This betters the 3DS deal offered by Kmart, which was $169. Difference is you can order from Big W now and you get free shipping, seems like a very good price for anybody without a 3DS.

Considering it's not out till the end of August and likely to be around the $220-$250 mark, this is still a very good deal.

Nah, I've never liked the size of the XL (DSi and now 3DS). Makes it less portable.

    • Yeah, way to make every game look like Pong.

  • +1

XL has a nice big screen but since it does not improve the resolution the graphics will naturally look more pixelated. Also no circle pad pro for XL means third person and first person games such as Snake Eater and Resident Evil will be more difficult to control. I sold my 3DS in the hopes of a bigger screen with dual analog.

    • nintendo is going downhill :(
wii u is a terrible "joyblet" as well

anyway. good find. but im looking forward for dsi to hit rock bottom.

      • +3

        Oh you've used a WiiU?

    • Have you seen gameplay footage on Youtube and stuff though? I think it looks fine blown up. The pixels are really dense on the 3DS.
I wouldn't fuss about the Circle Pad Pro support, now that this new one doesn't support it, I doubt games will still be made to work with it. (Much like the rumble pack for the original DS which used the GBA slot.)

No they aren't. Their density is actually quite poor compared to other modern handhelds. All of Nintendo's handhelds have low pixel density. XL only makes it worse.

I wouldn't fuss about the Circle Pad Pro support, now that this new one doesn't support it, I doubt games will still be made to work with it. (Much like the rumble pack for the original DS which used the GBA slot.)

That's a real shame, because the games would have been improved if they were made to work with it. It sounds like they are sticking to their decision though. Many urged Sony to add a second stick to the PSP but they never added it either up till the point it died. So Nintendo will probably not yield.

I would say if you were holding out on buying 3DS in case they release a revision later with a second stick, it's probably safe to just buy it now and assume it won't happen.

I just wish there were more appealing colours. I don't like red or blue or green. I'd like an all white unit.

      • Agreed about this reducing Pro support going foward. I guess they could make another attachment (making the XL the size of a truck), but I think developers will be turned off by fragmentation

Disagree about pixel density, personally I'd like it to be higher now. If it's anything like the Dsi > Dsi XL I think games could look pretty grainy

tldr this a pretty good deal right now.

Increasing the size of the screen reduces the ppi. It's already not that great. Compared to Vita and smartphones where it's hard to see individual pixels, the 3DS is blown out of the water. You can see the LCD grid very easily on a 3DS. On a phone you'd need a magnifying glass or look very closely. XL will look doubly worse.

Hopefully the battery will be bigger also.

          EDIT: pixel densities.

          3DS = 132 ppi
          3DS XL = 95 ppi
          DS Lite = 102 ppi
          DSi = 98 ppi
          DSi XL = 75 ppi

I already feel that isn't great for a handheld, but if you compare it to others:

          iPod Nano = 220
          iPod Classic = 163
          iPhone 4 = 326
          iPad 3 = 264
          PSP = 128
          PSP Go = 145
          PS Vita = 221
          Galaxy S3 = 306

You might think comparing it to phones is unfair. You can at least compare it to PSPs and Vita where it still comes out second best to the original PSP.

They do the job, but don't call them high pixel density screens. They aren't. If you're used to modern handhelds, it's difficult going back to Nintendo screens.

        • Yep, I could even see the subpixels on the DSi XL. It made everything blocky and contributed to a loss of detail.

        • "Disagree about pixel density, personally I'd like it to be higher"

He says he wants the pixel density to increase, meaning ppi should either be improved or remain stable with the larger screen jump to the 3DS XL. Unfortunately, that's basically impossible without changing (and fragmenting) the 3DS screen resolution.

OP=>seems like a very good price for anybody without a 3DS.

so does everyone need to have a 3DS ?

  • +2

will be 198 at launch most likely
i had one of these and sold it underwhelming to say the least

  • +3

If you are looking to buy a 3DS I would personally recommend you wait for the XL to be released. The new releases of the current 3DS compared to the first ones last year show very noticeable quality difference between the first releases' LCD Screen to the current. Thats why they are able to drop the prices of the 3DS because they sacrifice LCD quality.

When I first saw the 3ds price drops I was pretty mad that i payed like $250 + but then i read an article the other day and I felt alot better.

For all who are interested, facts about 3DS XL:
    - RRP $249.95
    - Launches in July in Europe
    - Screen size is approximately 90% bigger (in terms of area)
    - Does not come with an AC Adapter and dock (unlike the normal 3DS)

    • Without an AC adapter how do you recharge it?

      • +2

AFAIK, there will be chargers sold separately. And I thought the no-charger-included was only in Japan?

      • -7

Same charger as a dsi. No big deal. Most people have DSi.

        • +5

How do you know most people have a DSi?

        • +2

          I don't have a DSi.

        • +6

If anything, everyone has a ds lite.

  • -1

I'd boycott these, anyone else think these "constant" releases are very similar to…?

  • USB charger cables are $1 on Ebay. Wall chargers a little over $2. They'd be coming from HK/China so will take 3 or 4 weeks.

I find it hard to believe they would ship with no way of charging the battery, so maybe there is a USB cable included instead of an AC adapter.

  • The original DS was great in terms of innovative gaming. But with the advent of tablets and touch phones, Nintendo needs to do better than this.

    • touch is the key word there I like my butttons.

  • Hmm I might hunt on ebay for a cheap 2nd hand DS Lite.. :) prefer older gameboy compatible ones.

  • -5

Um OP it's not free shipping?

    • -2

Yeah that's why I didn't grab this one. An extra $1 at Kmart to save $8 on shipping sounds perfectly reasonable.

    • +5

Um it is, but you need to get to the final stage of the checkout process, before it gets applied.

  • Great price, just bought one for my sons bday!

  • not the 3D but Target are also pricecutting the DSi and DSi XL http://www.target.com/c/nintendo-ds-video-games-electronics/…
