WiFi 7 coming next year is probably worth waiting for

  • So many different high end routers. How do you guys decide which one to go for? Mine is currently dying and I need to decide on a replacement.

Buy what you can afford and is rated well on Dong Knows… has never failed me.

Also do you need Mesh? Is your place large? Double storey? Weird configuration with walls? Hardwired?

I have never had any issues with Asus routers… stay away from modem routers always had issues with longevity with them.

Had a 68u to ac86u and looking to get this one. Great thing with this… it’s AiMesh so my old routers gets recycled.

      • My current one is a ASUS ROG Rapture GT-5300 so it's not a cheap ISP one. It keeps dropping all the time so I'm looking to get a replacement.

        • Do you know it's the Router at fault?

          • @scuderiarmani: Pretty sure. NBN tech has been out and they say there is nothing wrong with the line. The NBN box doesn't seem to have any issues. When I reset the router everything is fine. Sometimes it goes well for a few hours, a day maybe. Sometimes get several drop outs in an hour.

@ozbs25: I'd try getting a $20-40 Telstra Gen 2 off FB and just use it for a week or so and see how it goes.

Useful as a reliable backup anyway.

Just piece of mind to rule out.

I've had issues with Asus Routers too Fwiw anyway.

              • @scuderiarmani: My ISP is already sending me a replacement. I'm just waiting for it to arrive. I may give it a test run. My ASUS router is still under warranty. I will see what they want to do with it. I haven't taken it in as I don't want to be without a router in case they have to take it away for testing/repairs.

      • upvoting for the slotting into the ecosystem.
upgrading doesn't mean throwing the old one out.. just expanding your network

NOTE: This rapture its only dual band so you will want to physical backbone or lose one of your bands. With getting multiple AP's you need to consider what backbone you will use, as that determines how your AP's connect to your Router.

        • Damn right… you do lose the 5GHz band.

I have my bands on separate SSID and all the kids devices are on the 2.4GHz bands. We float to whatever band is available.

All bandwidth intensive devices are hardwired.

        • I've had a look at a few of the top end ASUS ones. I have liked mine until it started having issues. Hopefully can get a replacement or a refund in time for Black Friday sales. I actually want to try to keep more than 4 ports on the router. We have Cat5e running throughout the house and would prefer to not have to run another switch off the UPS. The newer version of mine has gone down to 4 ports so was starting to look at some of the other options.

        • +1

You don't lose the band, it shares it. Obviously impacting it.

Have used wireless mesh devices before with dual band, no band disappears.

    • I google, based on my needs.

      My needs;
      1. WiFi performance both in and out(backyard, front yard) of my single story house.
      - As stated by ValouSydney dong has done testing on the range of this device and it is a high performer.
      - At peak my house runs about 9 wireless devices (6 smart [phones or tablets] and 3 laptops/pcs)
      2. Replace the Telstra rubbish I currently use. It is starting to flake out after 2 years of good service.
      - anything can replace a wifi router
      3. Value
      - At the current price its not much more than your average router and provides good coverage and some excessive features.
      - the undiscounted price is redonkulous, which kept me away from this router.
      - the discounted price brings it into my budget.

Future wise I can use this router as a wifi access point if I need to upgrade to a wifi 7 router.

Very happy with this router, it's only wifi 6 but anyway most devices don't support wifi 6e, so wifi 7 is out of the picture.
    The Range is huge too.

If you don't have more than ~20 devices or your house is in 1 level, you probably don't need Mesh and this is just great. It covers my 600sqm land with full signal.
I also max out to 1Gbps through wifi on my desktop / phone.

According to dongknows it's just the best dual band wifi 6: https://dongknows.com/asus-rog-rapture-gt-ax6000-gaming-rout…

thanks for the feedback on your experience.

ordered the router and feel more confident hearing real user experiences.

      • +2

it's also compatible with Merlin by the way https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/download
This is an unofficial firmware that provides better experience / less bugs / customisation compare to the native asus firmware.

        • Ahh yes I will bookmark that.

I heard mention in some of the video reviews of this, so I'll see about that firmware.

          • +1

@nodie: You can install plenty of scripts if you feel like it, or even Plex Server.

        • Can Merlin bring AiMesh to an existing Asus RT-AC87U?

I was thinking of upgrading and wondering if my old router could still be useful but the 87 doesn't have it as a feature in the default firmware.

    • That's kind of our situation. 1 level not a whole lot of devices. Just wish this one had more ports.

    • I forgot to mention at this price I only recommend it for people who have gigabit internet or wants reliable hardware.

  • Jb Hoppers Crossing price match best that they will do was $489 as is their wholesale price and won't go lower.

    • +1

I rang them and they matched the price $449
And now you can get it for $449 at Amazon as well.
      https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09RSXNGTB

      • Attempted another JB store they had stock but could not find it for price match thanks for the Amazon link ordered on also got next day delivery.

  • It says it's NOT NBN ready….. what's the go with that? Threw me off there for a minute and can't work out why such a premium router wouldn't have it.

    • +1

      Definitely works with NBN

      • Why would it say "not nbn ready" ? Kinda strange….

        • +1

Depends on your type of NBN. Some types of NBN you'll still need a modem/router. If you have FTTN you'll need a VDSL2-compatible modem-router. We have HFC so we only need a router (like this one) to connect to the NBN modem which was supplied.

source: Modem vs Router: What’s the difference for NBN?

  • +1

Available at Amazon AU for the same price.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/ASUS-GT-AX6000-Aggregation-Triple-…

  • Great price, i paid over $600 on the 30th Sep and that was the cheapest i could find it so this is a big drop.

  • This or the TP-Link Archer AX11000 which is only slightly more expensive and gets 3 bands?

Thinking of upgrading from an RT-AC87U and it apparently doesn't support AI mesh.

    • Depends on your use case. Do you have devices or will be buying devices that can take advantage of the extra speed?

For me range is the main point for me with routers. Speed is secondary. All my high bandwidth and low latency devices are hardwired. For everything else don’t really care too much about it.

      • Thanks for your advice,
Well range is important for me, but I recently got a gigabit NBN connection and would prefer to have something that can make use of it since I can't use a wired connection easily.
Also being able to reduce the NAT easily for my Nintendo switch, which always keeps having problems.

Asus seems to have a once click port forwarding solution but maybe the TP-Link has more range, given it's double the antennas? I read somewhere it may not be as fast since it has 2x 5GHz bands?
But then again… Asus may be future proof, and could be turned into a mesh system down the line…idk

  • Bought two and run 2.5gb ethernet backbone wired AiMesh between two floors of my house. Works a treat.
