Surely an m1 air is better at this point?

64 Gb in 2022??? It is not enough

    • +2

      More than enough for youtube

    • +2

For you? I've had 64gb or less since gen1.

    • What are people storing on these things?!

  • +3

The perfect iPad for people to realise that the Gen 8 and Gen 9 might be a better deal rn lol

  • +2

    Better to get gen 9

Removing the headphone jack was a terrible move in this base model, and the new pricing is a big ask for families needing to buy them for their kids for school.

    • Removing headphone jack on iphones then ipad pro models and now this..

  • Get gen 9, otherwise get an air 4 way cheaper than this

Should say wifi only in description please edit

I get the appeal of an iPad. Larger screen and all.

But only at a lower pricepoint. I think as you start getting to the $800 mark, you're better off spending more and getting a MacBook. An M1 MacBook is ~$500-600 more expensive, but it's better spent because you could actually use all that power with a proper OS.

Watching media on a 9th gen vs an 11" Pro isn't worth the ~$850 increase.

I have an M1 11" iPad Pro, and it could have an A10 and I wouldn't know. iPadOS is so neutered in terms of using all that power.

They're great for consuming media on the couch - and maybe for older folk that need a larger screen, but a proper laptop does so much more, and it does it better.

That's more of an apples and oranges comparison lol

Not sure if I agree. Honestly, depends on how 'techie' you are, but having owned an iPad for a while now thinking I'd use it a lot, the only feature that makes it worth it is how good the Apple Pencil is. If you don't need a pencil, I think cheapest macbook air is a way better buy. It really does just do SO much more.

Obviously, if you have the money, they make good content consumption devices (especially the mini). But i think the pencil support (and how good it is vs. others) is really the only unique selling point of the iPad at this stage. Everything else is just so half baked.

Do you mean comparing the iPad to a MacBook or 10th Gen iPad to iPad Pro?

I don't think so for the latter.

I forgot to mention as well, that the entry level 10th gen is only 64GB.

It's a product geared to make you go for their most expensive, highest margin devices.

        • Why wouldn’t you just compare the 10th gen with the 9th gen?

          • @BLB1984: I am by saying the 10th gen isn’t worth it for the price. I’m saying that iPad’s are worth it at the lower price point.

            • @giventofly: Agree - I've literally just ordered a 9th off Amazon for 479 as had held off waiting to check what the 10th had to offer and it just was nowhere near enough to justify the 56% price increase.

    • Just to share my experience. I use a macbook for most of my work, and ipad for reading/taking notes while I read. For me, ipad is a very useful device.

In actuality this is more like an 8% discount from the actual MSRP ($749.) The price hike is even more disappointing when you factor in it's a slightly cheaper, gimped Air 4 from 2020 (No pencil gen 2 support or laminated screen.) The selfie camera is the only improvement that I can see.

    • I think the main point of the non-laminated screen is that if it gets cracked, it's cheaper to replace since the LCD doesn't need to be tossed when/if the cover glass breaks.

This has got to be the stupidest iPad.
    Doesn’t support Apple Pencil 2.
Requires an adapter for Apple Pencil 1.

I ended up getting my daughter iPad 9 even though she waited 7 months to get 10.

    • +1

      Also no headphone jack.
I now suspect this will replace the superior air and Apple will keep gen 9 and call it 'SE'.

    • Requires an adapter for Apple Pencil 1.

      Comes with USB-C!

  • This is a terrible deal. I paid less for my iPad Air 4 which has better specs

  • Anyone know where to get a new ipad air 4 for less than a ipad 10th gen? Seems the closest is a refurbished model or 2nd hand….?

  • Wasn't the iPad 9 $400/$500 or something? At this price point there's almost no incentive to buy one of these, might as well got the next step up almost. Considering most schools force parents to try buy one of these, that's a big cost increase.
