    Delivery November 29 - February 2. Ouch.

    • +1

in hi-fi matched this the other day for me

  • HD ,,,,,says 1080 p which FHD ?

    • "HD" is just part Google's product naming… there's two versions currently:

      • Chromecast with Google TV (HD)
      • Chromecast with Google TV (4K)

But yes, the "HD" version is 1080p HDR, which may or may not be "FHD" depending on who's using that marketing term on the given day.

      Cheers.

    • +19

I have both. The firmware and app store on the Firestick is absolute rubbish. Regretful purchase.

      • +5

Really? I liked the firestick 4K max so much I bought 2 more. Don't know if I'd pay $100 ea for them but at 2 X 4K maxes for $60 they're brilliant.

        • +5

yeah they are fine for streaming, no idea why this bloke regrets his life so much

          • +5

@Budju: Lack of apps (even some big streaming services like Binge) and poor casting capabilities. Google TV/Chromecast just works, has the google app store, and can easily be sideloaded with unofficial apps.

            • +1

@mett139: I managed to side load binge and it works well. It is annoying that it's not on the app store though

Pretty easy to do you just have to get the android TV apk and load it up using this apk side loading app from the amazon app store

              • @Budju: That's actually good to know. I didn't realise it was running a version of Android. I swear I checked 12 months ago and came up dry. Now just to figure out how to get casting to work on it.

                • @mett139: Look up a guide on youtube, you have to put the stick in developer mode. Also i mistakenly got the android binge app first which didnt work. Has to be android tv app and latest version of it.

Apparently this process has to be done each up the android tv binge app gets an update or it stops working

            • +1

@mett139: I don't use binge and I like the quality of firetv 4k max. I have both chromecast with google tv 4k and fire tv 4k max. The only advantage on chromecast and I like it is that many apps support chromecast. Fire tv can sidload other apps if needed. But some apps only available on fire tv will fail to work on chromecast though sideloaded on chromecast.

        • +1

Yes prefer my 4K max more than the chromecast with GTV. In fact about to sell mine as I also just moved to Apple TV.

      • -1

Firmware can be fixed with future updates

        • +2

Updates from who, a third party? Amazon won't improve the service/product.

        • Can do, won't do?

    • At similar price, yes. As of now, there seems to be a decent price difference.

  • Would this be preloaded with BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4 and Channel 5?

Is it easy to load the Australian free-to-air streaming services on to it?

    • +1

yes through google play store or side load kodi etc

      • How long would that take? I wonder…is that time spent waiting for delivery from the UK and loading the Australian apps worth $20?

        • +3

          5 mintues maybe

        • +7

You'll still have to do all the same things to get the UK apps up and running as if you bought an Australian version. The only difference between the two devices this one will come with an Australian power plug the other a UK power plug. Not worth the wait or potential warranty issues.

I'd hang off until Friday and you'll probably find a similar deal locally.

  • +1

Is there a difference between the UK version and the local one? I can't see anything obvious when searching…

The USB power adapter will have a UK plug.

    • +6

which is a usb a to usb c charger cable & a usb a charger socket which can be replaced with any aussie usb charger

    • +23

      lol worst advice ever

    • +8

It'll take up way more room and use more power, and if you're running Windows or Linux on it it's also going to need regular maintenance (OS updates and security patches). You'll need to clean the heatsinks once in a while and contend with fan noise if the bearings are worn out.

A Chromecast is always-on and ready to go and requires no maintenance, it's basically set and forget.

Look the amount of down votes is excessive especially if you plan on using a VPN/torrents/usenet on your old PC. I use an old PC for speakers and movies at my house in two rooms but have bought these for my grandparents and guest room. I've used and bought both and definitely won't be swapping to this for my personal room use.

      • +2

different use cases. my family can connect to my plex/jellyfin server (full of torrented films) and use that with a chromecast. they aint using a HTPC. I have a NAS set up to this exact device (older 1080p tv) and it works great for the family home.

  • -7

HD?! can you even make out faces and colours in HD?..

    • No?

    • +3

Gets abit hard when you're watching Japanese adult content

      • +1

        'hard'

        ehehehe

      • Yeah HD is so bad when watching it.

It’s so pixelated that it’s beyond a joke.

Hoping the Chromecast Google TV 4K will make it crystal clear.

        • The pixels all seem to be around the same spot though… Maybe I have a faulty device

          • @D3m3ntia: It’s odd the pixelated area moves with scene.

I must test with new content

  • +10

Got price matched with Goodguys. Cheers!

    • +3

Great idea plus I had 20$ store credit from the motog stuffup

    • Just called the GoodGuys and they wont price match with Amazon, "only physical stores". How did you convince them?

      • +1

Ive had good guys price match ebay with code deal instore.

  • These are perfect for those with IPTV.. just got 3

    • Recommend any reliable IPTV services other than Foxtel Now?

      • yes pm me

        • I am also keen to know I can’t seem to pm you.

  • Wondering a couple of things…
With a VPN, one could watch Pommy TV content?
And, since this looks like running until next weekend, is a CR offer with more than 7% back on Amazon purchases likely?

    • If the site that offers the shows doesn't block VPN IP addresses then yes.

      • Just got back from Japan. ABC iview would always detect I was overseas if I used my Keep Solid Wireguard VPN either on the streaming device or on my travel router with the Android app or via browser. Luckily I've got a Wireguard Server setup at home which worked fine so obviously some sort of IP ban going on.

    • +4

Not sure of answer for second part of your Q, but towards watching pommie shows.
      1) this device lets you download most streaming apps (eg: Britbox, google, Disney, Netflix, prime, etc, etc) that are available in your country. Even gets you other good free stream apps, such as Tubi, and Plex (some reason I couldn’t get Pluto to run on mine p, so I just stream this to it).
      2) British TV streaming services that would not ordinarily let you watch outside of the UK don’t tend to work on this, even with a VPN (found this the same on my PC… the Brit’s seem to have a way of telling if you’re using a VPN, and tell you ‘naughty, naughty’ and block you from watching.
      3) I’m a big fan of UK shows, over US ones, and with both VPN (I can download the NORD app) and no VPN use I have watched a decent amount of Brit series through this device.
-latest UK series watches: PREY, The Devils hour… which are both fantastic series..

Oh.. and because this device shows the series/movies rating via RottenTomatoes (better than that IMBD bs ) then easy to find a decent movie/series to watch within minutes.
I found the effort to find a decent one through just Netflix (for example) very tedious. And even then, watch at least 5 minutes of a show, only to find out it stinks, and then…. Back to looking for another show..grr…

So for me this device is a game changer.

      • Thanks for the input but I got a bit lost between 2) and 3). If you can't get UK streaming through a VPN, on what streaming service are you watching the British shows? Ta in advance

    • No more or less than a locally purchased device. Don't forget that this is an Android based item and unless you're registered with Google Play in the UK, Google will only allow you access to the streaming apps associated with where you are. It's a content rights thing.

Most people sideload apps intended for other countries via a third party app store.

These are good to take on holidays!!!

Me and the missus travelled around Europe recently, having the Google TV was a godsend. No hotels had Chromecast and this worked at most hotels. Some it didn’t work as I couldn’t get through the wifi login page.

    • -6

Going on holiday to Europe to watch chrome cast…

      Did hotspoting work though?

      • +2

Well if you want to watch TV in English rather than German, French or Italian then the Google TV is a good idea.

No I didn’t go to Europe to watch TV… I usually wind down in the bedroom with the TV on.

    • Ah that's a great idea!

    • +2

Take a travel wireless router with to solve the "wifi login page issue". Eg. The mango.

      • Does this get around the hotel login page gateway?

        • Yes

          • @Lukian: can you elaborate how?

            • +1

@pbong1OzBargain: It creates its own wifi network which piggy backs of the hotel. And then you connect a device and it passes through the hotel authentication which you completed on your device. This is also good for the hotels with only 1 or 2 device limits.

    • Totally agree. And if anyone has found the Firestick I left behind at a hotel in Bali… you are welcome

    • +1

We just got back from Thailand and had a similar problem at one hotel. Got around it by hotspotting from my phone while connected to hotel WiFi. Then my wife would set up the Chromecast on the hotspot network instead.

      • Ok so if I'm reading this right:

        1. connect to hotel wifi using your mobile phone and log in to their webpage
        2. then press the hotspot button on your phone (turn your own sim data off)
        3. connect the chromecast to your phone network and netflix should work normally

Is that it or am I missing something?

Waiting for the 4K to drop in price

    • I’m so lucky I don’t feel the need for 4K.
Must be that I watch more series than movies I guess.

      • +1

Many series are available in 4K

      • +2

It would depend really on if you have a 4k tv or an old fullhd tv. But 4k has been around for almost a decade now.

  • Cheers. Our old VodafoneTV is slowly dieing. Been looking to pickup another CCWGT for awhile. Great price.

  • +2

I have a couple of Firesticks and SmartTVs but can't install LazyIPTV so this device is very attractive.

In the app, I drop the playlists I want from this list for a world of choice… 1080p will be fine for the app.

the android TV version of this is better

    • Er! But it is Android TV, just a different launcher.

  • This or Nvidia or Apple

    • This is much better value and gets the job done almost as good as my Apple TV at a fraction of the cost (I have the 4k version though). The UI is better too IMO.

    • I got a Nvidia it’s a beast for all my needs streaming Kodi and old school games

    • You can use Apple TV+ on Google TV.

  • U$D18 at Amazon.com

Don't know if free with prime as I don't have prime…

    .

    • Not anymore

  • We are supposed to be getting better with technology not worse.

  • This plus Tivimate plus a good iptv sub *chefkiss

  • +1

Is the remote the same as the one which comes with the 4K version?

    • +2

      Yes.

  • Thanks OP I hoped to find one at $39.95 or better as a spare.

  • +1

I think its better to wait for couple of days to see what offers Australian retailers would give for this device as part of Black friday deals.

    • Can always cancel.

  • Had no idea these existed.. I thought there was only the 4k version.

    • Yeah its a bit stupid to release this in 2022 but Google had to react to counter Amazon as they've been selling a low end HD fire stick for ages.

      • It does seem silly, but at the same time, I'm looking to get one for my partner's 1080p tv, so no need for a 4k one, may as well save some $

        • As a company they should make a stand with their product and stand with it. Its silly as Apple discontinued their own 1080p tv box straight after Google announced this new one. Really feels like Apple just left them in the dust to fight over the scraps within the ultra low end of the market. In the next year or 2, Apple's probably going to start supporting 8k tv resolutions within its box whilst Google is still banging on about 1080p.

  • +1

Great price. I already have 2 4K ones driving 2 1080p displays, would have bought this instead if it was released sooner.

Can anyone who has used this model comment on stuff like menu navigation? Like is it noticeably slower compared to the more powerful/expensive models?

  • HD now $49 now at Google store. $79 for 4K.

  • Has anybody tried price matching with JBHIFI and if so does it work?

  • are the cpu and ram the same? 4k vs hd

    • would also like to know if the 4K has more cylinders under the hood
