Back on sale is this previously popular small USB-C display that acts as an information display to show information about your computer such as CPU/GPU/memory usage, temperature, date/time, weather and more. You can mount it inside your PC or use the height adjustable stand.

Within the software are included customisable themes or you can create your own. Alternatively there's a project on Github that improves upon the software with more features. For those who do racing sims, Simhub Dash have recently added support. drakarn_123 says they've made an OzBargain RSS feed with their display too.

I prefer using an old smartphone and the remote system monitor app

    • Android only :(

Weather in the case is windy, gusts reaching 50 CFM. Despite higher positive pressure from the Arctics, new inbound NVIDIA makes for hotter than usual temperatures with high fire danger.

  • +5

What exactly is the use case of this device? Unless you're running anything which is CPU intensive, why would someone monitor their CPU/ RAM on a realtime basis?

    • +29

Just to showcase your pc to your wife, neighbour, neighbour's wife or post it on reddit

      • +10

        Probably their wife’s boyfriend

        • -3

That's definitely happening if you buy this.

why do some motorists want to know revs, engine temp etc. and have little display screens on their dashboard or on their car windows? - because both sets are GEEKS and want to know stats.

    • -1

They're like fluffy dice… they don't do anything and only one type of person buys them.

        Michael's neighbour's wife?

More functional than LED strips everywhere

Should monitor your temps if you build your own PC

Your CPU block/thermal paste/cooling isn't installed properly your CPU can run really hot without you knowing (reducing it's lifespan unecessarily).

If it runs too hot can cause throttling or crashes.

      Also if you overclock.

Also over time dust buildup can cause your PC to get hotter

Other things you'd want to monitor are like

pcie m.2 hard drives run really hot, default cooling options on cheaper motherboards are usually shit, AND they often sit above your GPU and the hot back plate from the GPU can make them even hotter.
It's like you store all your things on there and then it fails a few months later and you didnt know it was being slow cooked the whole time

Edit. Also these look good if you want to install it into your PC case. Cheap aesthetics

All of the things you said are solved by HW info better (because of history) compared to this display.

But in case you need to "sell" why you need it to your better half… all of those sound legit.

        • +3

Why would anyone need to consult with their partner on a $28 purchase. Is that normal.

          • -1

@KenDiaMoi: It just feels like you are trying to justify it… going to great lengths to make it sound like something useful.

            • +2

@misu p: I don't know why everyone has such a hate boner for this item.

I'm just explaining the use case.

Hw monitor is good, in some aspects it's better than this (the graphing ability). I used to use it too.

But it needs to be run on a second monitor to monitor temps live, and this doesn't have the nuanced issues of having a secondary monitor.

I have my PC custom overclocked (CPU, RAM and GPU). I need to monitor temps and loads to ensure my clocks are running ok, and to inform necessary adjustments. System performance can change drastically from game to game, app to app. So I use a similar tool to measure my Max, Min, Avg and Current temps, loads/utilisations and a few other things.
      It

    • Because.. look at the dials!

    • I have a Logitech G15 keyboard and still don't want to upgrade as the LED screen on it tells me CPU, RAM and GPU stats. It makes it easier to monitor them should they be overheating, using unnecessary resources or help with diagnosing.

  • unnecessary risk

        Thats what she said.

Can winning NNN grow it to 3.5 inch? (asking for a friend)

        • I heard from my friend that doing it does the opposite.

Ahem Just so you know its from my friend that I heard this, I would never do such a thing…

      • +1

3 inch but sildenafil on solid 6"

Can i use it to open my work documents while I play minecraft?

  • +2

I used to run this sort of thing on an old nexus 7 tablet but found that the monitoring software used up to much CPU.

    • I say it depends a lot on both hardware and software side of things. Im just using it with the software they provided not the github one and currently running at 0.3% background usage (This is on a mobile 12700H w/ 14C/20T) with 14.6 mb of ram taken up.

Fun useless toy, i got it for $12 - it almost worth it, almost

  • +4

Can it be used as HA dashboard?

    • I would love to know this as well

    • +4

An old phone or a cheap tablet will both be 100 times better than this.
      Pros for the phone:
      1) Bigger and better screen
      2) Wifi
      3) Touchscreen
      4) They can actually do stuff vs this that is just a screen

      Cons for the phone:
      none

I bought a new tablet… the old one went on the wall… I got 2 old phones where the battery life is not that good. I stuck 1 of them to the wall next to my bed… made a custom dashboard in HA …. boom…

  • Can it crack the enigma code?

  • I run a lot of AI text-to-image and this cheap lil monitor has been super useful to see system resource utilisation in real time while I fine tune my settings to max out performance.
it's great value for money BUT if you want to add anything else like HDD space left, etc, you'll need an AIDA64 compatible LCD instead which cost $120+ delivered

    A screen can show anything. This isn’t a screen, it’s a… dashboard!

    • +2

That's an invalid reason to neg a deal. If there's an issue with the description you report it.

    • you're a dashboard

  • -1

No CPU temp on Windows? Pass. Try https://www.goverlay.com/

    • It does show CPU temp

  • But wouldn't this use some percentage of your CPU resources to monitor and push the realtime feed to the display device?

    • +1

Yeah any software will do it. I recommend the GitHub link as it's lighter on resources.

All of the use cases, including the project linked to on GitHub, relate to PC temperature and performance monitoring.

Is it just a generic HDMI display over alt-mode, or is there some reason why those use cases seem to specific?

Can it be customised to display a Home Assistant dashboard? Could you plug into a Pi Zero using a generic USBC - mini HDMI adaptor?
