  • Every year deal, unfortunately not a new customer…

    • +2

Where does it say you have to be a new customer?

      • +2

Offer not available on all other card types (including Low Fee), existing cards, switches from other card types, and new Low Fee credit cards if you currently hold, or have held, any Low Fee or Low Rate card type in the 12 months prior.

Wondering if this is $1500 excluding GST (so $1650 inc GST) that needs to be spent as a minimum to get the cashback?

      • It's the transaction amount charged to your card, regardless inc gst or not.

  • +5

Credit cards shouldn't have fees, they make enough from the merchant fees.

None of my credit cards have fees… Shop around.

    • Your comment made me read the post all over again. Glad i did as I thought first year is free and subsequent years only free when you spend $10,000. Not going to wait months to spend $10k in the first year to get $0 annual fee for $300 cashback.

      • +5

You can read that a couple of ways - I took it as free for the first year, then free in subsequent years with a 10k spend.

Can anyone confirm which it is?

        • Agreed! Quite confusing. Also interested in knowing if they do prorata annual fees if i close within 4 months.

          • +10

@elecpurch: The T&C say "when you spend 10,000 in the previous year. There is no previous year when you sign up so no way to meet that.

[EDIT] Found this in the table further down:

"No annual fee in the first year. We’ll waive an annual fee in subsequent years if you spend $10,000 or more a year on purchases or cash advances in the previous year. "

            • +1

@gadgetguy: "The annual fee is waived in the first year. The annual fee will be waived every year after that if you spend at least $10,000 in the previous year on your card (on purchases and cash advances only)"

      • +3

Low Fee Gold one only requires $1k spend p.a. to waive the annual fee. Signup bonus is $200, but it is easier to hold onto it.

  • +6

Would taking this card and clocking 1.5K in 3 months and then closing it off affect one's credit rating?

Like say you wanna buy a house or something 4-6 months down the line.

    • very good question….

    • +10

Close it to increase borrowing capacity (if necessary) when apply homeloan. No effect at all.

    • +6

Not in any substantial way, look at all the ozbargainers and people on other forums churning through credit cards for frequent flyer points and other deals. Mine initially went down slightly when I first started years ago but have steadily risen despite the continuous new card applications. In terms of home loans it doesn't seem like Aus banks even care about the actual score like they do in the USA, more about having open card accounts decreasing your borrowing capacity and not having have late payments and bills.

    • +2

      House no. Personal loan yes.

    • +6

ive gone through like 7 cards this year, my score is still excellent

    • +1

It will show up in the credit report along with the status. Closed status = $0 liability

  • +2

There's a current drought at the moment for really good sign up bonuses and promos for credit cards. Been patiently waiting for a decent sign offer (excluding the recentish deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/728989 - hate dealing with ANZ and don't really fly virgin)… Might just take up this offer as have been waiting over a month now since closing my Amex Qantas card which had a decent sign on bonus at that time. Heard better CC offers are on the horizon but have been paying out of pocket for a lot of items lately which normally would have been put on the CC to acquire points or meet min spend requirements for promos.

    • +2

Yeah bit of a drought at the moment in terms of fee-free QFF stuff at least, but this and the ANZ cashback ones are ok in the interim. Bit of a dearth of reward flights to europe for up to a year or more currently too and no idea if that will recover anytime soon.

    • +2

Yep looks like it, currently waiting to collect my Citibank Prestige rewards then this might be the fourth and final card for 2022, been a good year for deals though glad Covid is gone!

  • I had this a few years ago and closed the account. Am I eligible?

    • Says in the description above has to be over 12 months ago so you should be fine. Which is typical for all of these cards except for amex with their 18months one.

    • I had this a few years ago and closed the account. Am I eligible?

    Minimum credit limit of $4,000

Meaning, I cannot buy $6,000 airline tickets?

    • You can have a higher credit limit if you wish. Just change the min when you apply

Good deal, pretty much a free $300 given black friday sales later this month

      • Sounds good, I have never had a cc in the last 12 years so kind of new to this points game. I have been earning some cashback stuff though.

So I can close the card without any questions asked or fees to be paid maybe in 8 to 9 months?

        • Yes you can close it whenever you want and you can do it within the Commonwealth Bank app itself so you won't need to go to the branch and potentially getting ask any questions.

    • +2

Don’t increase the limit if you don’t need to. I always buy airline tickets with min credit limit cards by topping it up with required amount.

      • I am just after the 300$ cashback, this is something new, so you can add money to your credit card.

Someone said, free travel insurance, I think it's double benefits if I buy tickets using a cc.

        • The trigger point on when you get insurance depends on carm. Sometimes you have to spend only $500

    • +1

If you transfer $2000 to the account when there is $0 owing your credit limit is artificially $6k now.

  • +4

This is truly underated, and a gem of a card
I just stumbled across it recently.

Essentially, they are paying you $300 to give you free international travel insurance. The best part…you don't even have to pay for the associated travel costs with the cc.

This is hands down a no-brainer. Don't even need a half decent income.

    • +1

What’s the minimum income for this card like?

    • is the travel insurance that comes with this card comprehensive enough? would it be like for like for travel insurance in the market i.e Travel Insurance Direct?

  • damnit, I got the $200 one months ago and just closed it!

    • Did you have to pay the annual fees for the first year if you did not spend $10k?

      • +1

it was the $0 fee one. spend $1000 get $200 back

        • Same here, oh well. Was thinking of keeping the card open for Commbank benefits, but probably better to close off, so I can get these deals 12 months later lol.

          • @kehuehue: if you want the commbank benefits, open a debit card with them, I believe you still get deals through that

            • +1

@freestyle18: i think they got a monthly fee? want to avoid those accounts

              • +1

@kehuehue: think you need to satisfy the conditions of deposit to waive the fee. so a transfer dance but should be okay otherwise

  • +5

This card offers free travel insurance for you and your partner. Saved me over 800$ during all COVID price gouging.

  • Any comments or past experience with Citi Premier credit card? It comes with $600 cashback over ApplePay eligible purchases.
    https://www1.citibank.com.au/credit-cards/citi-premier-cashb…

    • +2

Looks like that one potentially has a $150 fee the first year whereas this one doesnt? Still better value if you plan on spending 2k+ within the next 90 days

      • $150 in the first year and each subsequent year if you spend $48,000 on eligible purchases or cash advances in the previous year. Otherwise $300.3

    • Yup I got that deal, it was a good return on investment. Thinking about cancelling it soon.

  • Tried earlier this year, application got lost never picked up by staff. Hope they manage their information security better than their application process. Cbb

    Are giftcards considered 'purchases'?

    • Yes

    Snap! Yet another trap!

  • +1

Citi prestige card has been the best deal and so glad to have jumped in on it. No yearly fee and the lounges + points have been great

  • Need advice as the T&C's are a bit confusing. I currently hold a CommBank LowFee card. So I guess I'm not eligible? Am I?

  • +3

Went through all the bloody hassle of filling in details and for some reason the application just failed without saying why. My guess is Optus lol.

    • I'm naturally with commbank, i guess my application was easy. Didn't even need to submit payslips. Badluck bro

      • Haha or so you thought. I'm with commbank and was applying while logged in

        • Yeah it'd prob vary, my relatives literally have recent home loans with them and still had to upload payslips and income proof again.

  • instead of giving my payslip can I just give my NOA?

    • +1

You should call them and ask. No one here will know for sure.

    • They'll take any excuse to ignore your application and loose it

  • Any one know if you can get an instant digital card if you successfully apply?

    • +2

You do not, I had to wait for mine in the mail

    • Apart from westpac do any others offer a digital card while the physical one is in the mail?

  • I am not sure i understand : A maximum charge of $300 (or a flat fee of $3.00 applies if your closing balance on previous business day was in credit). Can someone help pls .?

    • +1

Credit card should always be negative balance. Please do not save money into it to make it a positive balance otherwise you will get fined. That applies to almost all credit cards

      • Thank you for explanation. I didn't know that

  • In a sign that perhaps I churn a bit too much, I thought I hadn't held this card for a year, but I checked. Closed in September 2022. Bugger.

  • Would I be ok if I still hold the Black Coloured Credit Card from CBA? (dont know what it is actually called but its the top tier cc by cba)

  • +1

I got rejected by ANZ for the PointsHack deal but immediately conditionally approved for this CommBank deal. Glad I dodged a bullet with ANZ's poor processes.

  • You won’t earn Awards points

Can someone please clarify this point mentioned in the terms and conditions?

Will I not earn any frequent flyer points and airport lounge access with this card?

    • No. This is not a reward card.

  • -1

No credit card, its a catch

  • Cash in and change to Gold before renewal to have travel insurance!

  • +2

Be warn that CommBank process is quite slow. Took them over a week to send me a link to upload payslips - could be due to I don't bank with them. Then a week to get approval. Then another week to get the physical card in hand.

    • Haha they let you know it’s not easy to get their card so you will think twice before cancelling

    • +1

uhhh i didnt even have to give payslips, i just applied and they said its on its way 3 days later

They should already know my incoming income anyway

      • I was asked to upload payslips too. It has been one day already and it shows they are validating my documents.

        • not sure why they never asked me. Pretty sure I filled everything correctly too. It is my first ever commbank credit card tho maybe thats why

    • +1

potentially more stringent processes as they don't have any of your records or information… i applied as an existing customer on tuesday, pre-approved on the spot and card sent 3 days later (today)…

      • Yes, my application took nearly one month to finalise. I have the Login ID for over 10 years, but not bank with it for over 7 years.

The bank may consider a customer having credit card service only as a potential risk.

  • -1

Are rent payments, utility bill payments via bpay via credit card considered purchases and add up for 1500$ spend limit to get 300$ cash back?

    • Purchase made via credit cards should be considered as purchases. Lol

    • -1

You'll probably get hit with cash advance fees if you do that though so it's not worth it.

      • Huh? Cash advance fee for doing Bpay? Never been charge once in my life with using CC from various banks in last 20 odd years.

  • Bit of a no-brainer I'm looking at getting a new GPU next month anyway.

  • +1

I don't know why, every time I make an application for a Credit Card at Commonwealth, it instantly denies me. I have good income, good credit history. The system just doesn't like me.

    Your application was not successful.

We've carefully reviewed what you've told us but are unable to offer you a credit card.
Let us know when your circumstances change… your next application may be more successful.

    • I am in the same boat but after i read some reviews on product review…it's very common for them.
Steer clear of Commonwealth bank !

    • Same, makes no sense.

  • +1

thanks OP… card received and all activated… good timing too as all the annual bills are coming in around this time… now just need to wait for that sweet cashback…

  • +1

My credit score just went down 8 points after applying. This is from creditsavvy, who are owned by commbank. My score had been the same for years before.

    • +1

It'll go up next month. 8 pts on a 0-1000 scale is negligible.

      • Can confirm, mine did the same.

  • +1

Comm Bank has to be the most outdated bank I have come across. I was in the middle of an application for this Credit Card and something weird happens where I get an error message " Sorry…." which to me looks like the process got interrupted before completion. Now it won't allow me to do another application or resume that particular application. It's asking me to login to NetBank which requires a client number and a password. I've got the password as it was set by me but I don't have the client number. Gave their call center a call and after waiting for 40 mins, I was told to go to my nearest branch to get verified before the client number is provided. Such requirements in 2022? Glad I don't bank with this bunch.

    • +1

My application just got refused. Haha they said it will leave a “Declined Credit Card” record in my credit profile.

They must predict the risk of fixed rate home loan expiry. So even your spending looks healthy currently, they would still decline, because they need to assess your future liabilities.

    • Basically had the same experience as you. Hell no am I going to bother going into the branch because their online process is backwards. Waste of time.
