    Cheap!

  • Same as Amazon sale price ? Can't remember

  • +3

I was surprised that Good guys not selling Kobo anymore :(

  • tempted to upgrade my kobo touch made in 2011, this one 0.8" bigger but not sure if worth as i dont really read a lot at home, maybe when travelling.
kobo has micro sd so storage is not an issue. dont think i need wireless charging as this last months with single charge anyway

  • +2

Kindles got rid of free data 3g?

    • 3G got rid of itself, they took the bands to give them to 4G.

I assume Amazon chose not to update to 4G to phase out ongoing data costs without having to announce it.

  • Checking out by phone. I couldn't find any where to enter the code. Pls help!

  • +2

    Signature worth the extra $$$$?

    • +6

Not really. 32gb is super overkill for storing books.
Wireless charging needs compatible charger and it doesnt really matter when the battery can last a whole month.
I would go with the cheaper model

      • Cheers

      • Books average just 1 MB, unless they contain artworks/photos or fancy design like RPG manuals often do. In these days of bloatware programs occupying hundreds of MB, it is still great to have 1 MB ebooks.

    • +1

IMO yes though depends on your use case.

I have one - for the auto adj backlight if nothing else but 8GB is also too cramped for my liking.

      https://screenrant.com/amazon-kindle-paperwhite-vs-signature…

      • for mangas, 32GB would be good

        • +1

Might as well use a regular tablet as Kindle is terrible with images and pdf

    • Only if you plan to download audiobooks and mangas.

  • Do you think theres a point holding out till black friday/tech monday or is this the lowest price we are likely to get?

    • Doubt it will get any lower

    • Probably that might be the lowest unless Amazon prices it at $149 over the black friday sales. Nevertheless, it's a steal at this price.
Last year I bought it during Black friday @ $169.

    • maybe other ereaders might go on sale then

Can you read library books (OverDrive/Libby) on this device?

    • +1

No unfortunately. Found this out after I purchased mine.

    • +3

No, I ended up giving my paper white to my mum and getting a kobo. Being able to browse and borrow via overdrive is so convenient.

      • With a Kobo do you just login directly to overdrive and Libby does that work? And do you select your library and it works?? Just curious how the interface works? Presuming it works not just for Australian libraries but anywhere in the world with libraries?

        • Following

        • +2

Yes you can use any library account that you have, the librarian I talked to at my local signed up to interstate libraries as they had different catalogues. I haven’t heard any overseas so unsure on that account. You log in directly on the device however I usually use my library app on my phone to browse and borrow. Then my kobo will sync and download the books when they are available.

          • @em: So you download to your android phones library Kobo app? Which like kindle syncs to the Kobo E-reader itself much like kindle purchases via the Amazon website?

    • +2

No need if you're prepared to go to the darkside.

Yo ho yo ho a pirate's life fer meeee!

        • +1

ahhrrrrrr does one need to convert said pdf's to be able to be read on this device?

          • +1

@pete8oes: You just email it to the Kindle. Super easy.

      • Get the "Send to Kindle" add on for Mac or PC. Kindle supports ePub now finally, which makes sailing a bit easier.

    • The answer is not quite No, but it's close.
You can open a free library account at certain US libraries then send ebook hires across that way. I used LA public library.

Fair warning its a bit of a pain and account recently stopped working so it's not perfect.

  • How long does the battery last?

    • +4

Mine is 4-5 weeks, with reading 45mins per day.

    • Months if you don't use it. The sleep mode is a deep sleep.

Please try again in 30 seconds.

    LOL

    • Longest 30 seconds ever.

  • Last one died exactly in 24 months like clockwork after normal and occasional use. Is this normal for everyone or just my bad luck ? When I searched online many others had same issue.

How long has your device lasted ?

    • +3

We are still using a kindle purchased in 2012 or so, back when Woolies were flogging them off for $49.

      It was a 4th generation (non-touch) version.

      • +1

Word of warning. I recently replaced my Kindle 3G (it died) with a new version. Touchscreens suck compared to physical buttons. Whoever decided to remove the buttons should be lined up against the wall.

        • I’ve got both and I don’t find a problem with touchscreen

          • +1

@rumchaser: Touchscreen is nowhere near as responsive as physical buttons for page turns and don't get me started on needing to memorise specific sections of the screen to touch to bring up certain menus or functions.

For e-readers, touchscreens are a plague and should be killed.

            • @choodi: I actually find I randomly change pages more often on my kindle keyboard then I ever have on my Clara or paperwhite .
It’s pretty simple to remember the left and right side of the screen to turn the pages .

      • Got the woolies too. With the small buttons bottom middle? It was 80 ish wasn't it?

I've been tossing up as I hardly used it but really want to…. Albeit it has no backlight. Whether to upgrade to a Paperwhite or normal kindle.. I believe both have backlights?

Thought it'd be handy with a backlight for low light reading as we now have a little one. So having light all the time at full brightness can be an issue at night /sleeping times.

I do worry if not having a physical page button turner is annoying though. Wonder if anyone who's had both can comment if it's a legitimate bug bear over time (do you get false turns from holding the Kindle on the sides /screen?) Or just a small first world problem?

        • Definitely small world problem, but does still nag me. I've gotten used to touch screen, and it's OK most of the time, it's just that I don't like the narrow margin to turn a page back.

Overall though I'd say the benefits far outweigh the negatives, I love the screen, the backlight, the warm light. I'd go for it if I were you.

          • @AncientWisdom: Is it a simple touch triggers it that you can't rest your finger over the side of the screen while holding? Or required abit more of a gesture?

I see the normal kindle also comes backlit. Do you know if it's the same backlit strength as your Paperwhite? Waterproofing aside any reason to get a Paperwhite over the Kindle normal? PPI difference quite notable when reading?

    • +3

I replaced my old Kindle last year after about 10 years' use but that was only because I felt like an upgrade.

      • How do you find the lack of buttons for page turning ? And the backlit screen on a Kindle or Paperwhite ? Have a 4th gen I've not used enough to feel well worn for money but the backlight seems tempting.

        • I've gotten used to it well enough that I don't think about the lack of buttons at all

    • Just replacing my Kindle Keyboard (3rd generation). Bought when it first came out.

    • Bought this one to replace a Kindle 5 that I got in 2012. That one is still going strong but wanted something with a backlight.

      • Kindle 4 here. Minimal use so guilt tripped but also keen for a backlight. Is it worth the jump? Did you get a kindle with backlight or the Paperwhite ? Loss of manual page turning buttons an issue?

        • It is extremely worthwhile - I got the paperwhite and the backlight is great and amazingly even, and the screen is noticebly better in both size and sharpness. Was originally concerned by lack of physical buttons but you get used to it immediately and don't really miss them.

    • Mine was bought in 2017 and is still going strong until now ( 10th gen paperwhite).

May you have to turn off the timer in your Kindle with the hidden button somewhere then?

  • Internal server error

  • Hopefully, the kindle paperwhite 10th generation fits in the same box as the 11th gen. I'm hoping to swap my 10th gen into the 11th gen box and give it to my wife as a Xmas present while giving myself a nice upgrade.

Can I price match with officeworks?

    • Try it out!

    • Nope, no codes

  • -1

Ordered the signature one. Can this be tax deductible as work-related expense?

    • Does it directly aid you in generating an income?

      • I am a software engineer, I will use it to read work-related books. Does it look like a good reason?

        • -1

Don't think so, Raj. Maybe if you claimed a % of the total price it would look more legit.

It'd be like claiming your TV at home because you say you watch work related YouTube clips on it.

        • +1

You can claim the books you've bought though and potentially the percentage of time you've use to read those books.

          • @ooooooooyeahhhhh: Time to read the books? How would you justify or calculate that? How much is your time worth outside of your usual paid hours? lol

          • @ooooooooyeahhhhh: Thanks! I get reimbursed for the books, I might add a portion of the cost of device to tax next year

            • +1

@raj01091983: Sorry Raj. It's not a work related cost and your personal use of the device would be argued as taking up most of the % of time. A hard one to argue

  • Can Kindle be used to borrow electronic books from local community libraries in Melbourne?

    • No, only Kobo can integrate with Overdrive and Libby to enable borrowing e-books from local libraries.

  • Any idea how long this deal will last?

  • Any kobo clare deal?

  • Killer price, love my Kindle (same model).

I haven't readed a full book in over 6 years but you'll never be able to extrapolate that based on how my goodly my spellings is. Last book I red was Diary of a Wimpy Kid dog days. I have boughted one now. Let's see if this gets me reading some bookes.

    • Goodly luck to you!

Great deal. Don't forget to stack with CashRewards.

Placed an order about an hour ago and the site said stock was expected soon and gave an expected delivery date of 28 November. However I just received an SMS saying it's ready for dispatch so there still appears to be stock.

  • +1

@sessionzero thanks, you saved me an extra $18

  • If anyone bought on impulse and no longer wants it, let me know! deal expired as I was about to pull the trigger

    • Same! If after notbad, someone else bought on impulse and isn't keen to keep it…

I slept on it then today the deal was gone :(

      • You’ll probably use it more than I would. I am tempted to handover in Sydney area for cash

  • Received mine (only opened yesterday after being overseas) . The box was already opened and had a piece of sticky tape holding the flap down. One of the bar codes on the bottom was also crossed out with red texta. Trying to work out if i've recevied a returned unit or something.

Have sent a message to GG but has anyone else received in this condition?
