Is it any good? Tempted to pull the trigger

Better off getting a modem that supports wifi 6e, especially if you're interested in any high bandwidth wifi devices like vr.

    • i bought one in july deal …..works fine with my HFC modem

      • Does this work with NBN directly? I have a modem provided by Belong but I want to switch nbn provider now. Not sure if I buy this do I need to buy a separate modem. Thank you

        • My AX3000 is plugged directly into my NBN modem (ARRIS Touchstone® CM8200 Cable Modem).

Depends on the type of NBN you have though.

  • Damn only just bought the ax72 for $215 yesterday

    • +1

I bought it from Shopping express for $176.65 delivered with 22% ebay plus offer + 10% shopback offer 2 days ago. AU stock.

      • +1

Lol nice way to rub it in.

    • you can get an amazon credit back if you bought through amazon.

      • Can confirm.
If the price drops suddenly, not sure how "sudden" they go by, they'll credit the difference towards your next purchase.

        • how do you do this? through their online customer chat?

          • @Adz12: Yep, I did it the following day though.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: They've denied this to me several times, citing a bunch of their terms and conditions and the fact they dropped the price protection benefits etc.

              • @Oofy Doofy: Was this less than 24 hours since the transaction? I haven't tried this any later so I couldn't tell you if they have a rule. Perhaps it's the operator you get? No idea 🤷‍♂️

                • @[Deactivated]: Within a day or 3. Sometimes a sale occurs the next day… same explanation every single time from Amazon Support.

                  • @Oofy Doofy: That sucks man.
                    Assuming you've tried several operators?

    • does it work directly with NBN without any modem?

  • Thanks OP! Grabbed the AX55 as the review below said it was a better performer and cheaper than the AX73. The AX72 is just the dual core CPU whereas the AX73 has three cores, otherwise no difference.

Edit, in my haste at 3am, I didn't realise I bought the AX55, not the AX50 mentioned in the review. No biggie as it seems like the AX55 replaced the AX50 and it's really just for regular duties to get off Telstra and switch to a cheaper provider!

    • I reckon AX73 is not in production anymore as had few components issues so it was replaced with AX72.

      • +1

        I thought AX73 has 3 cores while AX72 only has 2 cores?

        • Yeah but finding stock of it is scarce, it wouldn't make sense for them to produce both given their near identical specs

        • +2

TP-Link Archer AX72 is a great product with really good performance and strong signal strength. It turns out that it is exactly 10% slower than the Archer AX73 while being 10% cheaper. For most people, I reckon the Archer AX72 is more than enough especially for those with 500Mbps Internet subscription.

      • There's an AX73 v2 I believe, but I don't think there's stock of it anywhere.. https://www.tp-link.com/au/home-networking/wifi-router/arche…

    • U know u can just use the telstra modem

    • +1

You can use the Telstra Smart Hub with other NBN providers.

  • Is this good for gaming or streaming? If I wanted to create a mesh network am I limited to buying TP-link extender? or can I buy another branded router like ASUS as a node? Does my computer need a wifi 6 adaptor to ensure it has similar speeds?

    • +1
      • good for gaming or streaming? It is overkill if you only use it for yourself.
      • mesh network, depend on how you set it up, you can use any brand of extender. I use mixed brands of TP-Link, Asus, Tenda and D-Link, but I use Lan cable to support my network.
      • wifi 6 adapter, no need, the wifi still has 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, so you still can access wifi even if it not support wifi 6
    • +1

No you can't use the Asus node in a mesh network with TP-Link OneMesh products.

OneMesh only works between a OneMesh router and OneMesh Wi-Fi Extenders/Powerlines.

      TP-Link OneMesh Product List

      • +1

ohhh i see. so I am limited to TP-link products and I can't use another TP-link router as a node. thank you for clarifying.

        • If you want best performance, you need to pair it particularly with TP Link One Mesh line mesh nodes (ie NOT with TP Link Deco mesh nodes)

If you use an extender or another brand router you'll be compromising one thing or another even though you can get it to work.

    • If your want best performance then yes, you'll need a WiFi 6 adaptor, 5 and 2.4Ghz adaptors will still work though.

Run a speed test on your current WiFi adaptor, if you're at or near your internet speed limit then there's not much to be gained by upgrading to WiFi 6.

  • how about the coverage, will it better than TP-LINK VR600?

  • Happy owner of a ax73 (which is almost identical to the ax72) Had it in a household of 5 adult power-users with a gigabit fttp connection.

  • Yeah I've got the AX73 as well, 4 adult power users and doesn't skip a beat.
Wi-Fi 6 on it is really good as well, I can be two rooms over (drywall) and get between 800-900Mbps on the LAN.

Feel free to ask me any Q's

  • There's the d-link DIR-X5460 IIRC by way of Amazon UK for about $170 delivered. An alternative to this Tp-link unit.

I still wouldn't buy a router that doesn't have Openwrt support. Your average person probably doesn't give a hoot though.

  • Hi all, I'm an IT newb. I bought the AX55. Dumb question, it's a router. Is that all I need to sign up to a new carrier or am I going to need something with a modem built in? My address is FTTP and I'm considering TPG and it's not listed on their recommended list. God I feel dumb right now.

Edit: I haven't considered which ISP to switch to, TPG was just one that came to mind that's cheaper than Telstra that I'm on. What ISPs do you guys use? I won't need any more than 100/20. Any deals on at the moment worth noting?

  • Is AX55 an overkill to be used as an access point?
