    However it's 25% slower in multi-threaded workloads vs a Ryzen 5600u

    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-Core-i3-1215U-vs-…

12th gen also very power hungry which effects battery life. The 41wh battery isn't going to get you much mileage at all with 12th gen.

    • Is there a similar laptop with the 5600u around the same price?

    • -1

Since when the battery time is measured in Miles (mileage;)?
Anyway for length I wold stick to metric (kilo)metrage ;)

  • +14

Can get it for $589 on their eBay Store also using "SNSOCT" code for those interested.

  • +3

I had one of this laptop before and the quality of the laptop is very plasticky…

    • -2

It's not important what's outside (plastic is easier to manage & cheaper) but Intel inside ;)

  • I'm guessing TN display with 250nits. About right for this price bracket I guess.

    • -1

      as it is written
      Display 15.6" diagonal, FHD (1920 x 1080), micro-edge, anti-glare, 250 nits, 45% NTSC

      • +1

Doesn't mention IPS so I was guessing the TN part.

        • +1

you're probably right. I think IPS and VA both usually have 72% NTSC.

          • @StuBalls: its a shitty AU Optronics B156HW02

            TN

I have an Acer with a 45% NTSC IPS and its abysmal BUT.. I mean what do you expect for $589?

Man I feel like most laptops have been stuck at 8gb ram for a decade. I really feel like the technology availability isn't the issue, but making more money on already researched tech is.

I understand speed has increased among other things with RAM, but yeah, just feels like stagnation for profits.

Purposely stunting progression feels like getting much less life out of them. Let's push the envelope and stop wasting so much resources.

I feel like there's probably a lot of complex context I'm missing so take my rant with a grain of salt.

    • +2

      The current situation is fine
OEM's put a huge premium on 16GB models because most people are not tinkerers
This leaves space for the cheaper 8GB models that can be upgraded so the savvy can upgrade cheaply

Some laptop OEM's (ASUS) are trying to do Apple style tiering with nice looking but non-upgradable models

However, based on the flood of Vivobook stock everywhere that cannot be cleared, ASUS have underestimated the intelligence of PC laptop buyers

      • put it this way

Laptops were stuck at 1,366 x 768 because the panel makers had processes that would crank out these panels cheap… so laptop makers put them in because they just cared about shipping cheapest boxes… and they didnt change until consumers just said no due to "FHD" being a thing.

they put in a single stick module and the cheapest 256gb ssd just get lowest BOM… because the market is very cost sensitive

        • Given the average person on the street thinks RAM is an animal, nothing will change until MS specifies minimum 16GB RAM for Windows 12/13/14 etc

    • Yea i feel same 12 GB should be a norm. 8 GB is often not enough. Not for me at least. Always find myself struggling everynow and then with memory intensive applications.

This additional 4 GB ram is not even that costly to add, should be less than like $25 for manufacturer to put an extra 4GB.

And that should be the baseline. then make their premiums with 32 GB or 20 GB or more

    • 8GB is probably plenty for 90% of the population who only consume content and social media. Plenty for office productivity too.

What is disturbing is the 4GB Ram laptops still being produced in 2022. I understand manufacturers are trying to offer bottom-of-the-barrel specs for people who don't know better and want to pay as little as possible, but these rubbish machines reflect very poorly on the manufacturers when the users are frustrated by the poor performance.

S mode bhold my power spew

    • +3

Just a few clicks and you're in normal mode.

I think for the target market, it's a great way to provide basic protection, not only from online threats but themselves. I would have more of an issue if you couldn't opt out of it.

For an above average to power user, different story.

      • I've been in a position where I could not take it it out, as the service was unavailable. Took it back to store for replacement.

        • I agree with the 'power spew'

i think its a combo of cheap licenses from Microsoft AND then microsoft wanting to tie your o/s to a MS Account… but it comes down to MS being assholes

          • @tonyjzx: Never thought of it as a licence upsell before but makes sense

  • +1

    Thanks OP
seems like a good laptop for my kid. He is going to year 7 next year, and this seems nice and cheap!

    • +1

His back might appreciate a lighter laptop.

      • Weight 1.78 kg
All good, school list states less then 2kg :-)

  • I'm in the market for a high school laptop (just like unfunkable in another comment) that's light and has Macbook Air-level battery life … how good a deal is this? Should I wait for better deals?

    • See below. This is not ideal for school. Too big, heavy and fragile. Better as a desktop replacement.

  • Instead of this plastic-junk case, you could get an ex-lease business-grade laptop with 12 month warranty, better display, 16GB, Win 11 Pro, lighter, better battery, …
Some trade-offs of course, but well worth considering at this budget level. Especially if you intend to carry it around frequently.

    • +1

yeah but you're getting a 3-4yr old decayed battery… and you're doing lucky dip as far as wear is going

horses for courses i'm on a $225 dell 7480 whatever but and at under $300 you roll the dice

      but for $589? get new.

      • -2

I've bought from places like ACT and Fusetech, and when they say A-grade, they mean it. They even offer 30-day return if you don't like it.
The 3-4yo battery still lasts longer than the above PC, with 41Wh and a 15" screen. But replacements are cheap.
(Just don't buy a used surface! everything is glued or soldered.)

A Latitude / Thinkpad / EliteBook is a thing of beauty, with magnesium and aluminium cases. The consumer-grade plastic, not so much.
Of course, if the laptop spends most of its life in the same home or office, then case quality and battery life don't matter much. And the business models are not great for gaming.

      • +1

        I'm a huge fan of the i3 1215u.

I'm still going to suggest dell 7490. Better serviceability, dirt cheap replacement and upgrade parts, and proven build and longevity. The battery decay is small nowadays, battery tech came a long way.

The i3 is an amazingly affordable 6 thread chip, and can soon be found in 400 bucks hand held gaming consoles. But i don't trust laptop makers to pair this chip with decent parts.

        • +1

as people here love to point out its 6 normal performance cores and 4 efficient cores

so its a dual core w/ some help

          • @tonyjzx: Eh, 12th gen cpus are so good that it doesn't matter. And the gpu performance, while will have the usual Intel driver issue, will be perform close to mid range graphics. In real world, it won't be a bottle neck unless your use case needs a laptop that probably should cost 3 times the amount.

  • Man this hp is awesome value!! And I've only just bought one

  • I3 12th gen is hexacore? Does that mean it's better than i5 11th gen?

    • It's 2 big + 4 little cores, totalling 8 threads. As for whether it's better than 11th gen i5 or not, maybe? There's not really many people out there interested in measuring real world usage anymore. It handles emulation better.

  • Was thinking of getting this for my kids Xmas she is only 10yrs old, already has iPad from few years ago was mentioned she like a laptop, this one will probably be better than dads one.

I did want to spend less and I’m wondering if better deals to come on Black Friday.

Last yrs Black Friday deals on laptops was there similar specs but better deals as I’m not sure when this ends

  • This is a solid machine for the price,. You can't go wrong with this one!

  • Anyone know how long they keep a click and collect order as currently away for 2 weeks, yes could have it delivered but trying to save that extra $8.00

  • What other retailers sell this to compare prices how much does it normally cost

  • Hackintosh-able?

  • Anyone confirm that it can take another 8GB? May have to wait for someone to open it up.
