    Is it anti-static?

  • No. It's carbon steel. It will rust instead.

It's doing nothing to keep the vampires away. And the bulbs are a bitch to get out and it's spreading through my lawn like crazy.

try metsulfuron methyl, or Iodosulfuron .

    • Purchased for this reason

  • Hm looking for a core aerator. This could do the job but not very efficiently with one plug. Anyone got any recommendations? The ones available at Bunnings are poorly reviewed.

    • +7

Hire one for Kennards. Split it with a mate or two and get all 2-3 lawns done in a day.

    • I actually just found a guy from marketplace to come out and do my place. It was cheaper than hiring the machine it's self. Have a look at market place.

      • How often do we need aerate? Are there any benefits Vs just the regular fertilizing / seasol?

        • Depends on your usage. I'm general, once every 2 years

        • I used to do mine every year at the beginning of spring. Put down a good quality fertilzer and watch it grow. Mow without a catcher and let the grass clipping break down into nitrogen for health of the lawn. After 2/3 years of doing that, you'll have the healthiest lawn all year round and then only have to do it once every 2years. Gotta get to that level first though

          • @teddiebear: I am consideres a lawn-nazi lmao nobody can walk or park a car on my lawn lol

          • @teddiebear: Whats a good quality fertilizer u think? For buffalo

            • @bestbarginever: For buffalo i've always used 'Amgrow supergreen lawn fertiliser'. Has 28% nitrogen so you should wear gloves when handling it (can burn skin at that level). Core/plug your lawn which promotes root growth. Sprinkle this on in late arvo and then drown your lawn disolving all granules. Very potent smell so be warned. You must hose it in or it will burn your lawn. You can literally sit and watch your lawn grow. You'll have to mow it every 2days it grows that much & fast. The colour is a rich dark emerald green which has to be seen to believe…. BEAUTIFUL

        • Ive got a sloping lawn and wasted so much water trying to get the soil moist below the top couple of mm.
Cored the lawn and top dressed with sand.
Every drop of water i put on the lawn last year got down to the roots. Lawn never looked better and saved 75% of the water I'd normally use

          • @feisty: Coring/plugging your lawn does amazing things…. it promotes so much under-soil healthy growth of the roots. Sand hold water very well but for a small amount of time in summer. A week a year concentrating on plugging, fertilising, mowing (without a catcher pref) and NEVER cutting more than 1/3 of the height of the grass at once. You know that reeeeally nice smell of freshly cut lawn?? It's actually a bad thing lol. Means too much has been cut off at once and is a tell of your lawn dieing (seriously lol)

            • +1

@teddiebear: Some good advice. I cringe when people mow 80% of the leaf length. There are not a lot of lawn proud people in my suburb. They spend their entire time mowing fast growing weeds not understanding that if they killed off the weeds they'd be mowing way less and have a better looking lawn in the process

              • @feisty: Absolutely! It takes 1 weekend to prep your lawn for a good solid season. Weeding is a sign of a couple of issues. White clover (most common) is a sign of low nitrogen levels in the soil and if in abundance, can prevent your lawn from growing. The grass is still alive under the 1cm of clover, it simply doesn't get sun to grown due to being covered. Spray the clover (MUST be on a windless day, otherwise you'll kill other plants like tomato plants (hyper sensitive to sprays)) kill the clover and a week later tou'll see you grass grow again

              • @feisty: I don't see the point in cutting ultra-low. Seeing people rush annoys me sometimes. I know there are much better things to be doing lol but an extra 30mins won't hurt.
Cutting too short causes problems too such as the soil drying out and cracking.
RULE OF THUMB: short winter = short grass (but not too short). Looooong summer = long grass… prevents soil drying out, lawn dieing and being burnt off (keeps soil moist to keep lawn hydrated)
I keep mine the same length all year round and people ask me why does my lawn look so lush and green and others brown and shite lol

Need something with a side eject. I got this, works decent but is more expensive

      • +1

        This is great advice.
Not only the side eject, but 4 prongs.
Any decent sized lawn, and you’ll be knackered using just a single prong one like this deal.

      • Thanks for the recommendation. Looks solid but yeah definitely not cheap!

        • May not be cheap but is a serious bit of kit. Corers/pluggers at bunning don't have the side-eject chutes. Without that chute, the hole simply compacts and clogs up the holes in the device, which you have to manually get a screwdriver and shove down it to clean it out every couple of holes….. PITA!! The model shown in that link is one of the best i've used and can't recommend it enough… it's a GREAT tool. Great link bboT

  • Not for Buffalo grass

    • Why?

You might lose a bit of grass, sure.. but it'll grow back?

      • +2

I'm thinking that's referring to cutting plugs to transplant - you wouldn't get a big enough piece to have a decent bit of stem and root. Pity, I could use such a tool - quicker than cutting out squares with a spade.

        • Ok. I'd probably put seeds in the plug hole and dirt on top. But i don't know anything of lawn care
