope P7 series has a better fate.

      • I like my P6P but yes there are still bugs

  • +3

The Harvey Norman / Optus hack is better, unless you really want the Pixel 7.

    • +15

      Optus hack hey

    • how do i do this? Pixel 7 pro showing standard price on HN but you get $150 gift voucher? How do I get the Optus deal?

I just wish Google Aus can do the trade-in like how they do it in the US.

    • You can trade-in with JB, gives you $300 off too.

  • Until the 31st of October you can get $300 off the Pixel 7 at JB HiFi for trading in literally any phone they accept, a Pixel 3 trades in for $20 and gets you the full $300 discount.

    • I have an iphone 8 with cracked screen and back. I already bought parts to replace them. Do you think they will accept the phone if I change screen and back cover?

      • the square up trade in program will ask question to determine the value of the phone. broken screen, broken back, etc.
I think you need a minimum $10 value of the traded phone for this to work.

Easiest to jump on and try the selections to see what is worth replacing to get the minimum trade in value.

      • As long as they offer you $10, you can get the $300 discount, can't hurt to click through the site and get a quote.

    • Tried an LG V40 last year and said it was worthless to them. Released in the same year as the Pixel 3 lol.

      • Makes sense tho. LG/Motorola phones are just not keeping value.

    Pricematch at officeworks

    • +2

sorry dumb question, but how would you price match? I mean unless you find a working code and apply it at checkout and show it to the staff?

      • Yours wasn't a dumb question, @chris666's was a dumb suggestion

      • Yep that's what I did at launch when telstra stuffed me around with my pre order

    • +2

Price match doesn't work if you use a code. Officeworks recently implemented this as a rule.

      • Worked for me at launch

        • How much did it work up to be? What perks did you get?

          • @fungorilla: Ended up 1238.90 for 256gig pro.. Perks ended up been telstra giving me over 600 in credits from them stuffing up my pre order once the tio got involved

  • Would anyone happen to know, if this google 7 now has face unlock or have they completely got rid of that feature for the pixel phones?

    • +1

Yes they have face unlock. Camera only (no lidar) but works well except in very low light

      • thanks for confirming that

    • +1

Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro has face unlock. It only unlocks the phone and you can't use face unlock to unlock an app or authenticate mobile payments.

      • +2

It's absolutely infuriating trying to use it for payments, as it doesn't even give a warning, the payment terminal just rejects the payment.

        • +1

thank you, I think I'm okay with that and still be okay to tap my card for payment

          • +1

@curiousT: I recommend just disabling face unlock, or covering the camera as you unlock it for payments.

      • That's the only reason I'm hesitant upgrading from my Pixel 4XL. It still has the best face unlock out of all Pixels, but I believe October is the last month it gets an update.
Don't like Samsung's UI, but would love a Fold4. Are there any other Android flagship alternatives left?

      • Wait, pixel 4 can face unlock apps but not pixel 7?

        • +2

Yeah the Google Pixel 4 has additional sensors so you can face unlock apps.

Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro don't have the additional sensors. To unlock apps with biometrics you have to use the under-display fingerprint sensor.

          • +2

@Twix: Looks like I'm gonna stick to my P4 for 1 more year

    • Interesting point on this on arstechnica review of the p7p. Basically the face unlock isn't rated high on the android security pyramid so if it unlocks first (vs fingerprint) you can't use it for secure stuff like payments and stuff. Then you have to stuff around getting it authenticated and stuff.

  • This isn’t going to be like the previous Pixel 6 with all the issues right?

Google seems to use a lot of unreliable and untested technologies in their betas

  • Have they fix the overheating issue?

    • +2

The only time my 7P got hot was at setup when it was downloading and installing all my apps in one go. Since then it gets warm with wireless charging but otherwise only vaguely warm with normal use.
