Fanatec Podium Racing Wheel F1 $1999.95 (save $799.95) (and Bundle with Clubsport V3 Pedals $2299.95 (save $249.90))

Yes, pretty niche deal and a bit egregious to still charge further for delivery (about $32 for myself, as an example).

Can't find much of a history of these going on sale as well.

nice, a steering wheel costs more than my car

        • Comment of the day! Thank you 😊

      • GermanKangaroo, great name, sounds more expensive than his car!

In this economy, your car is likely worth more.

Crazy times, covid looked like wrecking house prices at first, then.. boom!

Cars make more sense since someone needs to make all the bits. Same for new houses I guess.

      • I dunno, my 2005 car with hail and body damage paired with 220k on the clock is valued at about that.

        • 220k isn't bad, what car is it?

          • +1

@Zackeroo: Mazda 3. It's mechanically sound but people tend to want newer/prettier cars so it drives the price down. Works for me though :)

            • @AlanHB: Hmm I feel there's quite a huge market for reliable cars such as the Mazda 3. At 220K that should be valued a little more than $2K

              • @Zackeroo: If you're willing to pay more for a nearly 20 year old car with comestic damage, go for it. There have been similar condition/age cars going in the $2k range where I live though.

                • @AlanHB: I'm not willing to spend that much on a car at that condition. I'm simply saying I've seen car listings similar to yours for $3-4K. We live in a world of inflated prices.

The difference could be due to the locations we live in though that's a good point

                  • @Zackeroo: Yeah for sure, also we don't really know what prices the cars actually sold at so who knows. Either way it's good to know you can still grab a beater for under $5k.

                    • +2

@AlanHB: Yea that's always something to find out when you're checking out used cars. You definitely can get a decent car under $5K. I picked up a 2006 Volvo S60 with 189K in perfect condition for $3800. It was one of the highest models too, and has really nice OEM chrome wheels on it. Rides smoother than anything I've ever been in before, so I guess the car market isn't completely terrible? (unless there's something very wrong with this car I haven't found out about yet)

                      • +1

@Zackeroo: Wow nice score dude! Yeah I think that the car prices have basically hit the nicer/newer cars more than the older ones. If you are a buyer like yourself who is happy to get a car that runs irrespective of flex privileges there's still bargains around.

                        • @AlanHB: Yea that's for sure. A lot of the more "wanted" brands have shot up in price.

You know… Funny enough, this S60 looks and rides like an absolute dream. I definitely have flex privileges over all those Corollas on the road HAHA. 2.4L 5 cylinder sounds awesome too :)

Fanatec absolutely very rarely go on sale. So you can't really compare it to anything.

The site actually got nuked earlier today because everyone trying to jump on. wouldn't be surprise if SOLD OUT soon or maybe they'll go down the backorder path.

What black magic is happening to get wireless power???

    • +1

Yeah I want to know about this too. They just mention it like it's no big deal.

    • +3

      Batteries? 😏

    • +4

there's pins inside the steering column, basically.

lots of these kinds of high end sim racing wheels have a coiled USB cable, some are truly wireless with batteries, the fanatec stuff just has it built into the quick release connector between the base unit and the wheel itself

it's not really wireless, fanatec are full of sh*t

  • +22

plus vote, just for using the word egregious

  • +2

I would like to dabble in this, loaded Assetto Corsa and the free on Amazon this month WRC 9 and running them with a controller, which sucks.

What’s a half decent wheel for < $300 or so?

    • +12

      Logitech G29

      • +1

Yes, no other choice for dabblers - you want something easy to use and reliable. Loads of G29 and G920 for $200-$250 on the used market at the moment.

        • Oh, there is a new cheap wheel from memory but cant remember what.

Used G29 is the cheapest way (If you play on console get the right model (G923 etc), thats all)

        • I remember when they were under $250 new before Covid… then game over video game deals

    • Where did you find a free game on Amazon? And I agree with the other guys, plenty of G27 G29 G920 etc wheels on market place in your price range.

    • +2

Thrustmaster T300 RS if you can score it on special and/or second hand. IMO much better entry wheel than any logitech as it's belt driven not gear driven

      • This.

300RS is way better than G29.

    • Plenty of Logitech G29/G920 and some Thrustmaster TMX/T150 on FB marketplace (in comparison ebay is very quiet), i can't speak for the logitech wheels but my T150 has been good enough for me. Make sure if you're on console to get the right version, otherwise just get either as they're all PC compatible

    • +2

Logitech G29 will absolutely do the job. People say the thrustmaster for the belt, but then the pedals are shit in comparison and they neglect to mention they tend to swap them out. It's like 20% the cost of this ($400) but does go on sale

          • +6

@HD9990: Well, it was less than a day ago. This is a bargain website so $2k on a direct drive wheelbase and steering wheel is better and safer than a $1k fine and losing licence.

              @Caped Baldy: What a deal

Time to ramp out a new legislated OzBargain collaborative sim-racing program 🏎️

If anyone is serious about getting into sim racing just go with Simucube. Avoid the Fanatec ecosystem. Don't take my word for it just do a bit of research on Fanatec quality control and customer support.

Don't take my word for it just do a bit of research on Fanatec quality control and customer support

One of those YMMV things, I guess.

In 2010 I built a rig (with head tracking) for my PS3 and used one of their more mass-market GT3-RS wheels with Clubsport pedals. Loved every minute of playtime with it. It landed with a new owner about six years ago who discovered that the orange plastic housing/cowl over the motor housing had started to become brittle. He reached out to their support area about buying a replacement (given he wasn't the original owner and it was for a unit already six years old). They responded by saying that the plastic shouldn't have done that and they shipped him a new one by DHL Express straight from Germany. I was impressed.

    • +3

+1 on the fanatec quality/customer service.

i know people who have had no problems and great service
i also know people who had to threaten legal action to get $2500 back after returning a wheel, it was signed for as accepted by fanatec but they refused to acknowledge that they had it until the legal action was about to kick off. (and also plenty off others who have had RMA after RMA for the same product)

Simucube are good, the VRS wheel base & pedals are amazing too. Fanatec's party piece really is that they work with playstations & xboxes if you get the right ones, if you're never going to use it on a console then they're not worth the hassle imho

    • +1

I’ve had both and the OG OSW(2014).
Can’t really tell much of difference once dialled in in the likes of AC, ACC and iRacing in terms of FFB.
Why I’m sticking with Fanatec and sold Simcube:
      1. Wider selection of wheels at more affordable price, and better wireless solution.
      2. Much easier to dial in settings.
      3. No sudden death of finger when crashed into wall, happened to me once and wound was the size of a penny.
      4. No adaptor needed on PS5.

      • sudden death of finger

        ?

Here thinking the interactive force feedback is a feature

        Sounds like pain

      • The wound was the size of my wife??

    • Seconded (about Fanatec). I've actually just bought a Simagic Alpha Mini. Relatively new to the market, from China, but getting killer reviews.

    • Simucube does have great reviews from what I read and how it feels refined. But the wheel for it costs so much! Is it able to use wheels and accessories from all other brands? The pro does look great but this deal comes with wheel and pedals!

    • Haha ended up watching hours of sim racing videos online. Seems like everyone only has good things to say about the Simucube system. Found out they have adapters to take wheels from other companies. And now many worrying things about Fanatec like the crap plastic part at the wheel hub that seems to break from high torque.

Hope I won't regret the Fanatec! And unfortunately no discount for the Simucube yet but they have discounts up for their rigs. If there's a discount would be tempted to return the Fanatec and just go for Simucube!

  • a bit egregious to still charge further for delivery

    Why?

    • +6

$2000 for a wheel and not to throw in free postage is a bit cheeky imo. Then again anyone buying a wheel like this probably isn't going to blink much at the postage charge. And from a company perspective why eat into your profits if you don't have to?

Can't say I agree with it but that's probably the thinking.

      • I get that OzBargain has a fcuk companies - they're all ripping us off! mentality, but I would prefer to pay a fair price for an item and have the transparency of shipping costs itemised separately. I have NO IDEA how much margin is in one of these units for Fanatec, but I doubt that they have a lazy (say) 50% gross margin on such a niche product with extensive R&D (et al) costs.

(Aside: Amazon has created an unsustainable belief that all shipping can be/should be free. Sigh.)

The last car I purchased had a non-negotiable dealer delivery charge. Both the car and the delivery charge were orders of magnitude larger than what's being sought here for product + delivery.

        • +1

dealer delivery is literally cream on top for the deal.

The dealer's invoice price includes delivery to them.

          • @meowsers: Kind of my roundabout point - GENUINE delivery costs, when presented, are rejected while bullsht or obfuscated costs are accepted.

  • +5

Can I install this in my car without getting defected?
    https://www.drive.com.au/news/police-defect-car-with-gaming-…

    • +3

the fanatec one i wouldn't, but a lot of other "high end" sim-racing wheels are legitimate momo race wheels and would work totally fine in a real car, they have the same screw arrangements and everything, lots of bits are interchangeable between real cars and sim racing.

that's half the problem with why a lot of wheels (and rig seats) are so expensive, because they're safety-certified for real cars!

      • How many people modding real steering wheels to the sim base?

Comes with realistic airbags for immersion

    • +1

So yeah. That actually happened. Wtf?

  • Sweet deal, would love to treat myself but don't even own a house yet so this would add to my collection of stuff I don't really need

  • +2

This is actually really bloody cheap! the v3 pedals included for 2299 is unreal!

**Coming from someone who has spent many multiples of this on sim racing gear

  • -2

    Probably avoid fanatec imo

  • -1

What can this do for me?

    • +3

Ask not what your Fanatec can do for you – ask what you can do for your Fanatec

  • How much better are these really than the, say Logitech, alternatives?

    • +2

Logitec just came out with a direct drive wheel. This has twice the power of it and you can swap out wheels and add a hand brake and 7 speed shifter, however the Logitech alternative is surprisingly good.

    • +2

the consumer stuff feels cheap & janky by comparison, like plastic toys. they do the job just fine just not in the same class. fanatec is next level over that for sure, and has solid console support but it certainly goes beyond that for other pc ecosystems… with a real deal setup, it's a thing unto itself ie. you'd want close to a full cockpit to go with, and that leads either into mounting single or multi monitors or giant tv space ie. dedicated space & time for this hobby. its not for sticking under the bed and occasionally pulling it out to plop on the table like the consumer stuff. difference will be in the eye of the beholder. mainly, how much money you have to throw around, and how many driving games you play & how seriously as well…

    • -1

Logitech is entry level but very common and easy to use.

They have a direct drive version out but for the price they're asking, I'd be looking at Fanatec or Simagic as a much better alternative.

      • Please do not recommend Simagic. Chinese knock off with flaws and unproven track record. The choice is Fanatec, Simucube, VRS or Logitech.

        • I would agree but I have 2 friends that have them and they've been flawless.

I'd choose them over logitech but the others you mentioned (vrs is a bit crap) are better.

  • +5

I have this kit and use it on my PS5 and it’s a winner. Love it. People like to rag on Fanatec but until simcube and the likes have console support, it’s hard to recommend against it.

    • I was looking for this comment, cheers. Going to replace my thrashed g29s with these. Do the club sport shifters and handbrakes work with these?

      • +1

Yep! I use mine for gt7 and dirt rally 2.

        • Thankyou! We play on PC too but GT7 is the main one my 12yo and I play atm. Getting the manual shifters and handbrakes too. Always wanted handbrakes for our sim setups

  • -4

    I bought a Hyundai I20 with 50,000km in manual for 3K in 2018.

    This is $700 less, bargain

  • So I'm considering deal but want to know why at the regular price the wheel and base is more expensive than the bundle that includes the pedals also? Does anyone know who this is?

      • So when its offsale the pedal set bundle will be 2549? so really its only a 250 dollar saving?

        • +2

Per the link the pedal and bundle set is normally $3349, so approx $1150 saving.

          • @caboose: yeah i see that, but then on fanatecs website it has 2549.85 regular price.

        • No, the wheel and base is $2800 normally. Are you sure you’re not looking at the US pricing?

          • +1

@nomoneynoproblems: no im looking at the aus site. Will from Boosted Media has explained: that $250 saving is o. Top of the already discounted wheel and base. So it’s more like $750 off what the price was previously.

  • +1

    Quite a good price

  • -2

    What recession? What inflation?

  • +3

great price for a high end product but my csw 2.5 has got tons of life left.

    • The CSW 2.5 is just a beast

  • +2

This is a great base at a great price.

I still have the CSW 2.5 with Heusinkveld pedals and a bunch of wheels (which is still better than the CSL Direct Drive IMHO) but at this price, it might be time to upgrade.

  • Is this coming from OS? Any additional GST?

    • +1

      No extra GST.

  • +1

I'm sure these are amazing fun, and I'd love a go - but I'm finding it hard to imagine a world where I could in all good conscience drop well over 2k on a Sim wheel.

    • +1

I don't smoke, rareeeeely drink, never touched a drug in my life.

This is my vice, stress relief and hobby. Well worth it over life of device. And doing it with good gear is just more enjoyable.

    • I tried it and unfortunately it is quite unforgettable! I guess cheaper than going for real drives these days. Car prices hurt more than this wheel.
