You might be using it wrong

  • +10

I'm no Apple fan myself but I have one of these albeit the older 4K model and it's been excellent!

    • +4

Same. I'm a Windows/ Android person (but I do have an iPad) and Apple TV is best streaming device I've ever owned).

      • +1

Can you 100.00% use this without having a single Apple device?

        • +6

You need an iTunes account and it works well with airpods. Otherwise it's just a streaming box and you can load it with your own apps. I like it because UI is much cleaner and quicker than the Samsung, and basically no ads, unlike Chromecast or Fire Stick.

          • +1

@SydStrand: Thanks, thought as much. Have an old iTunes account back from the turn of the century that I could use, might need a password prompt though! One limitation must be the inability to load apk and other sideloading pursuits.

            • +1

@Charlie Dont Surf: Yes you can 100% use it. That 0% you are missing out on is setting it up automatically with iPhone, which means it just syncs all your Apple ID details from the phone so you don't have to type anything in.

The only other thing I can think of which requires an iPhone is wireless audio sync. But you only need to do this if you have significant delay in your audio. And this can be done with any iPhone, like a friends you can borrow just to perform the calibration measurement. Then you never need to touch it again.

I dislike Apple and I am seriously tempted by this thing. For the hardware it's an absolute bargain compared to the competition.

Trying to convince myself not having AV1 decode is deal-breaker while I hold onto unfolded hope that Google would compete and shove Tensor into a TV box..

      • Is AV1 for Youtube? If so, I can do 4K60fps no problems at all on my 2017 ATV4K. 2022 model has a LOT more grunt.

        • Netflix uses AV1 as well. They fallback to HEVC(?) if your device doesn't support AV1. AV1 is more efficient, so my hope is the possibility of them streaming better quality with it. More likely they just save bandwidth costs though..

        Infuse (Pro) is your friend…

        https://firecore.com/infuse

        • +1

          Infuse is the best
          +1

          • @Soldier: Is it worth the $149.99 for the lifetime subscription?

Have you use Infuse with Jellyfin?
I am tempted to switch from Plex to Jellyfin, or maybe Emby. Plex is great but the Plex agents doesn’t handle Anime well.

            • +1

@cheach: I held out doing monthly trials for like months with different IDs then eventually paid the damn thing.. yes, $150 is worth it (unless.. (deep breath and hold) they tank or close business of course)

              • @youngchul76: Thanks! I will bite the bullet and cough up the $150.

                • +1

@cheach: I pay $14.49 per year. Yes in 10 years I’d have pretty much covered a lifetime subscription but it’s little enough for me to not notice.

To echo comments from here and elsewhere though, it’s awesome.

                • +1

@cheach: get nvidia shield and install kodi for free

                  heaps better than infuse

                  • @pinkybrain: I have both, definitely preferred the ATV with infuse, much better experience all round. I took the shield to work and the ATV stayed connected at home.

                  • @pinkybrain: Thanks.
I've got the original nvidia shield and the nvidia shield pro and loved them both until Google started showing ads. but the main reason I got the ATV is because plex client on the shield started to misbehaves.

  • Price Error. A bit confused. Does it mean they would honour it or is it just a matter of luck?

  • +2

Still only 12% discount. You can often buy the gift cards for 10% off during promotion so not a huge saving

    • +1

Sure, but you can grab this RIGHT NOW, from your desktop….

    • I just stacked this with the ultimate gift card I bought last week with the 20x bonus points.

  • +1

    it was $219 from amazon

    • WAS

      • so this isn't a price error

        • +1

          It’s more like a promotion.

        • It was on Amazon, they did the same thing, mixing up the 2 prices.

    • I ordered the 128GB variant from Amazon during their goof up. Slated to arrive by Friday. They are honoring the pricing.

  • +3
    • forgot why i ordered it when i dont need it?

  • this or the chrome?

    • +7

In my experience its a much better device for TV and Movie streaming than the Chromecast (I prefer if versus the much more powerful Nvidia Shield also). Is it $100+ better? For me I think it is and we use 2 in our house.

      Things I like:
      - simple fast interface, none of the google tv lag
      - HDR and frame rate switching works consistently and reliably
      - All the apps for Australia and they all work well
      - Apple rentals or purchases are generally better quality than the same thing through google (4k HDR for most things for the same money as google HD/SDR)
      - User switching works well
      - good remote

      • Hi Gregulah, I have a noob question if you don't mind. I have a samsung TV which doesn't have dolby atmos but my sonos sound system does support dolby atmos. If I stream content that has dolby atmos directly via apple tv will it work with my sonos system? TIA!

        • +1

Sounds similar to my setup. I plug the Apple TV into my receiver directly as the TV doesn't support Atmos. Atmos works well like that.

          • +1

@Gregulah: Great, thank you for your input!

    • -1

      This

    • Chrome is good. But is has ads which are pretty annoying. This is much more user friendly.

  • Definite price error

  • price error for sure . Same happened with amazon and they pulled it - not before many orders going through.

  • +1
    • Yep price error. Different models.

    • That's the 64GB/WiFi only version though, officeworks have swapped the price of the two versions

  • +3

Definite "error" if you look at the title and the model numbers.

  • +16

Price matched with JB, don’t forget to stack the $10 perk discount, bring it down to $208. Thanks op.

  • -3

50 quid and i am in

  • +2

When Apple goes on discount People think it's Price Error 😅

    • +3

It is a pricing error - look at product code

      Title: Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi + Ethernet 128GB
      Code: APTVG364GB
      Price: $218

      Title: Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi 64GB
      Code: APTVG3128G
      Price: $248.00

They clearly used switch the title. In saying that, I did order one for C&C, hopefully it gets honoured.

      • I hope that OW honour the sales and ships the 128GB model. It looks like they have mistakenly switch the product title. Because if they go by the product code then the price is correct.

      • GOOD POINT

      • +2

I think you are very likely correct, however if they try that I will argue the flip, that they must have had their internal codes wrong, as that is the detail that appears incorrect, pretty much all the other details on the page indicates 128GB, from the title, to the Apple code under "Model Number" (MN893X/A), to the fact it mentions Ethernet which is not on the 64GB, it also mentions wired connection again in another field, and you have to click the slider to select the 128GB model.

… that said, they also list the 64GB Apple code under the "Part Number" field (MN873X/A), the barcode they list is for the 64GB unit, and the weight spec is also the weight for the 64GB (but they use the same weight on both models which is incorrect, the 128 is heavier). Guess we will find out tomorrow.

        • +1

Probably wouldn't hurt to take a screenshot in case you need it later to argue your case.

          • +1

@cheach: Did that the moment I ordered :-)

I'll give it a crack, but for $30 I won't go all muskets at dawn, I'll just return it and they can lose all the shipping costs both ways. I elected for delivery on Friday so they can work out the error Tomorrowland hopefully ship the correct item.

  • Its coming as out of stock in Brisbane :(

    • Can’t order either

  • +1

100% price error, they have the 64gb model at the 249 price point and the 128gb model at the 218 price point where it should be reversed.

I've got an order confirmation on a click and collect, fingers crossed it gets honoured. This was on my black friday christmas shopping list for my parents so good to get one crossed off early.

Just bought a Level Bolt smart lock which can use HomeKit so this is a handy way to get it (and a decent streamer).

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Level-Invisible-Bluetooth-Smartpho…

    • Hope it’s better than this one
      https://youtu.be/m_MX96MVD00

      • What I got is the silver bit inside, not their knobs, which is what he got into in an amazingly easy and short time. The Beauty of the Bolt version is you can use your choice of knobs (from a range that fit it). There are some that are ANSI 1 (the top level). I hadn’t heard of the ANSI standard. I think it’s a US thing.

  • damn thats a good price. must be the same as last time? Thanks for sharing op!

  • If they go by the product code you're in for disappointment.

    • Is the stock in store accurate ?

  • +8

Just tried price matching with jb online, they refused due to officeworks not having stock on hand. Managed to negotiate with them to bring it down to 229. Pairing that with 10 off from perks and 10% gift cards brings it down to 197. Not terrible pricing

    • Do they do the price match after hour? I cannot find the chat window after 6 pm.

      • Yeah they do, I just called. The number is 135244

      • +3

Melb central closes at 7pm, and they r happy to do 218. Good luck

  • +8

might see a $70 bonus gift card on this model for Black Friday, similar to last year

  • Hahaha, they screwed up 😂

  • +1

Ethernet is great but I don’t understand how people use the storage? Is it just if you buy movies from iTunes?

    • +1

Buffering movies yes but not that much needed for streaming. More 4K screensavers, Games, Apps etc. you don’t really need the bigger storage, it’s just for the 2022 editions the 128GB model has more features.

    • +1

You can use the storage to download apps and games

      • Honestly the main streaming service Apps and most other Apps don't take up much storage. Download size for most is very little.
The only Apps that will take a lot of storage are those Cloud based ones and if you have it set to sync Original quality photos and videos.

So yeah the simple correct answer is = Games. Game downloads are much bigger and can be 1 to 2 GB per game.

And another large memory user is the moving screensavers. But you can set how often they download to update, and ATV manages it's auto storage memory system pretty well so I heard it will auto delete these large screensaver files in the background if it detects it is running low on memory.

This sports the same processor as an iPhone 14, so great for gaming with 128gb to store them

  • why thank you good sir(OP) :D <3

  • Ordered for pickup Friday. Will see what they try to give me.

    • How did you order ?

      • Online. Local store didn’t have it but will in 2 days…

        • My local Officeworks gave me the wrong (right?) item but were generous enough to see their error and have reordered the 128GB without additional cost to me.

  • Check the production code. Definitely price error. If you choose to post, possibly you will get the wrong version?

    • I hope not as I chose delivery.
      Guess we’ll find out…

  • Thanks OP!

Getting sick of the kids always being on YouTube as Google tv has the buttons and constant suggestions.

Would this fix that issue you think?

    • +2

Replacing the kids might be another solution too :)

      • If only!

  • Pulled the trigger, thanks OP 👍🏻

  • Waiting for Amazon to price match

    • You mean waiting for Amazon to Price error, which already happened.

I don't think they are likely to make the same mistake twice. The mistake being getting the models and prices the wrong way around.

  • Was able to price match yesterday at JB because it was showing delivery only for me. Rep didn’t notice the price error
