Which is best to run unRAID?

    • +2

      Neither

    • Why would you?

  • Great price for Synology DiskStation DS920+
Synology DiskStation DS923+ has just been released though so it depends what specs you are looking for but it does cost a lot more.

    • +1

IMO, DS923+ is a downgrade from the DS920+ with the move to the Ryzen Embedded platform.

TS-464 is really cool though! If I was in the market for an upgrade to my DS918+ that would be my go to right now I think

      • I am new to these and looking to start my Plex server. Are you saying TS-464 is better than DS923+? Also reading from the review below, is DS923+ isn’t good as a Plex server due to the video and audio transcoding limitations?

        • +1

Yes, the DS923+ is focusing small business it seems with the processor choice. It also seems to have more power usage due to the processor as well.

TS-464 will be good enough for plex transcoding. What clients will be playing your videos? If it’s modern TVs/Nvidia shield pro then you won’t even need any transcoding. Plex should direct play them. Only limit will be network bandwidth, so if the NAS is outside your LAN it will probably need transcoding to a lower quality.

          • @danceswithdeals: Thanks for the info. I will be using Apple TV to watch it. Server will be sitting under my standing desk connected to the ethernet.

    • Agreed, the 920+ has historically been around the $720 mark after discounts.

  • What's the appeal of these devices? They seem so expensive to me. FYI I have an old HP MicroServer as my NAS.

    • +1

Ease of use, low power usage.

    • +2

set and forget really, plus as they get newer they perform better. So less power costs (usually), less noise, etc.

  • Sigh, I don’t have zip pay and I don’t intend to make one due to them seemingly performing a credit check on you. Not that I have bad credit anyway. Guess ill wait for black friday

    • Ditto. Completely missed the ZIP bit until I tried to pay lol

    • Paid with all ebay GC and thus dont need to use zip pay at all

      • And you still get the $696 price?

        • +1

yup, the xzip15 code is like a discount voucher. I paid the rest of the remaining balance with ebay GC until it was $0 and just checked out to complete the order. Done.

          • @wshinji: So to be clear.
Once you've entered in sufficient gift cards to cover the cost, the Pay with Zip option is replaced with a Checkout option?
No mention of needing to even login with a zip account?

            • @Brausmith: Correct, no need to use zip pay at all, just complete order once enough ebay GC are used to make the final balance $0. When I purchased it yesterday, hope they havent changed it.

  • Hunting for a Synology at the moment, what people's recommendations for pure back up and postentially accessing a music (FLAC) library remotely. No intention for plex

    • All of them are capable of that workload, just choose according to the number of drive slots you need (factoring in redundancy). Also, these devices aren't infallible, and the filesystem they use (Btrfs‍) doesn't have the best reputation. If anything on the NAS is important to you, it's best to put another copy on another NAS or Google Drive / iCloud. I've been burnt before, not worth being lazy when it comes to backups.

      • Thanks for the insight, geez that cost woudl go up, setting up a Synology AND paying for TB's O storage on google drive

        • NAS + external USB drive won't cost the Earth :)

FWIW there's nothing wrong with BTRFS, if the data's important or difficult to replace, backups should be your priority anyway. If funds are limited, grab a USB drive and start backing up now and you can grab a NAS at a later date, then start backing up to that directly and then backup your NAS to that external USB drive.

        • NAS is really beneficial for workflows, people usually have them + off site backups. Like for example if you are a designer or photographer or content creator you need access to your large files locally for fast access. But you also need them to be backed up on top of that. Which will only be used in the event of missing data that needs to be restored.

        • I suggested cloud provider backups as it's very safe and easy but if the subscription model isnt appealing @bdl is right, an adequately large external HDD is sufficient to store backups of your most important data. When not in use it's best to store it in a different residence like your parents or a friends house to avoid events like theft or fire taking out both the NAS and backups at the same time.

  • Good timing as my DS415 just died so picked up the DS920+.

From the video reviews i have seen the DS923+ is a step backward for plex transcoding. Has to do with how it treats clients that cannot handle certain video codecs. The DS920+ has no issues so I went with that one as im using mine 80% as a plex server for 4k + 1080p clients.

  • Is there a command line interface you can get to? Is it Linux?

Was wondering how managing Docker containers on this would be compared to on a plain Linux server.

    • +1

Yes, linux, you can ssh to the box

You can manage docker containers via the limited inbuilt gui, or just use the shell for docker compose, etc - if you're more comfortable with that. Can also installer portainer if you prefer managing them that way

      • Thanks for that!
