Thanks op, been after 1 for a while

  • Would we expect a better price during black friday or is this about as low as it gets?

    • +8

I got one for $69 (nice) on Prime Day in 2021… but the times they are a changin!

    • I'm now torn.. Was waiting to pick one up in black friday sales but is it worth the wait for only a potential saving

      • Grab it, enjoy now. It would be $15 maximum different for approx. 1.5 years of use

    • +2

$64 Prime day 2020. I've been wanting a second one for ages but the price hasn't been lower than 80 in so long. Black friday deal last year was $71.

  • +2

Nice one, OP. This will come nicely with the ebay plus switch deal

    • +1

Yeah mate, same deal and was pretty keen on anything cheaper than RRP for a Pro Controller and extra Joycons

  • +2

i got it for $69 from long time ago, but if you don't have a pro controller and you play switch on TV most of the time, then you should get one. $79 is worth it.

  • +4

Not really a bargain I got the splatoon edition for this price

    Just wait for better price

    • +5

HN refunded most people at this price though.

      • +4

Same, received refund email from HN 2 days ago.

        • Not me I price matched with jb and they gave me splatoon controller for $79 would wait for another opportunity

  • Is this even a genuine one? Reviews on Amazon says otherwise, maybe stay away from this one.

    • +2

its sold by amazon, so i'm not too worried if they sent a wrong one.

    • Get one from the dark side or JB then. Same price and will be genuine.

    • +8

What likely happened was a third-party seller listed their fake controller as this product. Someone bought it and reviewed it noting that it was fake. Amazon doesn’t differentiate which seller it is from so reviews claiming fake can be found on many popular products

  • +5

Is a genuine one worth buying over a third party one?

There looks to be other third party controllers at 1/2 the price with good reviews too

    • does the 3rd party ones do NFC /amiibos?

      • My first time buying a controller. What is NFC for? I'd play games like the Zelda or Pokemon

        • It’s for Amiibo toy figure add-on stuff. Sometimes items are gated behind tapping a Nintendo-issued toy on your controller.

Your joycons have NFC, and can be used for any of those features easily enough alongside a third party controller.

          • @DustyAfternoon: i got the pros anyway, so the convenience of not having to undock the switch/joycons just to do the amiibo is worth it for me.

the pros are sturdy enough for 2 kids under 8 … so i would definitely get another pro instead of 3rd party.

          • @DustyAfternoon: what game support amibo?
i have some few random amiboo and not all of them are usable with switch i think? i mean for example game A only can accept certain amiboo characters, not every single amiboo out there, correct?

            • @CyberMurning: not directly as a gameplay no.

off the top of my head botw, xenoblade chronicles supports amiibos, in XC3, you get to scan any amiibo 3 times a day for freebies.
and for a jrpg that is a bit heavy on the grind side, you'd appreciate the freebies.

            • +1

@CyberMurning: It varies game-by-game. For example, Breath of the Wild gives item drops when you scan an amiibo. A Zelda-specific amiibo has special loot tables, whereas generic amiibos pull from the generic one.

The only instance I know of where you’d be regularly tapping the amiibo is Skyward Sword, where a specific amiibo lets you access fast travel from anywhere.

The only good quality third-party controllers I know of is the 8Bitdo ones. They’re not that much cheaper than the official ones.
These other ones always feel a bit off and break down much sooner in my experience.

      • Do you prefer this or the 8bit (and why)?

        • If I only had a Switch I’d go Switch Pro. It’s a little more comfortable and has extra features like waking the switch and NFC.
However I also use the controller with my PC. Changing between the devices is so easy with the 8BitDo Pro 2 because of the little switch to change mode on the rear on the controller. I don’t think any other controller has this functionality.
Connecting the Switch Pro to PC is possible but gets messy and much more hassle.

    • Thanks for those links. I just bought the first one you listed there. I can’t justify the full priced Nintendo one as I don’t play it super often. I have had the Pro controller in the past and it’s great! So comfortable.

    • You can't wake a switch with a third party controller.
I bought a third party controller thinking it didn't matter to me but here i am buying a pro because i sick of having to walk to the switch to turn it on.

      • +2

Bought the CuleedTec controller and have been using it for a week or so.

Can confirm it does wake the switch (and by extension my whole TV and lounge set up) via the controller.
Guess its hit and miss depending which third party controller one gets.

        • +1

How have you found the CuleedTec compared to the original?

I noticed there are some identical looking controllers to the Culeed for a few dollars less which made me wonder if they are all selling the same product but just a different seller.

          • @Magicmagic: Surprisingly robust and comfortable. Feels good with a decent weight but had half expected it to be a featherweight piece of e-junk.

I believe its a touch smaller than Nintendo's Pro Controller, which works out better for me. I don't have an official one on hand to compare directly, but have used friends when they brought their gear over.

Only minor gripe I got with it at the moment, is the red trim slightly juts out ever so slightly from the main black body. But nothing a little wear and usage or possibly a small file can't fix.

      • Fall of Rome

      • I can confirm that my Guilikit ones wake up the switch as well.

    • I read a lot of reviews and ordered Guilikit KingKong Pro2 for the same price as the pro controller.

Those amazon ones seem to have issues with the analog controller not properly following a circle, some reviews mention.

The main thing that swayed my decision was the Guilikit's patented no-drift ever analog sticks they advertise. I have a couple of friends that have been having those drift issues.

Guilikit "Pro" supports NFC for amiibos. and non-pro does not.

      • That is tempting. How has the kingkong pro2 been for you and where did you order it from?

        • I haven't had it for long enough or compared it to the pro controller side-by-side to give it a review. So far it does what it says is all I can tell. Way more ergonomic than Joy-cons (obvs).

I'm playing Zelda BOTW at the moment (late to the party, I know)

I got it from Gamoryau on eBay

    • Is a genuine one worth buying over a third party one

Of course. Ten times better accuracy, control, lifespan, battery life, etc.

Same as it's been for decades, first-party controllers are always much much better bang for buck than 3rd party ones.

(If you want cheap controllers for multiplayer because you don't use them as much, a better option is just to use old controllers from other consoles you already own or can buy cheaply, like Wii classic, Xbox one/series or PS3/4/5, with a cheap adapter. Better quality and cheaper).

    • Cheers mate, grabbed one of these instead, $22 suits me better!

    • We have just got a switch and have 2 third party controllers like the one listed. They are actually not bad. The big difference is the battery life, which are 500 mAh batteries in the ones you listed, and runs for 6-8 hours before needing recharge.

This one is supposed to last 40 hours and I have read somewhere contains the same capacity battery as the 3ds or something similar.

This one's battery should last ages, and I have just ordered one. Hopefully won't be disappointed.

    Very good controller!

  • +1

A few people reviewed this as fake. Look at the reviews.

  • What happens if it turns out to be fake? Is it easy enough to get a refund?

    • +4

Very easy for items sold by Amazon AU (seller)

    • +2

      Why would it be fake?
If the seller is Amazon then you're fine.

If it's because of the reviews, product reviews are product reviews, not seller reviews. Anyone that bought that product from any seller can review under that product, you'll see a lot of people complaining they bought fake products for ridiculously low prices not realising it was fake.

      • +2

This is not true. Fulfilment by Amazon uses commingled inventory strategies, which means that stock from both the official vendor and that of third parties are thrown together into the same pile. Which one you get is luck of the draw. As a result, you can absolutely receive counterfeit stock from "Sold by Amazon" listings.

        • They store sellers stock, if you buy from amazon itself they do not go and pick the item they sold you from the comingled inventory from other sellers. I have been inside their warehouses here many times, its not simply a container they dump all the same product into and lucky dip it out.

          • @Willy Beamish: Sold by Amazon is always comingled. Third party sellers who use amazon fulfillment can opt to avoid the comingled strategy by going down the FNSKU route, but these products will be listed fulfilled by Amazon. The entire reason why "sold by Amazon" products tend to be cheap is because they use tactics such as comingling to drive down costs.

  • Be nice if Nintendo made these in other colours. The 64, GameCube, Wii all had some different options. Even the unloved Wii U had black and white!

    • +1

There are a handful of limited edition designs

  • Good controller, love it for BOTW.
    Prefer joycons for MK8D tho.

    Worth it.

  • Thanks ops. Bought this and cancelled the splatoon edn order from HN.
Have now received it by using Prime Same Day Shipping.

    • Splatoon one would probably be more valuable if you decided to resell in the future

  • I get why they don't have analogue triggers but c'mon. This is an $80 controller on sale? First party.. sure but the Pro 2 from 8BitDo smashes it in almsot every aspect; including price.
